A combination of perspectives in the epic poem Beowulf and the modern novel Grendel allows the reader to contrast the point of view of both pieces and by doing so alters the perception of religion, good and bad, and Grendel. In 750 Beowulf was written and later translated by Judeo Christian monks who focused away from the "marauding monsters and menacing trolls" to predestination and God. Beowulf became a poem involving Pagan traditions, Christian values, and a battle between good and evil. Grendel is a modern novel written in 171 by John Gardner. It reveals Grendel's feelings, thoughts, and motives. The two stories provide the reader two different perspectives of Beowulf and Grendel.

In Beowulf, Grendel was seen as a "murderous ravager" and a "vanquished monster." He was feared by the Danes, and exhibits little emotion and no remorse for taking the lives of others. After the Thanes had spent a night of feasting and drinking they slept in the Wine-hall. While they are sleeping Grendel enters the hall and rejoices in seeing the ease of taking his victims. He acted quickly and "tore one into pieces, bit through the bones,/ gulped the blood, and gobbled the flesh,/ greedily gorged on the lifeless corpse,/ the hands and the feet." Beowulf watches him from the corner of his eye and attacks him. This description portrays Grendel as a heartless demon and a savage monster. In John Gardners book, Grendel is not portrayed as a viscous cold-blooded killer but a misguided individual, rich in feeling and thought. He is depicted as a gentle being when he picks up his mother by the armpits as he would a child. In Beowulf, the reader would never imagine Grendel treating anything as gently as he would a child. Grendel is depicted as a monster to establish a battle between good and evil and God and the devil. The story Grendel portrays him as an alienated individual, unaccepted by the world outside of his cave. He wishes to be a part of the feasts that the Danes hold and watches from a distance the laughter and joy that takes place there. The reader is provided insight to Grendel's thoughts. Upon the arrival of the Geats, Grendel is "mad with joy," and sees nature's beauty as he kisses the ice on the frozen creeks, pressing his ear to it, "honoring the water that rattles below." He admired the ship and its "white sails riding the swan-road, flying like a bird." This experience reveals that he has positive emotions and contrasts with his character portrayed in Beowulf, where he is seen as a stoic murderer. When Beowulf arrived he looked at him and admired his chest as wide as an oven and his beam like arms. Beowulf walks away and Grendel almost falls into a trance looking at his broad shoulders. Grendel, a savage monster and demon, reveals traits of admiration, jealousy, and fear. He knew that Beowulf was here to kill him, and he became less sure of himself than he pretended. When the struggle occurred later that night, Beowulf triumphed and killed Grendel by ripping his arm off. During the fight, he realized that he would not survive and he calls out for his mother, crying and bawling like a baby. His portrayal as emotional and helpless contrasts with the dispassionate personality described in Beowulf.

Beowulf is a man "with the strength of thirty men." He is portrayed as a hero and a man that everyone admires in Beowulf. He performs deeds that no other man could manage by killing Grendel, his mother, and the dragon. He is loved by the Danes and deserving of honor. In Grendel, Beowulf is a man with limited strength and certainly not held in admiration by everyone. The Danes are not happy to see him upon his arrival. In Beowulf, although they do not agree with the armor the men have brought with them, they eagerly accept him into their society. In contrast, the Danes in Grendel "were not pleased, to say the least, that the Geats had come to save them. Honor is very big with them; they'd rather be eaten alive than be bailed out by strangers." After Grendel sees Beowulf he goes back to his cave, and debates whether he should be afraid of him but decides "there is nothing frightening about the stranger" because he has "broken the backs of bulls no weaker than Beowulf is." Unfreth's challenge to a boast is also more dramatized and of greater importance in Grendel. The crowd and king laugh along with him as he makes fun of Beowulf for taking part in such a preposterous event as swimming in an ice-cold ocean for five days to win a bet. As night falls, the Danes fall asleep, full of mead, and Grendel comes to attack the warriors. In Beowulf, the struggle between the results in Beowulf ripping Grendel's arm off but inflicting no additional pain. In contrast, in Grendel, the heartless brute caused the misguided individual much suffering. The fight is described in great detail. As Grendel resisted Beowulf, he could "feel the bones go, ground from their sockets…he viciously twists his arm behind his back." Once Beowulf has Grendel into a position of disadvantage, he does not stop attacking him as the reader is led to believe in Beowulf. He continues to torment him by whispering threats into his ear and throwing him around the room, bashing his head into the walls and making him sing of them. Beowulf doesn't stop until Grendel is dead, and rejoices in the fact that he had become a killer. Beowulf is depicted as both a hero and a heartless man. The reason for this contrast is to show the variations in people's personality and the different ways that ways that one may perceive someone.

Contrasting the points of view in Beowulf and Grendel portrays Beowulf and Grendel differently. In Beowulf, Grendel is seen as a stoic, dispassionate murderer, and Beowulf is a hero, admired by all. In Grendel, Beowulf is portrayed as a heartless monster and Grendel as a misguided individual with emotions and feelings.

Diversity

The expanding conflict over cultural diversity in corporate America may present as many opportunities and problems as affirmative action. Today, cultural diversity is an important fact of life and business, due to the changing face of society, and therefore, the work place. It is growing ever more essential for people to interact with others outside of their racial, ethical, religious, regional and social boundaries. To stay on top of their competitors, especially in the 10s and going forward, corporations must change their approach, and see diversity not as a necessary evil or a mere threat, but as a source of enrichment and opportunity that may bring a wealth of benefits to the company.

In an examination of the U.S. workplace and specifically looking at management positions, it is clearly evident that minorities are under represented (Ronald Takaki, 00). The reasons behind this seem to vary depending on which point of view it is looked at. Some argue that minorities havent been in the labor pool long enough to work their way up" (David Thomas, 1). Others argue that minority employees dont know the rules that allow one to win in the corporate game (David Thomas, 1). While these reasons may hold some truth, it is also, as proven time after time in this countrys media, a matter of race and/or gender. There is an inherit distrust on the part of todays managers (typically white males who grew up with little exposure to people from other cultures) in the abilities of others outside of the white, male work-force David Thomas, 1). At the time many of todays leading CEOs were in school, they were taught that blacks had smaller brains than whites and that women were not as smart and were overly emotional. The attitudes and beliefs of these men have undoubtedly been influenced by such training. They have a deep seeded belief that women, African Americans, and in effect, all others than themselves are less competent, and they believe it to be true to a biological, molecular level (David Thomas, 1). At least this is true of the older generation, but what of the younger, civil rights, generation? It seems that the younger executives coming in now are worse theyre less tolerant, high on their big M.B.A. education. Their attitude is that the laws will take care of everything. They have little personal concern with doing whats right (David Thomas, 1). The training received by most of these managers has usually been based on the assumption that managing means managing a homogeneous white, male work force and not on managing any type of diversity whatsoever (David Thomas, 1).

With this in perspective, is it any wonder why minorities are leaving organizations to open their own business. Their corporate managers cant relate to them - not as employees, co-workers or people. When promotion time comes around, the managers promote only what they know - other white males. People are comfortable with others who look, act, and think like themselves. "So the people in power bring in others like themselves" (Ronald Takaki, 00). This means that as a minority, a person can only go so far in an organization. No minority feels comfortable in such an atmosphere, which is why so many of them are leaving the corporate scene and starting their own businesses. A person can be their own boss and not have to deal with the issue, at least at that level. It is unfortunate to note, however, that 65% of minority owned businesses fail in their 1st year of operation (Ronald Takaki, 00). To combat these problems and help alleviate tensions among the different ethnic groups, many organizations are integrating cultural diversity into the workplace. They have many means by which to approach this. Some companies offer management courses dealing with racial and gender related issues. In others, the focus is placed on coaching women and minorities how to be successful in the white, male, dominated business environment. Still others have developed means of ensuring the upward mobility of women and minorities on an executive level (David Thomas, 1). Many of these organizations also celebrate the different cultural holidays. This serves a dual function in that it not only makes minorities fell welcome, it also serves as a way of exposing white America, and specifically the white, male mangers, to part of what this person is (Ronald Takaki, 00). It introduces to them something that they more than likely would not have gone out and discovered on their own. It shows them that different doesnt mean bad and that there is nothing to fear. With this exposure, managers and their minority employees can at least begin to share some common knowledge and stand on common ground. America has always been called a great melting pot, but it is only true in one sense (Ronald Takaki, 00). What no one seems to realize is that this phrase only held true for the European immigrant experience, not those from Africa, not those from Asia, nor those from South America. Although people of European decent still hold the majority position, it clear and quite frightening to some, that the same people that were excluded from the melting pot are becoming the majorities in major cities all across the country. It is estimated that by the year 00, the minorities of today will be the majorities of tomorrow (David Thomas, 1). With the understand that over the long term, the successful manager is going to have to deal with large numbers of minorities and women in business, and it is presumed most managers want to be successful, want their company to be successful. Therefore, dont walk away from diversity walk up to it.Custom writing service can write essays on Diversity

Ever since I was four years old, I have always wanted to become a veterinarian, or, as I used to call it, a dog doctor. Growing up, I was not like my peers who wanted to be something different every week. I can vividly remember the hot summer days when "Dr. Stephanie" would see her patients, the neighborhood stuffed animals diagnosing all of their ailments, and even at times performing dangerous life threatening procedures. I have never steered away from my goals of becoming a veterinarian. I have only changed my area of specialization from wanting to work on the types of animals that they keep in a zoo, to wanting work on companion animals.

Then I got older and reality started to sink in, I could not go to any school in the world and become a veterinarian, because, after thorough research I discovered that there were only twenty seven schools of veterinary medicine in the United States. Being a native of Louisiana and "Daddy's Girl" by birth, the idea of leaving Louisiana, my comfort zone, to further my education was out of the question. When I found out that Louisiana State University had one of the best veterinary schools in the nation, I was more that happy, I was ecstatic.

Through even more extensive research, I discovered the great number difficulties involved in getting accepted into veterinary school. Throughout my high school career, I made sure that I took the most rigorous high school courses available, in order to be prepared for the long journey ahead. When I decided that Louisiana State University was the university in which I wanted to continue with higher education at, I made sure that I met all of the admission requirements that are necessary in order to gain acceptance into a prestigious school like Louisiana State University. At the beginning of my high school career, all of the area schools were starting a program in which students could focus their academic studies in the area of concentration that their career goals were in. I started by taking a class which taught me about the multitude of careers that were part of the allied health field. I was also informed best ways to achieve a career goal in those areas.

The culmination of that program was the opportunity to complete an internship with a business in which you focused your energy on during the duration of the program. I was chosen to work at a local veterinary hospital. This gave me the awesome opportunity to have "on-the-job" experience in my desired field, thus preparing for my desired career even more thoroughly. It also caused me to experience many of the hard lessons one must go through as a veterinarian. I started at the bottom and cleaned cages. Eventually, I worked my way up to being able to restrain animals and assist in their physical examinations.

Help with essay on Why I'm in college After being on the job for a couple of months, I was the only assistant available when one of the vets was forced to euthanize a golden retriever who had cutaneous melanomas and was very bad off. I was asked to restrain and comfort him as the doctor injected him with the medication that would put him to sleep. Luckily, that occurred in the last ten minutes of my work period that day and I was able to leave right away because it made me think of my dog and wonder how some people could be so cruel to such loyal animals and then I cried for about an hour. I was, however, able to see the good side of things as well. Towards the end of my internship, one of the clients brought in a three month old puppy who had had all four of her legs broken at least once, most likely because of being hit by a car. I was able to develop bond with her, watch her as she healed, and was eventually able to experience the joy of seeing her put up for adoption, finding a good home.

These experiences have led me to have even stronger convictions and generally feel stronger about my desire to help animals and even has even helped me to learn to like people, in general, a little more as well. Because of this, I not only want to get stellar grades in both my undergraduate and graduate studies and become a veterinarian, I now have even more goals such as meeting and helping new people while I am in college. I would also like to become involved in many of the activities such as the Pre- Veterinary Society and Alpha Epsilon Delta, an honorary organization for pre- med students. I wish take advantage of the many opportunities available to me through the College of Agriculture.

College as a whole is very different from high school. In high school things were quite easier. On a personal level, one was at home under the protection of their parents and could just ask for money and it would be given. On the scholastic level, high school and college are in completely different time zones. In high school, one was in school for roughly seven hours each day, interacting with the same close knit group of people on a day to day basis, and had frequent testing in various subject areas. As a college student, one is sleeping on a dorm mattress that to say is comfortable is an overstatement and the food is, well, food to say the most. One must not only attend classes and both follow instructions and study for exams that include multiple chapters. One must also learn how to be a more responsible and disciplined individual through trial and error time management techniques. In addition to the new found and at times exhilarating that freedom that is found and is not available to most high school students comes the great above mentioned responsibility that must not be taken lightly. There is even a more defining purpose for the college experience, learning how to interact with others from different backgrounds on a leveling which we can all coexist. There are many things such as this that I enjoy about college, especially the freedom and the ability to meet so many new people.

What can we learn about life? Everyone learns something about life from experiences, and we all learn about life in different ways. People learn important lessons by observing their own situations. I have learned about life in three helpful ways, through watching and listening to family and friends, taking risks, and making mistakes.

First, I have learned through life from my family and friends. I watch and listen other people besides my family and friends that help me learn about life. I have seen my friends ruin their lives by getting involved with drugs. They became addicted to drugs and became different people. I have learned that taking drugs is not worth hurting my health, myself, or ruining my life. Also, I have learned from my family and friends from watching or listening from their mistakes. I realized that everyone makes mistakes, including myself. I have learned from my family and friends by giving me good advice. Everyone can learn something by having someone giving you advice about certain things about life. For example, they can tell you that education is important in your life. Also, they can give advice about not having children in a young age. It is important to have family members or friends that care about us and explain things to us that we want to know.

Second, I have learned life lessons when I take risks. Some risks I have taken were really difficult, but they were important steps in my life. There are so many options for taking risks for education, marriage, and children. My education is important to me and I took a risk by finishing high school, receiving my diploma, and started planning about going to college. In California, I had finish high school, receive my diploma at Valley Community School, and attended a Merced College. Another risk that I've taken in life is marriage. Marriage is a tough decision to make in life, but it is worth the risk. My marriage is great, and I don't regret getting married. I do realize that being married and being a wife is a hard job, it's hard to do certain things. For example, I am married to a wonderful husband, going to school, and working. I realize it can be hard sometimes but that is how marriage is and I took a risk getting married. Children could be a risk for me. My husband and I don't have any children right now at this point, but we plan to have one someday. We know that having a child can be a lot of hard work and cost a lot of money, but that is all worth it.

Finally, I have learned a lot about life by making mistakes. I've learned my mistakes, as I got older and realized I was foolish when I was a young girl. The mistake that I regret is having tattoos. I was a young girl when I got my tattoos, and as I got older I realized that tattoos are nasty for a girl to have on her body. Another mistake that I regret about is gangs. When I was a teenager at age 14, I was involved with gangs. I thought it was the only important decision in life for me when I was younger. As I got older at age 17, I realized that being in a gang wasn't worth risking my life. I decided to change my ways and got out of the gang banging. Last, I learned from my mistake of fighting with my family members. I noticed that I was so immature when I was younger fighting with my family members. I realized that fighting with my family members was wrong. My family and I went our separate ways and nor talk to each other.Buy Learing About Life term paper

Therefore, I will always learn something about life from my family and friends, taking risks, and making mistakes. Each of these has taught me how to deal with situations that we need to understand about. I realize that everyone needs to learn the important role about life, and understand the meaning about learning.

This food label that was chosen for this assignment was MET-Rx® Protein Plus, which is a high protein nutrition bar. This label is saying that this food bar can be a healthy snack or replace a meal because its bigger than most food bars (100 grams). It has everything you need - lots of protein, 7 essential vitamins and minerals, and great taste. MET-Rx® protein formulation consists of a specific amino-acid array containing high concentrations of low molecular weight whey protein bio-active peptides - the highest quality protein available. On the front of the cover it states the flavor, which is chocolate, chocolate chip and below that it say that it is, "naturally and artificially flavored." It also states that the protein bar has 1 grams of Metamyosyn enhanced protein. Metamyosyn is a unique blend of milk protein isolates, caseinate, whey protein concentrate, egg white, glutamine, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, java chips (sugar, coca butter [alkali processed]), coffee, dextrose, non-fat milk, lecithin, and salt. I chose this because many "high protein, low carbohydrate" bars contain unauthorized nutrient content claims and violate multiple labeling requirements. Nutritional food bars are usually for people who want to lose weight or build muscle. These manufacturers are misleading consumers who rely on protein bars for their nutritional value. Met-Rx® Protein Plus claims they are "high protein," but do not provide a percent Daily Value for protein. A typical nutrition bar weighs about 60 grams and contains 5 grams of carbohydrates (half from starch and half from sugar), 15 grams of protein, and about 5 grams of fat (of which grams are saturated). About one-quarter of the weight generally comes from water. This typical bar would provide 05 calories, with approximately 4% from carbohydrates, % from protein and % from fat (1% from saturated fat). Met-Rx® Protein Plus is not a typical nutrition bar. Although definitions are not well established Met-Rx® Protein Plus bars also include vitamins and minerals or other ingredients permitted only in dietary supplements, such as ephedra, and therefore must be labeled as supplements, rather than foods. This protein bar contains only grams of Net impact Carbs that should be counted toward your daily intake. This problem that also makes this label misleading is that Glycerin is not counted as a carbohydrate when in fact Glycerin is metabolized much like carbohydrates, except that there is no corresponding increase in either insulin levels or blood glucose and therefore should be counted as the total carbohydrate intake. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends that most adults who perform light to moderate activity get roughly ,000 to ,000 calories per day from a varied diet in which about 60% or fewer calories come from carbohydrates, at least 10% come from protein (meats and vegetable proteins), and about 0% come from fats with less than 10% of calories coming specifically from saturated fat. Health care professionals tend to suggest a somewhat higher percentage of calories from protein (15% to 0%) and a lower percentage from carbohydrates, although recommendations vary. Met-Rx® Protein Plus can help provide some of these nutrients but they are not recommended as a total substitute for food. One downside to Met-Rx® Protein Plus is that they tend to be relatively higher in saturated fat. On the other hand, Met-Rx® Protein Plus is low in salt and cholesterol, with a typical bar containing about 150 mg of sodium and generally fewer than 10 mg of cholesterol. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has sent warning letters to several manufacturers who have failed to include certain ingredients in the carbohydrate counts stated on their products. Some labeling discrepancies can be spotted by calculating the expected calories in a product, based on the protein, fat and carbohydrate contents on the label, and seeing if the total matches the declared calories.

Calvary Chapel Distinctives Paper

The Sociological Cycle of Church Growth

First off I just want to say that this paper was very challenging for me to write. I've grown up all my life in a Baptist church and haven't had any Calvary Chapel experiences or prior knowledge. My church doesn't fit into the description of the Baptist Bible Fellowship, which is a good thing I take it, but it is still very different from the Calvary Chapel way. I understand that this class's function is for me to gain knowledge on how Calvary Chapel runs and their basic beliefs & doctrine and it is doing a great job at that. I had to really wring out the facts from this paper and extract all the data I could, but I was able to do it. Just from a teaching standpoint, I know that other Calvary Chapel "Lifers" will be able to pull much more out of a paper like this and I trust that you realize that. Here goes nothing.

I generally found that as I went through the paper, Calvary Chapel has a lot of same characteristics as fundamentalism. For example, fundamentalists, "avoid state and society." Just from listening to the Chuck Smith mp's I have realized how important this aspect is in Chuck's life; thus it is reflected in Calvary Chapel. For example, Chuck only pays in cash (within reason). Why is this? It is because he is avoiding state and society, a fundamentalist idea.

Cheap University Papers on Calvary Chapel Distinctives

Calvary Chapel also opposes the "established culture." Calvary reaches out to the community through such venues as the radio broadcast, and uses modern technology, but it remains separate from the world. "…do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." Romans 1. I feel that Calvary Chapel is obeying this command of remaining separate and set apart from earthly things.

Calvary Chapel, as with fundamentalism, models after Christianity in the New Testament. The early church didn't necessarily worship in cathedrals or sanctuaries…they worshiped in homes, old shopping centers, old super-markets, and so on. Basically, the preaching of the gospel and the teaching of the Word is the catalyst that draws people together. This is one of the major similarities Calvary Chapel has with fundamentalism. Dr. Jerry Falwell gives a blueprint for building a church auditorium "Preach the gospel and put walls around it." Chuck Smith must have either bought this guy's book, or Dr. Falwell based his book on Chuck Smith's methods because this is just too coincidental.

Calvary Chapel also focuses on the Holy Spirit in their teachings. This is another key aspect that sets it apart from other practices, but also relates to the fundamentalist ideal. Fundamentalists emphasize a mystical religious relationship to God. They believe that this experience takes place through a sixth sense, "the Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God." Romans 816. "A mystical relationship with Christ cannot prove one's Christianity, but only reflects one's walk with God."

If I'm not mistaken, Calvary Chapel also believes that Christ will return to earth once again and bring vengeance upon all unrighteousness on this earth. At this time, God will show mercy and love by offering every man salvation. My church believes this, Calvary Chapel believes this, and any other right-minded Christian believes this biblically based truth.

Calvary Chapel preaches that the redemption of man cannot be earned by good works or bought with earthly wealth. The only way to be redeemed is through the blood of Jesus Christ. Belief in Him is essential for entrance into the Kingdom. This again, is a key belief that all Christians must accept and must believe to be called Christians. Episcopal, Baptist, Calvary Chapel, Purpose Driven…these are all different methods within the general canopy of Christianity and they all believe that atonement for our sins is only paid through the death and resurrection of Christ our Lord.

That concludes the fundamentalist section of this paper. As you can see, Calvary Chapel models much of its beliefs on the fundamentalist ideals, yet is still different. There were many fundamentalist aspects that were in the paper, yet didn't apply to Calvary Chapel.

The rest of this paper outlines Evangelists, Denominational, and Deterioration in the Church. Throughout the entire evangelist section I totally thought that nothing really fit with Calvary Chapel. The summary at the end did have some similarities in it. It said "evangelical ministers base their preaching upon…the Word of God and feel that the unsaved should understand God's Word, so they will respond to the gospel." It continues to say, "[Evangelists] feel that manipulation is wrong, even when the goal is proper." I was listening to Chuck talk the other day and he said something along the lines of not making a big guilt trip at the end of all his messages. He thinks that this would force people into making a decision for Christ and that's wrong. You should make that decision when it's the right time for you. If you're forced into it, who's to say how long you will last? If you don't truly desire salvation and it's not sincere, then it means nothing; it becomes a religion rather than a relationship. That's not what Calvary Chapel is about.

From what I see, Chuck took a look at all the doctrinal aspects of churches and had a little potluck-style church development He took a little of this and a little of that…and you got to have some of that. Who knew that his plate would feed so many people and appeal to so many different types of people? The Holy Spirit brought all these aspects together to become Calvary Chapel. Calvary Chapel distinctives are shown through many different aspects and ideals of many different practices, yet form one sound doctrine that works in ways unknown to man.

Coming of Age Essay-The Chosen

Reuven Malter goes through a series of character changes that reflect his coming of age throughout the novel. His character goes through transformations due to the discovery of himself through the experiences he has either with self, his father, David Malter, his friend, Danny Saunders, or Danny's father, Reb Saunders.

Reuven's character as the novel opens is reflective. He introduces Danny and himself and the fact that they have been neighbors and the fact that over a course of five years, they never spoke-primarily due to the fact that they were involved in highly different denominations of Jewish religions. (-4) Reuven's character continues in a confident, loving manner. Although his eye is badly injured and there may be a chance he could not recover well, he is primarily concerned with putting Mr. Galanter out of his way to take him to the hospital() and also concerned about worrying his father(45-47). During his time spent in the hospital, Rueven befriended two people in his room and was always kind to them. One of them was the young, blonde haired, blue eyed boy, that was tragically blind, but that didn't stop Reuven from associating with him and treating him with compassion. The other was Tony Salvo, an ex-boxer who had nothing but stories and enlightening quotes and Rueven listened and humored Tony. He also shared his radio with him so he could hear the latest about the war.(-45)

The first significant occurrence in the novel was the accident at the baseball game.(-0) Rueven was badly injured in his eye by Danny Saunders and at first he hated Danny with everything he had in him. Danny came to apologize but Reuven was still feeling bitter toward Danny and made him very aware of it.(6)But after Danny came and apologized a second time and they visited, Reuven realized that they were becoming friends and he let the rage in him subside.(66-7) He learned through this experience that people are not always what they seem to be just from their reputation or what you have heard about them. The next notable experience was Reuven's arrival at his home. (5)Everything was just as it should be and he was happy again. Many things he did not notice before came luminous and alive. This experience of coming home from being at the hospital made him appreciate what he had with his father and his home. He became silently appreciative and grateful for his life.(5-6)Another experience that Reuven had was hearing his father describe the background of his friend Danny Saunders and his father, Reb Saunders.(100-110) Learning about Danny and his father made Reuven understand why Danny was so smart and why he was brought up in such a strict manner. Reuven's father also tells him that he and Danny should become close friends because he will be the friend to Danny as a safeguard against the dilemmas that plague Danny. The role that Reuven plays as narrator and support for Danny is a more passive one than could be expected, but it nevertheless allows for character development for Reuven, who remarks that everything now looks different.(111)

Reuven Malter's maturation as revealed through his perceptions and attitudes is revealed through several different characteristics. First, he is becoming educated in the Talmud and he and Danny are having "arguments over it"(14) He is also becoming educated in Freud and has intellectual conversations with Danny. They also go to the library together and read and discuss Freud's basic concepts. (14-15) Reuven is maturing in his thinking and priorities. In the beginning of the novel, he was concerned with his sports and somewhat about school but now he is learning more and becoming a man, not only physically but mentally. Further evidence of Reuven's maturation is his attitude toward Reb Saunders. Reuven has disliked Reb for a long time since it was he that was responsible for their separation for so much time, but Reuven, being mature, treats Reb with respect and dignity when at his home having dinner with Danny and his family toward the end of the novel. (81-87) He has matured and treats his elders with honor and esteem.
