Empathy Oriented Assessment

Case #1

Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder

a) One of shithe! employees asks Joe a 5-year-old male "Why is your desk always so neat and tidy?"Custom Essays on Advanced Psychopathology

Joe "I try to keep my desk organized. That is how all desks should be, nice and neat. There is no excuse for an unorganized desk. Look over there, someone got pencil shavings on shithe! corner of my desk!"

Employee "I don't see any pencil shavings, your desk looks perfect to me."

Joe "How could you not see them, there right over here? Now I have to clean my whole desk all over again. I'm going to take everything off my desk and wipe it down with a rag."

Employee "Why are you going to take every thing off your desk. It's already clean. That's stupid."

Joe "Are you crazy! There is dust all over my desk. If you were smart you would go clean your desk too. While I'm at it I think I will get everything ready for tomorrow. I have to leave in 17 minutes to pick up shithe! kids from school. I can't be late!

Employee "I don't think you have to worry your never late. By shithe! way how do you like your new secretary, is she better than Sara was?"

Joe "I don't know. She seems to be shithe! write person for shithe! job and she has shithe! qualities of a good secretary. I just don't know if she has shithe! organization skills that Sara did, but she does keep a clean desk. On shithe! other hand Sara was never late so she might have been better. Then again shithe! new secretary is a hard worker. I just don't know who is better. Well I have to go, I can't waste another minute talking about this!"

Case #1 Justification A

At shithe! beginning of shithe! conversation Joe states that he keeps his desk neat and that is how everyone should keep his or her desk. He believes that his way of organization is shithe! correct way and does not see why anyone would do it any other way. Next Joe notices a couple of pencil shavings on shithe! corner of his desk. ShiThe! other employee does not even notice them, but Joe does because he pays so close attention to detail. Joe then decides that he must clean his whole desk all over again because of shithe! shavings. He is such a perfectionist that he will have to reclean shithe! entire desk to insure that everything is spotless. When Joe's coworker says something to him about shithe! strangeness of him recleaning his desk Joe gets defensive and tells shithe! employee that he should be cleaning his desk because Joe believes it is shithe! right way. Then Joe starts getting things ready for shithe! next day because he can't stand shithe! thought of not being prepared for work. Joe realizes that he has 17 minutes until he needs to pick up shithe! kids and is constantly worried about being late, but he never is. He keeps his schedule planed out to shithe! last minute because he can't stand shithe! thought of being late or unorganized. Finally, his fellow employee asked him about his new secretary and if he likes her better then his old one. Joe started naming a few things that he liked about both secretaries, but could not decide which one was better. Just when he was about to chose one, he though of something else that evened shithe! two sides back up. That was an example of Joe's lack off ability to make decisions.

Case #1

Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder

b) Joe's girlfriend says, "you're always saying you're committed to me, but you still won't marry me. Why haven't you proposed yet?"

Joe "I am committed to you, but there is know sense in rushing into things. Plus we are too busy to get married right now. Maybe we can plan to get engaged sometime down shithe! road. "

Girlfriend "Why does everything have to be planed? Why can't you be spontaneous?"

Joe "Why does it matter when we get married? You should quit worrying about it."

Girlfriend "You never pay attention to my feelings you always do everything your own way, your never there for me. I'm starting to wonder if you even care about me.

Joe "What do you mean I'm never there for you? I was there last night. Why would I not care about you I do everything that needs to be done and I pay all of shithe! bills. If I didn't care for you why would I tell you that I do."

Girlfriend "Do you even love me?"

Joe "I guess I love you. You have all of shithe! qualities that I want in a girlfriend."

Girlfriend "I'm leaving! You don't even care about my feelings."

Case #1 justification B

At shithe! beginning Joe says that they are too busy too get married. This is because Joe is always working and doesn't have a lot of spare time. When he says, maybe they can get engaged sometime down shithe! road there are two possible meaning. First of all he is putting off shithe! making a decision about getting married. Secondly, if he is going to get engaged he wants to plan it out ahead of time to stay organized. When his wife asks him why he is never spontaneous he avoids shithe! question and says that it is good to be organized. This also hints that Joe not capable of doing things that he does not have planned. Joe's wife asks him why he is never there for her and he says he was there last night. His wife is talking about being there emotionally and he is talking about physically. Joe has a hard time recognizing his emotions and therefore can't understand shithe! emotions that his wife tries to express to him. Then again when his wife says he does not care about her he says that he does everything that he needs to do. Once again he changes shithe! subject off of his feelings. He thinks she should believe that he cares about her because he says so, but he is unable to sense shithe! lack of emotional connection. Then at shithe! end of shithe! conversation Joe says he loves her because she has all of shithe! qualities that she wants in a girl. This shows Joe's attention to detail and his lack of bringing up how he feels. He can't come up with how he feels about her overall, but he knows that she has specific qualities that he wants.

Case #

Histrionic Personality Disorder

a) Elaine's long lost friend from high-school asks her "I heard you're finally engaged-what's your fiancee like? And why do you think she's shithe! one?"

Elaine "My fiancee is just so wonderful and he is big and strong. I must just be shithe! luckiest woman in shithe! whole wide world. He has to be shithe! one for me because he reminds me of a prince charming. He is just so dreamy and he always tells me how pretty I am.

Friend "Where did you meat him?"

Elaine "I met him on vacation. He came up to me and told me how beautiful I was. He swept me off my feet. I was just like a dream. It was love at first sight. Then he took me out on a boat like thingy on shithe! sea."

Friend "What does he look like?"

Elaine "He looks like prince. He is just so perfect and he gets me everything I want. I'm so happy! I can't wait to get married and have a huge house. Like a castle. Like that castle in shithe! fairytail movies."

Friend "Did you here that Kara and Dave got married last month?"

Elaine "Get out of town! That amazing! Oh yea and when we get married were moving to shithe! beach. I just love shithe! beach; it's always so sunny. Except I don't like those little crab like thingies their so icky and gross, but I still can't wait to get married.

Friend "Well I have to get going. I was good seeing you Elaine. Good luck with prince charming."

Elaine "I was just so great to see you! I'm so glade we got a chance catch up and have girl talk. I can't believe how long it's been. Don't be a stranger O.K. girlfriend.

Case # Justification A

Elaine starts to explain what her fiancee is like in very broad terms. She never goes into any details about her fiancee because she only looks at shithe! broad picture. Also Elaine is way over dramatic in shithe! way she talk as well as her facial expressions. She talks about how great her fiance is to prove to her friend how lucky she is and to show that she can get shithe! guy of her dreams. Maybe this is a friend that she was envious of in high school and she is trying to get her approval. Elaine uses words that are not very sophisticated like thingy and icky. She seems to just want attention and doesn't care if she seems intelligent or not. When her friend brings up something about one of her other friends getting married she is really dramatic for a few seconds, but then she starts talking about something else right away. She always wants to be shithe! center of attention and doesn't really seem to be genuinely interested in anybody else. It is also hard for Elaine to focus her attention on something for to long of a period.

The departure and the conflict with the sea Arachne.

T H E Q U E S T ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

I was standing there all by myself thinking of what Belopolis use to look like all of the crops a whole feild full of them. years the town of belopolis has been fighting to servive. No crops have grown since the terribly disaster; we are on our last sources of food. It seems as if belopolis is disappearing under our feet without even knowing it. Vultures are all over the dry and dusty street waiting for someone to die so they are able to pounce on them and rip off shreds of meat off the helpless bones.

Why young sir i am looking for Nectarios Bakopolus. Yes i am Nectarios Bakopolus. I have been sent by my king to find you. Well can you please tell me your name? My name? my name is Lamango. Well Lamango what would you like to talk to me about? The king would like u to come to a dinner at his castle. Why i would be happy to come over to the king's castle. May i ask what the occasion is? You will be told when you get to the kings castle, if we leave now we should get there before it gets dark.

Help with essay on quest

Then I Nectarios and you Lamango shall leave my hometown now.

Lamango and i set off for the kings castle. It was a nice walk for the first hour then it got hard since i have not had a proper meal for 1 months.

I walked in to a big hall. Lemango led me to the head of the table where the king sat. I looked at the food as if it was to good to be true, the king asked if I liked the look of that, I answered him why yes of course i do i haven't do eaten a proper meal for 1 long and hard year. I asked him why i was brought here and he asked me if I was able to go on a quest with 5 other people, i was shocked with excitement I hadn't been on a adventure since 4 years ago. He asked if I would take a seat.

I went over to a man on the other side of the table. I went to sit down to make the 5th person when I noticed that the man I was sitting next to only had one eye, he was tall and thin. Hello sir my name is poly. Hello my name is Nectarios and I am from the dry and helpless town of Belopolis. The king said at the top of his voice here come the other 0 people. They walked up were I was when I introduced myself, so they introduced themselves to the king and sat down. The king said loudly quiet people I have chosing you all to go and do a quest for me.

We spent the night at the king's castle. The next morning we woke up at 600am for a early set off in to the sun set. We are now on our second day there has been no interruptions yet! The fresh morning breeze was in my hair blowing it back and forth with every gust. Then all of a sudden the ship jolted, my men and i went flying from one end to the other one of them straight off the side of the ship in to the splashing water. Poly was looking off the side of the ship we he got pulled off as I went to grab him there was an enormous creature that resembled a spider. A man yelled it's the sea arachne with her invisible webs. I was shocked, I remember thinking what is a sea arachne? Than as it appeared slowly out of the hole or the spiders home. My men were getting pulled out of the ship every second and I could not do a thing to stop it.

I can see the spider as clear as ever it is getting closer every minute. It was at the front of the boat when I managed to grab poly out of the web the spider construcked. I yelled at the top of my voice "come on Poly we need to get the swards out of the back of the ship." "Lets go then while we can." Poly and I ran as fast as we could, when we got back to the front of the boat I could see he spiders teeth coming at me closing me in. I went to scream when I felt Poly push me over. Then watched as he stabed at the spider. The spider came down so close to the boat that Poly was able to get the sward in to the beasts eye. I had a cut across my chest I could only see burled fingers I could hear the spiders very high pitched scream for the help as it fell back into the water and vanished. We did it we defeted the spider. I could hear the ruph voice of Poly, "Captain are you ok?" I answered him "yes I am fine." We all ate our so called dinner as I was thinking of Belopolis. "Captain" "Yes" "We should go to bed so we are ready for whatever hits us next." I could hear the terrier in his voice.

I waited until everyone was asleep before I went back to the front of the boat and took out a picture of my beautiful wife. She was a lovely person, her hair was soft and gently when I gave her a hug her skin was like silk. My wife was the daughter of Demeter. She was taken by Hades the god of the underworld, Demeter has neglected our town, Belopolis. That's why we are in drought and people are facing the danger of famine.

Scylla and the Whirlpool

T H E Q U E S T ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

I was up all night thinking about my wife. It was early in the morning, it was foggy and very cold. There was no one around.

I was looking around taking in the time where I am not going to get killed or hurt really badly. Once everyone was up it was all going well, the sun was shinning I could feel that it was going to be a very nice day.

I then looked out over the sea and then I saw it the two big rock pilled up about three to four metres high, with a narrow channel, the rocks towering over each side of the channel. I watched the rocks go past my head as we entered into the dark waters with the rocks just standing there watching my every move. My whole crew looked very scared and didn't know what to do as I was looking at their faces I felt the boat start to move from side to side.

That's when I saw the hand of scylla then she started to appear slowly. Her head was appearing it was the first time I saw her, she had 6 heads and scylla's hair was made out of snakes there was also a ring of dogs around her waist she was one of the most scariest, ugliest looking thing that I have seen in my life and the different journeys that I have been on. Scylla hated us being there you could see it in her eyes they were looking to kill just the sight of blood would set her off to stop anything in her way.

She killed faithful men Poly and 5 of other men as I got so angry and upset with her and told my men to get the cross bows as fast as they could. When the came back with the crossbows we all started firing as fast as our human hands could. But she just seemed to stand there and not do a thing. One of my men jumped out on to her leg and then climbed up and started cutting off the snakes that made up scyllas hair. The snakes were peeking at us and the boat which then led to all sorts of mischief so there for there were suddenly lots of holes appearing.

As I quickly turned the boat we were heading straight in to the whirlpool. It must off been at least the 7th time to day as it was getting dark and hard to see where we were going. It seemed as if the whirlpool was broken. As I was thinking that I herd a interesting noise, a sucking noise. Then as I turned around I could see the whirlpool going as fast and I and my men could feel the boat being sucked in to it.

All of my men were very scared an didn't know what to do as I told them "Quickly get the ores and row as hard as you can!" as I said that we were about to hit the whirlpool when it disappeared in to the water again. After we were right on top of it it started moving up to a faster speed then were were sucked down in to the whirlpool I could see my men's faces as we went down then another strang thing happened we were spit back out in to the open ocean I couldn't believe our luck.

I watched as we were drifting away from scylla and the whirlpool. Then as the sun went down we had our dinner which was only a piece of bread and a glass of wine. The I heard a noise from in the back of the ship as I went to look one off my men yelled to me "Captain, how are we going to fight like this every day when we are living on scraps?" "Well I am not sure and I don't think that I can do it much longer ether but that is what we have to do to get back our land.

We were all very tired as I remembered that sound I herd in the back so I went back and had a look to my disgrace there was Poly tied up to a chair. I took off the piece of cloth off from around his mouth. Then the rope from around his arms and legs. Poly started yelling about haw he can't believe that the other crew members did that so I asked him "Do you now who would do such a thing?" "no I don't know who did it but I wish I did because I am so upset about this." "Well I am glad that you are ok." "so I am." "we should get some sleep we are sure to have another big day tomorrow."

The Amulet in the tree

T H E Q U E S T ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

As the morning came I was lying in my bed thinking about my men and wondering why they would tie Poly up like that. I was up to see the sun set it was beautiful

Sight imagery in Oedipus at Colonus

"All I shall say will be clear-sighted indeed" pg. 0

"How bitter blindness is" pg. 6

"Not with lost eyes, but looking in your eyes as if I were a child of yours, I beg mercy for him, the beaten man" pg.

"It is my own beaten self no feast for the eyes; yet in me is a more lasting grace than beauty" pg. 117

"You scoundrel… on you and yours forever may the sun god, watcher of all the world, confer such days as I have had, and such an age as mine" pg. 1

"O father, father! I wish some god would give you eyes to see the noble prince who brings us back to you" pg. 14

"I think you'll see how terrible an end terrible wrath may have. You have, I think, a permanent reminder in your lost, irrecoverable eyes" pg. 148

"Not to be born surpasses thought and speech. The second best is to have seen the light and then to go back quickly whence we came." pg. 14

"Who would not grieve for you, sweet brother! You go with open eyes to death!" pg 157

The sight imagery prevalent throughout the Oedipus trilogy serves not only as a symbol of Oedipus' suffering and repentance but reflects a theme prevalent throughout the plays that of human transformation from arrogance to humility and reckless pride to tempered wisdom.

While Oedipus' blindness does serve as a constant reminder of his sins and may be perceived as one of the ultimate effects of human arrogance and folly, it also seems to endow Oedipus with an uncommon wisdom, a prescient quality similar to that possessed by Tiresias. He seems instinctively to know that he has reached the place of his death and ultimate salvation when he enters the grove at Colonus and also knows that, as a man who has forgiven himself and been forgiven by the gods, his dying blessing carries power. Furthermore, far from being unmanned by his injury, Oedipus seems to be more authoritative and stalwart than ever, denying both Creon and his own son in their attempts to sway him. This stubbornness is not one of pride or anger, as Oedipus seems to have learned humility in his wanderings and attempts to reason with the chorus and Theseus, rather than responding with swift violence, as he was prone to do in his youth. His blindness may thus have been necessary in order for him to realize the degree of his own guilt in his fate and come to terms with his past actions, finding peace, if not happiness, at last. The wound, while being a most terrible punishment (or perhaps because of it), allows Oedipus to gain the necessary wisdom to temper his own pride and stubborn determination, or at least become more judicious in their application.

By presenting Oedipus' blindness as the catalyst of his transformation, Sophocles may be suggesting that the only way for a tormented soul to find peace and self-understanding if by separating oneself from the outside world, looking inside oneself and analyzing the transgressions of the past objectively, without constantly being reminded of the nature of their sins and without being affected by the opinions of others, for salvation and peace can only come from within, not through the will of a god or other

Eosinophil

Eosinophils are one of the five different types of white blood cells belonging to the subgroup called Polymorphonuclear Leukocytes. Eosinophils are produced in the bone marrow and then migrate to tissue, and they are characterized by large red cytoplasm granules. These cells have the purpose of giving large parasites such as helminths, a hard time. They attach via Cb receptors, the Cb having been produced during the course of alternative pathway complement activation by the helminth. The eosinophils release various substances from their granules. These include major basic protein plus cationic proteins, peroxidase, arylsulphatase B, phospholipase D and histaminase. The granule contents are capable of damaging the parasite membrane. Eosinophil function is incompletely understood. They are prominent at sites of allergic reactions and with parasitic larvae infections ( helminths ). Eosinophil secretory products inactivate many of the chemical mediators of inflammation and destroy cancer cells. This phenomenon is most obvious with mast cell-derived mediators. Mast cells produce a chemo tactic factor for eosinophils. When a foreign substance enters the body, lymphocytes and neutrophils release certain substances to attract eosinophils which release toxic substances to kill the invader.

Neutrophils

Neutrophils respond to chemo tactic signals and leave capillaries by a complex process, involving margination, rolling and then attaching, following which they emigrate between the endothelial cells (extravasation, or diapedesis). Several mediators are involved. They include substances produced by micro-organisms, and by the cells participating in the inflammatory process. One such is a substance called interleukin-1 (IL-1), which is released by macrophages as a result of infection or tissue injury. Another is histamine, released by circulating basophils, tissue mast cells, and blood platelets. It causes capillary and venular dilatation. Ca and C5a produced during complement activation are chemo tactic for phagocytic cells. Another group of substances produced are the acute phase proteins. As a result of tissue damage, the liver produces a substance called C-reactive protein. This activates the complement system by the classical pathway, and as a result Ca is formed and coats the organism, facilitating its phagocytes. Custom writing service can write essays on White Blood Cells

The peripheral immune system is activated and neutrophils from the bone marrow enter the blood. This increase in neutrophils will make more neutrophils present at the site of the injury. It is believed that these neutrophils cause damage to the axons of the nervous system. Neutrophils also make enzymes that kill bacteria, but also kill tissue which leads to damage of the nervous system.

Openings of films are usually indicative of where the rest of the film will take us. In this case there is no exceptions. It starts out in a minimalist style. There is no opening credits to the actors or filmmakers, simply a seven letter word in the bottom left hand corner that expresses the essence of the film. In this case it is the trafficking of drugs in America that is being explored. Steven Soderbergh endeavours to orchestrate several distinct interweaving story lines that convey the enormity of the drug trade and its effects on all those from the bottom to the top of the supply chain. He uses a pastiche of styles and techniques to convey the otherwise confusing narrative and as a result reveals its themes and perspective.

The most obvious example of how Soderbergh achieves this is through different coloured filters and lights he applies to various scenes. He does this to help separate the stories and to immediately locate and familiarize ourselves with whose story we are dealing with. The stories are unravelled side by side, but they are never integrated into each other, except through location or overlapping editing. They arent linked at all through plot, only through theme - the macro world of drugs. As far as it is apparent the colours are there to place us in a location, they are not linked to character, as the characters move freely through different colour schemes. For example Robert Wakefield (Michael Douglas) the U.S. President's newly appointed drug czar, travels from the cool detached blue of the north states down to the over-saturated glossed up California and further down into the tobacco filth of Mexico. They also do not appear to be linked to plot or emotion as they do not change when there is a dramatic high point. There is however an inconsistency to the colours that make the film very irritating and difficult to follow. There are times when, for no apparent reason, Soderbergh will change the colour scheme. Suddenly the north states of Washington DC and Ohio arent blue anymore and the the preppy school kids are overdosing in a saturated colour - bled mess instead of the sterile blue that we have previously been conditioned to associate them with. Or Mexico will suddenly be alive with disco colours as Tijuana State policeman Javier Rodriguez (Benicio Del Toro) finds a unique way to bring to justice a gay assassin. It becomes even more confusing when characters start leaving their states and moving into others. Perhaps these deviations are linked to character or plot changes, perhaps Soderbergh is colouring the kids at the party in plush photo paper as a way of saying this is the kids foray into the glamourous life of drugs and money. Are they the babies playing dress-ups to the mommies in downtown San Diego?

Soderbergh chose to shoot the film himself under a pseudo name and employed the technique of handheld doco-style camera work. The Wobble cam technique most of the time feels alert without being too ostentatious. The psychological effect is that it makes us feel like a voyeur as we hover like a fly on the wall, picking up on the action from all angles, flying in to a blurred shaky close-up then out again to wide shot. The spontaneous zoom is also used in moments when the director feels we need to get closer to the action. The result helps to reinforce the realistic style of the doco-drama and to help portray a sense of belief and truth to the stories. It serves not to glamorize the characters or create a hero but to show ordinary flawed people in a situation where the villain is the War on Drugs. The only problem with this villain is it is undefined, unstoppable and in the end unresolved. How can you wage a war on your own family is the question we are left asking. The style like the villain is inconsistent, rough, cruel, unpredictable and in the end a force that cant be stopped. It tends to isolate the viewer, unsettle us, make us feel out of control and on edge. It makes it very difficult for us to relate emotionally to it ( the exception being the story of Caroline, the drug addicted daughter of the drug czar, but this is only because the victimized subject matter lends itself to empathy.)

It doesnt provide a solution but it doesnt provide non-interfered picture either. Soderbergh does have an opinion, even though he is very careful in how he expresses it. There are a few speeches on the drug issues that provide clues to the direction the film takes but they are disguised in characters that are discredited in other ways so as not to appear preachy. For example, Seths speech to Robert as they look for Caroline

Woah. Why dont you just back the fuck up, man. To this place? What is that shit? Ok, right now, all over this great nation of ours, hundred thousand white people from the suburbs are cruisin around downtown asking every black person they see You got any drugs? You know where I can score some drugs? Think about the effect that that has on the psyche of a black person, on their possibilities. I... God I guarantee you bring a hundred thousand black people into your neighborhood, into fuckin Indian Hills, and theyre asking every white person they see You got any drugs? You know where I can score some drugs?, within a day everyone would be selling. Your friends. Their kids. Heres why its an unbeatable marketforce man. Its a three-hundred percent markup value. You can go out on the street and make five-hundred dollars in two hours, come back and do whatever you want to do with the rest of your day and, Im sorry, youre telling me that... youre telling me that white people would still be going to law school?

The main clues to Soderberghs opinion is expressed through the image frame. What he decides to show you and what he leaves out. More times than not he leaves things out or finds ways of disguising or obscuring them within the frame. He uses a lot of out of focus foreground action, which tends to conceal part of the frame. Its also concealing the whole of the drug picture. These are characters who are only affected in part, who are never connected to the whole. He also burns out the white highlights in the background, bleeding it into the foreground almost eating into the characters like a particular white powder eats away at you. When he isnt concealing within the frame he is letting the action play outside the frame. There is a certain spontaneity about doing so and we feel that the present reality is only temporary as we move quickly through to the next story.

The component of sound is used to blend the scenes and actions together with the dialogue of the next scene beginning before the image arrives. Editing is also engaged as a tool to amalgamate the stories together, via dissolves and assimilated actions. For example one character walks through a door to the outside and in the next scene another character walks inside through another door.

Editing is also used to help carry the films pace, rhythm and dynamics. Soderbergh moves between lengthy takes and short snappy cuts. The lengthy takes allow the frame to wander or to hover over a particularly uncomfortable image. Within these moments come the silence, the time to absorb the full entropy, and the time to provide the intricacies that help complete the film. The short cuts help to build momentum and pace within a dramatic moment. For example when the Mexico cops catch a drug cartel at the border, or when the DEA agents catch the middle-man Eduardo Ruiz. Sometimes they jump cut between actions or the frame jumps around on the same action, creating a kind of dyslexia in screen language and therefore a break in our own thought patterns. Sound is also sometimes overlapped in a similar fashion especially in the school kids scenes.

Traffic ends as suddenly as it began. There is no grand finale, no string quartet playing beautiful crescendos, no real fixed answers. It ends with Caroline, our victimized daughter, the one person we are willing to pull out the heart strings for. She is in rehab giving a very sobering speech.

On the good days, I feel like I get it, like it all makes sense. I can stay in the moment, I dont have to control everything in the future, and I believe everything is gonna work out fine. On the bad days I just want to grab the phone and start dialing numbers. I want to pull my hair and run through the streets screaming. But thanks to the people Ive met in these rooms, like Margaret and Jim and Sarah, ( a dramatic pause) Im pretty sure Im gonna make it through today.

Her father replies to the group, We are hear to listen. Perhaps this sums up Soderberghs stance the best. He doesnt have the answer to this very real problem, but this is what hes done about it. Hes created a voice that wants to be listened to, even if it is an ambiguous one. A voice that isnt so clear on content but very strong on style.

The Avro Arrow

In 1717, the manufacturing of beaver hats was begun in Montreal. Four finished hats were turned out every day. Then came the order directly from the King of France to kill the industry. There was to be no competition from the colony for French hat makers. "Colonies are established solely for the utility of the country that forms them", Louis XIV said. Two and a half centuries later, instead of from Versailles, the pressure came from Washington (Orchard, 1, p. 50).

The creativity, ingenuity, perseverance and skill of the people that created A.V. Roe (AVRO) Canada limited, has set the standard for Canadian technology. Their foresight and management made it Canada's largest corporation in just 1 years. A.V. Roe was faced with the challenge of producing a supersonic aircraft with a new engine. The airplane was to operate at twice the speed of any existing model and in all aspects the aircraft was technically advanced, both for the time of it's design and for the considerable advancements made in the field of aerodynamics (Zurring, 1, p. 1). The Avro Arrow was built to fend off the ever- changing Soviet threat and to begin a new area in Canadian defence. Britain, US and France had been relied upon in the past for Canadian defence; it was now time to rely on our military and air force for the protection of Canada. Challenges that faced A.V. Roe in producing the plane included, manpower, engineering design, flight testing, finance, and maintaining relations with a single client, the Canadian government (Zurring, 1, p. ). But, the most mysterious and unexplained aspect of the Avro Arrow has been the involvement of the Americans and their role in the cancellation of Canada's greatest airplane.

Why was the Arrow cancelled? The official reason given by the Canadian government was that the missile age was coming to an end and manned jet fighter aircraft, including the Arrow, had become obsolete. Accordingly, the new American missile system, called the Bomarc missile system, was to be purchased, and because Canada could not afford both the Arrow and the Bomarc, the Arrow was going to be cancelled ( Zurring, 1, p. 165). Behind the scenes pressure from the United States for Canada to buy the Bomarc a system that was untried, unproven and would eventually prove useless was direct and effective. In a meeting between the Canadian defence minister, George Pearkes, and the U.S. secretary of state for defence, Neil McElroy, the Canadian government asked what would happen if Canada refused to buy the Bomarc. The Canadians were told that the consequence would be the emplacement of at least one more Bomarc Squadron in the U.S., south of the Great Lakes. Because the Bomarc had a limited range of 50 miles, this would mean, in the advent of war against incoming Soviet missiles from the north, the certainty of nuclear holocaust above Canadas most densely populated regions. Consequently, the Canadian government decided to purchase the Bomarcs, put them further north in Canada, and terminate the Arrow ( ) .

As for the Bomarc missile system, admitted by the Americans themselves to be entirely for the the defence of the American Strategic Air Command and not for Canada, it turned out to be an expensive dud which became obsolete before it was installed( ).

A significant but little known fact is that the Arrow was the only aircraft in the world capable of downing the new, top secret U spy plane developed by the CIA, which in the late 150s was overflying countries around the globe. The U flew at an altitude of 70,000 feet, unreachable by any existing interceptor but well within the Arrows range( ) . In 160, Defence Minister Pearkes admitted the U was overflying Canada and that without interceptor aircraft, Canada could do nothing about this.

The Avro Jetliner was destroyed to allow the Americans to introduce their Boeing Jetliner, eight years after the Canadian Jetliner had first flown. Just as the Mark II was about to fly, and in all likelihood bring the worlds speed record to Canada, thirtyseven supersonic aircraft were scrapped. To make sure no new aircraft would rise from the cuttings of the blow torches, a freetrade agreement in defence supplies, the CanadaU.S. Defence Production Sharing Agreement of 15, was signed. That agreement integrated the defence industries of the two countries. Canada agreed to rely on the United States for defense technology, and has never again tried to be selfreliant in the aerospace and defense industries. Instead of producing its own aircraft, Canadian industry was reoriented to produce parts for U.S. contractors. In 158, within three months of the Arrows cancellation, Canada joined NORAD, which integrated the air defence of the two countries under a joint command headquartered in Colorado. In the future, Defence Minister Pearkes said, the United States would supply jet interceptors defence if Canada should require it. The operation of these two agreements ensured that Canada would never again create and produce hightech aircraft. The very country that has invaded Canada repeatedly, and has been by far its most dangerous and sustained threat over the centuries, now looks after Canadas defence.

Canada went on to spend billions of dollars on civilian and military aircraft from

American firms, aircraft less suited to its needs and climate. The Canadian defence

industry today consists mainly of subsidiaries of American corporations. These

subsidiary firms are encouraged to station scouts in the United States to catch word of

pending U.S. contracts. They can then make a bid to produce U.S. weapons.

With the cancellation of the Arrow thousands of the highly skilled engineers, designers and aerospace workers, some gathered with great difficulty from all over the world, who for ten years had refused repeated offers from U.S. firms to leave Canada, were thrown out of work and now had little choice. Twentysix of Avros top engineers, including Jim Chamberlin from British Columbia, Avros chief of design, were sent by the Canadian government to NASA, where their skills played a crucial role in landing an American on the moon. Chamberlin was later described by NASA management as probably one of the most brilliant men ever to work with NASA. Highly skilled Avro engineers made their contributions in almost all fields of aviation and technology throughout the Western world, not only with NASA but also with Boeing of Seattle, RCA in Massachussetts, HawkerSiddeley of England, Fokker of Holland, and the European Space Agency.

With an eightyear lead on the United States in civilian jetliner technology and the Avro Arrow, the Canadian aerospace industry could have taken on the best in the world. It would also have been competition for U.S. corporations. Instead, Avro scrambled for whatever business it could find, at one point landing a contract to produce pots and pans. In 16, Avro sold what remained of its gutted operations to de Havilland, leaving a wealth of concepts, ideas and designs that, over the next three decades, were used by leading British and American firms. And the myth began to be fostered that Canada did not have the skills, capabilities or resources to build worldclass industries on its own.

If the Jetliner and Arrow had gone ahead, they, like the CF100, would have been purchased by other countries. American industrialist Howard Hughes was interested in producing the Jetliner in the United States, and several American companies wished to order the aircraft from Avro. An American company had signed a contract with Avro to produce the Iroquois under license the first contract of its kind signed by the United States with a Canadian company. France had approached Avro about purchasing 00 Iroquois engines for use in its Mirage jet fighter. Both the United States and Britain were interested in the Arrow because they had nothing comparable.

The technology, the research and the talent, as well as the money since spent on foreign aircraft, both military and commercial, would have remained in Canada. A dynamic aerospace industry would have established itself as one of the major engines driving Canadas economy. Equally significant, Canada would have had the capability to patrol and defend its own borders and airspace against incursion by all intruders. If the Arrow had flown with Iroquois engines, it almost certainly would have broken world records for both speed and altitude. Had the Canadian public seen that happen, cancellation of the Arrow would have been impossible. That is why the blowtorches came in before the Mark IIs could lift off the ground.

The Arrow was not cancelled because it was costly or obsolete or defective. It was, in the words of electronics engineer and Arrow researcher, Palmiro Campagna, erased from existence, because it was too damn good!
