Electricity

Electricity has given us so many things; one thing electricity has played a major part in are sporting events. Without Electricity there would be no television. Another thing Cars would not be the travel machines they are to us in today's society. Electricity has brought the most far reaching and lasting changes to civilization because of, sporting events, television, and cars.

Without electricity sporting events would not be the same. One thing that would not be possible without electricity is the jumbotron or as some call it the scoreboard. Without electricity we would not be able to see ourselves up there during commercials, we would not be able to see slow motion dunks in replay. Without electricity it would not be possible to see the score from anywhere in the building. Without electricity our games would be limited; we would still have games, although we would not be able to have night games or sometimes even dome games, because of the bad weather. Without electricity we would not be able to have; cameras catching all the action that goes on in our sporting events. We could not see things like espn; because of no electricity they could not use cameras at the games. Sporting events are not the only reason that electricity was the best discovery.

Without electricity there would be no television or radio.

Write your Electricity research paper

We would not be able to watch the shows we love so much.

They would not be able to make the shows because they would have no place to plug up the cameras. With no electricity we would have no way of knowing the news and the weather, because of no electricity we would have to wait weeks for someone to write a letter and then mail it. If there were no electricity we would not be able to listen our precious music that we all love so much; they would not be able to get the computers on at radio stations. Television and radio are not the only reasons electricity is the greatest discovery.

With no electricity our cars would not be the great travel machines they are to us today. If there were no electricity then we would not have lights in our cars and, not be able to see the road. Without electricity cars would not run the way they do; we could not have the speed cars we have on the road. The cars will not have the electric currents that they have going through them. If there were no electricity then we would not have the special things we have in our cars like G.P.S. or global positioning system. With out electricity we would not have televisions that would help us on long drives or just going across town.

Electricity has brought the most far reaching and lasting changes to civilization because of, sporting events, television, and cars. In conclusion without electricity our society would be in the stone ages; and have none of the things we enjoy like night sporting events, television, and cars.

1 Introduction

1.1 Definitions & Report Coverage

This report examines the background and strategies of Chinas leading domestic brands. The brands are ranked by their values in the marketplace and represent some of the major household names in China many of which have the potential to become global brands. This report includes only wholly domestic brands and not successful foreign brands in China such as Coca-Cola, VW or Kodak, etc.

1. Executive Summary

The concept of brand value, or brand equity, is still relatively new in China. Indeed the government has only been measuring company worth in terms of brand value for seven years.

As local brands have increasingly had to both compete with each other for consumers attention and face competition from foreign brands so the growing importance of advertising has come to be realised. At first Chinese brands appeared only to understand the concept of saturation advertising. However, advertising is now becoming increasingly sophisticated and targeted.

The need to better target the consumer has been a hallmark of many successful brands whether it be Legends range of affordable computers with bundled software, Hongqis better designed vehicles or Erdos closer attention to garment design. All the major brands have successfully made the shift from the state command economy to a more market-oriented economy.

Typical of this process within the leading brands is Ni Runfeng, the CEO of Changhong Electronics (the third biggest brand in China). Ni is still constantly examining the Chinese consumer market closely and is a keen observer of social trends, now targeting the companys products at those families with an annual income exceeding RMB 0,000 per annum with living rooms of approximately 0 square metres. Ni believes that this analysis gives Changhong a potential market of ten million Chinese families with the number increasing annually. He is keen to improve the companys competitiveness and brand recognition against his two major domestic competitors ? TCL and Haier (number two and five brands in China respectively).

The need to expand overseas is also recognised by the senior managements of Chinas leading brands. For instance second placed Haiers CEO, Zhang Ruimin, has stated that in his view, the key to the Groups rapid growth will continue to rely on an internationalisation strategy, especially with the development of the Internet economy and Chinas pending entry into the WTO. Much of the companys success has been attributed to the companys CEO, Zhang Ruimin, who has been applauded both at home and abroad for his creative leadership and corporate management practices. The Group has employed the OEC management model to its market chains, and has progressed from being a borrower of ideas into becoming a successful innovator in business development.

While a brand like Haier has started to earn a reputation abroad in its own right, other leading Chinese brands have become suppliers overseas, though these brands may not be instantly recognised. An example of this is Erdos, the cashmere company from Inner Mongolia. Erdos has been superb at developing reasonably priced cashmere garments for the domestic and international market. Globally, department stores now carry reasonably priced cashmere sweaters as do the large US mail-order catalogues, such as Lands End and LL Bean. These sweaters are mostly Chinese made and mostly by Erdos.

New product innovation is also a hallmark of many of the leading brands. This is true for the electronic appliance manufacturers as well as the pharmaceutical companies and automobile makers. Though this is more difficult for a long-standing brand with little scope for innovation such as Hongtashan cigarettes, other brands that have been around a long time have found ways to innovate. For instance Erdos, Chinas largest cashmere garment manufacturer is working on a range of new products to suit the changing global market. These include un-dyed ecologically sound products, products that can be hand washed, cashmere and silk blends, stretchable cashmere, beans cashmere (which is blended with fibres produced from beans) and new superior quality cashmere range under the Super Erdos brand.

There is also an element of succeeding in the market through longevity. Hongtashan cigarettes, the single most valuable brand in China, is an example of this. There is little scope for product innovation (though some rivals such as Double Happiness have introduced esoft packs in recent years). However, longevity and beating the foreign competition are crucial elements to brand success in China.

1. Overview of Chinas Leading Brands

Hongtashan, the Chinese leading cigarette brand, is the most valuable brand in China in terms of revenues. The cigarette brand is found throughout the country and smoked at all levels of society. Unlike some sectors the foreign brands have found problems in China on two fronts. Firstly, access to the market has been severely limited by the national tobacco monopoly, and secondly, despite low prices and extensive marketing and advertising campaigns, the vast majority of Chinese smokers have remained loyal to local brands.

Hongtashan has managed to maintain widespread sales despite being priced at approximately RMB 14. They are popular gift items in carton form still. The company has matched western standards of production and packaging and has widespread distribution as well as a well-known pack design.

However, apart from some sales to overseas Chinese communities, Chinese tobacco brands including Hongtashan, have not managed to win overseas markets. This is not so true of the second largest brand in China, Haier, an electrical appliances manufacturer, that has expanded into markets as diverse as Egypt, the USA and Pakistan. Haier is a massive advertiser in China and its etwo boys logo is universally known. Haier is also seen as a quality brand and one of the few electrical appliance manufacturers in China able to compete with Japanese brands on quality. The company has also diversified out from refrigerator manufacturer into a wide range of appliances including air conditioners, mobile phones, PCs and TV sets etc, allowing the company to tap into the growing taste of Chinese consumers for ebig ticket items.

Like Haier, TCL has diversified from its origins as a phone manufacturer to produce all manner of brown and white goods.

Two beer brands are prominent in the league table. Primary among them is Tsingtao, which remains Chinas best selling beer despite competition from a range of imported foreign beers. The company has acquired a host of smaller regional beers to expand nationwide and has found strong overseas sales, including in Europe and America, through Chinese restaurants. Beijing Yanjing is also a major beer brand, though still overshadowed by Tsingtao.

Changhong Electronics enterprise (a former state-run military-radar factory) located in Sichuan Province. Changhong is based in Mianyang -known as Chinas Television City. The company produces some . million television sets annually and claims a 40% share of the domestic market. In the Chinese press Changhong is often referred to as Chinas Matsushita. Changhong has expanded overseas and established R&D centres in China, Europe and the USA. The company is known for its highly specific marketing plans focusing on the interior and northeastern regions of the country where the potential market was deemed largest and competition weakest. Ni won consumer confidence with a strategy of low return rates, good quality control and heightened after-sales service as well as introducing TVs with remote controls and other additional features. Now the company is concentrating on the Yangzi River Basin area and in Southern China where foreign competition was significantly stronger. In this region Changhong was the first to introduce -inch TV sets.

Legend is at the top of its annual list of Chinas top 100 electronics companies and finds itself in the fast growing PC market in Asia. Legend has the production capability to manufacture three million motherboards and 1.5 million PCs annually. Legend has also started producing palm top computers that provide cost-free access to a news service. At present the company maintains a market share of approximately 0% of Chinas PC market and 1-14% of the total Asia-Pacific market (excluding Japan).

It should be noted that Chinas major brands, despite access to a massive population and growing incomes, are still small by global standards. All 500 brands listed on the most recent Fortune Magazine list of global brand values had turnovers in excess of US$ 10. billion. Contrastingly, the five leading brands in China combined have a turnover of under US$ 5 billion.

It is estimated that it will take at least twenty to thirty years for Chinas leading brands to catch up with the Fortune 500 brands ? Even at a growth rate of 0% per annum. It is also noted that product innovation is largely lacking among the major brands. Patents for new inventions are few and far between reflecting a lack of innovation and technological backwardness.

Understanding the importance of moral order is essential to the

full comprehension behind Shakespeare's ideas in the play Hamlet.

Moral order in plain definition can be understood as the presence of

good and the absence of evil in the manner the world works. Claudius,

Do my essay on moral order CHEAP !

the antagonist in the play, being the main source of evil, uses various

characters in his plans and through his actions causes the characters as

well as Hamlet to fall subject to this evil. Ultimately, disturbing moral

order by all the deaths and suffering created. Therefore, it is evident

that A. C. Bradley's is accurate in stating that moral order is the

ultimate power in the play, and shows itself to be true through the

inevitable demise of those characters which took part in disturbing it.

According to A.C. Bradley, "In Shakespearean tragedy the main

source of convulsion which produces suffering and death is never good…

The main source, on the contrary, is in every case evil; and what is more

(though this seems to have been little noticed), it is in the almost every

case evil in the fullest sense, mot mere imperfection but plain moral

evil." This quotation becomes evident in the examination of the

opening scenes when the characters realize that all is not well in

Denmark and that there is definitely something disturbed seeing as how

ghosts only wander the night to complete unfinished business.

When Hamlet states, "My father's spirit in arms! all is not

well; /I doubt some foul play would the night were come! /Till then sit

still, my soul. Foul deeds will rise, / Through all the earth o'erwhelm

them, to men's eyes." (Act 1, Scene lines 5-56), he has a strong feeling

that something is not correct with his father's death. Marcellus has also

come to a conclusion when he states, "Something is rotten in the

state of Denmark." (Act 1, Scene 4 line 0) This quotation is a definite

realization that there is corruption because of some cause, both

politically and morally. The only unknown fact at this point would be

the reason of this disturbance. The last half of A. C. Bradley's quotation

can be directly associated to Claudius in that he is plain moral evil. He

shows this through the manner in which he conceived the throne.

Instead of fighting King Hamlet Sr. honourably, he kills his brother, in a

cowardly manner, by pouring poison in his ear while he was sleeping.

Claudius is evil in the fullest sense because he shows little remorse for his

actions and refuses to give up his throne and queen. Rather, he uses

other characters like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, as ponds in an

attempt to keep what he has gained thus far.

A.C. Bradley furthermore provides a perfect description of

Claudius' character when he states, "Evil exhibits itself everywhere as

something negative, barren, weakening, destructive, a principle of death.

It Isolates, disunites, and tends to annihilate not only its opposite but

itself." The fact that evil is weakening, destructive, isolates, disunites,

etc. is seen directly through the breakdown of the main source of evil,

Claudius, and indirectly through his victims. Claudius directly affected

himself and Hamlet by means of his murderous and incestuous actions.

His evil causes Hamlet to put on antic- disposition and appear evil.

A. C. Bradley goes on to state, "That which keeps the evil man

prosperous, makes him succeed, even permits him to exist, is the good in

him (I do not mean only the obvious "moral" good). When the evil in him

masters the good and has its way, it destroys other people through him,

but also destroys him." Claudius' manipulative manner is the "good" in

him that makes him prosperous and allows him to exist. He shows this

in many of his lines but primarily in Act 1, Scene , in his opening

address. This is the first time the reader is introduced to Claudius and it

can already be noticed that he is very manipulative in his speech. He

makes himself out to be the "sacrificed" one that had to marry his sister-

in-law and assume the throne just so that everything would appear

alright in Denmark. Manipulation is also seen when the King is

speaking to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern and states

I like him not, nor stands it safe with us

To let his madness range. Therefore prepare you;

I your commission will forthwith dispatch,

And he to England shall along with you

The terms of our estate may not endure

Hazard so dangerous as doth hourly grow

Out of his lunacies. (Act , Scene lines 1-7)

In this quotation, Claudius manipulates Rosencrantz and

Guildenstern to believe that the King (therefore the country) is in great

danger and that they must get rid of Hamlet. This is quite ironic given

the fact that Claudius is the real danger in the play and that through his

actions, he indirectly affected other characters. Hamlet's actions in

response to Claudius' evil, become consequential for characters like

Ophelia, Gertrude, Polonius, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, which only

find their deaths by the end of the play.

A. C. Bradley's final description of Claudius states, "At the close of

the struggle he has vanished, and has left behind him nothing that can

stand. What remains is … a country, exhausted, pale, and feeble, but

alive through the principle of good which animates it; and within it,

individuals who, if they have not the brilliance or greatness of the tragic

character, still have won our respect and confidence." Finally, after all

the chaos has occurred and moral order is restored through the deaths of

those which disturbed it, Claudius leaves behind him nothing that is

worth a great deal but what does shine through is the timely appearance

of the only character that has achieved his goal honourably. Fortinbras

is the savoir at the end of the play that will revive the frail city and

bring Denmark back to its moral and principled customs that seized to

exist once the murder of King Hamlet Sr. took place. Horatio can also

be seen as a horourable character that stood by Hamlet's side throughout

all the chaos and his phase of antic- disposition.

Hamlet is a tragic hero because he did contribute to his eventual

downfall, but cannot be seen as evil through his actions. A.C. Bradley

comments on this fact when he states, "Even when this plain moral evil

is not the obvious prime source within the play, it lies behind it the

situation with which Hamlet has to deal has been formed by adultery

and murder…" Hamlet was not evil but brought into evil

because he had to avenge his father's murder. Also, the fact that Hamlet

states

…God willing, shall not lack. Let us go in together;

And still your finger on your lips, I pray.

The time is out of joint; O cursed spite,

That ever I was born to set it right!-

Nay, come, let's go together." (Act 1, Scene 5 lines 188- 1)

shows that Hamlet was not keen on killing Claudius but it is his duty,

evil or not, to avenge his father's death. As a final point, A.C. Bradley

does not just blame the main source of evil but also the hero that in him

too has faults. He states, "Again, if we confine our attention to the hero,

and to those cases where the gross and palpable evil is not in him but

elsewhere, we find that the comparatively innocent hero still shows some

marked imperfection or defect… These defects or imperfections are

certainly, in the wide sense of the word, evil, and they contribute

decisively to the conflict and catastrophe." This statement is true

because it is Hamlet's faults which add to the conflict, disturbs moral

order and eventually brings about his demise. It was Hamlet's

incapability to perform tasks when they were due or irresolution that

was his biggest fault. He had the prime opportunity to kill Claudius

when he was praying but did not do it because he wanted Claudius to

suffer the ultimate punishment of hell. Hamlet thinks about things too

much and because of this he misses the chance to kill Claudius. This in

turn caused his impulsive reaction of killing Polonius, which he thought

was Claudius. It was these factors that made Hamlet fall subject to evil

but he himself was not evil. This evil in turn, caused him to disturb the

moral order and was restored with him unfortunate death. This once

more proves that moral order is the ultimate power.

In retrospect, A. C. Bradley's commentary on moral order being

the ultimate power and has proven itself through the annihilation of the

antagonist, Claudius, which originally disrupted the order and the other

characters like Hamlet, Gertrude, Ophelia, Polonius, Laertes,

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, which also through inevitable

Circumstances came into relation with the source of evil and caused

them also to disrupt the moral order. So in this play the disturbance of

the moral order is shown through the opposite of the actual definition;

the presence of evil and the absence of good. A. C. Bradley helps the

reader to understand that moral order does not act randomly

or without reason but rather because it has to be restored once disturbed.

Under no situation could the characters escape the restoration and

therefore this fact reinforces that moral order is, in the true sense, the

ultimate power.

Abstract

After the events of September 11, 001 the United States Government past several counters terrorism laws. The wording in the laws however is vague and unclear leaving lots of room for interpretation. In an attempt to stop domestic terrorism the government has taken our civil liberties from us as they see fit.

Introduction

The United States of America was founded on the belief that people have cretin God given rights that can not be taken away by anyone. In founding this Country our fore fathers took it a step further and gave the people of this Country rights on top of that (Bill of Rights). The Fourth Amendment to the Constitution states,

" The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the person or things to be seized"(United States Constitution).

This means that the Government can not pass a law that takes any of these things away from us but this has not been the case. Both the Homeland Security Act and the Patriot Act cross the line and take away rights given to the American people in the Constitution.

Statement of the Problem

There is a fear among the American people that counter terrorism acts approved by the Government post September 11, 0001, have infringed upon our civil liberties. The Government in haste to protect our Country from terrorism has forgotten what makes the

Denney

Country worth protecting in the first place. Rushing bill into laws to make it look like they are trying to solve the problem of terrorism. They should be taking their time and making good law that will actually salve the problem. It has been said time and time again after September 11, that the Government had the information it just was not given to the right people. So making laws that give the Government more power to intrude into peoples private affairs is not going to help prevent terrorist attacks.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of the study is to see how our civil liberties have been affected by the passing of counter terrorism laws after September 11, 001. Also to see what could be done to salve the problem of terrorism without sacrificing or freedoms.

Importance of study

This study will show what rights have been taken from us and for what purpose. It will also show what

could be done to prevent terrorism that is not being done.

Review of Literature

On Jun 6, 00 President Bush proposed to congress to create a new department of the government. Creating the Department of Homeland Security was the biggest reorganization of the government in Fifty years. The Department of Homeland Security has five main functions.

1. Information analysis and infrastructure protection.

. Chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and related countermeasures.

. Border and transportation inspection and security.

4. Emergency preparedness and response

Denney 5

5. Coordination with other parts of the Federal Government with state and local government and the private sector.

(Analysis for the Homeland Security Act of 00)

The secretary of Homeland Security is appointed by the president and then approved by the Senate. The secretary has full governmental power and authority to do what it takes to take care of business (Analysis for the Homeland Security Act). Senator Carl Levin had this to say about the new department,

"I am a strong supporter of creating a new department for homeland security, and was glad to be able to cosponsor the bipartisan legislation that passed out the Government Affairs Committee in July of this year. But this legislation, now, falls so short of the promise of that committee-passed bill, that I am compelled to vote no. The legislation the Senate will pass tonight has numerous unrelated and inappropriate special

Denney 6

interest provisions, omits numerous related and appropriate homeland security provisions, and fails to address probably the most central question to our security- the coordination and sharing of information between the CIA and the FBI"(Levin).

This coming from a strong supporter of the idea of having a department of homeland security. Levin goes on to say, "too many of the provisions have less to do with homeland security and more to do with access of special interests". Between 18 and 00 $11 million in donations was given federal candidates from private business (Ecologist). Section 41 of the homeland security act gives the department $50 million a year for 00-005. Hear are the other reports of spending on counter terrorism in other sectors.

The Homeland Security Act of 00 establishes the Department of Home land security. Their main mission being the prevention of terrorist attacks in the United States.

The Patriot Act passed two weeks after September 11 and was 48 pages long (Dohrn 10). Their for it is hard to believe that any one person new all of what was contained in the Act. The Patriot Act made it easer for the government to look into our private lives with surveillance and wire tapping. The Patriot Act use

Denney

terms like, "streamline surveillance and sneak and peak" and leaves much up to interpretation. The fallowing clip was taken directly from the Homeland Security Act.

(15) The term 'terrorism means any activity that--

(A) involves an act that--

(i) is dangerous to human life or potentially

destructive of critical infrastructure or key

resources; and

(ii) is a violation of the criminal laws of the United

States or of any State or other subdivision of the

United States; and

(B) appears to be intended--

(i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population;

(ii) to influence the policy of a government by

intimidation or coercion; or

(iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass

destruction, assassination, or kidnapping.

As you can see the language used in the Act is unclear and leaves to much room for interpretation. These are just two definitions the entire Act is field with them.

Methodology

-The research hypothesis

Laws that have been approved by the government after the September 11 attacks have been done so in haste and without careful consideration.

Denney 10

Counter terrorism law take away constitutionally protected rights for the sake of "security".

Results/Conclusions

The Homeland Security Act Keeps the public from finding out about health, safety, and environmental problems involving nuclear power plants (Ecologist). Publishers Weekly said, "Technology has increased the Governments ability to spy on its citizens" (68).

Both the Homeland Security act and the Patriot Act use vague terms and include unrelated topics. They are both good steps in the right directions, but need to be replaced with laws more fitting to the actual problem. The laws need to be more focused on sharing information between government agencies. Instead of focusing on more ways to get around the Constitution to gather information on "suspected terrorist".

Just stop for a second and imagine this story "Paul doesn't have the money to pay his rent this month, but he just bought a hundred-dollar pair of sunglasses. He knew at the time he was doing it that it was crazy but felt that he had to do it. Last week he bought three pairs of new fashion shoes even though he doesn't need them, and last month he purchased an electronic keyboard although he doesn't know how to play it." Did you see a problem here? If you say no, probably it is just because you have the same problem. Let me tell you the problem here A compulsive spender, money addicted person who spends hundreds of dollars every week to just feel good about himself.

What is a compulsive spender? A compulsive spender generally spends whatever he has, whether it is $10 or $10000. There is not a point at which his urge to spend is satisfied and he relaxes in to enjoying what he has. He spends on things he does not really need, and he spends regardless of whether he has the money to pay for them. He works hard whether night or day in more than one job sometimes to earn the money to pay his credit card debts. Addictive shopping is a form of behavior designed to avoid unpleasant reality, and is accompanied by a high, which causes the sufferer to lose control and buy many items for which they have no need. The adrenaline rush, the fantasy which surrounds the episode and everything which precedes the actual spending spree all add to the sense of unreality which brings a false sense of freedom from lifes problems.

The compulsive spender has trouble accepting the limits. If he sees something he wants in a catalog or a store, he feels as if he has to have it, immediately, even though he's gotten along without it until now. These are the things that other people might consider as luxuries, the compulsive spender supposes as necessary. He has to have that imported coffee or exotic vinegar, has to take the latest self-improvement course or buy the new lens for his camera. He cannot relax and just accept himself, because he continues to think he should have more, get more, and be more. In a world without limits he ca never get enough.

Satisfaction from a purchase never lasts long for a compulsive spender. He changes his focus when he convinces himself he has enough to move on. It is more likely to explain it with the phrase "get 'another' life." Shortly after buying the cross-country skis, his interest shifts to motorcycles, or photography. Perhaps that's because much of his spending feeds fantasies he has about himself. He believes some ambiguous hope that the next purchase is going to change his life, make him more interesting, fulfilled, but never does. As soon as the high wears off, another craving sets in. The compulsive spenders pay very little attention to spending plans. In fact, planning at all is revulsion to him. For example, he went out to buy a carpet for his living room, and he thought he'd spend around one or two hundred dollars; however, instead he came home with a thousand dollar carpet. A compulsive spender could never say 'I can't have that because it costs more than I planned to spend.' If he sees it and wants it, he has to have it. That would be all right if he had money to pay for it, but most of the time he does not.

For many, shopping is a hobby, a form of recreation. Its the thrill of the hunt, the high from getting it on sale. While some people can control the urge to buy, not everyone can. For those people, their pleasure becomes a source of pain, and their compulsive shopping can disrupt, even destroy, their lives.

My passion is African Art.

The traditional art of Africa plays a major part in African society. Most ceremonies and activities (such as singing, dancing, Buy Writing Effective Prose 110/19 term paper

storytelling, etc.) cannot function completely without visual art. It can also be used as an implement and symbol of rank or

prestige, or have a religious significance. African art consists mainly of sculptures, paintings, fetishes, masks, figures, and

decorative objects.

Sculptures are considered to be the greatest achievement for African art. A majority of the sculptures are carved from wood

but some are also made of metal, stone, terracotta, mud, beadwork, ivory, and other materials. They are found in many parts of

Africa but mainly in western and central Africa. Many ancient rock paintings have been found in Southern and Eastern Africa.

These paintings are believed to be from to the SAN (Bushman) people. Masks and fetishes are often used to scare off bad things

such as evil spirits, witches or ghosts. They are also used to bring about a desired end-break a bad habit, improve ones love life,

or kill a natural or supernatural enemy.

There are three basic themes of African art. The first is the dualism between bush and village. African tribes wear masks and

headdresses the male is represented by the elephant, the most powerful of bush creatures and the female is delicately coifed to

express refinement and civilization. The second theme of African art is the problematic relationships between the sexes. African

tribes use art as a therapeutic device to deal with the problems and issues dealing with the relations between the sexes. The third

theme is the struggle to control natural or supernatural forces to achieve a desired end. African tribes often use masks in

ceremonies (called Gelede) to please and honor the forces.

For each region in Africa, there is a different style of art. The western Sudan Region have masks and figures representing

legendary ancestors and religious sacrifices. The central Sudan Region art includes mud architecture, embroidered textiles,

elaborate coiffure, metal and beadwork jewelry, and leatherwork. This style usually doesn't represent anything special. The west

Guinea Coast Region use masks and figures to police ceremonies, punish people for doing something wrong, settle land-owning

problems and start or end wars. The Central Guinea Coast Region art employs aristocratic materials. Specialized artists creature

works of art for the leaders that include stools, drums, cloth, pottery, terracotta, figures, miniature masks, combs, mirrors, pipes,

and carved musical instruments.

African art is traditionally essential and optimistic. Without art, there would be no African culture.

There is good news for those who shudder at the thought of a grueling, sweaty, "no pain, no gain" exercise routine. Research shows that even a small increase in physical activity can yield big results. The health benefits of such moderately intense physical activity as dancing, gardening, and cleaning house have been confirmed by a number of large research studies (Roberts 8). The scientific evidence is overwhelming Regular exercise leads to a healthier and longer life, with benefits ranging from a stronger heart, muscles, and bones, to improved balance and coordination, to simply getting more fun out of life.

Daily physical activity can reduce your risk for several diseases and conditions. It can prevent heart disease and stroke by strengthening the heart muscle, lowering blood pressure, raising high-density lipoprotein levels (good cholesterol) and lowering low-density lipoprotein levels (bad cholesterol) (Ortlund 4). Exercise also improves blood flow and increases the heart's working capacity. Research shows that people who are physically fit are eight times less likely to die from cardiovascular disease than those who are unfit. Physical fitness also reduces the risk of premature death by 5 percent in men and 8 percent in women (Gregory 5).

Physical activity helps to reduce body fat by building or preserving muscle mass and improving the body's ability to use calories. When physical activity is combined with proper nutrition, it can help control weight and prevent obesity, a major risk factor for many diseases. By increasing muscle strength and endurance and improving

flexibility and posture, regular exercise helps to prevent back pain. When exercise increases the metabolism, it allows the body to burn calories faster, thus aiding in weight control.

For people with varicose veins, exercise improves circulation, preventing blood from poking in legs and easing leg spasms and fatigue. Exercise training also increases the efficiency of the heart both during exercise and at rest. According to research, exercise improves the circulation of blood to ankles and feet, typically areas of poor circulation in persons with chronic heart failure (Roberts 67). This poor circulation weakens the legs and can make walking painful.

Studies have shown that exercise helps people with arthritis in many ways. Exercise reduces joint pain and stiffness and increases flexibility, muscle strength and endurance. Keeping joints flexible and building muscle strength reduces the functional effects of arthritis and protects joints from further problems. Weight control can be important to people who have arthritis because extra weight puts extra pressure on many joints. Strengthening exercises can be performed to increase muscle strength, which help support and protect joints affected by arthritis.

By reducing body fatness, physical activity can help to prevent and control noninsulin-dependent diabetes. Regular exercise lowers blood sugar levels in people with adult-onset diabetes and is important for good diabetes management (Freed ). It also keeps blood sugar levels in range.

Physically active people also experience less bone loss than inactive persons. The right kind of exercise fends off osteoporosis. Regular weight-bearing exercise promotes bone formation and may prevent many forms of bone loss associated with aging (Ortlund ). Exercise also prevents injuries. Improved balance and agility help prevent falls.

While the long-term health benefits of exercise are significant, it is the immediate daily boost that motivates most people to stick with a program. By exercising on a daily basis, people of all ages notice an improved ability to conduct ordinary activities, such as carrying groceries and running for the bus because of their increased energy and stamina.

Studies on the psychological effects of exercise have found that regular physical activity can improve your mood and the way you feel about yourself. Even a ten-minute walk has been shown to improve mood. Studies also show that in times of stress, active people are more likely than inactive ones to be able to relax. Researchers have found that exercise is likely to reduce depression and anxiety and help you to better manage stress (Roberts 14). Exercisers also tend to be more optimistic about their future, feel more in touch with their bodies, and experience a greater sense of control over their lives.

Exactly how much exercise is needed to get results? A study done at Stanford University's School of Medicine found improved fitness in people who did 0 minutes of moderate-intensity activity daily for 8 weeks. The benefit was realized regardless of whether the activity was performed for 0 minutes continuously or was accomplished in smaller chunks throughout the day (Gregory 5). Even though more intense, strenuous exercise (such as running or swimming in 0-minute blocks) can increase the health

rewards, physical activity in any form and at any level will contribute to a healthier, longer life.

Ironically, the approximately 60 percent of Americans who currently do the least physical activity may have the most to gain by making small changes in lifestyle. According to Public Health Reports, inactive individuals who change their ways achieve the greatest gain in health benefits (Freed 5). Adopting just a few new habits such as walking rather than driving to the store, climbing the stairs rather than taking the elevator, and taking a walk after dinner each evening can lead to dramatic improvements and keep you feeling young.

Consistency, moderation, and self-awareness are the keys to preventing injuries. It's safer to exercise on a consistent, regular basis (0 minutes a day for 4 days in a row) than to do nothing all week and overstress you muscles in a -hour Sunday workout (Roberts 8). Moderate workouts that are vigorous but not too demanding are best for achieving health goals.

Self-awareness is also important. Pay attention to the messages coming from your own body and set limits based on these messages. A gentle tug on the muscles, and even some mild soreness, is proof that you're working hard enough. Sharp pain or prolonged achiness, however, means you're doing too much. Your energy level should increase as a result of your activity and you should feel better. If you feel worse, seem tired, or have difficulty sleeping, you are probably overdoing your routine. Other signs of overdoing it

include increases of 5 to 10 beats per minute in your normal resting heart rate, and unexplained weight loss (Ortlund 7).

To find motivation for a daily exercise routine, choose an activity you enjoy doing. Do you prefer competitive or noncompetitive activities? Are you the type of person who likes to exercise alone in the living room to relaxing music? Or would you be more inspired when surrounded by people pumping iron, climbing stairmasters, and taking aerobic dance classes? Also, consider what types of exercise best fit in your schedule. Can you set aside a half-hour in the morning to exercise? Or is midday or evening more realistic?

The most important goal for beginners is to be consistent so that exercise becomes a habit. Weekly goals ("I'm going to walk a total of 8 miles this week") are helpful for sustaining motivation in the short term. Longer-term goals ("By summer I'm going to have enough energy to play tennis twice a week") can get you through immediate obstacles and provide inspiration to keep you going.

The barriers to an active lifestyle take many forms, including lack of energy, ability, support, money, interest, motivation, partners, self-discipline, and time. Identify your personal obstacles, question whether they are real problems or just excuses, and focus on what you can do to overcome them. Illness, bad weather, a job or family crisis, and a thousand other problems can and probably will lead to an occasional lapse in your exercise program. When this happens, don't waste time berating yourself; just start your

program again as soon as possible. But be careful to take the time to rebuild your fitness level.

Many people find that recording their goals, plans, and achievements helps them recognize improvements and stay on course. Start by taking measurements of your waist, abdomen, buttocks, and the middle of one thigh; recheck the measurements in 0 weeks (Gregory 6) . You can also track short-term changes in mood and energy level, and long-term effects on blood pressure, heart rate, cholesterol, and blood sugar.

Any physical activity that you can add to your daily life will have a positive impact on your health. Exercise may start out as a means to an end, but turn out to be a meaningful and satisfying experience in its own right. An inactive lifestyle can make you feel "too tired" to have a good time. The physically fit, on the other hand, find they have energy to spare for pleasurable pursuits.
