Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice" portrays a woman, Portia, as the hero of the play. Shakespeare's comedy takes place in 16th century Europe, and shows faltering men amidst a woman disguised as a man, Portia. The irony is that Portia, like all women at the time, were viewed as inferior to men and could not take place in mainstream business, yet alone save a man's life, Antonio, in a heated courtroom battle. Dressed as a man in a courtroom battle, she is the key to victory for Antonio and friends. She decisively and cleverly realizes that the bond in question requires one pound of flesh as payment if the bond is not paid in full on time. But with flesh comes blood, and blood in the laws of Venice counts as murder, and therefore the bond is nullified in court. But through her aggressive tactics and strong will she reverses the punishment inflicted upon Antonio over to Shylock, which must pay a hefty sum of wealth because of this illegal bond. The court grants her request, more likely because Shylock is a Jew rather than serving due justice, but this is a prime example of Portia's cutthroat way of dealing with problems that unfold before her. Surrounded by stumbling men, Portia stands out as the heroine by making things right for everybody including herself, which makes her the hero and heroine of the play.

Bassanio's friend, Antionio, is in a heap of trouble for not paying back the loan in due time. Portia uses her smarts and cunning attitude to help save him. Dressed as a male lawyer's clerk, the heroine is on the defensive for Antonio. Portia says, "The quality of mercy is not strained. It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven," (Act 4.i.10-11). Stressing mercy and other dominant Christian morals in which she and everybody else in the courtroom, Portia effectively isolates Shylock as the only Jew. She wins the Duke of Venice's bias as well, as he says to Shylock, "We all expect a gentle answer, Jew," (4.i., 5). Lawfully he has no power to rule in the Christian's favor because it would show Venice as a city with a corrupt justice system. Antonio says, "The duke cannot deny the course of law / Since that the trade and profit of the city," meaning that Antonio is sure his fate is near (III.iii.6, 1).

Shylock is on the verge of having his bond. He stresses the law, saying "I shall have my bond. Speak not against my bond," (III.iii.4). And, for a time, his strategy works perfectly. Being offered ten times over the original sum the bond calls for and with Bassanio offering his own life in exchange for Antonio's, Shylock still refuses, replying coldly, "I am not bound to please thee with my answers" as to show that Shylock doesn't need to change the bond to make the defendants happy(IV.i.64).

Seeing that the forgiveness defense is running out of steam, the heroine goes straight for the kill. Realizing that the bond requires one pound of flesh and Shylock is an alien, she figures out that it is impossible to extract flesh from a person without blood coming with it. Saying, "But in cutting it, if thou dost shed / One drop of Christian blood…," Portia effectively presents the difference between Shylock the Jew, and Antonio the Christian (4.i.-). In this cunning legal maneuver, drawing blood from a Venetian citizen is unlawful from an alien, Shylock as non-Christians are lawfully considered aliens . Antonio's life is saved and Shylock sulking in defeat has more coming for him. As he has attempted to murder, by the laws of Venice, his estate is to be removed. Portia adds insult by requesting that Shylock be imprisoned or killed. The Duke reduces the sentencing to becoming convert to Christianity and to give a sizeable portion of his estate to his daughter, who betrayed him.Order Custom Essay on The Lone Heroine

Though she appears to be a simple woman, she is much more through these heroic actions. Effectively saving Antonio through a cunning yet simple legal maneuver, Portia stands out in front of stumbling men around her who could not have come up with a better plan. In fact, Antonio was prepared to die, saying "The duke cannot deny the course of law," (III.iii.6). Through saving Antonio's life and setting things straight for all Christians, Portia would be viewed as a total hero, as Christian supremacy was of general acceptance at the time. Though very hypocritical, stressing forgiveness yet viciously attacking Shylock at the first chance suggesting that he be killed, Portia's cunning and aggressiveness cannot be denied. Overcoming her status of a woman as well as out-doing a whole group of men make Portia the perfect hero and heroine of both the 16th century Europe and today.

Traditional Asian diets are predominantly based on cereals except in a few pastoral regions. The consumption of animal products is relatively low as compared to Western countries. Recent scientific findings demonstrated that diets high in plant foods are associated with more health benefits, such as decreased risks of cardiovascular diseases, hypertension and obesity, and cancers of several sites. As per capita income increases with industrial development in Asia, there is a tendency to increase the consumption of added sugar, fats, oils and animal products and decreased consumption of cereal products, particularly in higher income regions. Consumers need to be cautioned about the trend in such dietary changes that may lead to adverse health effects. Contemporary dietary recommendations urge the consumption of a variety of cereals or grains, the proper storage of cereals including corns to avoid fungal contamination, and all year-round supply and consumption of vegetables and fruits. Soybeans, lentils, peas and other types of beans are important legumes in Asia; some soyfoods are tofu, soymilk, dahl and tempeh. Regular intake of soyfoods probably reduced the risk of several types of cancers and lowered the blood serum cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein and triglyceride levels. Soy isoflavones may have a function in the prevention of hormone-related cancers. Salty and salted/cured meat, fish, and vegetables are common ingredients in Southeast Asia and they might have contributed to the high stomach cancer rate. Diets high in Cantonese-style salted fish, prepared by softening under partial decomposition, could be associated with increased risk of nasopharyngeal cancer. The use of MSG may cause adverse symptoms to some individuals. Another compound of health concern is the -Monochloropropane-1, -Diol (-MCPD), which has been found in some soy sauce products containing acid-hydrolyzed vegetable proteins. Appropriate quality control is needed to ensure the compliance of safe levels of contaminants.

Indian diets tend to contain more vegetables, less meat and fewer additives and packaged and processed foods than the traditional British diet, said Dr. Britton, of the Division of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Nottingham in England. The findings were similar for children eating vegetarian and non-vegetarian diets.

Indian children who ate the most Indian food were least likely to have abnormally sensitive airways, a sign of asthma. The study also found that the more Indian food they ate, the lower their risk of allergy. The results were similar even after the researchers took into account other asthma triggers such as living with dogs and cats or parental smoking. Since only one white child ate an Indian diet, the researchers could not adequately determine the effects of an Indian diet on non-Indian children.

Typical Australian eating habits do not provide adequate carbohydrate, and the focus of a winning diet is to increase our intake of these fuel foods. How much do you need? For general health benefits and to provide energy for a light to moderate training program, nutritionists recommend that carbohydrate foods should make up more than half our total energy intake. Athletes in heavy daily training may need to eat higher levels again or to achieve special carbohydrate intake targets. For maximum daily glycogen storage an intake of 7-10g of carbohydrate per kg of your body weight is needed. This means an intake of 400-700g of carbohydrate for a typical endurance athlete.

For most Australians, a high-fat diet is second nature. Although our body needs some fats and oils, our typical eating patterns well exceed these requirements. The health disadvantages of high-fat eating include an increased risk of becoming overweight, and problems with heart disease and some cancers. For an athlete the most immediate problem is that a high fat intake displaces some of the energy we really need from carbohydrate foods. In a winning diet, lower-fat eating makes way for our new fuel foods. Cutting back a little on fats and oils is good for all athletes. However, if you are also concerned with losing some body fat or keeping it off, then you should pay special attention to low-fat eating strategies. Lower fat eating means reducing our intake of foods that are visibly fatty. However, many foods hide large amounts of fats and oils, often added in cooking or preparation. These should also be targeted. Alcohol has a strong link with sport through sponsorship. Although we have no need to drink alcohol in a winning diet, it can still be part of the healthy lifestyle of an athlete. Whether you drink at all is a personal decision. Unfortunately some sports people use alcohol badly, in terms of their health but also their performance.

If you order your research paper from our custom writing service you will receive a perfectly written assignment on Slaughterhouse Five. Slaughterhouse-Five is a story of a man, Billy Pilgrim, who every once in a while will become "travel in time". The book itself is written as an anti-war book with many references to Dresden and the carpet bombings held there. This book has been on the topic of being banned since its release in 16. It has been banned on sexual, language and social concerns in the book, but has never been banned over a wide area or more than just a little town. This shows that Slaughterhouse-five should not be banned and not only read but part of the curriculum in the High Schools around the country.

Slaughterhouse-five does have a lot of vulgarity and sexual references in it but one has to remember that it is still just a book. "Shit. What do you know? What the hell they teach in college?" ch. This book was usually banned in middle school and high school age schools because of its language and vulgarity. But not only language is why people think it should be banned but also because it is referred to as an anti-war book and it was released in 16. At this time the Vietnam war was going on and this book was telling people that war is bad and you really don't have to go to it. This book portrays war as "unpatriotic" and "not needed". In a sense telling people how bad war was and how unnecessary it was.

Keeping in mind that this was an anti-war book and it did come out in 16 this still should be no grounds on why to ban a book. Books are part of our free speech and should not be banned because an author thinks one way or another. This book was written in reference to World War I but came out during the next war in American history 5 years later. This was no big coincidence because Vonnegut wanted to show how war was for him and to show the public how war can be. Banning a book this alone should not even come close to being reasonable. This book made people think about war and the true sides to it. It showed the other sides of war and expanded peoples thinking. And that's what a book should do, it should expand ones thinking and make them realize different things about the world. If this book should be banned it should be banned because it expands the mind.

Slaughterhouse-five is still reading material and almost anything to read is good for people. It is very well written and one of the all time great books of all time. Even though it does have some bad language and sexual references that really does not take away from the "wholeness" of the book. Some of Vonnegut's references may have also been made to "shock" people at the time or make them want to read further in to the book. If we ban a book for references to war and because of some bad language I think that would be violating our 1st amendment rights of free speech. Banning this book would be like banning "The tale of Peter Rabbit" because Peter goes into the garden and we don't want the people to hear about someone doing something bad. This book may not be appropriate for younger readers but should not be banned among the older readers.Order Custom Slaughterhouse Five paper

The biggest reason for this book being banned is because of its language and of its sexual content. Yes it does have some vulgar language and some sexual references. "Billy sniffed. His hot bed smelled like a mushroom cellar. He had had a wet dream about Montana Wildhack." Ch. 5 But this language is heard in everyday talk. Talking about a wet dream or saying words like "fuck" or "goddamn" is no grounds to ban a book. These words and phrases are things that High School aged children are prone to everyday. Now the Middle School age kids are different. They do not have as many years under their belt so they are not used to this language as much. Some of the also do not know when to use this language and what some it means. But the older High School ages can handle the use of this language. And by reading this book it opens their mind to another side of war. And expands their mind to not just one side of a subject like most books are, but the side of war that many people do not want to talk about.

After all is said and done Slaughterhouse-five is still considered one of the best works of our time. It shows us many periods of time all at once and reveals just what a war can do a person. There is some parts in this book that are not suitable for children but that does not mean they are not suitable for the older readers. The language in this book may in fact add to the wholeness of the book overall. Banning this book is overall a bad idea. Restricting it would be a better idea instead of banning it completely. High School aged kids are old enough to hear the language and understand what situations mean in the book. After all is said this book is not half as bad as some of the literature that has come out. And this is a real asset to a school to be able to teach it. If it is banned the kids will miss out on not only a great book but a mind opener.

Please note that this sample paper on Slaughterhouse Five is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman" is a play best summed up in its title; it is just that, the death of a salesman. This death is not necessarily the physical end to a human life, but the crumbling end to the dreams of the main character, Willie Loman.

The play was written in 14 and based on the concept of the American Dream. What is the American Dream? There are many definitions of it and each every person has their own. Most people feel if you have a family, house, car, decent job with an average salary, and a good social life, then you have reached the American Dream. The concept of the American Dream became a popular idea during the nineteenth century when millions of people migrated to the United States in search of better lives.

There are many connections to the concept of the American Dream in "Death of a Salesman". One is when Willy expresses his jealousy towards the successes of his brother Ben. According to Willy, Ben knew what he wanted. He started with the clothes on his back, walked into the jungle and came out enormously rich at the age of twenty-one. Another example was when Willy's imaginary memory of Ben describes their father as a great inventor who traveled with his whole family westwards through America. He was successful in selling his inventions and he also became rich. Another illustration of the American Dream was when Willy remembers an occasion when his son Biff was playing at Ebbets Field. There was this glow around him and people cheered his name when he came out. He was a star then and this kind of personal success is also a typical example of the American Dream. An additional example is when Willy himself experienced a personal success in his work. It was in 18 when his commission average was at its highest level.

Do my essay on Willy loman and his american dream in death of a salesman CHEAP !

The whole story of the play is a parody on the American Dream. Willy Loman is a weary 6 year old man who wants nothing more than to reach the American Dream, but in reality he fails, most likely due to the fact he chose the wrong dream. He is a salesman for a large company in New York. In his own mind, he is still as he used to be, well known and well respected among the clientele in the New England area. Things have changed though and the people Willie once knew in the business are no longer there and he no longer has the connections he once had. His inability to cope with and adapt to this changing business has caused, among other things, a loss in pay. Willie has lost his competitive edge, and with it his feeling of self worth and identity.

Willy's dream also revolves around his family, more specifically his son Biff. Biff is the firstborn and favorite son of Willie. Willie has high expectations of, and transfers his dreams onto Biff. Biff can not live up to the expectations of his father and has dreams of his own which cause Willie to see him as a loafer and bum with no desire to succeed. Although Willie's dreams are not realized in Biff, his son's respect his still important. This respect is lost when Biff catches his father in an affair with a young lady. Even though this is not talked about, it still creates tension and causes Biff to lose the respect he once held for Willie.

Willie's main philosophy in life is "Be liked and you will never want." This is another problem causing Willie to fail in his American Dream. Image is everything to Willie. In his past he was a well liked, well known, respected man who turned his image into his success, but his image has changed. He is no longer well known and so he makes less sales and less money. His loss in pay has caused him to borrow money just to support his family. The constant borrowing of money is a source of great tension for Willie.

The compounding of Willie's problems, the loss of his self-respect, and the loss of respect from others cause Willie to go mad. He sinks into a depressive state and loses touch with reality. He has no dream and now will to live causing him to entertain thoughts of suicide. In the end it is the love for his son and the belief that his insurance money will make Biff "magnificent" that gives him the needed excuse to end his life.

A man's life is his world and this world is expressed through his dreams and desires. "Death of a Salesman" is the loss and destruction of one man's dreams. The effects of this loss and destruction are utter madness that eventually leads to suicide. This dramatic work has a moral that should not soon be forgotten When a man loses his dreams he loses everything and a life without dreams is a dull and empty void.

As we gather here today, celebrating this milestone in each and every one of our lives, we end yet another chapter in the book we know as life. However, this is far from normal books. This is not necessarily a book we read from cover to cover, but one that is told in sections, or sagas if you will, passed on from one ear to the next. Whether it is told to our siblings, children, friends, or just acquaintances, it is much too extravagant of a story to tell in one sitting. As boring as some of us may think our lives are, the story is more exciting than any fictional novel you can find. This is because it is reality. The pages are written day by day, month by month, and year by year. The course of the story can change at any moment, and no one knows when that moment could be. We can only live our lives to the fullest, and let the story write itself.

The novel begins with birth. As we age older, we learn at an amazing pace. This is a different kind of learning, however, as opposed to school. These are life skills, such as opening our eyes, eating, walking, talking, and beginning to learn to fend for ourselves. As we progress a few chapters, we are introduced into the next section of the novel school. We begin our education, the knowledge we will need to be successful in life. Not only that, but here we meet our first friends. You will never forget these friends, no matter how old you are. I bet that if all of you took a minute to think about it, you could all remember at least half, probably more, of the students in your first kindergarten class. Just like a book, the names are engraved inside your head. These engravings will carry on with you for the rest of your life, with more being added to them every day.

As we skip ahead a chapter, we now come to the present high school. As much as the teachers hate to hear it, but as you move through school, the things you learn become less useful. The more you learn, the less likely it is you will ever use that information again in life. However, I am not at all saying that high school is pointless, although none of us will admit that now. High school is a very important part of our lives. Although you will learn some important things in your classes, the lessons in life that you will learn are what will carry on with you later in life. It is somewhat of an introduction to the real world. We learn to drive, get our first jobs, pay for some of our own meals, and possibly do some laundry or dishes. All of these skills are necessary for later in life. Also, many important lessons are learned. Lessons in trust, friendship, honesty, morality, faith, and many others are experienced very frequently. I remember just a couple years ago I had a very close friend, or so I thought. I did anything and everything for this friend. I gave him rides, let him borrow money, gave him a place to stay if he needed it, or whatever else he needed. I was being a good friend. A few months after all this had been going on, one of my other friends asked me, "Why are you friends with him?" Puzzled, I answered, "Because he's my friend." He replied, "No, he's not. All he does when you're not around is talk bad about you. He brags to everyone that he can get you to do anything he wants. He tells everyone he's not your friend. He says he's just using you. That kind of person is not a friend." As I dwelled on what he was telling me, I felt a mix of anger, sadness, and emptiness. I was so shocked I didn't really know what to think. Although it hurt me at the time, I realized later that I had learned an important lesson in life. Be careful who you trust. People aren't always who they seem to be. Make sure you know who you're talking to before you begin to speak. Lessons such as this are learned constantly in high school, whether we realize it or not. It is important that we take time out to reflect on things like this so we can learn the lessons we were meant to learn. Without these lessons we would be living in a false reality. That is why high school is such an important chapter in the book of life.

Now that this chapter has come to a close, we stand here looking straight ahead at the future. Just like a book, we think we may know what will happen in the coming chapters, but the story can twist and turn any way at any time. The future, to us students, is a man standing in the shadows. All you can see is a vague silhouette, but you have no clue what the light may reveal. All we can do is prepare ourselves for anything. Always assume the worst and the best. Keep your priorities in order. Work hard at everything you do, but don't forget to stop and have fun every once in a while. If you don't have fun in life, then what are you living for? Las Vegas Sin City or Family Resorts?

To most people, Las Vegas is synonymous with gambling and glitter; a slightly, pleasingly sinful fairyland for adults where they can watch the most entertaining performers and biggest names in show business in between bouts and playing games of chance that everyone knows favor the house. Locals call Las Vegas Fun City or The Entertainment Capital of the World. All I know is that this place is a place of lights and really big signs Just about everyone knows the desert gaming Mecca for lustier, grubbier pursuits that have earned it a worldwide reputation as Sin City.

Las Vegas is really about gambling, and the offshoot business attracted by the 4/7 preoccupation with gaming like loan sharking, prostitution, pawnshops, and those wonderful tiny little marriage chapels. Gamblers, at least non-professionals, tend to be impulsive people who are obsessed with chance and do things on the spur of the moment. Other Cities may talk of local heroes like former Presidents, generals, baseball players, or ice skating queens. In Las Vegas, hall-of-famers whose names are passed around blackjack tables, roulette wheels and keno parlors are more likely to be like pokers greatest Amarillo Slim, Tom McEvoy, or Frank Lefty Rosenthal, former sports gamblers.

Las Vegas didn't really begin coming into it's own, as a modern day international tourist center and gaming until a good looking, vicious hoodlum who grew up in Brooklyn named Benjamin Bugsy Siegel. He was co-founder of Murder, Incorporated, and came to Las Vegas planning to build huge casinos. Siegel was the mob's glamour boy, who could charm Hollywood beauties with one look. His scams brought him nowhere but dead.

Since Siegel's time, Las Vegas has made many gangsters, gamblers, entertainers and cunning entrepreneurs incredibly powerful and rich. People like Ted Binion started out there and became men of power and high status in the particular gambling-driven middle of Las Vegas society. Then he was murdered. Las Vegas is not only dangerous for men, but it eats women alive. Numerous pretty young women from all over the country come to Las Vegas on planes, cars, greyhound, looking for fame and fortune. There're more likely to end up strippers, nude models, around the clock prostitutes, or sticking needles into their arms than they are to land a job as a lounge singer or casino showgirl. Sometimes I hear people say that it is easier to get a Sin City hooker to make a house call than it is to get a doctor.

It may be true that Las Vegas can't match the colorful brightness of New Orleans or San Francisco, and isn't a world film center like Los Angeles, or a financial and media pub like New York. There is no place else in America that can match its appeal for gamblers and big time show business. This is the site where the Spanish explorers claimed for their country and named Las Vegas

The black robe

If you order your custom term paper from our custom writing service you will receive a perfectly written assignment on the black robe. The Black Robe deals with the clash of cultures in a way that raises many questions in the viewers mind. The basic differences of each culture in terms of language, norms, beliefs and values, led to many misunderstandings and tragedies.

The basic premise of the movie, which is the foundation for both the action and ideas presented, is the Jesuits mission to convert the Native American Indians to Catholicism. The Jesuits believed that any baptized "savage" would automatically go to heaven upon death. For instance, in the movie the French mayor in New France introduced Black Robe and his aide as "Soldiers of Paradise", "they are here to show you the true way of God". In one of the other scenes in France, a Senior Priest says to his altar boy that the Jesuits "must convert the savages (just as they did in England and Germany)". "What more glorious a task than to convert the savages- to civilize them", so they can enter heaven.

The Algonquians, however, have their own set of beliefs, which the Jesuits find impossible to credit. For instance, the Jesuits believe in "Paradise" as "Happiness and peace, alone with God", whereas the Algonquin fail to believe there could be happiness without women, tobacco and hunting. Their idea of the "Afterworld" is "a forest where the dead see at night, and the souls of men hunt the souls of animals".

Given the basic fundamentals in their belief systems, it's no surprise that language should prove to be a problem and that misunderstandings occur in translations. For example, the Algonquians think that the mantle-clock is the leader of the New French village. When it says "Dong! Dong! Dong!" it is giving the mayor instructions (i.e.- it's "time for you to go").

At one point, Black Robe's young assistant asks, "Aren't the Algonquin 'true Christians'?" "They live for each other, and they forgive things we would never forgive". They share everything they have without question. Black Robe had a hard time understanding this as his European values stressed personal wealth and trading. For example, when Black Robe wouldn't give his tobacco to the Algonquians for reward, it was because he was going to trade it with the Huron. He believed that the Indians behave like children, with no thought for the future, and that "the devil prevents them from hearing the truth".

As with language and values, the differences in beliefs also cause tension between the Algonquin and Jesuits. Many times near the beginning of the film, Black Robe and his aide asks an Algonquin for his or her name, and they refuse to answer, claiming, "Names are sacred". Another belief the Algonquians have is related to their dreams. While the Jesuits look upon dreams as silly and meaningless, the Algonquians feel that dreams "are real, and must be obeyed". An example of this is near the end of the film, when Black Robe is told he must visit the Huron Mission alone, for it was like that in the Chief's dream. The most significant difference between the two groups' beliefs is processing of the dead. This difference creates a turning point near the middle of the film. An old Algonquin woman puts her dead baby in a tree, so it can be closer to its "Afterworld". Black Robe sees this and decides to bless the child, but this offends and angers the Algonquians, as they feel Black Robe is "stealing the child's spirit" spirit". It is after this event that Black Robe is deserted by the Algonquians and left to die.

After Black Robe is reunited with a few of the Algonquians, we are introduced to the Iroquois. They kill the Algonquian party without provocation. They take the survivors back to their camp, in preparation to sacrifice them to their own God, Arskui. They show no mercy for their captives. They treat the Jesuits and Algonquians with equal savagery. These incidents beg the question, "Does any one group have a right to impose their values on another?", which of course has been the premise of the movie all along. "The Jesuits believe the Indians are savages," and seek to change them. Whereas "the Algonquians believe the Jesuits are fools" but they don't wish to change them. For example, right before the Algonquian Chief dies, Black Robe tells the Chief that if he allows Black Robe to baptize him, he will go to "Paradise". The Chief answers by asking, "Why would I want to go to 'Paradise'? Are any of my people there? There are only black robes there".

As chilling as the treatment of the Algonquin party by the Iroquois is, it is nothing compared to the bleakness of the fate of the Huron. Near the end of the film, we see two Huron discussing the possibility of conversion. The Chief says, "Black Robe wants us to forget our dream. Have only one wife. Not to kill our enemies. But if we do that- we will cease to be Huron. Our enemies will sense weakness and wipe us off the face of the earth". A grim prophesy, which is proved true at the conclusion of the film. The Huron do convert to Catholicism, and fifteen years later, their enemies, the Iroquois, wipe them out.

The five main characters from the play Stolen are all suffered the Government decision to remove Aboriginal children from their families. They were denied power over their lives in many ways. They are taken away from their biological mother, denied contact with their families and forced to absorb the white Australian culture by being brought up by white parents instead of their indigenous parents, for better education and for a better lives. In this way the play shows how Aboriginal people have been deprived from choices and resources necessary to direct their lives. Furthermore, Jimmy, Ruby, Shirley, Sandy and Anne are the victim of the Government decision and the victim of the society. Their traumatic experiences are at different levels, some of the characters are unable to over come the horrific abused and experiences they've endured which lead them to close themselves off from the rest of the world. Other like Anne, Shirley and Sandy managed to break through the concrete wall of powerlessness and are able to move on and made the most of their slender chances to better direct their lives.

Stolen shows Aboriginal people to be determining in hoping for a better future, although they continually encounter new obstacles as they attempt to re-direct their lives. Shirley is the personification of the loss of contact with her parents a well as her own children. Shirley and her parents had no control over their lives. Shirley who'd tired to locate her children but was put 'on hold'. This symbolises the powerlessness of Aboriginal people against the white authority. Their lives were controlled and deferred by the White Authority. When Jimmy discover about his mother, that she's still alive, he regains a sense of hope which open the possibilities of positive changes to his live. As he waited for the meeting with his mother her 'stands happily', recalling his cheeky, carefree childhood personality, which indicates hope and a bright future for Jimmy. However, his mother's death defers all his happiness forever, his anger and despair takes over, leading to be locked up behind bar and having less power than ever to direct his life.

Lives cannot be better when you are institute and then abused. Jimmy and Ruby are abused when they were taken away for a weekend visits. They were sexually and physically abused. These traumatizing experiences lead them to shut themselves from the outside world and choose not to speak. Their silences after these experiences suggest that they have little choice but to follow guidelines, 'Promise not to tell.' Ruby's agonizing abuse and traumatizing experiences graphically showed through her decent into madness, unable to respond when her family finally found her. Like wise Jimmy's questions about his mother are answered only with a forceful 'your mother's not coming. She's dead'. These constant lies and abuses reinforce the children's lack of power to alter their situation and destroy their lives. .

Stolen shows lives not always better by separating children from their families. As in the case of Anne it leads her to a stage of confusion, as whether she's back or white. Anne's crisis of identity is difficult for her to deal with because she hasn't been told the truth of her aboriginal background. This demonstrates that Anne has very little say as whether she wants to be accepted by white society or back society, but Anne managed to love and made both parents accept her for who she is. Anne's slender chance to better direct her lives are stabilize with the opportunity given to her by both society, which gave her the power to change her placing in the society. However, the Aboriginal people aren't given that chance to change their places in society. This can be seen in the scene of 'Cleaning Routine ' where it shows the children's understanding of social ranking and where they are to be located.

Cheap University Papers on First they killed my Father by Loung Ung, Stolen by Jane Harrison and Divine Wind

Shirley, Jimmy, Ruby and Anne are all confronted the issue of loss of identity, by being stolen from their families. This made them lose the ability to direct their lives. This 'Powerlessness' led Ruby and Jimmy to their tragic ends. Where as Shirley and Anne are able to overcome their obstacles and struggles to better direct their lives. Overall, Stolen shows that Aboriginal people were principally disadvantaged as they were mostly unable to focus their lives according to how they want it to be.

All the members of an intermediate family live together. The grandparents are considered to be the intelligent people in the family. They do not work. They stay home and live off of everyone else in the family. Both of the parents work. Kids over the age of 13, work after school. The father runs the household.

There are usually eight people in one house at a time. There are two sets of grandparents, one father, one mother, and two children. Sometimes there are more or less children in the family.

At the age of 16 the child is allowed to move out of the house to find a life of his/her own. If they move out, they are on their own. They can get some help in the beginning with money issues and payments of their own, but once they get settled they are on their own from there on out.

When there are disagreements between the parents, the kids are sent to their aunts and uncles for the period of time that it takes the parents to settle the disagreement. The parents stay together and try to work the problem out.

If the disagreement cannot be settled then the parent's divorce and the children live with their aunts and uncles. The grandparents stay with the there son or daughter. The children get to visit their parents often.

Peace or War

Our society has been back and forth between peace and war amongst our people over the last few decades.

People fight about not getting the honesty from others. Also people are very secure of there belongings. If someone were to try and steal from them they would retaliate by fighting the guy instead of talking to them about it.

One of the reasons that people are at odds is because of the fluctuating of the stock market. If the market has a bad day the country has a bad day, if it has a good day everyone is happy.

People also fight about football games. Some how people find one little thing to say that the opposing team cheated or played unfairly. The other fan will say that your team cheated and play unfair, and then they are fighting about it. Everyone gets in on the fight. These kinds of fights only happen when everyone is in a bad mood because the country is fighting some other nation.

On the plus side we are not at war right at this moment. We just got finished with a nuclear war over seas. It lasted a full two days. It was one of the longest wars in modern history.

Health

People are very healthy nowadays. There are some reasons for this.

One is, the people are so competitive with each other that they just want to be in better shape than the other person. Another reason is that there are so many cures for cancer, aids and other diseases that would have killed someone 50 years ago. Some of these cures are the Brochiliad plant. This plant cures some forms of cancer. The Snuffler fish is also another cure for a bad disease. These and more cures are explained in other life forms.

Some people don't care if they are overweight. There are only a few people that think like this nowadays.

Not many people get sick anymore. There have been so many advances in modern medicine and with many substances being banned from use. Smoking, and puffing and drinking have been banned.

Leisure

For relaxation people play sports, watch sports or go to the museums of art.

Painting and drawing are ways people express themselves. The people who go to the museums are the kind of people who don't like to play or watch sports.

Almost all people play sports. This is the most popular thing to do when venting expressions. The favorite sports to play are football and basketball. These are also the sports people love to watch. Football is a much nastier game players are still in your face. The referees have let some of the flags slide. It is definitely the way to get your anger out. To play basketball you have to be very skilled. Unlike football where all you have to do is remember plays with all the positions except the quarterback position which has to play smart. On the basketball court everyone has to play smart, make shots, defend people taller and stronger than they are. You need to be able to score in a fast pace game.

People also watch football. Football at the pro level of play, seasons are all year long. A season starts in august and ends in May. May 5 is the day of the year in entertainment. This day the Super Bowl of the world is played.

Government

Our government has stayed like it has for over 50 years. The republicans and democrats have traded off presidents in the white house.

There have been new laws added by our government. Some are all smoking is illegal. Drinking is illegal. There are stricter with murder. If you murder someone you get the death penalty. No questions asked. If you are found guilty this is what's going to happen to you.

Our government is the most feared amongst the other countries. The government treats their people with the utmost respect. But when it comes to dealing with other countries, no one wants to bother the United States.

They have passed laws to keep our air from getting polluted. If we travel on the roads, we are only allowed to drive pollution free cars.

Katherine Mansfield's short stories Miss Brill and The Dolls house are extremely good examples of how a writer can use symbolism to bring about an understanding of character, setting and themes, whilst communicating all these ideas in a concise short story. Miss Brill demonstrates how symbolism is used to portray a character's feelings, and the reactions of that character to a series of events expressed through an omniscient third person narrator that delves into Miss Brill's innermost thoughts. Symbolism is essential in expressing the author's feelings and ideas about condescending attitudes and snobbish disapproving behaviour.

There are a number of symbols in the story which emphasize the Miss Brill's innocence, and the effect that the writer uses it to. One is the fur collar. The kind of "fur" Mansfield meant is indicated by "Little rogue biting its tail just by her left ear." In reality it was probably just the skin of a fox. But a symbol was implied in this. As a dog or fox runs around in circles, in the "futile" attempt to bite its tail; Miss Brill felt her life to be full until she encountered the two young people on the park bench and heard what she looked like to them; then she comes to a realisation of her own life's futility. This use of symbolism is an effect the writer wants to achieve, in that it distinguishes the story with the depressing ideas of an old lady's crushing realisation of her pointless life, in a short and sharp image.

Another symbol which plays an important part in Miss Brill's characterisation is that of performing in an act. The band is playing better now than in the "off-season" because then "…it was like someone playing with only the family to listen". Miss Brill enjoys the fantasy that she is actually on the stage, the whole park is a stage, and that everyone has a part. This builds her character, as the narrator explores her thoughts of the surrounding harmony and perfection with herself at the centre a central part in the performance. It also reinforces who she is, for instance, that she was a talented actor in her prime.

In The Doll's House symbolism is vital in the brief portrayal of a society, a society that could be said to show the actual discrimination that goes on in real life. The discrimination and snobbish behaviour that is so often evident in human nature. One of the strongest symbols used in the story is the little lamp. Whilst the older children take an interest in the red carpet of the doll's house notably not in the kitchen. Kezia, the youngest of the girls, takes an interest in the rather single lamp. In fact, "what she liked more than anything, what she liked frightfully, was the lamp." This infatuation symbolises her approach to acceptance in comparison to the others as she is drawn to the unadorned lamp, she is not fazed by superficial values but sees simplicity. This foreshadows the events follow in the rest of the story. Her acceptance of the Kelveys reinforces the ideas represented by the symbol of the little lamp. Cheap custom writing service can write essays on "Symbols are essential to the short story writer because they convey so much in so short a space." Discuss with reference to two short stories studied.

Symbolism can be a valuable tool for a short story writer. Its use, more often than not, is the effect it creates ideas, feelings. The aim of a short story writer is not exactly to convey as much as possible in a short space, but to make efficient use of that space, quality not quantity. To leave an impression on the reader. The short stories Miss Brill and The Doll's House both have prevalent impressions that are conveyed (futility of elderly lives and social discrimination respectively) and both make proficient use of symbolism and allegory, such as the fur collar and the little lamp.

"Symbols are a valuable tool to the short story writer because they create effect in a concise manner."

Southwest Airlines Inc.

Rollin King, a San Antonio, Texas entrepreneur, and Herb Kelleher, an attorney, founded Southwest Airlines in 167. Their goal was to copy the low-cost / low fare business model that proved successful for Pacific Southwest Airlines based in California. Herb Keller filed papers to incorporate the airline and an application with the Texas Aeronautics Commission (TAC) to begin service between Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. The TAC unanimously approved the application but Southwest's competitors obtained a temporary injunction preventing Southwest from flying. After many legal battles with its competitors Southwest was given the green light to start flying. Southwest began service on June 18, 171; a day that began an unprecedented history for an airline that survived tough legal battles and through its leadership implemented innovative cost reduction strategies and is currently enjoying industry leading profits and overall success.

Legal Battles

Before Southwest flew its inaugural flight it was embroiled in legal battles with it competitors Braniff, Continental and Trans Texas. At trial in 168, the competitors argued that Southwest was entering saturated markets that had no more traffic to support another airline. Herb Kelleher represented Southwest and countered with witnesses that claimed the markets were growing and passenger traffic would increase with Southwest's planned low-fares. The district court ruled that the cities Southwest proposed to serve could not support another airline.

Herb Kelleher could not sit and watch the competition harass Southwest out of the airline industry; he continued the fight with appeals to higher courts. After a state court upheld the lower court's decision, the Texas Supreme Court stepped in and unanimously overruled both lower courts. The legal battles continued because Braniff, Continental and Trans Texas appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. The highest court in the nation handed a victory to Southwest by refusing to hear the appeal. Braniff and Texas International refused to stop fighting and after few other legal battles the Texas Supreme Court finally cleared Southwest for takeoff.

Leadership

Fighting through the tough legal battles, Herb Kelleher sharpened his sword and provided the leadership necessary to move Southwest forward. Southwest asked Kelleher to assume the duties of Chairman of the Board in 178 and later became the President and CEO in 181. Leadership is much more than managing business operations it involves selling passion and vision that impact employees and customers, Kelleher did it extremely well. His style was not to manage too much from his office because he preferred to be out in the field in order to gauge the satisfaction of employees and costumers. Employees are the most important part of business in Kelleher eyes and he made it a major goal for all executives and supervisors to be open, honest, accessible and encouraging. Herb Kelleher contended that customer satisfaction is dependent on employee satisfaction; Southwest never in its history had to lay off any employee.

Cost Reduction Strategies

Due to its low-fare business model Southwest must maintain low operating expenses in order to earn a profit. Southwest's cost reduction strategies have proved successful because they range from flight schedules efficiencies to reduced commissions and streamlined maintenance. Its own employees have initiated many of the strategies because they realize the core values of Southwest and can easily express concerns and new ideas to supervisors and executives. According to its annual reports, Southwest has the lowest operating expense in the airline industry at $7.7 (000) per average seat mile.

A few of Southwest's cost reduction strategies

• Point-to-point flight scheduling system steers clear of congested airports and is more cost-efficient than typical hub-spoke systems used by other airlines.

• Fleet of only Boeing 77s makes it easier to maintain the airplanes and reduces spare parts inventories

• Online ticket purchasing system prompted the reduction of travel agent commissions to 5 percent

• Meals are not served on flights passengers are offered beverages, peanuts and raisins

Success

Cost reduction strategies have helped further Southwest's business model but there are other factors that have contributed to its success. It begins with the survivor mentality instituted from its beginning with the frivolous lawsuits brought by its now defunct competitors. The legal battles solidified Southwest's beliefs in the low-cost / low fare business model. They created a new airline customer that wants no frills, low fares and excellent customers service. Herb Kelleher lead a company that values it employees, which in turn values its customers. Southwest's major success is quantified by its numerous awards in employee and customer satisfaction and 0 years straight of profitability and increasing market share.

Henry v

The way Shakespeare wrote his plays were constructed on what was happening at the time. When he was doing the play Henry v queen Elizabeth the 1rst was on the throne (1558-160). Like Henry she was a strong and powerful leader an excellent ruler of England but she spent a lot of time at war with the French and the Spanish . Shakespeare then decided he needed a great monorch who was well respected that's how he came to choose Henry v.

Shakespeares version of Henry v was so influenced on the audience which made them wish they could of fort for Henry in the great battle of Agincourt. Shakespeare describes Henry v as the mirror of all kings(act line 6) shown in the chorus , throughout the play the Chorus acts like an narrator to help us almost paint a picture in are minds of what a type of leader Henry really is. The play clearly describes Henry been a very religious person like before battles he would stand up infront of his men and say a prayer to God and tell his men that God is with them and make his men feel like there playing a big part for there country .

Henry is displayed by Shakespeare as a model King and military leader, and in comparison the English are portrayed as the better side as opposed to the less than adequate French side. Shakespeare was obviously somewhat biased when it came to his own country. Although Henry's duties as a King seem flawless we question his character at certain points of the play when his friends become complications in his duties. He shows no favouritism towards Bardolph, who is caught stealing from a church. Henry had given orders for no looting and lets the execution proceed. Also, when Falstaff falls ill, the hostess certainly believes that Henry has acted in an unfeeling way to Falstaff "the king has killed his heart" This could be considered cold hearted or it could be argued he is fair and firm.

Write my Essay on henry 5 for me

Earlier on in the play Henry is betrayed by of his most noble knights Cambridge , Scroop and Grey we are no tyrant but a christian king…..-again referring to God illustrates the betrail (p.15l.41)

whenever he calls upon him. He also passes his glory on to God after winning the battle for when Montjoy tells him the day is his, Henry replies "Praised be God, and not our strength, for it". This also shows how Henry feels God is always there for him, and he truly and sincerely depends on him. In these religious times, the fact that the King was a strong believer of God was good, for it influenced and helped his people's faith. But Henry is only serious; he also has fun side, which consists of his humour and his wits.

These display his mental sharpness. At the beginning of the play Henry replies to insult with wit and intelligence. He replies to the Dauphins insolence by turning his sarcasm into a metaphorical speech.

The assult on the town of Harflur ends in glory after a speech spoken in words powrful enough for his men to gain morale and fight for Henry and their country. Henry is effective in his speeches, he uses sound and vivid images such as set the teeth and stretch the nostrils wide... which adds strong feeling to his speech. He gives merit to his men in his speechs on , on you noblest English in patriotic language. He compares his men to (greyhounds).

Henry delivers the rousing St Crispian's Day speech before the battle of Agincourt and fires them all with enthusiasm (Act four, Scene three)

Henry gives an impression to the audience that he is loyal king to his people and country his talks before his battles are so meening ful his prayer b4 the battle of agincourt (act 4 scene1 , line 87)o God of battles steal my soldiers hearts. Posses them not with fear . Take from them now and as I mentioned earlier on immediately after the battle he would go straight to god and thank him . Shakespeare gives the audience the impression that Henry believed that his victories were in God hands.

As well been a strong powerful ruler he is a good influence to all his men (act4,scene line 1) whats he that wishes so?. He respects his men and calls them his brothers and will make them feel proud when the years to come of old age showing people that they were there on Saint Crispins day by showing there wounds and scars. When Henry said (act4,scene line 60) we few , we happy few, we band of brothers-for he today that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother; be he neer so vile This day shall gentle his condition-And gentlemen in England, now abed. In away the audience could tell that he was under pressure but not at one moment did he show this to his men he makes his men feel confident and willing to fight not to be scared and worried. At the battle Henry very bravely was the only one wearing he kings armour he didn't have any decoys. (people who would wear the same armour as the king but not actually the king to attract the target to the enemy)

I personally like Henry v because of his attitude towards things like with a good friend Bardolph he is a man for his word. I also admire how he is king and doesnt see himself more important than his men he considers himself just the same (soldier, warrior) when he uses the famous phrase BAND OF BROTHERS

Edgar Allen Poe lived from 180 to 184; a family in Richmond adopted him at the age of two after his father abandoned him and his mother's untimely death. Poe had two major addictions that would eventually lead to his downfall; drinking and gambling. Around the year 187 he left Richmond and headed to Boston where he would do most of his writing and join the Army on a two-year term. He married his cousin in 186. All through the next ten years, his wifes extended illness blemished his outlook on life. Poe had been employed as an editor for periodicals in Philadelphia and in New York City. His wife Virginia died in 1847 and afterward Poe became ill. A few years before his wife's death, while struggling with her illness, Poe wrote "The Raven".

In January of 1845 his most famous poem, The Raven was published in New York, where it would turn out to be an astounding hit. Poe was a man fascinated by the thought of death and loved to write about it and it was his fascination and creativity that drew his readers.

Edgar Allen Poe's the "Raven" starts with the narrator sitting one night alone and pondering his past when he hears what he thinks is a visitor. Whilst hearing this "tapping", he immediately thinks of his radiant maiden Lenore that the angels took away and silently hoped it was she. He was excited with the horrifying thought that this may be likely. So to bring himself back to reality, he thought maybe it was just a late visitor at his door. When he opened the door all he saw was darkness as he stood staring and wondering what this noise could have been. At first, I think he is just psyching himself out as many of us do alone on dark filled nights when we hear noises.

Again he thinks of the ghost Lenore when he says, Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before, he whispered his lost loves name Lenore. Back outside he heard the "tapping" again, this time at his window so he went over and when he opened it, in stepped an ebony raven and stared at the narrator. He asked his name and the raven answered Nevermore. I think this is where he starts to loose his sense of reality, although the raven simply said Nevermore the narrator saw a glimpse of meaning behind its visit.

He told himself that in the morning this creature of night would be gone as other visitors had before, then the raven answered, Nevermore. The narrator continued to convince himself of his sanity, by saying that this bird possibly escaped from a master who taught him this one word. He then moved his chair and placed it in front of the raven and thought maybe the raven was sent by God to reunite him with his lost Lenore.

And the raven told him Nevermore. He is now convinced that the raven was sent by wickedness and wishes him to return to where he came from, which is the Nights Plutonian Shore and to leave him alone. Hence the raven answered Nevermore.

The raven sat there staring with these eyes that have all the seeming of a demon that is dreaming. Then a lamplight pushes the shadow of this demon bird on the floor and traps the soul of the narrator underneath it forever. He at this moment knows of his doomed fate and his eternal existence. He was alone forever and there was to be no more Lenore.

My analysis of Poes poem brings me to think that the narrator could never get over the death of his lost love. He was so obsessed with her loss that he finally drove himself insane. I think that the raven symbolizes the night he realized his illness and that his lost love would never return. I think this person was most likely abusive to Lenore, maybe even killed her, a good reason for him to be consumed with guilt. This would also explain why the angels took her, yet he would never be reunited with her ever again. He knew by the look in the raven's eyes, no angels would be coming for him. There are many ways to interpret this poem and I think depending on your mindset when you read it, your interpretation will fluctuate. This is one of the many flattering qualities of poetry.

I chose this literature work for the reason that, it is a poem I have read since my first English or Literature class. Edgar Allen Poe was a talented writer with a demented sense of reality. He brings you into his work and leaves you questioning your own reality. Poe creates dark places that, luckily, most of us don't get a chance to visit. Poe also uses symbolism as a way to draw a reader into his work. For instance, in this poem the raven symbolizes torment or anguish, the word "nevermore" which is used throughout the poem, symbolizes the end of nothing. He will be alone and sad and miserable for the rest of his existence.

"The Raven" is a quizzical poem that confuses its reader that is unaware of the poet's background. Some poems, maybe even most poems can be read without understanding pertinent about its author, but "The Raven" seems to come together for the reader after knowing a little bit about Poe and his disturbed life and what he was going through while writing this specific poem. I am drawn to Edgar Allen Poe's ability to say one thing and represent something totally different.
