Mike was to lay over on the left side of the field just about fifty feet in front of the last know spot where the shooter was seen.

Mike was to wait till Dan shot up the spot where the shooter was suspected to be, and then there was movement I was to lay on some heavy fire from my side. Dan got into position and so did Mike, they where waiting for about four minutes then Dan saw some movement and started to shot in the general direction, Mike saw the shadow-dark move back a bit and Mike Shot the masked-shadow times before he was lead of the field. When Dan and Mike went back to the staging area the guy mike shot was waiting there to congratulated them too for shooting him out. Double Consciousness

Have you ever been misjudged, or misread, or been called something that you were not? Or have you been seen as something different through somebody else's eyes. They have developed an identity for you. This may, or may not be true, but on the inside, you know what your true identity is. Writers often write a story that they can personally relate to or represent it through the eyes and mouth of another. Sometimes writers, however, have been seen through the eyes of others to send a message completely different from what the writer wants to convey. The idea that is in their head may be different from what the reader reads, or they just represent something that they are not. This is the theory of double consciousness, the idea of being something else in someone's eyes than what they feel inside. Many writers from the past through today write about double consciousness but the way in which it is portrayed is very different for each writer.

Du Bois developed the idea of "double consciousness," "the sense of always looking at one's self through the eyes of others, of measuring one's soul by the tape of a world that looks on in amused contempt and pity"(Du Bois 11). It is the idea of being two things. Two people, two minds, two souls. It is like the concept of being and not being; being something literal and being something figurative. He sees it as being the real physical person and then being the person, the visual mental object in other's minds that they interpret or judge him as. He could never be seen as one. One could never be whole. He could be two things in one body; that is, he is what he is in his own body, and he is what others view him as in that same body. Because of that feeling of separation between the two, he could never feel himself or feel whole.

Du Bois appears to want to be able to overcome double consciousness. He wants people to see through that mental image that they have and see through to the real self. "He simply wishes to make it possible for a man to be both a Negro and an American, without being cursed and spit upon by his fellows, without having the doors of Opportunity closed roughly in his face"(Du Bois 11). He knows his true self. He knows the reality of who he is. He wants people to see what he sees. He wants these two people to become the same person and be perceived as the same person. At the time of Du Bois, he was seen as two people. One was the misinterpreted, misunderstood, misjudged, black, "Negro," seen by the white man. The other was the one that he saw as well as all the other black men saw. This was the hard working, caring, loving, genuine, real "African American." This is what he sees when he looks in the mirror. This is what he feels in side. This is what his pride consists of. Other writers appear to hide or suppress their pride.

Nicolas Guillen has a different form of double consciousness. His is more or less unspoken. He has more than just double consciousness, he has multi consciousness. He has many different identities that he calls himself by. These identities are not necessarily what other people see him as. They are what he believes himself to be. This is where his multi consciousness comes from.

"I'm Yoruba, I'm Lucumi,

Mandingo, Congo, Carabali." (Guillen 17).

He has all of these different identities yet he claims to own only one of those identities. He starts with an original name, like any given name that you or I would be named at birth.

He is claiming an identity here. This is his real self, the one that is inside. Then later in the poem he claims that he is "Lucumi, Mandingo, Congo," and "Carabali." Like Du Bois, he has several identities. He is given all of these different words and/or names, multi identities for an unclear reason. His writing is quite different from Du Bois however.

Unlike Du Bois, Guillen gives himself these identities. He develops these multi consciousnesses. Du Bois states that his idea of double consciousness is appointed for him. Others strap names and judgments while Guillen gives the names to himself. He has this fixation with having different identities and being several people at once.

Double consciousness is also depicted in Corregidora. Ursa's double consciousness is a little different from the rest of the writers. Ursa kind of lives two lives. One is in the eye of the public. All of the town's people know who she is and what she does. She gets around with the men quite a bit. She knows that this is her lifestyle and she also knows that the public knows that this is her lifestyle. She knows that she can look through their eyes and see what they see. Ursa also lives her private life. She has her true feelings about her life. She knows on the inside that what she does is not really self satisfying.

Ursa is very easy with the men. She sleeps with a lot of them because she believes that that is what she has to do. She was sexually abused when she was younger and thus has kind of adopted this submissive lifestyle. Many of the men that she gets with are aggressive, controlling and even abusive. They are very vulgar to her as well.

The double consciousness theory shows up many times. The town sees her as a whore, or promiscuous or just plain being easy. Inside though, she isn't happy with what she does. She doesn't like doing these things with all of the men, though she doesn't let them know that.

"Does it feel good?"

"No."

"Really, Urs? Really no good?"

"Yes. I mean, I'm lying. Yes." (Jones 76).

Even though Ursa does not like it, she tells the men what they want to hear. Double consciousness is thus formed. They see something completely different about Ursa than what she really feels inside. The men believe that she is enjoying it. They think that she loves it and that she loves having sex with them. She knows what they see, hear and believe. Inside, however, Ursa doesn't feel the same way about herself as the men do. She doesn't want the sessions to continue. She gets no satisfaction from them and has a total opposite, contradicting viewpoint from what these men have.

Another writer that exhibits double consciousness is Langston Hughes. In his poem "Wait," it is shown really well. He views himself as a writer, but also feels that he represents everyone that is on the side columns of his poem. They are labels for many of the oppressed in the world. Yet, in the actual poem, he is speaking for himself.

"I am the Silent One,

Saying nothing"…

"I shall raise my hand

And smash the spines of you

Who shoot me."…(Hughes 47).

One would not necessarily know that he is speaking for the oppressed, such labels as; "Pickers, Negroes, Communists, Japanese, Black, Child, Labor, Strikers." This is where double consciousness can then be applied. More than just his identity is given to him. He has a feeling for both sides; what he truly is inside, and whom he represents on the outside. He seems himself through the eyes of others. He knows how they feel about him and his writing. This may be a consequence of his writing or this may be the reason for which he writes.

Many writers and narrators exhibit double consciousness when they write. Some know they do it but can do nothing about it. Some know it exists and want to change it. Some experience but do not want to change it. Some don't even know that they are actually showing double consciousness in their writings. Whatever it is, a message is conveyed in a manner in which the narrator or the author wanted it to. Whether they wanted the double consciousness theory to arise is not always up to them. It often shows up in the interpretation of the text. This is how meanings are derived from texts, and how we read deeper into the meaning-interpretation. We, the readers are at the other end of the double consciousness. We are the ones that complete the circuit. We provide the narrators and writers the eyes in which they seem themselves. Watching one's self through the eyes of others can show a person a whole knew side to themselves. One can learn a lot by looking at themselves through the eyes of another.

In Hayden Carruth's "In the Long Hall" the poet presents a struggling and weak human, undergoing changes, then getting to the point of stability for short moments. The Great Irish Famine of 1846 to 185 was a truly horrific human disaster.

Antilles), and Taino-Arawaks (in the Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica, Hispanola,

and Puerto Rico). The population of the Caribbean Islands was probably

not too much more than 1,500,000 of which about 1,000,000 lived mainly in

Hispanola. Hispanola was the center of Taino culture. Between 150 and

150, the demand for native labor increased and the native population

In October 14, Columbus's ships were bound for Japan, China, and

the Indies, but they arrived in the Bahamas. In May 14, Columbus

departed for his second voyage. The new goals were to settle

the land, cultivate the land, assert royal authority over the whole area,

convert the natives to Christianity, and mainly to search for gold and

send it back to Spain. There were 17 ships, and about 1500 men on this

voyage. Between 144 and 145, Columbus implemented a series of

regulations to control the natives and to gain lots of wealth. Each adult

must have delivered a certain amount of gold every three months, or else

they would be punished by the Spaniards. The natives didn't bring back

all of the gold that Columbus ordered, so he started enslaving and selling

the natives to generate some more wealth. In April 144, Columbus and his

brothers start to treat their own men harshly. This included hangings of

their own men. In the fall of 144, Columbus received total command of

all the people on the voyage. In March 14, the king and queen appoint

Francisco de Bobadilla governor and is sent to Hispanola with

instructions to Columbus and all Spaniards to submit to B!

obadilla's authority. In 1500, the king and queen ban enslavement in

Spanish colonies; natives are to be converted to Christianity, and

Christians are not to enslave fellow Christians. In the Indies, they

interpret this to mean that they can enslave natives who refuse to convert

to Christianity. In August 1500, Bobadilla arrives in the Indies, and

exerts his total authority. Columbus and his brothers do not submit to

his authority, so Bobadilla has him arrested and shackled, and sent back

to Spain. In about November 1500, Columbus is set free from prison, but

he has no more power in the Indies. In 1506, Columbus dies in Spain. A

man named Bartolame de las Casas is against the extermination of the

natives so he says "if necessary, white and black slaves can be brought"

to the Indies. So in 1518, African slaves begin to be shipped to the

Indies. In 1518 to 151, there was an outbreak of smallpox. One-third of

the remaining natives are killed as well as many of the Spa!

niards there. By 1518, more than 0 million (actually about 50 million)

enslaved Africans were brought to the Americas.

In 151, Cortes was the general of an expedition to the Indies.

In March, he landed in Cozumel with 11 ships, 580 armed Spaniards, 17

horses, crossbows, dozens of guns, and 10 cannons. Cortes and his men

fought their way up strong Mayan resistance up the coast. Whenever Cortes

came upon a temple, he smashed the idols, had the blood-stained walls

painted white, and installed a cross. In July 151, some of his men were

unsettled and were thinking of turning back, but Cortes sank all of his

remaining ships. In August 151, Cortes and his forces proceeded inland

with 500 men, 15 horses, and the cannons

destroying temples and putting in crosses continually. In November 151,

Cortes arrested Montezuma accusing him of ordering an attack on some of

his men. In June 150, Montezuma was stoned to death by his own men. In

July 150, Cortes and his forces flee Tenochtitlan for Tlascalan. At one

particular battle, the Battle of Otumba, the Spanish barely escape the

pursuing Aztecs. Only 400 Spaniards and 4 horses survive. All cannons

and gunpowder were lost in the battle. In the Valley of Mexico,

Tenochtitlan in particular, the people were stricken by an epidemic of

smallpox.

In the year of 151, there was a document written in Spain called

The Requirement. It was towards the Spanish conquistadors, but aimed for

the natives that they came in contact with. It was mainly written to help

convince the natives to convert to Christianity. It said that the

document must be read to any native culture that they came into contact

with. After it was read, the Indians had a choice to either convert to

Christianity, or not convert, and they had to put it into writing also.

The document said it was legal to start a war on the natives only if they

didn't convert to Christianity. According to a man named Bernardino de

Sahagun, he never saw Cortes read this document to the Aztecs in the year

151. Therefore, Cortes did not have the right to make war on the Aztecs

legally.

In December 150, Cortes gathered an army of allies, and from

January through May 151, he surrounded the city of Tenochtitlan, and

finally in July, Cortes began the attack. He totally destroyed the city.

They knocked down buildings, and burned anything that could be burned.

150,00 native allies joined in the final assaults. During the

Aztec-Spanish war, 40,000 Aztecs died, between 0,000-100,000 of the

native allies were killed. The figures do not include the people killed

by any kind of disease. As the defeated but alive Aztecs were herded out

of the city, the women and the boys were considered property of individual

Spaniards. The men were put to work building a new city on top of the

rubble of Tenochtitlan. The priests were executed, torn apart by dogs.

Bartolome de las Casas (1474-1566) was Spain's defender of

Amerindian rights. His parents were small merchants, but he abandoned his

studies for that and went to soldiering. He went to Hispanola in 150. He

received grants of land and Indian labor. In 1515 he renounced all

property and rights in the Americas and returned to Spain. He later went

on a voyage with Hernan Cortes, and he wrote down what kind of horrible

treatment Cortes gave to the natives there. The Spaniards did things

like, smash babies'

heads against walls, use some babies as food for their dogs, and once they

stuffed almost the whole population of a town into only three of the

houses. When all of the people were in the houses, they set fire to the

houses. The houses easily burned to the ground, and burned all of the

They are all of Middle-class status, and the average income is of $55,000 a year. All the members come from predominately white neighborhoods, and all the members are of Roman Catholic. Two of the school board members are currently executive board members of the South Lyon Athletic Department; two members are executive board members of the South Lyon High School Band Boosters Association. Two are former teachers of South Lyon Schools, and one is a real estate agent. They are all parents of student's in South Lyon's public school system.

One particular member has a student who is in the Special Education program so I will make a conscious effort to talk about how it is a benefit to students and how in order for students to be successful, it is imperative that this program is continued and to keep this program going, would not cost as much as one would think. I am going to stress the fact that while my age might be a reason for the school board to not believe what I'm saying, I have done extensive research on this subject and have spent a lot of time going over the possibilities and alternative methods for saving money due to the budget crisis. I want to be able to see people benefit from this program, not be harmed because it is cut from the school district.

In my earlier speech introduction, I gave my audience a personal story in which I enforced the belief that many times we can't physically determine the difference between a Special Education student and a Regular Education student, and why shouldn't we allow students to be mixed together in a classroom since it provided a learning environment and initiative to the students to equal their peers. For my new audience, I don't feel that it would be appropriate to being my speech this way. Throughout my extensive research, I have obtained MEAP results, testing results of inclusion students before and after they have been exposed to the regular classroom environment, personal testimony of the students involved in the program and the teachers as well. Also I have come across the school district's mission statement, which directly conflicts with the cutting of this program.

My main points of my speech will consist of the benefits of inclusion to the students, the point that this is not a costly program and helps by providing job opportunities, and lastly, how can we spend money on athletic equipment and cut an academic program? I will make it a point to focus on how this can affect the school board's children as well as other students involved in the program. Also, I will speak about how this proposal can affect their lives, as parents and citizens of the city should it be voted into power. My evidence comes from the Michigan Educational Funding Report (MEFR), interviews done with special education teachers and parents of Special Education students involved in the program.

In my former conclusion, I reinforced again how inclusion is a benefit and gives students the opportunity to compete against their classmates, to try to overcome the obstacles they are faced with. My conclusion this time, will be somewhat similar but will also comment on the importance of the school board funding academic programs as opposed to athletic programs. Also, I will reiterate the fact that the inclusion program does not cost nearly as much as the school board thinks, and that by cutting the program, the school districts looks to not gain anything, financially speaking.

For this new speech, I will be using a PowerPoint presentation in order to reinforce key ideas, along with including information that will be available for everyone to read and to see. I intend to dress in a business suit because I believe that this is a serious matter that needs to be taken seriously, and due to my age and my rank as a college student, I need to impress my audience in whatever way possible, in addition to my speech. This presentation isn't only the speech; it is how I conduct myself.

The difference between the vaguely remembered, barely venerated Garrison and the time-honored Jefferson lies in their true positions on slavery. Garrison was a staunch opponent of slavery who decried its practice for moral reasons. On the other hand, Jefferson was conflicted on the issue, and much of his personal writing suggests that he was more of an

"Deep rooted prejudices entertained by the whites; ten thousand recollections, by the blacks, of the injuries they have sustained; new provocations; the real distinctions which nature has made; and many other circumstances, will divide us into parties, and produce convulsions, which will probably never end but in the extermination of the one or the other race" (Mullin 01). In his twisted mind, this war was inevitable unless the African Americans were enslaved for eternity.

Secondly, Thomas Jefferson's idea of white supremacy was far more sophisticated than it seems at a first, cursory glance. Jefferson actually believed that the blacks were keeping themselves incarcerated. He felt that blacks did not perform well enough in the areas of common sense, responsibility, trustworthiness, and loyalty. He asserted that their overall inferiority, due to their "difference of coulour", kept them from being freed. "This unfortunate difference of colour, and perhaps of faculty, is a powerful obstacle to the emancipation of these people" (Ellis, 10). This concept, the notion that it was actually the blacks' own inadequacy that kept them enslaved, was perhaps, the most disgusting of all. This is the concept that does the most damage to Jefferson's legacy as a great, compassionate, and sensitive man. He can no longer be looked at with the same admiration. He mentioned this same fundamental concept in a journal entry once. In it he summarized his views at that particular point in time of his life. "To our reproach it must be said, that though for a century and a half we have had under our eyes the races of black and of red men, they have never yet been viewed by us as subjects of natural history" (Morgan 6)

Furthermore, he feared giving the slaves liberty because it was uncertain to him what they would do with it. He imagined that if the slaves were ever freed, that there could very well be a role reversal. He feared that eventually, being just and fair, would allow the blacks to enslave the whites. He assumed, that if given the chance, the blacks would take this opportunity. "Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just that his justice cannot sleep for ever that considering numbers, nature and natural means only, a revolution of the wheel of fortune, an exchange of situation is among possible events that it may become probable by supernatural interference!" (Ellis 10) His admission that "God is just" and will eventually give the African Americans the strength to break from their bondage, proves that he knew slavery was morally wrong. Since he believed God was always morally accurate, he believed that God would have been morally correct to free the blacks. Therefore, deep within himself, he believed and knew that slavery was morally inadequate. This conflicted state, characterized most of the political leaders of early America.

William Lloyd Garrison was possibly the most uncompromising, dedicated, passionate, fanatical, and devoted abolitionist during his time period. He hated slavery

from the time he was a young man, to his untimely death many years later. He made his life-long goals clear very early in his career. He was founder and chief editor of The Liberator, the first anti-slavery newspaper. In the very first issue of The Liberator, he made some of the most outlandish comments of his era. Essentially, William Lloyd Garrison pledged his unwavering devotion for the rest of his life to fighting the establishment of slavery. "I do not wish to think, or speak, or write with moderation…I am in earnest…I will not equivocate…I will not excuse…I will not retreat a single inch…and I will be heard" (Essig 7).

From then on, he was known around the country as a staunch opponent of slavery who was willing to do anything to get his point across. "He publicly burned the copy of a constitution, which he viewed as a pro-slavery document" (Essig 8). To him slavery was a moral embarrassment to the United States of America. His heart ached for the hundreds of thousands of innocent people in captivity. His views became more radical over time, and once he even called for the North to secede from the slave-holding south. Eventually, people got tired of his radicalism and he lost a lot of his political influence. But before Good Charlotte became the punk rock sensations they are today the bands the founders and leaders, identical twins Joel and Benji had a tough childhood with their father leaving when they were sixteen and living in the lower-middle class in the suburbs of Waldorf, Maryland. In "To Build a fire", London's main character is new to the area, "He was a newcomer in the land, a chechaqou, and this was his first winter." You can relate to the character being a "newcomer" because most have been in the situation where they were placed or moved in to a new setting and the many circumstances that come along with being in a new environment. London further relates the reader to his character by portraying him as a common man. The author does this by setting his journey to what is possibly a work camp, "He would be in to camp by six o'clock; a bit after dark, it was true, but the boys would be there, a fire would be going, and a hot supper would be ready." Not only can you relate to the character being the average working man, you can relate to the feeling of being on a long trip, and the anticipation that you feel for finally arriving at your destination and the comforts that await. London furthers this portrayal of a common man though the character's habit, "Also, the man was chewing tobacco…" The character is not of wealth, nor is he a hero, but a common man that has many of the same hazardous addictions like tobacco that any real life person can have. Another technique to Realism is to reproduce some of the speech and mannerisms of ordinary people.

The third characteristic of Literary Realism is the reproduction of dialect and language of an ordinary person or of the stories setting. There are two specific uses of this in "To Build A Fire". One is in the description of the main character, "He was a newcomer in the land, a chechaqou" Chechaqou being a local word used to describe a newcomer to the Yukon area. The other is in the description of some of the local vegetation, "He held on through the level stretch of woods for several miles, crossed a flat of niggerheads," The word "niggerhead" is used to describe some of the tangled vegetation striking up through the snow and ice. Through the use of these local, everyday words, London is able to give the reader another relation to the story. With dialect that is used in everyday language, and not always found in a dictionary it helps to set the reader further in to the realistic setting of "To Build A Fire".

The fourth and final characteristic of Literary Realism is the use of realistic ethical dilemmas, which attempt to solve with out the help of coincidence and or probable intervention. By this I mean the problems are real, like the Hazards of nature, or anything else that can happen to anyone else in the real world. It is also dilemmas that do not coincide with improbable intervention or sometimes called "deux ex machina". That expression is defined as the employment of some unexpected and improbable incident in a story that makes things turn out all right. The main character falls short of his goal of reaching the camp in time and is forced to build a fire i.e. the title, and stops to accomplish this task

He had forgotten to build a fire and thaw out. He chuckled at his foolishness, and as he chuckled he noted the numbness creeping in to the exposed fingers… Then he got out matches and proceeded to make a fire.

In most movies or happy stories, the man would have been able to build a fire and avoid the cold of winter but here it is not the case, after building this first fire he succeeds in warming enough to carry on. However as he walks down the path above the frozen creek the worst happens, "And then it happened. At a place where there were no signs, where the soft unbroken snow seemed to advertise solidity beneath, the man broke through." His feet had fallen in to the frigid water and if he didn't build a fire soon he was going to be in serious trouble. As he build his next fire and finally gets it burning the reality comes in to play

But before he could cut the strings, it happened. It was his own fault or, rather his mistake. He should not have built the fire under the spruce tree. He should have built it in the open. But it had been easier to pull the twigs from the brush and drop them directly on the fire…. It grew like an avalanche, and it descended with out warning upon the man and the fire, and the fire was blotted out!

In a "deus ex machina" story every thing would have come out okay and by some intervention from God he would have been able to build the fire again and save himself from the bitter cold. However, in reality this is not the case, the cold got to him and in the end he dies.

Reality can be very harsh. In real life there is as much bad as there is Good, if not more bad than good. This is the essence of literary realism. The subject is not to present a "Leave it to Beaver" type ending, but rather what would more likely happen if you and I were to try to travel across the Alaskan Tundra during a blizzard… a inevitable demise. Perhaps the "new era" of reality TV is not a new thing at all. But is actually a resurgence of literature and literary realism, a resurrection in to a new form that is more modern but is still based on the same ideas that have been used long before MTV decided that it would be interesting to put normal people in situations and broadcast it to the rest of the world.

Barbara Kingsolver's The Poisonwood Bible follows the Price family after their decision to go to the Congo as missionaries. The story is told through the eyes of the mother, Orleanna, and her four daughters- Rachel, Leah, Adah, and Ruth May. Kingsolver uses this novel to illustrate the effects of colonialism. One of two living sisters who remained in Zaire after its independence, Leah Price underwent an incredible transformation from the daughter of a Georgia preacher to a mother of four. For this transformation, she had to eliminate her old way of thinking, so she could be open to new ways.

Before its independence, Zaire was known as the Congo. Belgium ruled the Congo, and America helped to promote a sense of dominion over it. Many white people from these two countries felt a responsibility to make the Congolese nation much like theirs and to make the Congolese citizens think the same way they did. Many missionaries took it upon themselves to educate the Congolese citizens about God and about the ways of the West. The flow of missionaries into the Congo slowed as political unrest began to unfold. A few missionaries, ignoring the warnings given to them, still went into the Congo in the hope of turning souls to God. Nathan Price fit this description. A war veteran and a Southern Baptist preacher, he gave himself the authority to take dominion over anything he wanted to, believing that the American government, as well as God, supported him. Nathan brought his family into the Congo in 15, not knowing that this would spark a change of events that would change his family forever.

Leah Price does not seem to have a deep, personal relationship with her mother. Orleanna Price is certain that Leah knows how to take care of herself. Leah is the stronger of a set of twins, and a tomboy on top of that. During an ant attack, saving Leah does not once cross Orleanna's mind. She recognizes Leah's strength, although this is not enough to bring them closer together. Despite the absence of intimacy in their relationship, Leah and her sisters combine forces with Orleanna to protect each other from Nathan and his temper. On more than one occasion, the girls have accepted punishment for things Orleanna has done, and vice versa.

Leah's relationship with her father differs greatly from the one she has with her mother. She adores Nathan, and does everything she can to be accepted in his eyes. This realization marks a huge turning point in Leah's life, where instead of admiration and awe, Leah's feelings turn into anger towards Nathan.

The years Leah spent in Kilanga changed her pre-conceived notions on race and race relations. Coming from Bethlehem, Georgia, she, like the other members of her family, at first believed all Africans to be heathen savages. Living in Kilanga exposed Leah to a new way of thinking and a new way of living. Villagers worked together, helping each other survive on a daily basis. Even when the Price family ran low on food, a neighbor gave them some of her hens and some of her eggs. Leah found the villagers to have an appreciation for nature she had never seen before. In a sense, they worshipped Mother Nature. They designated gods for different aspects of nature as a way to recognize the importance of nature in their lives. Leah came to think in the same way the villagers did, and eventually learned the native language. She shared their love of nature and their spirit of sharing, unity, and equality. She fell in love with Anatole, a black man who shared her views on equality and human rights. By this time, racial tension between White colonialists and Black citizens was higher than usual, due to the actions of the Belgian and American governments. Exasperated that people refused to look beyond her white skin, Leah longed to live in a world with no color. During the latter part of the novel, she became ridden with guilt over the color of her skin, and never was able to forgive herself for the color of her skin. In her mind, being White aligned her with Belgium and America, and with their actions. She becomes part of the problem, and never resolves the problem.

Skin color is not the only thing that Leah feels guilty about. Her whole life involves her dealing with different sources of guilt. Her twin sister, Adah, suffers from hemiplegia, a condition where one half of the brain shrivels slightly smaller than the other. In addition to this, Leah was breastfed through much of her infancy, whereas Adah was given milk formula. Leah therefore got all the nutrients that come from breast feeding and grew up a physically stirring girl. Adah spent much of her life deformed and did not speak very often. Leah blames herself for Adah's state of being and never quite forgives herself for this.

The issue of religion also served as a source of guilt for Leah. During the earlier part of her life, Leah behaved exactly how she thought her father would want her to behave. She absorbed everything he told her to absorb, including his idea of religion. Nathan Price taught Leah that there was only one God, He had one way of getting things done, and that everything happened for a greater good. The events she saw happening around her made her re-evaluate God and religion. She became angry at God, and abandoned religion for a little while. However, things turned sour. Anatole was arrested. Leah found that she needed somebody to turn to, so she turned to God. She turned to a much different God than the one she used to turn to.

"I found I… couldn't picture God at all. He just ended up looking like my father. I tried to imagine Jesus, then, in the body of Brother Fowles…Attend to creation, was his advice." (4)

The fundamental difference between Leah's God and Nathan's God is that Nathan's God is everywhere, watching and ready to reprimand. Leah's God, however, created everything and lives in everything he created; ready to come to the rescue whenever He is needed. When Leah gave up her father's way of thinking, she stopped believing in his God. Instead, she began looking around her at everything God created and realized how they all came together to provide the tools necessary to survive. This new outlook on religion gives Leah a new sense of peace, as she realizes that she has not been abandoned by God.

The time Leah Price spent in the Congo radically changed her. Everything she believed in was questioned and discarded for a new way of thinking that was able to better fit the new lifestyle she now lived. Kingsolver develops this complex character by following her from the naïve teenager she was to the mother of four, married to an African man and still living in Africa. In order to develop so much, Leah evaluated her relationship to her father and her views on religion. In addition to these two, her relationship to the women in her family helps shape the woman she becomes.

In front of my eyes is a mighty, powerful, awe-inspiring spectacle to behold. A rainstorm is brewing. It is like I am watching the mighty hand of God at work in the sky. I watch the massive trees dance back and forth effortlessly with the breeze while awesome bolts of bright light connect the heavens with the earth, illuminating the dark skies. Next, I wait in anticipation for the inevitable thunderclaps that are to follow. I lie back in my chair, close my eyes, and allow the rumbling energy to relax me with a gentle full-body massage. The sound of repetitive splashing of raindrops creates a pleasant atmosphere that frees my mind from the thoughts and worries of everyday concerns. As the cool, misty breeze sweeps over me, an exhilarating sensation rushes throughout my body and adds to this magical moment.

Negative

The skies are dark and gray. There is an ever-present gloomy feeling of melancholy in the middle of this brutal thunderstorm. The violent wind sends the helpless raindrops screaming horizontally through the air like millions of tiny needles in a full throttle assault. All life has seemingly ceased during this period, as no wildlife of any kind is willing to challenge this mighty force of nature. The constant noise of raindrops splattering sends my head twirling in chaos and ignites the voices in the back of my head that hurl me into a world of schizophrenic paranoia. Salting my wounds, I look to the sky only to be greeted by a blinding bolt of lightning followed by the loud inescapable roar of thunder that jolts me from my seat like a freight train coming my way. Regaining my senses I find my body sticky and wet from the salty mist that engulfs me in an overwhelming suffocation of mugginess. As the wind almost blows me over in my chair, I cannot help but inhale the salty rain that reminds me of the repugnant taste of gargling saltwater at the doctor's office, which in turn triggers my gag reflexes.

In both of my paragraphs I begin with an overt, direct statement of meaning so there is no doubt as to what my intentions are for the rest of the paragraph. In the positive description it is a mighty spectacle that inspires awe and should be respected for this. In the negative description it is a gloomy, dark, violent storm that should be feared. This same storm can be seen in both lights and from both points of view that differ so greatly without having a contradiction in fact.

To further bend the description to favor your bias you must select and omit certain details that do not help your case. I used this technique extensively.
