1. If firms in a competitive industry are presently earning an economic profit, what long-run consequences exist for the number of firms in this industry and the market price of their product.

Number of Firms Product Price

a. Increase Increase

b. Increase Decrease

Order Custom MAN paper

An industry earning a profit will attract firms, thus the number of firms will increase. However, competition will increase as well, and this will cause the price of that industries product to fall.

c. Decrease Increase

d. Decrease Decrease

e. Decrease No change

. A firm is a competitive seller of output at a market price of $. The only resource required to create its product is labor, which is purchased competitively at a wage rate of $6 per hour. The last worker employed increases total output from 6 to 40 units per hour. What is the marginal revenue product for this worker?

a. $

b. $6

c. $1 (40-6)

d. $4

e. Indeterminable from the information given.

. A firm requires labor and capital to produce a given output. Labor costs$8 per hour, and capital costs $1 per hour. At the current output level, the marginal physical product of labor is 40 units and the marginal physical product of capital is 60 units. Which of the following actions would this firm undertake to minimize its production costs at the current level of output?

Labor Capital

a. Increase Increase

b. Increase Decrease

c. Decrease Increase

d. Decrease No change

e. No change No change (40/8)= (60/1), thus MP labor = MP of capital and costs are minimized

4. Which of the following statements correctly describe(s) a firm that is a monopsonistic employer of labor?

I. The firm determines its level of labor employment by equating the marginal revenue product of labor with its marginal resource cost.

II. The firm pays a wage that is equal to the marginal revenue product of labor.

III. The firms labor supply curve is more elastic than the labor supply curve of a competitive employer.

a. I only. MRP= MRC holds true for competitive and monopsonistic models, thus statement I is correct. Statement II is incorrect for the monoposonistic model because the employer, being a monopoly, can control the wage rate. Statement III is also false because a monopsonistic firm has a supply curve that is equally elastic as every other firm.

b. II only.

c. III only.

d. I and II only.

e. I, II and III.

5. In a competitive industry, suppose the marginal revenue product of the last donut baker hired is $5, the marginal revenue product of the last bagel baker hired is $15, and a bakery must pay donut bakers $40 a day and bagel bakers $10 a day. The bakery should hire which of the following in order to maximize profits?

a. More donut bakers and fewer bagel bakers.

b. Fewer donut bakers and more bagel bakers. Profits are maximized when the MRP (labor)= 1, thus in this example, the MRP (donut bakers) must equal 1 and the MRP (bagel bakers = 1. Currently, the firm is paying its last donut baker more than his MRP, and is paying the last bagel baker less than his MRP, thus the firm must hire fewer donut bakers and more bagel bakers, to maximize profits.

c. Fewer of both donut bakers and bagel bakers.

d. More of both donut bakers and bagel bakers.

e. It is currently hiring the right number of donut bakers and bagel bakers.

6. Although statistical data show that broadcasting revenues exceed the profits of most professional sports teams, thus suggesting that these teams could not operate profitably without broadcasting revenues, an economist concluded that this overstates the importance of broadcasting for team owners profits. How can the concept of economic rent be used to explain this conclusion?

a. If there were no broadcasting, team owners would not have to rent TV lines and their costs would be lower.

b. If the owners had to pay economic rent to players, they could never make a profit without broadcasting revenues.

c. If there were no broadcasting revenues, players salaries would not include as much economic rent, and the team owners costs would be lower. Broadcasting revenues represent a surplus to team owners. Thus, if broadcasting did not exist, the owner would not have to pay his players as much economic rent, because there salaries would be lower, and his costs would derease.

d. Without broadcasting, owners could operate as monopolies instead of competitors and collect enough economic rent to overcome the loss of TV revenues.

e. If there were no games broadcast, owners could charge more for tickets and increase the total amount of economic rent they receive.

Gender issues have been a popular topic in literature for centuries. Authors of both genders have used this theme to address the role of men and women in the culture and time period they represent. Much of Alice Munro's work addresses theses issues in several aspects such as work and work divided by gender. Her 168 short story "Boys and Girls" demonstrates this theme using several different motifs and symbols. The most predominant being the horses, Mack and Flora who embody the attributes the central character/narrator wish to have herself.

The story is told through the eyes of a young girl living on a farm with her family somewhere in Canada probably around the time the country was first colonized. In those days the only role a women played in the world, except for a select few, was that of caretaker, cook and cleaning lady. The narrator is seemingly oblivious to these ideals and rejects the people who impose them on her. This is evident thorough the descriptions she gives of her mother. For example, on page 118 she gives her perspective on a discussion she overheard between her parents

She was plotting now to get me to stay in the house more, although she knew I hated it (because she knew I hated it) and keep me from working for my father.

At the time the narrator obviously wasn't aware that men and women had certain roles on society ;which is why she feels that her mother is trying to punish her in some way by wanting her to work more in the house and less outdoors with her father. The distinction between doing a "man's work" with her father and doing what her gender is "supposed" to with her mother is unclear to her. However, later on she realizes that her biological make-up does come along with certain responsibilities. On page 11 we see the narrators revelation Custom writing service can write essays on Motifs in Short Stories

The word girl had formerly seemed to me innocent and unburdened, like the word child ; now it appeared that it was no such thing. A girl was not, as I had supposed, simply what I was; it was what I had to become. It was a definition touched by emphasis, with reproach and disappointment.

This excerpt is then followed by dialog of her grandmother scolding her about what girls should and shouldn't do. We then see a conscious effort to rebel against her fate as a female.

Strangely enough, almost every paragraph that deals with the gender issues is followed by one concerning the horses, Mack and Flora. According to the narrator, Flora, the female is a wild, rambunctious creature while Mack is quite the opposite slow and boring. She obviously sees characteristics in Flora that she, herself would like to have. Alice Munro makes this even more obvious by telling the reader that each child (the narrator and her brother) have a bond with each horse, the narrator with the female and her brother with the male. The narrator even comments on how slow and clumsy her brother, traits that Mack has himself further proving her connection to Flora. The climax of the story takes place when the young girl lets Flora run through the gate to escape her fate as a horse; symbolizing her desire to escape her fate as a female. Which ultimately relates to the theme of the story, that being gender roles and challenging the standards set upon women. Unfortunately in the end Flora does not escape her fate and neither does our protagonist. Her father finds out about her disobedience and says on page 17

"Never mind," my father said. He spoke with resignation, even good humor, the words which absolved and dismissed me for good. "She's only a girl," he said. I didn't protest that, even in my heart. Maybe it was true.

One could argue that she does not ultimately accept the restrictions her gender holds. Yet I feel that there is no evidence saying that she doesn't. The horses being the main motif and the female horse exemplifying her desires and not escaping what life had planned out, clearly says that the narrator took the same path. While the story did challenge the way women are looked at in society, I think "Boys and Girls" was not meant to be an inspirational story for women but one that has us telling ourselves to not accept and reinforce pre-conceived notions about women and their role in society.

Poems are words expressing what is inside us. It is also well known that the environment around us affects the way we view things, and it is the factor that pushes us to act and rebel in a certain way.

In my research about this topic I came upon many names and characters that were shaped environment. Two of these are Maya Angelou and Tupac Shakur. Maya Angelou conquer the notion of rebellion from three specific and popular subject positions that of a woman, a black, and a black woman.

She is a poet, historian, author, actress, playwright, civil-rights activist, producer and director. She has been published ten best selling books and numerous magazine articles earning her Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award nominations. At the request of President Clinton, she wrote and delivered a poem at his 1 presidential inauguration. Maya was born in St. Louis and raised in a segregated rural Arkansas.

Her poetry is full of experience her childhood and adolescence years back in Arkansas. The style that she opted for is a rebellion style defending her race from the criticism that she is exposed to.

Help with essay on 2PAC

"Still I rise" is one of her most famous poems. In it she describes the basic feelings and descriptions of the women that don't need any hatred to try to lift them up. Basically, she shows that women in general, as well, as her, are strong.

In the poem, she writes about all the thoughts that people have against her, and how she won't let them put her down. She also describes from her prospective as a black woman how she has risen through all that she and her ancestors has gone through. They were put down by being forced to be slaves.

She always carries herself as a strong black woman. Her ancestors dreams was always to have someone brave and educated to sacrifice his or her time and maybe life to protect them. Maya Angeloo in my openion was that person that they dreamed of. She writes

"You may write me down in history

With your bitter, twisted lies,

You may trod me in the very dirt

But still, like dust, Ill rise. "

she also says

"You may shoot me with your words,

You may cut me with your eyes,

You may kill me with your hatefulness,

But still, like air, Ill rise. "

And she ends her poem by

"Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,

I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise"

I also came across more writers who were also affected by their environment. One of them is the controversial artist Tupac Shakur. He was born on June 16th, 171 .he is popular among all sections of the population. He is a superstar because he was incredibly talented but also because he took the side of the poor, because he represented the spirit of the LA Rebellion and he spread that spirit throughout society. He was the first prominent figure to defend women on welfare"Keep Ya Head Up" after he knew that nearly ,000 women were arrested during the LA Rebellion. In this song he defends women in the face of abandonment, beating, rape, and government neglect.

He makes a song with the same name as Maya's poem (Still I Rise). In it he describes himself from when he was still a seed of semen swimming upstream in his mother's womb. He talked about how he was stranded on welfare and how he comes from a broken family. He then raised a question "Now, what was I to be?" He went on answering his own question on how he survived the harsh living by turning to an illegal lifestyle. In another song he was talking about the changes that should be made in order to destroy the wall of racism in the society. He talked about important issues; poverty, inequality and education. He says

"I see no changes. I wake up in the morning and I ask myself is life worth living should I blast myself?

I'm tired of being poor and even worse I'm black

my stomach hurts so I'm looking for a purse to snatch."

In this verse he is talking about the poverty and how he wakes up every morning depressed and stressed about his income. He then continues to say that even though he is poor it did not affect him as much as his blackness affected him. He goes on to accuse the government for all what is happening. He blames government for promoting drugs in the poor neighborhoods and opening gun and liquor stores in the same places. Now he changes the subject to education and educating people and taking the evil out of their hearts. He says all the evil is happening because people judge each other by their skin color and that they are being superficial. He is saying that the same two groups, black and white, come together at some occasions. Therefore, they should work all together as a people to make these occasions occur more often. He continues to say that there are many blacks serving time in jail.

Throughout his life Tupac struggles to find his identity. He is the son of a radical political activist and a gangster living his early life as an outcast. As a rapper and movie star he lives what he described as 'Thug Life' - a life of rebellion. Tupac is a symbol of black resistance, of anger, violence and bitterness, a voice that speaks out against some of the things wrong in America in the 10's

There are so many questions I had to answer to defend my position. First of all, the subject matter of my topic is not strange to any American since women and blacks have faced discrimination for a long period of time. Secondly, the life they live (Maya and Tupac) reflects exactly what they had to go through to reach their goals. Even after becoming famous their style of writing does not change because they believe that their writings would make an impact in the society.

My arguments I chose in this research paper make sense to me by helping me picture myself in their situations and given me insight on comparing modern day America with their generations. In the Tupac case, the generation is not too different from now and the experience, if we can still exists.

Rebellion is a double edged sword. It can change a lot of problems in the society but it can also harm the writer like in the case of Tupac. He rebelled until he is shot dead.

We have discussed the concept of rebellion in poetry. We have seen how Maya Angeloo and tupac shakur in their writing to convey a certain message. We also see how rebellion can be positive trough writing, but also negative. Such as in the case of tupac's murder.

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) - What is it?

Digital Subscriber Line or DSL for short, is a modem-like technology that allows for the transmission of voice, video and data over existing telephone lines at megabit speeds.

DSL services uses the high frequency spectrum on the same lines that deliver voice service to home and business users. This means that both voice and data can run simultaneously without the need for additional phone lines or other connections to the ISP.

DSL AdvantagesCustom writing service can write essays on DSL

The great thing about DSL is it uses the unused bandwidth that already exists on your phone line. Your phone service will continue to operate the same way as it did before DSL was installed. This means you can surf the Internet and still be able to pick up the phone and make a phone call, and all on a single phone line.

Speed

What you here Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) solutions offer the user data speeds of up to 50 times the rate of a traditional analog 8.8 Kbps modem.

What you get It depends on how close you live to your telco and how much you are willing to pay for bandwidth. In general, with basic DSL service you will be able to download a 5MB file in under 1.5 minutes. Now thats Fast..

Reliability

Phone company networks are among the most reliable in the world, experiencing only minutes of downtime each year.

Convenience

Since your DSL connection is always on. Theres no need to dial-up and wait for a connection every time you want to do something online. You will also never experience line dropping when youre in the middle of browsing or downloading.

Types of DSL

xDSL is used interchangeably with the acronym DSL to describe all the different variations of the technology. Basically they all fall into one of two categories Asymmetric DSL and Symmetric DSL.

Home and Residential - Asymmetrical DSL

Asymmetric DSL (ADSL) reserves more bandwidth going downstream to the user and less going upstream. Asymmetric DSL works by using more bandwidth for downloads to the user and less bandwidth for uploads from the user to the Internet. This is more attractive to Internet surfers because they typically download much more data than they send.

Business - Symmetric DSL

Unlike Asymmetric DSL, Symmetric DSL provides the same bandwidth for both downstream and upstream data. Because of the larger bandwidth (and cost) requirements, it is more suited for Web servers, corporate networks, and those who send out large quantities of data.

Choosing an Internet Service Provider

This will most likely be the hardest decision you will have to make when deciding on DSL service. There are so many different providers competing for your business, how can you possibly make a decision.

In general remember the following Local ISPs usually have better pricing than the National ISPs. Also, Local ISPs can sometimes give you better bandwidth speeds. On the other hand, National ISPs usually have better technical support, larger service areas and special promotional offers.

Conclusion Shop around before you buy.

DSL Hardware Information

At minimum you will need a DSL modem and network card. Most ISPs will provide the modem for free if you sign up for at least one year of service. Network cards are inexpensive and can be purchased as kits to network multiple computers together. For more than two computer, they can all be connected to one DSL modem using a router or firewall/router combination.

Security Concerns

If you create a home network to connect multiple computers and/or share your broadband Internet connection, you should consider installing a network firewall, especially if you have enabled file and print sharing on your home LAN. A network firewall is a separate hardware device that creates a security barrier between your network and the Internet. Be sure the firewall you choose offers stateful packet inspection the strongest form of security for small networks.

Technologies Comparisons

How does DSL stack up against other broadband technologies. The following information will show you the pros and cons vs. DSL broadband. Hopefully this will help you decide what broadband technology is best for you.

DSL vs. Analog (dial-up) modems

Analog modems have reached their technical limit using the V.0 technology. It is possible to bond or shotgun two 56K modems together for more bandwidth (up to 11K). However, you will still need an extra phone line. When you consider the costs for multiple lines and the extra ISP costs for shotgun access. Its cheaper, faster and more reliable to chose another broadband option.

DSL vs. Cable modems

Cable modems offer high-bandwidth Internet access over cable TV lines, the service is reliable, and service costs are close to that of most DSL. Cable modems are used primarily for home and residential Internet access because most commercial and business buildings arent usually wired for cable television service.

With a cable modem, you are sharing access to the Internet, unlike DSL which runs on a dedicated connection. The downside of shared access is security. Hackers may be able to break into other computers on the same cable network.

Also, as more users in a neighborhood send and receive information, the available bandwidth for individual users shrink, potentially slowing bandwidth speeds down to a crawl.

DSL vs. Satellite access

DBS service requires a small dish, mounted outdoors to receive data sent from a stationary satellite. DBS service providers can deliver download speeds approaching 50 kilobits per second.

The downside is that satellite services are receive-only. You still need a phone line and modem to request (upload) information from the Internet.

DSL vs. ISDN

ISDN is a widely available, faster alternative to analog modems. Its not as fast as DSL, Cable or Satellite and it cost -5 times more. If your area does not offer any of the other high-bandwidth options, ISDN is the only way you will be able to break the 56K barrier.

Conclusion

In most areas, only one or two of these technologies are available. If your lucky enough to live in an area that has all the options. Shop around, talk to people, and find out what kind of speeds they have experienced based on what the theoretical maximum can be. Also remember to check the technical support service and options when deciding on a provider. If you cant get a hold of anyone concerning technical issues, it doesnt make a difference how fast the service is.

Claude Oscar Monet was born in Paris on November 14,1840. When Monet was a child his family moved to Le Havre. Monet did not take schooling very seriously and so began to draw caricature in the margins of his books. He became good at this and was soon creating caricature pictures of the townspeople and shop owners in and around Le Havre. In 1858 he met up with Eugene Boudin who encouraged the young Monet to expand beyond caricature. The younger artist soon saw the wisdom in Boudins words and began exploring nature and its colors and forms. Monets family moved to the port town of Le Havre in 1845.

He took his early art lessons from the painter, Eugene Boudin. Boudin, who worked up sketches of out doors, encouraged Monet to do the same. Though Boudin was never a highly regarded artist, he played a very important in Monets artistic career. After some time, Monet and Boudin had formed a friendship that would last a lifetime. in 1857

his mother Louise Monet died. And Monet tries to commit suicide. Monet moved to Paris in 185 and In 1871 settled in Agential. He fixed up a boat, and painted his way up and down the Seine River, capturing his impressions of the interplay of light, water and atmosphere meeting new people and heavily socializing for the first time in his life. During the franco prussian war 1870 he took refuge in England, and he studied the work of Constable and Turner, painted the Thames and London parks, and met the dealer Durand-Ruel, who was to become one of the great champions of the Impressionists. In 1878 he moved to Vtheuil and in 188 he settled at Giverny, also on the Seine, but about 40 miles from Paris. After having experienced extreme poverty, Monet began to prosper. By 180 he was successful enough to buy the house at Giverny he had previously rented and in 18 he married his mistress Alice , with whom he had begun an affair in 1876, three years before the death of his first wife. 188 Monet settled at Giverny where he created a magnificent garden. This garden was the inspiration for most of his later work and inspired the series Water Lilies and the Japanese Bridge (begun in 18). In 111 his wife alice dies of unknown reasons. As age and bad eyesight descended upon the artist his works lost almost all sense of form and are now referred to as Abstract Impressionism. Czanne once said that Monet was only an eye, but my God, what an eye. Monet died on December 5 16 of cancer because he smoked a lot , and he nearly blind when he passed .He was known to have said that he feared the dark more than death". His artwork still lives on today in museums all over the world. Monet was one of the greatest artists of all time he will be remembered for years to come. I really enjoy Monet work. This spring I am taking a little trip to Washington D.C to see some sites and after reading up on Monet life I think I might pay a visit to the art museum and see his work in person. I believe that museum hold the most famous work of his life. That is of his most famous works of the Impressionist movement. Like (London Houses Of Parliament) and Sunset in Venice and Water Lily Pool. Monet worked endlessly on this project from around 100 until his death.

Carnivora

Carnivora is the order that includes lions, tigers, wolves, dogs, cats, raccoons, bears, weasels, hyenas, seals, and walruses, to name just a few. Most carnivores are land animals, but an important and highly specialized group of carnivores, the pinnipeds or fin-feet, have taken up life in the oceans; pinnipeds include seals, sea lions, and walruses. A few other carnivores, such as the sea otter, are also specialized for life in the oceans. Around 70 species are among the living Carnivora. They are distributed across the world, in all major land masses (except possibly Australia, where the only terrestrial Carnivora, the dingo, may have been brought by man) and in all oceans, with the exception Antarctica and small islands. Places such as Antarctica are to cold and scarce of food for animals in the order of Carnivora to survive.

Most members of the Order Carnivora can be recognized by their enlarged fourth upper premolar and first lower molar, which together form an efficient shear for cutting meat and tendon. These teeth are referred to as the carnassial pair. The exceptions are a few forms, such as bears, raccoons, and seals, in which these teeth are secondarily modified.

Carnivores tend to be medium-sized animals; too small and they couldnt find enough within their capacity to kill; too large and they wouldnt be able to satisfy their appetites. Most have very acute senses. Vision and hearing are excellent in many carnivores, and the sense of smell is often remarkable. Most have relatively large brains. Many are excellent runners. A few are good long-distance runners, but more commonly, Carnivora are rapid sprinters that use stealth to approach their prey, and then overcome it with a short, violent rush. A few, like bears and raccoons, seem relatively slow or clumsy, but even these species are capable of remarkable bursts of speed. Even the long-distance runners dont have the highly modified and relatively inflexible skeletons and movement patterns of cursorily herbivores like artiodactyls; this is probably related to the often unpredictable demands that catching and killing large prey place on their skeletons.Cheap custom writing service can write essays on carnivora

In proportion to their body size, carnivores have large head and well developed cerebral hemispheres which control the intelligent behavior needed for hunting. Their senses are efficient, enabling the animal first to locate prey at a distance and then to guide the attack. Carnivores have a fine sense of smell (Nasua narica), important for both trailing prey and for communication. Scent released from the anal and other glands conveys information about an animals identity, sex and territorial ownership.

Most carnivores breed only once a year, although a few species (weasels) breed only every two or three years. Most species have a gestation period of 50 to 115 days. Delayed implantation of the fertilized egg occurs in ursids and some mustelids, so the period from mating to birth is considerably longer than average. Litters vary in size from single offspring in bears to 1 or more in skunks and wild dogs. The young are usually blind at birth, completely helpless, covered with hair and are necessarily dependant on parental care for up to two years. In captivity some carnivores have been known to live for up to 0 years.

Human relationships with the Carnivora are extremely varied. On the one hand, dogs and cats have been domesticated for thousands of years. Many carnivores, such as mink, seal, fox, and bobcat, have long been hunted or ranched for their fur. Other carnivores benefit humans by killing pests such as snakes and rodents, or by consuming carrion. However, the reputation of many large carnivores as predators on man or on livestock a false or highly exaggerated reputation, in most cases has been used to justify unrestricted hunting. Hunting and trapping of wild carnivores for fur, and the destruction of habitats around the world have also contributed towards bringing many carnivore species to extinction or to the brink of extinction.

As their habitats dwindle and populations become more fragile, the fate of the many species of carnivore is totally in human hands. We must decide if we are willing to make the sacrifices necessary to save these strikingly beautiful creatures.
