. Visit a homeless shelter in or around Glendale.

4. Visit churches or hospitals.

Ø If we are unable to find a place to visit, we planed to substitute this activity with visiting The Getty Museum.

CASE MANAGER PROCEDURES

Ø All case managers should keep in touch with Christina on a regular basis. If for any reason a case manager or his/her mentor or mentee can not attend a group activity, they should inform Christina.

Ø All case managers should let Christina know of any problems that may arise with a mentor or mentee.

Ø All mentors should return their case managers phone calls. All case managers should return Christina's phone calls.

Ø Case managers should be present at all group activities.

Ø Alina is in charge of organizing this event.

Ø All Mentors should attend this training.

Ø It is the goal of this program to have fifty mentors by the end of this year.

Ø Mentors do not seem to have the desired level of commitment to the program. They should be responsible for keeping in touch with their case managers.

Ø The program needs more male mentors. There are still four male mentees who do not have mentors.

Ø Task Force members are welcome to take part in the training.

Ø All case managers should attend this training. It is their duty to make sure that all mentors are present at the training.

PARENT MEETING November 7TH, 001

Ø All parents should be present at the meeting.

Ø The program will be introduced to the parents. We should inform them about their responsibilities, role and support to the program

Ø Parents should be aware of the level of commitment of their children to the program.

Ø Case managers should call the parents to invite them to the meeting. Ara will call them as well.

Ø Since case managers will be meeting the parent for the first time at this meeting, it is mandatory that all case managers attend the meeting.

Ø At the meeting our mission and the calendar of events will be introduced.

Ø There will be a parent meeting on the last Thursday of each month. After each meeting case managers should sit with the parents and talk about the level of commitment of the mentees. This will make their experience very personal.

Ø Adrin is heading this committee. They have met twice already, and have come up with ways to raise money.

Ø Having gatherings at people's homes or other events.

Could Effectively Treat Infertility

Jane and Adam, a recently married couple in their mid-thirties, are living the American dream. Both Jane and Adam have high paying professional careers and live in an upscale suburb of Pleasantville, USA. But, both Jane and Adam feel that something is missing, that somehow their life together is not complete. Jane and Adam realize that they have all this happiness and no one to share it with. After much consideration, Jane and Adam decide it is time to start a family. After many unsuccessful attempts at getting pregnant, Jane goes to her doctor and discovers that her body is unable to produce a sufficient number of viable eggs on its own. In a situation like this, fertility drugs and in vetro fertilization can only solve part of the problem. By current standards, Jane and Adam's dream cannot be realized because, like one in every 1 couples in this nation, they suffer from an incurable form of infertility ("Infertility in America" 1).

"Infertility [the inability of a couple to bear a child after one year of attempted conception] is a condition that affects more than 5 million couples nation wide", says Dr. Mary Martin Pierce, director of the in vetro Fertilization Center at San Diego Medical Center ("Infertility in America" 1). In the past two decades, several treatments have produced in an attempt to cure infertility, and as of yet, none are of them are 100% effective. And, in extreme cases like Jane's, there are no conventional solutions. However, in the past ten years, modern medicine has begun to explore the potential benefits of cloning embryo cells (Brock 5). Embryonic cell cloning, when used in combination with other modern procedures, can be an effective treatment for infertility.

Embryonic cloning, or simply "embryo splitting," has been used on mammals since the early 180's, has already been used to produce several, genetically diverse offspring (Singer 16). In recent years, philosophers and doctors alike have reasonably concluded that this treatment could be used to treat human infertility. Amongst the leading contributors in this field are Dr. Ronald Green, the Director of the Ethics Institute at Dartmouth College, and Peter Singer, a noted Philosopher and Director of the Center for Human Bioethics at Monash University, Australia.

With the aid of today's medical technology, the process of embryo cloning is quite simple. First, an embryo cluster of two to eight cells is selected. Next, through a process called "cell-mass division" the large group is broken down into individual cells (Harris 1). Finally, these individual egg cells can be fertilized and either frozen or directly implanted into the uterus through in vetro fertilization.

While it is true embryonic cloning alone cannot cure infertility, when it is used in conjunction with other high-tech methods (e.g. vetro fertilization, cryogenically freezing fertilized egg cells) the procedure could be highly effective (Brock 5). According to Robert Gilmore McKinnell, a biologist specializing in cloning research, "[combining methods] has a multiplier effect… if procedure x has a success rate of 5% alone, when it is combined with procedure y, which has a success of 10%, the overall effect will be much greater than the individual sums" (7). In the case of Jane, embryo splitting would drastically increase the number of viable embryo cells for implantation; thus, it could multiply the success rate of in vetro fertilization, which has an average success of only 5%, increase her overall chance of becoming pregnant ("Infertility in America" 4).

Although embryo splitting is highly effective in theory, the application of such a practice would not be practical at this point in time. Because of the monetary costs related to developing technologies that could directly copy human cells, the process is not yet economically feasible. Additionally, because there would be limited numbers of medical and scientific professionals who could actually perform the procedure, embryonic cell cloning would not be convenient (Green ). Furthermore, there are numerous ethical and moral concerns about cloning that must be addressed, if not resolved, before any experimentation can be conducted on humans.

While the future of embryonic cloning for the purpose of assisted reproduction remains uncertain, the hopes of couples like Jane and Adam live on. And maybe, someday in the near future, the medical and scientific communities will not only find a way to make embryo splitting a more affordable, but also a more readily available option for infertile couples.

beautifully intricate churches and Tibetan monks burning candles and incense.

However through all their differences we see that one thread binds them all

together- prayer. We see that despite all their differences the core of all religions

is prayer- a chance to converse with God. In this way we are reminded about the

blessing of being able to connect with God and the peace we get when we find

him.

4) Religion Vs. Technology

However, as time goes by and man begins to build a better life for himself,

he begins to drift away from religion in his rush to advance in life. The poor

Buddhist monk, begging for alms in Tokyo, is ignored by all around him. His

pace is slower than that of the herds and herds of businessmen and women

whizzing past him. This depicts how religion cannot keep up with advancement.

5) Technology Vs. Nature

The shrill sound of a chain saw, the blowing of horns, the clouds of smoke

and smog replace the once green forests. Man, selfishly cuts down everything in

his path. He sucks the life out of the earth, not once looking back at the

destruction he causes.

6) Rich-" islands among the poor"

The scene switches again. We see that technological advancement exists

alongside backwardness. The rich are but islands of wealth among seas of poor.

We see garbage dumps of India, where people make a living off society's

leftovers. They are the ones left behind, the ones society chooses to forget.

Development does not happen evenly.

7) Society erases individualism

Now we are suddenly pulled into the present. The scene changes to Japan.

Millions of people rush to work. The pace is much faster. The video compares the

morning rush at the subway station to a chicken farm. The video projects how

society neatly divides itself to work the different parts of the economic

machinery. How people are graded, divided and sorted into different lives. Life is

nothing but an assembly line.

8) Last grasp at tradition and culture

The clip of the three Japanese girls in uniform, shows society's last, desperate

attempt at preserving culture and tradition in the young. It seems that while the

rest of the world speeds by we forget our roots. The world is changing too fast.

) War- it makes a mockery out of anything that is peaceful

Now the scene changes again, we see the worst in man- War! The plain

graveyard symbolises generations of forgotten destruction. The irony of a soldier

standing in front of the Wailing Wall shows us how we twist religion to serve our

own selfish means. The highway of death, burning Kuwait oil fields, Khmer

Rouge in Cambodia and Tieneman Square in China all show us how man's greed

and jealousy can only result in death and destrction.

10) The circle of life completes itself

We go back to a slower pace. We see the dismal scenes of Egyptian ruins,

Chinese burial sights, Indian death pyres etc., that remind us that all civilisations

come to an end. Nature reclaims its place over the ruins of humanity. The sun sets

on one civilisation only to rise to begin another day.

Proof Review

Proof was the first play I have attended at MJC. I thought the theater department did an excellent job at producing it. Being that the play took part on a proscenium stage, and given the size of the theater, in addition to being in row B I felt very connected to the actors and actresses. The actors performed marvelously. I thought it was amazing that the play interacted so well with only one backdrop. Catherine was excellent in her role, acting back and fourth between anger, depression, love and hate. She has very good qualities about her and looked as if she had been acting for a long time. I had a feeling that the profanity did not belong in the play, I felt like it was thrown in just for the cause. It looked strange when the actors would cuss, it did not look natural as if they almost had to force it out of their mouths.

The character Hal had a lot of humor about him. He was entertaining to watch and funny to listen to. I thought he played his part well, but was not as good as Robert. Robert, in my opinion, was the best actor on the stage. He was very elegant in the way he presented himself, and had such a power when he delivered his role. Robert was the best actor, but I could not stand Claire. I didn't think she was good and was a very annoying character. Her voice was very unwelcome when she spoke. Every time that it was her turn to talk I would cringe in my seat. I may be mistaken in my judgment due to the fact that I am not a theater major, but this is my feeling on her skills. Many of the actors were believable, but I did not feel that Robert made his impairment look convincing.

Most of the actor could not perform their roles without the help of their counterparts. Many scenes, such as Robert and Catherine arguing, would not have conducted themselves well without the help of both actors. All the actors acted professional and presented themselves properly. I was shocked with the kissing scenes. There was a lot of intimacy and touching throughout the performance. The actors must be very close off the set as they are on it.

I thought that there was an idea about the production, but it was the viewer's job to determine what it was. The director of the production never told the audience what was happening during the movie, but after looking at the scene it was easy to see where the story was going. I think that the kissing played a big part in the play. It stuck out the most and was a huge factor in determining where the play was going.

I thought that the play ran smoothly. All the elements seemed to run together. The props helped a lot in the production. I really enjoyed the opening scene, with the Champaign bottle. It was enjoyable to know that the actors were not used to drinking and that not everything goes as planned. An example of everything not going as planned was when Catherine spilled the Champaign on the floor and spilled it on herself, I think that mishaps like those result in a good play, which makes it, look natural.

For the type of play, the scenery was sufficient. I liked how the inside of the house was visible from the outside; I felt it gave the audience a closer feeling to the play itself. The whole play took place "outside of the house" which was fantastic for the dialogue and acting. The colors of the house started to become very plain. I think that in the future, the house should have interesting designs that capture the audience's eye. But Proof was a sort of dark play. Catherine was always mad at something, mad her father died, mad her sister wanted to take her to New York, mad she had no boy friend, and mad that she thought she was becoming like her father. That is one of the reasons for the solid color of green.

The costumes set the mood for the scenes. The play involves three young adults and an elderly man. The costumes fit the personalities of each character perfectly. Claire was always in business suits, Catherine's clothes represented her being lost in life, Hal was a college grad and a nerd, and Robert was a matured man who was losing his mind. Every costume helped the audience understand the importance of the role and analyze the scenes importance.

I thought that the lighting gave the audience a feel for the scene. The lights were bright during the happy parts of the play. During the flashbacks to when Catherine was heading off to college, she looked so happy and the light would reflect off the clothes that she wore giving a more comforting look. The lighting was also changed when the moods of the characters changed. When Catherine and her father were fighting, the light tone was very different then the opening of the play when her father was dead. A lot of the lighting was unrealistic, due to the setup of the stage, but I think that the lighting crew realized this and tried to work around it. The lighting followed the actors, which made their faces visible to the audience. The only time that I was unable to fully see a character was when his back was turned to the audience, other than that everything was fine.

The text was no Shakespeare, but it did a fine job when getting the idea of the play out to the audience. Much of the text was told by the tone of voice that each actor possessed. When a character was yelling or talking regular, the text was put into different perspective, it gave the dialogue more meaning.

After finding out the major role each character was in charge of, I could put the whole play into perspective. The lines made more sense when I knew the personalities that each character possessed. I am sorry to say that I did not identify myself with any of the characters, Robert was crazy, Catherine was unstable and confused, Hal was a nerd who likes math, my worse subject, and Claire seems so upper class like she is better then everyone around her. But I thought the theater department earned my dollar, the play was good.

The movie Helen of Troy and the epic poem called The Iliad, written by Homer, are supposed to be the same story about the Trojan War, but are different in several obvious ways. The three main differences in the poem and the movie were the character personalities, deaths of the characters and their murderers, and lastly the points of view.

First, the characters' personalities differ in the movie from the poem. In fact, Paris seemed like a brave character in the movie, but in the poem he seemed a little cowardly and boasted often. Furthermore, in the poem Paris is constantly in need of being saved because his boasting habits would get him into fights where he would be overmatched, like the match with Menelaus. But in the movie, he does not boast as much and fights bravely. Next, Hector was considered a respected and brave warrior in the poem, but in the movie he was even more so and had even more courage. Wherefore, in the epic poem The Iliad, Hector went to fight Achilles knowing he would die, but he still ran from him around the walls of Troy. But in the movie he never ran, and looked like he accepted his fate better than he did in the poem. A third major point is Achilles seemed angrier in the movie than in the poem. In other words, Achilles was so angry with Agamemnon when he attempted to take his well-deserved prize, Briseis that he fought back and tried to keep her in the movie, instead of giving her up willingly like he did in the poem. To sum up, the characters' personalities in the movie were similar to their personalities in the poem, yet they still differed.

Secondly, in the movie of The Iliad, many characters died and were killed differently then they were in the poem. And so, the murderer of Patroclus was different in the two stories. More specifically, in the poem Hector murdered Patroclus, which is why Achilles wanted to fight with Hector. The movie was different because Paris was the one who killed Patroclus. Next, Achilles was also killed in Troy. Thus the movie, Helen of Troy, Achilles is killed because Paris shoots him in the heel with an arrow, yet in the book his death is never mentioned. Also, Paris is another warrior who is killed. Likewise, Menelaus and his men killed Paris for taking Helen from Sparta, but again in the poem the death of Paris is not talked about. To conclude, the deaths of the characters are different in these two versions of The Iliad.

Lastly, the points of view were not the same in the poem and the movie. To begin with, the narrator of the poem was different from the narrator in the movie. More specifically, the narrator in the movie was Paris and it was mainly about how the war affected his love life. Achilles was the poem's narrator and it talked a lot about how Patroclus dying had greatly affected him. Secondly, the gods were not shown in the movie so their points of view were not talked about and did not have as much influence on the movie as they did in the poem. Also, since the gods were not involved in the movie, Thetis, his mother, did not comfort Achilles as he was in the poem's version of The Iliad. Next, the movie concentrated more on the Trojan's point of view, but the poem concentrated on the Achaeans. All in all, since the movie was told by Paris it focused on the Trojans but the poem focused on the Achaeans since Achilles narrated it.
