Game Theory

Game theory is defined as the analysis of multiple interacting rational agents. This definition is intentionally vague because game theory has been found to apply to an overwhelming amount of concepts. And before going into some of the more interesting examples and applications of game theory to economic sociology, it should be prudent to provide some explanation.

A game is created when any two or more parties interact, and has four distinct parts.

The players. The players are the interacting parties. One player can be one person, or a committee, a company, or an entire country.

Write my Essay on game theroy

The rules. The rules of the game are the set feasible strategies that each player can choose, including when to choose them. A normal form game has players making their choices simultaneously, while a successive game has players responding to one another.

The payoffs. The benefit or harm of each possible interaction must be defined (or predicted) in order to make an accurate decision. The payoff is most often given in terms of utility.

Natural events. A natural event is anything that can plausibly happen outside of the control of the players and inside the realm of the game. Natural events are only important in successive games or in normal form games that are repeated over time.

Having defined the component of a game and the purpose of the game, it should also be helpful to define and interpret the different types of equilibriums that may occur. They are presented in the order of plausibility from most to least. It is important to notice that the most plausible form of equilibrium is such because it makes the fewest assumptions.

Dominant strategy equilibrium. This is an equilibrium where all the players have a dominant strategy. That is, each player has a strategy that is their best choice no matter what the other players do. This is the most valid for of equilibrium because it does not assumes nothing, including rationality.

Dominance solvable solution. In this type of solution, dominated strategies are eliminated from the realm of possibility until each player has only one strategy remaining. This is still a highly valid form of equilibrium; however, it assumes rationality and that the players have knowledge of the payoffs.

Nash equilibrium. In Nash equilibrium, each player action is payoff maximizing given their beliefs about the other players. In Nash equilibrium, we make a huge leap of faith and assume that the players' beliefs are always correct.

Mixed strategy equilibrium. If no singular equilibrium exists, it is possible to determine an equilibrium defining the proportion of times each player should choose each of his or her strategies.

Having defined the elements of a game and the different types of equilibriums encountered, I know wish to switch gears away from the dry task of definition to the more interesting application.

The first example is called the "prisoners dilemma," and is the single most popular example in game theory. The story states that two criminals have just been apprehended for committing a crime. They are put in separate rooms and given the following choice, confess or deny. The payoffs are given in the following matrix, in the amount of years each will have to serve in prison.

Player

Confess Deny

Confess 5,5 0,40

Deny 40,0 1,1

Player 1

As we can see, each player has a dominant strategy. No matter what player chooses, player 1 will choose to confess. Notice that if player denies, player 1 will confess and serve 0 time. However, if player confesses, player one must choose confess as well to reduce his sentence from 40 years to 5 years. Since this game is also symmetric, the dominant strategy for both of the players is the same.

The dominant strategy equilibrium is then for both criminals to confess, and the payoff is 5 years in prison each. This is an interesting example to consider especially since the outcome of the game, both criminals confessing, is significantly different from what one would assume. It is a strange thing to imagine that it isn't in the criminal's best interest to deny his crime, however game theory has very nicely shown us that it sometimes is.

The next example is commonly called the "chicken" example. Chicken is a competition wherein two people get in cars and drive directly towards on another. The first person to swerve to avoid the collision is the loser. The payoffs are given in the following matrix, in terms of utility.

Player

Swerve Don't

Swerve , 1,10

Don't 10,1 0,0

Player 1

This example is a bit more complicated. Recalling our definition of Nash equilibrium, we assume that each player has the proper belief about what the other player will do. If player on believes that player two will swerve, then Player 1 will choose to not swerve, and vice versa. Since neither player has a dominant strategy, since each player will change his strategy based upon his belief about the strategy of the other player, and this matrix is not dominance solvable, we check for Nash equilibrium.

What we find is that there are two. Both (don't, swerve) and (swerve, don't) are Nash equilibriums. The thing that makes this example complicated is that it is difficult to determine which equilibrium will be reality, however as long as the two players coordinate properly, and nobody gets hurt in a horrible collision, it doesn't really matter.

Though my examples were quite simple, it is important to note that game theory can be much more deeply applied. Any number of players and any number of strategies may be input to determine what types of actions the players will take. It seems to me that game theory is one of the more promising bridges between economics and sociology.

The "planet" Pluto was discovered by scientist in 10. Even then, there was controversy over whether this little ball of ice should be considered a planet. It was decided it should, mainly because since the gravity of the eighth planet, Neptune, was found because it was tugging on the seventh planet, Uranus, and then Pluto was found when its gravity tugged on the orbit of Neptune. Pluto was just a continuation in the time-tested practice of discovering the existence of planets from the behavior of other objects in space.

However, people have proved many various reasons why this should not be enough to keep considering Pluto the ninth planet in out solar system. After researching these reasons extensively, I have decided that really, Pluto should not be considered a planet. Here are some reasons why I think what I do.

Look at the composition of the first eight planets compared to Pluto. The first four planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, are rocky in composition, and the next four, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, are gas planets. Pluto fits in with neither of these categories, rocky or gassy. Pluto is made up mostly of ice and rock, but not enough rock of count as a rocky planet, plus all the rocky planets are near the sun. Pluto is the farthest "planet" from the sun of the current nine known planets. In fact, less than 1/ of Pluto is rock. It really just is this tiny little ice ball floating out in the depths of space. If there were other planets made primarily of ice too, maybe Pluto would fit in more, but as far as we know it is the only planet made of mainly ice, which just doesn't fit in with the other planets. So one reason not to consider Pluto a planet is; the different composition of the planet from all the other planets.

Another main reason not to consider Pluto a planet is the size of the planet. Pluto is ridiculously small. It has a diameter of only 1,440 miles. That is 1/6 of the Earths, or less than half of Mercury's diameter, and those are two of the smaller planets already. Seven moons in the solar system are even larger than this little ice ball of a planet. Many of the comets that lie in the Oort Cloud, a ring of billions of comets that lies far beyond Pluto, are larger than the planet itself. Many scientists just think it should be classified as a large asteroid, or the largest of the Kuiper Belt objects. Another option, thought of by scientist Brian Marsden, is classifying Pluto as a "minor planet" like asteroids and comets, and giving it a number, or just lumping it with some other new class of objects. Anyway, one reason to take into account about why Pluto should not be considered a planet any more is the extreme size difference between Pluto and the other planets.

Do my essay on Should Pluto be considered a Planet? CHEAP !

If Pluto is to be called a planet, then certain actions of the past must be taken into consideration. In 1801, a rocky body similar to Pluto was discovered between Jupiter and Mars, and was proclaimed a planet and named Ceres. However, a year later Ceres had its planethood revoked because it was evident that it really was just the largest member of what is now called the asteroid belt. Either we can do the same thing to Pluto that was done to Ceres all those years ago, or if we keep Pluto as a planet, we should really be fair and reinstate Ceres as a planet, because why should one planet get special treatment all these years later?

Honestly, stripping Pluto of its title as a planet would not be easy. Chances are there would be some sort of vote or major conference or something to have lots of people decide if it is a good idea. Also, Pluto has been considered a planet since 10. Thousands of textbooks and scientific posters and documents have been printed saying, hey, Pluto is the ninth planet. Some of those posters and books have been sitting in schools for ages and ages. People would have to go to a lot of trouble to reprint posters giving the new, "correct" information, or textbooks that could talk about how there USED to be nine planets, and why now there are only eight. It would be work, but life is work. If we have to get out there and redo things with newer, more correct information, than it should be done. It wouldn't be a waste if it was being done to help people learn the correct facts about the solar system.

In short, I don't feel Pluto should be considered a planet any longer. It is ridiculously smaller than all other planets, it is made of rock and ice while the other planets are either gas giants or all rock, and it really just fits in better as a minor planet or some type of large asteroid or comet. If you just look straight at the facts about Pluto compared to those of the main eight planets, it just doesn't fit in. It would be a lot of work to take away Pluto's title now, but if it means people in generations to come will be learning the correct information about the world around them, it is so worth it.

The Aesthetic Movement

The Aesthetic Movement was a term used to describe a movement of the 1870s and 1880s that manifested itself in the fine and decorative arts and architecture in Britain and subsequently in the USA. Reacting to what was seen as evidence of philistinism in art and design, it was characterized by the cult of the beautiful and an emphasis on the sheer pleasure to be derived from it. In painting there was a belief in the autonomy of art, the concept of ART FOR ART'S SAKE, which originated in France as a literary movement and was introduced into Britain around 1860. One of the most influential artists of this movement was an American by the name of James McNeil Whistler (184-10) who brought a totally new style of art to Britain. Whistler was very interested in art from the East and his influence is shown in many of his works. His influence undoubtedly would have come from the Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige in which his painting of 'Moonlight at Ryogoko' 1857 is very similar in style and composition to that of Whistler's 'Battersea Bridge'.

At about the same time he was painting it, Whistler was working on another and bigger blue-and-gold project, his greatest sustained essay in the decorative The Peacock Room, now in the Freer Gallery in Washington. Originally it was painted for the London house of an English millionaire, Frederick Leyland, who had asked his architect Thomas Jeckyll to adapt a dining room to display his collection of blue-and-white Chinese and Japanese porcelain. Its walls were covered with panels of antique Cordovan leather, which Whistler proceeded to cover with thick layers of glossy blue-green paint, meant to imitate the surface of Japanese enamel, decorated with designs of peacocks in gold leaf. Leylands pique at losing his expensive leather, which the antique dealer who sold it to him had claimed, no doubt falsely, was salvaged from the wreck of the Spanish Armada in 1588, set off a train of quarrels and recriminations between the annoyed patron and the touchy artist.Custom writing service can write essays on The Aesthetic Movement

Determined to finish his masterpiece, Whistler agreed to halve the agreed fee of ,000 pounds. Then Leyland was much perturbed to find that Whistler, with his mania for publicity, had been inviting not only artist friends and prospective patrons but the press and the public into his house to view the work in progress. In revenge, he insulted Whistler by paying him in pounds, not guineas. One paid tradesmen in pounds, professionals in guineas - and Whistler was extremely sensitive on the matter of his professional standing. Whistlers own revenge was to decorate the south wall with a design of two squabbling peacocks, one rich and the other poor, somewhat in the manner of an Edo period Japanese screen.

Another example of the Edo screen being used is in the main painting in the Peacock Room titled; Rose and Silver 'la Princesse du Pays de la Porcelaine' or 'The Princess of the Porcelain Country'. This picture was first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1865. The sitter is Christine Spartali, the daughter of Michael Spartali who was the Greek Consul General in London and Friend of the Ionides family. She was also the sister of Marie Spartali who had previously been painted by Dante Gabriel Rossetti.

This picture shows the exuberant colours that are typical of Whistler's work, but mainly referring to his influenced work on the Japanese cultures. The untypical pose of the sitter, or in this case the standee, shows the relaxed way in which Whistler tended to use his pallet. However the aesthetic movement portrayed the expressionism that was lacking in the early part of the nineteenth century.

Cloning for a Cure How "Embryo Splitting"

Could Effectively Treat Infertility

Jane and Adam, a recently married couple in their mid-thirties, are living the American dream. Both Jane and Adam have high paying professional careers and live in an upscale suburb of Pleasantville, USA. But, both Jane and Adam feel that something is missing, that somehow their life together is not complete. Jane and Adam realize that they have all this happiness and no one to share it with. After much consideration, Jane and Adam decide it is time to start a family. After many unsuccessful attempts at getting pregnant, Jane goes to her doctor and discovers that her body is unable to produce a sufficient number of viable eggs on its own. In a situation like this, fertility drugs and in vetro fertilization can only solve part of the problem. By current standards, Jane and Adam's dream cannot be realized because, like one in every 1 couples in this nation, they suffer from an incurable form of infertility ("Infertility in America" 1).

"Infertility [the inability of a couple to bear a child after one year of attempted conception] is a condition that affects more than 5 million couples nation wide", says Dr. Mary Martin Pierce, director of the in vetro Fertilization Center at San Diego Medical Center ("Infertility in America" 1). In the past two decades, several treatments have produced in an attempt to cure infertility, and as of yet, none are of them are 100% effective. And, in extreme cases like Jane's, there are no conventional solutions. However, in the past ten years, modern medicine has begun to explore the potential benefits of cloning embryo cells (Brock 5). Embryonic cell cloning, when used in combination with other modern procedures, can be an effective treatment for infertility.

Embryonic cloning, or simply "embryo splitting," has been used on mammals since the early 180's, has already been used to produce several, genetically diverse offspring (Singer 16). In recent years, philosophers and doctors alike have reasonably concluded that this treatment could be used to treat human infertility. Amongst the leading contributors in this field are Dr. Ronald Green, the Director of the Ethics Institute at Dartmouth College, and Peter Singer, a noted Philosopher and Director of the Center for Human Bioethics at Monash University, Australia.

With the aid of today's medical technology, the process of embryo cloning is quite simple. First, an embryo cluster of two to eight cells is selected. Next, through a process called "cell-mass division" the large group is broken down into individual cells (Harris 1). Finally, these individual egg cells can be fertilized and either frozen or directly implanted into the uterus through in vetro fertilization.

While it is true embryonic cloning alone cannot cure infertility, when it is used in conjunction with other high-tech methods (e.g. vetro fertilization, cryogenically freezing fertilized egg cells) the procedure could be highly effective (Brock 5). According to Robert Gilmore McKinnell, a biologist specializing in cloning research, "[combining methods] has a multiplier effect… if procedure x has a success rate of 5% alone, when it is combined with procedure y, which has a success of 10%, the overall effect will be much greater than the individual sums" (7). In the case of Jane, embryo splitting would drastically increase the number of viable embryo cells for implantation; thus, it could multiply the success rate of in vetro fertilization, which has an average success of only 5%, increase her overall chance of becoming pregnant ("Infertility in America" 4).

Although embryo splitting is highly effective in theory, the application of such a practice would not be practical at this point in time. Because of the monetary costs related to developing technologies that could directly copy human cells, the process is not yet economically feasible. Additionally, because there would be limited numbers of medical and scientific professionals who could actually perform the procedure, embryonic cell cloning would not be convenient (Green ). Furthermore, there are numerous ethical and moral concerns about cloning that must be addressed, if not resolved, before any experimentation can be conducted on humans.

While the future of embryonic cloning for the purpose of assisted reproduction remains uncertain, the hopes of couples like Jane and Adam live on. And maybe, someday in the near future, the medical and scientific communities will not only find a way to make embryo splitting a more affordable, but also a more readily available option for infertile couples.

Baraka, as its name suggests, is a documentary striving to bring to our attention

the blessings of nature the earth, the vessel that bears all life. It takes us to four corners

of the earth, showing us snippets of the wonders of the world. The interesting thing about

Baraka is that it is done without any dialogue, leaving the viewer free to interpret the

Custom writing service can write essays on Baraka

themes for himself. The following is a list of the themes I derived after watching the

video.

1) Life is a gift of nature

The video begins with the rising of the sun. It is a new day fresh and

innocent. Life stirs in a small village in Nepal. The sun's rays washes over

Buddhist temples. People wander into the street going about their daily chores.

From the slopes of the great Himalayas to the deep mazes of the Grand Canyon,

the earth is a miracle in itself. Nature balances out everything and can only be

beautiful and caring. It allows life to adapt itself to its surroundings, just as the

monkeys on the cold, bitter slopes of Japan adapt themselves to the extreme

temperatures by taking refuge in the hot springs.

) Diversity of Cultures

The world is made up of a number of cultures, rich, unique and beautiful

in their own way. The different tribes adorn themselves in colourful beads and

paint their bodies. The video shows clips of the native Indians, Australian

Aborigines and African tribals, all expressing themselves through their dance and

rituals- all rejoicing in the world around them.

) Religion and prayer- The path to God

The scene now begins to flip through different religions. We see Hindu

sages reading the Bhagvat Geeta (holy book of the Hindus). We are then

transported to the land of the three converging religions- Jerusalem. We get a

glimpse of the Wailing Wall (Jews), Sufi Muslims in Turkey, Catholicism and its

beautifully intricate churches and Tibetan monks burning candles and incense.

However through all their differences we see that one thread binds them all

together- prayer. We see that despite all their differences the core of all religions

is prayer- a chance to converse with God. In this way we are reminded about the

blessing of being able to connect with God and the peace we get when we find

him.

4) Religion Vs. Technology

However, as time goes by and man begins to build a better life for himself,

he begins to drift away from religion in his rush to advance in life. The poor

Buddhist monk, begging for alms in Tokyo, is ignored by all around him. His

pace is slower than that of the herds and herds of businessmen and women

whizzing past him. This depicts how religion cannot keep up with advancement.

5) Technology Vs. Nature

The shrill sound of a chain saw, the blowing of horns, the clouds of smoke

and smog replace the once green forests. Man, selfishly cuts down everything in

his path. He sucks the life out of the earth, not once looking back at the

destruction he causes.

6) Rich-" islands among the poor"

The scene switches again. We see that technological advancement exists

alongside backwardness. The rich are but islands of wealth among seas of poor.

We see garbage dumps of India, where people make a living off society's

leftovers. They are the ones left behind, the ones society chooses to forget.

Development does not happen evenly.

7) Society erases individualism

Now we are suddenly pulled into the present. The scene changes to Japan.

Millions of people rush to work. The pace is much faster. The video compares the

morning rush at the subway station to a chicken farm. The video projects how

society neatly divides itself to work the different parts of the economic

machinery. How people are graded, divided and sorted into different lives. Life is

nothing but an assembly line.

8) Last grasp at tradition and culture

The clip of the three Japanese girls in uniform, shows society's last, desperate

attempt at preserving culture and tradition in the young. It seems that while the

rest of the world speeds by we forget our roots. The world is changing too fast.

) War- it makes a mockery out of anything that is peaceful

Now the scene changes again, we see the worst in man- War! The plain

graveyard symbolises generations of forgotten destruction. The irony of a soldier

standing in front of the Wailing Wall shows us how we twist religion to serve our

own selfish means. The highway of death, burning Kuwait oil fields, Khmer

Rouge in Cambodia and Tieneman Square in China all show us how man's greed

and jealousy can only result in death and destrction.

10) The circle of life completes itself

We go back to a slower pace. We see the dismal scenes of Egyptian ruins,

Chinese burial sights, Indian death pyres etc., that remind us that all civilisations

come to an end. Nature reclaims its place over the ruins of humanity. The sun sets

on one civilisation only to rise to begin another day.

Proof Review

Proof was the first play I have attended at MJC. I thought the theater department did an excellent job at producing it. Being that the play took part on a proscenium stage, and given the size of the theater, in addition to being in row B I felt very connected to the actors and actresses. The actors performed marvelously. I thought it was amazing that the play interacted so well with only one backdrop. Catherine was excellent in her role, acting back and fourth between anger, depression, love and hate. She has very good qualities about her and looked as if she had been acting for a long time. I had a feeling that the profanity did not belong in the play, I felt like it was thrown in just for the cause. It looked strange when the actors would cuss, it did not look natural as if they almost had to force it out of their mouths.

The character Hal had a lot of humor about him. He was entertaining to watch and funny to listen to. I thought he played his part well, but was not as good as Robert. Robert, in my opinion, was the best actor on the stage. He was very elegant in the way he presented himself, and had such a power when he delivered his role. Robert was the best actor, but I could not stand Claire. I didn't think she was good and was a very annoying character. Her voice was very unwelcome when she spoke. Every time that it was her turn to talk I would cringe in my seat. I may be mistaken in my judgment due to the fact that I am not a theater major, but this is my feeling on her skills. Many of the actors were believable, but I did not feel that Robert made his impairment look convincing.

Most of the actor could not perform their roles without the help of their counterparts. Many scenes, such as Robert and Catherine arguing, would not have conducted themselves well without the help of both actors. All the actors acted professional and presented themselves properly. I was shocked with the kissing scenes. There was a lot of intimacy and touching throughout the performance. The actors must be very close off the set as they are on it.

I thought that there was an idea about the production, but it was the viewer's job to determine what it was. The director of the production never told the audience what was happening during the movie, but after looking at the scene it was easy to see where the story was going. I think that the kissing played a big part in the play. It stuck out the most and was a huge factor in determining where the play was going.

I thought that the play ran smoothly. All the elements seemed to run together. The props helped a lot in the production. I really enjoyed the opening scene, with the Champaign bottle. It was enjoyable to know that the actors were not used to drinking and that not everything goes as planned. An example of everything not going as planned was when Catherine spilled the Champaign on the floor and spilled it on herself, I think that mishaps like those result in a good play, which makes it, look natural.

For the type of play, the scenery was sufficient. I liked how the inside of the house was visible from the outside; I felt it gave the audience a closer feeling to the play itself. The whole play took place "outside of the house" which was fantastic for the dialogue and acting. The colors of the house started to become very plain. I think that in the future, the house should have interesting designs that capture the audience's eye. But Proof was a sort of dark play. Catherine was always mad at something, mad her father died, mad her sister wanted to take her to New York, mad she had no boy friend, and mad that she thought she was becoming like her father. That is one of the reasons for the solid color of green.

The costumes set the mood for the scenes. The play involves three young adults and an elderly man. The costumes fit the personalities of each character perfectly. Claire was always in business suits, Catherine's clothes represented her being lost in life, Hal was a college grad and a nerd, and Robert was a matured man who was losing his mind. Every costume helped the audience understand the importance of the role and analyze the scenes importance.

I thought that the lighting gave the audience a feel for the scene. The lights were bright during the happy parts of the play. During the flashbacks to when Catherine was heading off to college, she looked so happy and the light would reflect off the clothes that she wore giving a more comforting look. The lighting was also changed when the moods of the characters changed. When Catherine and her father were fighting, the light tone was very different then the opening of the play when her father was dead. A lot of the lighting was unrealistic, due to the setup of the stage, but I think that the lighting crew realized this and tried to work around it. The lighting followed the actors, which made their faces visible to the audience. The only time that I was unable to fully see a character was when his back was turned to the audience, other than that everything was fine.

The text was no Shakespeare, but it did a fine job when getting the idea of the play out to the audience. Much of the text was told by the tone of voice that each actor possessed. When a character was yelling or talking regular, the text was put into different perspective, it gave the dialogue more meaning.

After finding out the major role each character was in charge of, I could put the whole play into perspective. The lines made more sense when I knew the personalities that each character possessed. I am sorry to say that I did not identify myself with any of the characters, Robert was crazy, Catherine was unstable and confused, Hal was a nerd who likes math, my worse subject, and Claire seems so upper class like she is better then everyone around her. But I thought the theater department earned my dollar, the play was good.
