Claude Oscar Monet was born in Paris on November 14,1840. When Monet was a child his family moved to Le Havre. Monet did not take schooling very seriously and so began to draw caricature in the margins of his books. He became good at this and was soon creating caricature pictures of the townspeople and shop owners in and around Le Havre. In 1858 he met up with Eugene Boudin who encouraged the young Monet to expand beyond caricature. In 1878 he moved to V�theuil and in 188 he settled at Giverny, also on the Seine, but about 40 miles from Paris. After having experienced extreme poverty, Monet began to prosper. By 180 he was successful enough to buy the house at Giverny he had previously rented and in 18 he married his mistress Alice , with whom he had begun an affair in 1876, three years before the death of his first wife. 188 Monet settled at Giverny where he created a magnificent garden. This garden was the inspiration for most of his later work and inspired the series Water Lilies and the Japanese Bridge (begun in 18). In 111 his wife alice dies of unknown reasons. As age and bad eyesight descended upon the artist his works lost almost all sense of form and are now referred to as Abstract Impressionism. C�zanne once said that Monet was only an eye, but my God, what an eye. Monet died on December 5 16 of cancer because he smoked a lot , and he nearly blind when he passed .He was known to have said that he feared the dark more than death".
