Poems are words expressing what is inside us. It is also well known that the environment around us affects the way we view things, and it is the factor that pushes us to act and rebel in a certain way.

In my research about this topic I came upon many names and characters that were shaped environment. Two of these are Maya Angelou and Tupac Shakur. Maya Angelou conquer the notion of rebellion from three specific and popular subject positions that of a woman, a black, and a black woman.

She is a poet, historian, author, actress, playwright, civil-rights activist, producer and director. She has been published ten best selling books and numerous magazine articles earning her Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award nominations. At the request of President Clinton, she wrote and delivered a poem at his 1 presidential inauguration. Maya was born in St. Louis and raised in a segregated rural Arkansas.

Her poetry is full of experience her childhood and adolescence years back in Arkansas. The style that she opted for is a rebellion style defending her race from the criticism that she is exposed to.

"Still I rise" is one of her most famous poems. In it she describes the basic feelings and descriptions of the women that don't need any hatred to try to lift them up. Basically, she shows that women in general, as well, as her, are strong.

In the poem, she writes about all the thoughts that people have against her, and how she won't let them put her down. She also describes from her prospective as a black woman how she has risen through all that she and her ancestors has gone through. They were put down by being forced to be slaves.

She always carries herself as a strong black woman. Her ancestors dreams was always to have someone brave and educated to sacrifice his or her time and maybe life to protect them. Maya Angeloo in my openion was that person that they dreamed of. She writes

"You may write me down in history

With your bitter, twisted lies,

You may trod me in the very dirt

But still, like dust, Ill rise. "

she also says

"You may shoot me with your words,

You may cut me with your eyes,

You may kill me with your hatefulness,

But still, like air, Ill rise. "

And she ends her poem by

"Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,

I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise"

I also came across more writers who were also affected by their environment. One of them is the controversial artist Tupac Shakur. He was born on June 16th, 171 .he is popular among all sections of the population. He is a superstar because he was incredibly talented but also because he took the side of the poor, because he represented the spirit of the LA Rebellion and he spread that spirit throughout society. He was the first prominent figure to defend women on welfare"Keep Ya Head Up" after he knew that nearly ,000 women were arrested during the LA Rebellion. In this song he defends women in the face of abandonment, beating, rape, and government neglect.

He makes a song with the same name as Maya's poem (Still I Rise). In it he describes himself from when he was still a seed of semen swimming upstream in his mother's womb. He talked about how he was stranded on welfare and how he comes from a broken family. He then raised a question "Now, what was I to be?" He went on answering his own question on how he survived the harsh living by turning to an illegal lifestyle. In another song he was talking about the changes that should be made in order to destroy the wall of racism in the society. He talked about important issues; poverty, inequality and education. He says

"I see no changes. I wake up in the morning and I ask myself is life worth living should I blast myself?

I'm tired of being poor and even worse I'm black

my stomach hurts so I'm looking for a purse to snatch."

In this verse he is talking about the poverty and how he wakes up every morning depressed and stressed about his income. He then continues to say that even though he is poor it did not affect him as much as his blackness affected him. He goes on to accuse the government for all what is happening. He blames government for promoting drugs in the poor neighborhoods and opening gun and liquor stores in the same places. Now he changes the subject to education and educating people and taking the evil out of their hearts. He says all the evil is happening because people judge each other by their skin color and that they are being superficial. He is saying that the same two groups, black and white, come together at some occasions. Therefore, they should work all together as a people to make these occasions occur more often. He continues to say that there are many blacks serving time in jail.

Throughout his life Tupac struggles to find his identity. He is the son of a radical political activist and a gangster living his early life as an outcast. As a rapper and movie star he lives what he described as 'Thug Life' - a life of rebellion. Tupac is a symbol of black resistance, of anger, violence and bitterness, a voice that speaks out against some of the things wrong in America in the 10's

There are so many questions I had to answer to defend my position. First of all, the subject matter of my topic is not strange to any American since women and blacks have faced discrimination for a long period of time. Secondly, the life they live (Maya and Tupac) reflects exactly what they had to go through to reach their goals. Even after becoming famous their style of writing does not change because they believe that their writings would make an impact in the society.

My arguments I chose in this research paper make sense to me by helping me picture myself in their situations and given me insight on comparing modern day America with their generations. In the Tupac case, the generation is not too different from now and the experience, if we can still exists.

Rebellion is a double edged sword. It can change a lot of problems in the society but it can also harm the writer like in the case of Tupac. He rebelled until he is shot dead.

We have discussed the concept of rebellion in poetry. We have seen how Maya Angeloo and tupac shakur in their writing to convey a certain message. We also see how rebellion can be positive trough writing, but also negative. Such as in the case of tupac's murder.
