John Keats once said about Lord Byron "He describes what he sees - I describe what I imagine, mine is the hardest task" To Autumn is evidence of his way of thinking, as the poem is a vivid, lyrical portrayal of the English autumn, as he imagined it.

The poem celebrates autumn as a season of abundance, a season of reflection, a season of preparation for the winter, and a season worthy of admiration with comparison to what romantic poetry often focuses upon - the spring. The poem is rather literal in its meaning as it does not convey a deeper level of meaning that relates to the reader. The poem fails to "move" the reader in a philosophical, idealistic or moralistic way, and therefore bears no significant message to the reader.

That is not to say that the poem lacks meaning or metaphorical significance, the poem was written to convey a sense of purpose to life and the worth of death. The poem achieves this by using descriptive and vivid expressions to describe the essence of autumn.

The poem uses powerful language to achieve effect. It often makes use of imagery, exaggerated language and onomatopoeia to create an atmosphere of the English autumn, for the reader. Language such as this excerpt from the first stanza,

And fill all fruits with ripeness to the core,

To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells

This type of language, especially adjectives such as ripeness and plump, provide the reader with an excellent description of the landscape. Onomatopoeic effect and alliteration are used rather well in the following example,

Thy hair soft lifted by the winnowing wind;

This use of language creates a rather humble and peaceful atmosphere for the reader. It emphasises the harmony of autumn and this effect, which is used often throughout the poem, could also be a metaphor for the slow down of life during autumn, and the imminent death of the season.

The poem follows the traditional framework of an ode. It is overly lyrical and has a rhythmic device, generally common to all three stanzas, with the exception of the first stanza. The poem follows a rhyme scheme of ABAB CDED CCE for the first stanza, and ABAB CDEC DDE for the second and third. It is unclear why Keats chose to follow a different rhyme scheme for the last two stanzas, but it is certainly not an accident. D and C "swap" rhythmic positions from line eight onwards. The poem employs iambic pentameter, each line as ten syllables.

The poem compares autumn to spring in the third stanza.

Where are the songs of spring? Ay, where are they?

Think not of them, thou hast thy music too,-

This is where the true meaning of the poem is conveyed. Obviously Keats had recognised the almost clich use of spring, as new life in romantic poetry, and of the poetry before this era. His motive behind this poem is to employ an understanding that the autumn, which represents the end of life, is just as important as the spring, which represents new life. The autumn has it's own music too. The personification of autumn in this poem is used to give the reader an alternative view of the seasons, and life in general.

It could be speculated that To Autumn is a metaphor for existence. Death, or ending, is just as important as life, or the beginning, for without one, there could not be the other. But I believe that it could be simply, that to appreciate the simple things in life, such as the warmth of summer or the new life of spring - the decay of life, and the almost monotonous experience of autumn, is essential to existence.

Burn and die you witch! was probably one of the phrases constantly heard after a witch hunt. Witch hunts, which are prime examples of ignorance and murder, are brilliantly portrayed in the Scarlet Letter and The Crucible. . Two different novels that go into detail about some of the different aspects of the Puritan people are The Crucible by Arthur Miller, and The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The Minister s Black Veil , although not set in Puritan times, expressed the same theme of the fear of the unknown. The fear of the unknown was evident in The Minister s Black Veil as the townspeople literally despised Reverend Hooper for the black veil that was hanging in his forehead without even knowing the reason of the presence of the black veil. Being the town s heathen, Hester was constantly humiliated; her burden was further magnified when she conceived. In The Crucible, despite his apparent greed in the beginning, John Proctor tried everything to save his wife, Elizabeth, from the false accusation of witchery, which led to his own demise in the end. The strong following of the Puritan religion is expressed in both The Scarlet Letter and The Crucible. By using adultery, Miller and Hawthorne on the Puritans way of life and the Puritan s reactions to sin. Due to the fact that religion was followed so avidly, those who went and sinned were dealt harsh punishments. Both of the novels suggest the difficulty to find the right and fair punishment to fit the crimes that people committed, but it is necessary to keep peace in the society. The Scarlet Letter, The Crucible, and The Minister s Black Veil , share one common theme and that is how human weakness and their fear of the unknown can impact the way people live and the way people treat each other. In The Crucible, those who are blamed of witchcraft and being seen with the devil are given a chance to redeem themselves by confessing, even if they are innocent. If the accused refuse to confess, their punishment is death, and they are sentenced by being hung. Hester Prynne was punished by being condemned to wear the scarlet-colored A on her breast, reminding the entire society, as well as her own self, of the sin she had committed.

Following the similarities of the themes of The Crucible, The Scarlet Letter, and The Minister s Black Veil are the similarities and differences of the stories characters. Hester Prynne, just like John Proctor and Reverend Hooper, was the protagonist, and was a victim of the people s fear and hatred of the unknown. Identical to John Proctor was Hester Prynne who committed adultery with Chillingsworth. As a woman of principle, she refused to reveal the identity of her fellow adulterer and Pearl s father even though she was questioned by the Reverend Wilson, the governor, and by Chillingsworth. Her faithfulness to Dimmesdale, by keeping his identity secretly, angered the townspeople, and the anger led her to the scaffold where she was publicly humiliated. Just as John proctor defended his wife, Hester fought, and fought hard to keep her only gem, Pearl. Hester s passionate appeal to the governor and to Dimmesdale, to allow her to retain Pearl, shows the significance of the child in her mother s life. The sin that both Hester and John committed are comparable. John Proctor committed adultery with Abigail Williams and Hester Prynne with Reverend Dimmesdale. Despite John s greediness in the beginning of the novel, he defended his wife even if it cost him his life. Both of John Proctor and Hester s secret was kept from the eyes of the public in the beginning of the novels; though in the end they were revealed with painful consequences. Dimmesdale revealed his sin then after that he past away. Same with John Proctors confession in the end that took his life. If John proctor is the protagonist, then Abigail is the diabolical antagonist. In the novel, Abigail is portrayed as the demon himself. Abigail lies without shame, and threatens without fear. She even stuck a needle, two inches into her own belly, just to polish and back up her lies. Abigail, compared to Chillingsworth side by side are witty. Chillingsworth finds a way for the Reverend John Proctor to play right in his hands, trusting the physician with his medical care. John Proctor does not realize that Chillingsworth is Hester s husband and his worst enemy, unworthy of trust. Abby in some way, fooled the whole court about the flying creatures that she obviously made up and let the other girls see what she wanted to see to fool the court. Persistency is the main tool of Abigail and Chillingsworth. Chillingsworth would not let Hester rest and proceed with the torture of Dimmesdale. Dimmesdale trusting the physician, Dimmesdale, was being tortured unknowingly.

Many sports have revolutionized over past years, but none more so than the sport of cheerleading. Cheerleading is simply not what it used to be. Todays cheerleaders look more like professional gymnasts performing daring and risky routines. Cheerleading demands a healthy athlete, but as the stunts and tumbling being performed require more skill and athleticism, more injuries are occurring. Over 50 percent of serious injuries that occur in female athletes are due to the sport of cheerleading. Some injuries that have been obtained include broken ankles, bad backs, and numerous hematomas.

Broken and sprained ankles come hand in hand with most cheerleading squads these days. Often, it depends on the amount of tumbling a team does. Tumbling can be easily described as doing flips. There may be many causes to a broken ankle. One cause is stunting. In a stunt, "flyers" are held about 6 feet above the ground by their teammates. If something were to go wrong in the stunt, and the flyer landed on her foot at an awkward angle, she could seriously damage her ankle. Another cause may be jumping. In cheerleading, jumping does not mean simply jumping straight up and down. Legs are supposed to go in specific positions to demonstrate strength and flexibility. If one were to land awkwardly when doing a jump, their ankle could be sprained or even broken. A third cause of hurt ankles is tumbling. Tumbling is very hard on one's ankles, wrists and back, and the skill required to do tumbling is enormous. One doesn't see a person doing a back flip while completing a 70 degree spin at the same time everyday… usually. However, this is normal for cheerleaders at a high competitive level. The human body is just not made for the abuse that comes with high levels of tumbling. Often, breaks occur when one doesn't finish spinning completely or when one lands awkwardly. So what is done if one injures one's ankle? First, go to the hospital for x-rays. Even if they do not find a break, it is always a good idea to go to a specialist just to make sure. Occasionally, the staff working in the ER fail to recognize a small crack in the ankle. Depending on the severity of the break/sprain, the doctor will probably recommend that one should stay off of the ankle for anywhere from three to seven days. Then, it is acceptable to begin to apply weight to the ankle. If it is a severe break, then a walking boot may be in need for the victim. A walking boot may be worn for up to a month before the break is fully healed. After the sprain/break is fully healed, a brace must be worn for extra support. The ligaments in the ankle have been stretched out, and the ankle is more likely to roll. As said above, the amounts of stress the ankles go through is tremendous and the ankle will never be as strong as it once was.

Another injury obtained through cheerleading is a bad back. Cheerleaders' backs are put through a great amount of stress, as well. The bases (people who hold a girl up) often have exceptionally bad backs, not because the girls are necessarily "heavy," but because of the stunts performed. A second cause of a bad back is tumbling. If one does not have a flexible back, which many don't, the constant bending and snapping the back is made to do when tumbling can be extremely painful. There is not really anything one can do a bad back. Rest is the primary way to heal a bad back, but in the world of competitive cheerleading, there is no such thing as rest. All one can really do is visit a chiropractor, stretch, and take pain medication. The outcome of having a bad back in cheerleading is having a bad back for the rest of one's life. Once one stops participating in the sport, it may not be as painful, but the damage that has been done through years of stress is too much to take back.

A third injury that occurs in cheerleading are hematomas. Hematoma literally translates to blood tumor, but it is basically a collection, or a pocket, of blood. Tumbling, once again, is the main cause. For example, if something goes wrong while one is tumbling and one falls, they may be falling from well above their head height. When one hits the ground, they are going to hit hard. A hematoma can be a result of this. Different treatment is needed depending on the severity and placement of the hematoma. Sometimes the hematoma will break up on it's own if one applies heat abundantly and rests. However, if this course of action is not working, then the hematoma may need to be drained. When it is drained, a large needle is placed in the area of the hematoma, and the fluid is removed. Over time, most of the blood will break up and remove itself from the hematoma. However, if the blood is still in the area after a year or so, chances are it will remain there. It doesn't really cause a problem but some discomfort may arise when it is touched.Order Custom Cheerleading Related Injuries paper

Broken ankles, bad backs, and numerous hematomas are all common injuries in the sport of cheerleading. The number of cheerleading related injuries will continue to be among the highest. For some, this is unbelievable. Some individuals believe that all cheerleaders do is wave around pom-poms and yell encouragement to football players. However, some would say that what competitive cheerleaders do presently is easily comparable to what football players do. The bar for cheerleading is being raised higher and the stunts are becoming more challenging. Cheerleading has already made a drastic transformation and it will continue to change until cheerleaders' bodies can no longer endure what it takes to win first place.

Hopes, Dreams, and Reality

Graduation by Maya Angelou is an essay about discrimination. The beginning of this essay reminded me of my own high school graduation. How scared but excited I was to be taking the next step up in my life. I felt like the story paralleled my experiences at the beginning, but at the end I had a totally different outlook on this piece of writing. As I got further into the essay, I felt that there was nothing about Angelou's life that I had ever experienced or could relate to. Many people in my graduating class have moved on to college but Angelou explains that only a small percent of her class would be continuing on to college. Angelou speaks of how blacks were not given an equal chance and how they would never see the side the white people were exposed to.

"Graduation" begins on a sunny summer day at the end of June. The story begins by introducing the preparations for graduation. It describes the hard work, anticipation, and excitement that goes into this event, . This event brings people of all ages together to celebrate an important event. Angelou states, "graduating classes themselves were the nobility. Like travelers with exotic destinations on their mind". Graduation is an unforgettable day that turns children into adults, it's the commencement of twelve long years of accomplishment. After graduation, you are set free into the real world to find your identity. I myself feel like a traveler with an exotic destination on my mind. I feel like there is something out there for me that I havent discovered yet, and through my hard work and searching I will one day find the exotic destination that Ive been searching for my whole life.

Angelou explains how on your graduation day, you are the special one. You are getting

all of the attention, "The person of the moment" "The birthday girl" Because I just graduated myself, I can relate to what Angelou is saying. It was a day in my life I was getting all the attention for a huge accomplishment. I felt as though I deserved a pat on the back that day, for all the hard work I had accomplished up until that point.

Graduating is a privilege. It is something we look forward to from the day we start school. Angelou considers herself " a member of the winning team" In many ways, I felt the same way. My whole life I have worked so hard for that special day. I felt as though I had conquered the first phase of my life. I also "Felt like a member of the winning team". Angelou is a strong outspoken woman and says she "was headed for the freedom of open fields". As a young woman myself searching for a goal in life, I am also headed for the freedom of open fields. However, I have many more advantages than Angelou did. The types of opportunities that are open to me were not open to Angelou. Though we are both women searching for a role in this world, my chances of reaching my goal are much higher than Angelou's. Compared to Angelou's, My life has been free of obstacles such as racism and poverty. Angelou had to fight and work extremely hard to get the opportunities that I take for granted.

As the day of Angelou's graduation finally approached, it seemed very similar to mine; the preparations, the anticipation, and all the excitement. I felt as though I was reliving my graduation through Angelous essay. The picture Angelou draws is a portrait of a typical graduation, until the two politicians show up. The two men that show up at Angelou's graduation do not want to be there. They were there to spread propaganda. The two men wanted the votes of the black people, so they put on a whole show which the black people saw right through. They knew the men didn't want to be there and were putting on a deceitful act.

The people are aware that they never see politicians at any time of the year unless it's close to election time. I feel as though I can relate to this situation, because modern day politicians become more visible as elections approach.

As the graduation went on, the mood of Angelou went from joyous and excited to unhappy and angry. The visit by the two white men was truly a rude awaking for Angelou and her community. Angelou feels as though her huge accomplishment was nothing. She feels as though the white men had exposed her and the rest of her graduating class to the reality of their future. The two men gave the impression to Angelou and her class that they were "the maids and farmers and washmen" and anything higher was unthinkable.

The end of the ceremony was degrading to Angelou and her friends. They were told that the only jobs in life for them were the lowest ones around. The day of happiness turned into a day of harsh reality. Angelou's big day was ruined not because of anything she had done wrong but because of her color. I feel that it is unfair that Angelou and her people were treated this way; they are just as qualified as any other person.

It really angers me that Angelou is such a smart woman and was unable to show the world just how smart she was. Angelou was unable to display her power and potent ional to the world.

I never had to deal with discrimination or being told I could only have a specific type of job. Thank God, our society is changing. Unlike Angelou, I can be anything I set my heart to. There are no barriers holding me back.

I agree with Angelou and support her ideas and ways of thinking. I believe black people are no different from white people, and I feel that it was unfair that black people were not given

the same opportunities as white people, even though they were just as qualified.

Our society has become so litigious that we brought a lawsuit against the state for saying the pledge, a time honored tradition, and the court declared unconstitutional. In June of 00, Michael Newdow filed a law suit against federal defendants for "injuring his daughter when she was made to 'watch and listen her state employed teacher and her state run school lead her classmates in a ritual proclaiming that there is a God, and that our nation is 'one nation under God.'"

If the Pledge of Allegiance is unconstitutional then why is our school still saying it? Mrs. Hamburger, Assistant Principal, says "it would be ridiculous to change it [the Pledge] when it might be changed back." Mr. Newdow is misusing the very rights and privileges symbolized by the Pledge and the Flag. Maybe he should say the Pledge once in a while to be reminded that others have the same rights protected by the 1st Amendment.

I believe that saying the pledge instills pride in my country and I actually feel like I'm doing a little more as an American by saying the pledge aloud. I enjoy taking a moment to hear the goals of this country and having a little reminder of what I'm working for as an American. The Pledge outlines the ideals and goals Americans should work toward. When I say with conviction "I pledge allegiance" it declares the promise I've made to be loyal and faithful "to the Flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands". Then when I utter "one nation under God" it symbolizes one nation under a higher being if any, having faith and hope in something higher than oneself. Then when I say "indivisible" it expresses the desire of a nation not to be divided by pettiness, discrimination, or over riding self-interests, and "with liberty and justice for all" signifies freedom and fairness for everyone. These goals and ideals seem like something worth fighting for and the veterans of the past wars thought so too. I feel a twinge of anger every time someone sits down right in the middle of the pledge or makes a lot of noise because it shows a lack of respect and interferes with my right as an American to pledge to my Flag.

I would think that after September 11th more people would stand up and say the Pledge of Allegiance aloud to show a little more respect to this country. If I was in another country and the citizens were saluting their flag, I would at least stand to show respect for their beliefs. As citizens of this country you have the right not to believe in the traditions and beliefs that are represented by the flag, but at least stand up and be respectful. The Pledge of Allegiance and the Flag are all about respect.

Order Custom Essay on The Pledge is a Promise

Mr. Pizarro, U.S. Government teacher, says, "The Flag is a symbol of freedom" and "saying the Pledge of Allegiance instills a bit of patriotism in students and a sense of unity among students as 'Americans'." As for the court ruling I feel that the lawsuit is petty to the point that of being ridiculous, saying the pledge of Allegiance never hurt any body, and the only reason why they were able file that kind of lawsuit is because of the liberties symbolized by the Flag and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Saying the pledge takes about 10 seconds out of people's "busy" days and all they have to do is stand, they don't even have to say it, just stand. Standing when the Pledge of Allegiance is being said is a sign of respect for the symbol of our freedoms that everyone enjoys. I see the Flag and the Pledge of Allegiance as goals that we as citizens should work towards, it may not be "justice for all", but it is worth pledging to those goals daily so as to remind us of what exactly we stand for.

Edgar Allen Poe lived from 180 to 184; a family in Richmond adopted him at the age of two after his father abandoned him and his mother's untimely death. Poe had two major addictions that would eventually lead to his downfall; drinking and gambling. Around the year 187 he left Richmond and headed to Boston where he would do most of his writing and join the Army on a two-year term. He married his cousin in 186. All through the next ten years, his wifes extended illness blemished his outlook on life. Poe had been employed as an editor for periodicals in Philadelphia and in New York City. His wife Virginia died in 1847 and afterward Poe became ill. A few years before his wife's death, while struggling with her illness, Poe wrote "The Raven".

In January of 1845 his most famous poem, The Raven was published in New York, where it would turn out to be an astounding hit. Poe was a man fascinated by the thought of death and loved to write about it and it was his fascination and creativity that drew his readers.

Edgar Allen Poe's the "Raven" starts with the narrator sitting one night alone and pondering his past when he hears what he thinks is a visitor. Whilst hearing this "tapping", he immediately thinks of his radiant maiden Lenore that the angels took away and silently hoped it was she. He was excited with the horrifying thought that this may be likely. So to bring himself back to reality, he thought maybe it was just a late visitor at his door. When he opened the door all he saw was darkness as he stood staring and wondering what this noise could have been. At first, I think he is just psyching himself out as many of us do alone on dark filled nights when we hear noises.

Again he thinks of the ghost Lenore when he says, Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before, he whispered his lost loves name Lenore. Back outside he heard the "tapping" again, this time at his window so he went over and when he opened it, in stepped an ebony raven and stared at the narrator. He asked his name and the raven answered Nevermore. I think this is where he starts to loose his sense of reality, although the raven simply said Nevermore the narrator saw a glimpse of meaning behind its visit.

He told himself that in the morning this creature of night would be gone as other visitors had before, then the raven answered, Nevermore. The narrator continued to convince himself of his sanity, by saying that this bird possibly escaped from a master who taught him this one word. He then moved his chair and placed it in front of the raven and thought maybe the raven was sent by God to reunite him with his lost Lenore.

And the raven told him Nevermore. He is now convinced that the raven was sent by wickedness and wishes him to return to where he came from, which is the Nights Plutonian Shore and to leave him alone. Hence the raven answered Nevermore.

The raven sat there staring with these eyes that have all the seeming of a demon that is dreaming. Then a lamplight pushes the shadow of this demon bird on the floor and traps the soul of the narrator underneath it forever. He at this moment knows of his doomed fate and his eternal existence. He was alone forever and there was to be no more Lenore.

My analysis of Poes poem brings me to think that the narrator could never get over the death of his lost love. He was so obsessed with her loss that he finally drove himself insane. I think that the raven symbolizes the night he realized his illness and that his lost love would never return. I think this person was most likely abusive to Lenore, maybe even killed her, a good reason for him to be consumed with guilt. This would also explain why the angels took her, yet he would never be reunited with her ever again. He knew by the look in the raven's eyes, no angels would be coming for him. There are many ways to interpret this poem and I think depending on your mindset when you read it, your interpretation will fluctuate. This is one of the many flattering qualities of poetry.

I chose this literature work for the reason that, it is a poem I have read since my first English or Literature class. Edgar Allen Poe was a talented writer with a demented sense of reality. He brings you into his work and leaves you questioning your own reality. Poe creates dark places that, luckily, most of us don't get a chance to visit. Poe also uses symbolism as a way to draw a reader into his work. For instance, in this poem the raven symbolizes torment or anguish, the word "nevermore" which is used throughout the poem, symbolizes the end of nothing. He will be alone and sad and miserable for the rest of his existence.

"The Raven" is a quizzical poem that confuses its reader that is unaware of the poet's background. Some poems, maybe even most poems can be read without understanding pertinent about its author, but "The Raven" seems to come together for the reader after knowing a little bit about Poe and his disturbed life and what he was going through while writing this specific poem. I am drawn to Edgar Allen Poe's ability to say one thing and represent something totally different.

Marriage versus Living Together

I chose the article Marriage versus Living Together published by Jo McGowan because it displays a difficult decision that many of us make in today's world. We either choose to marry, then live together, but more commonly among young people today, we choose to live together, then marry (maybe). In this article McGowan explains the pros and cons of this question. The author also shows that different cultures see these choices in a different perspective.

Marriage in the United States is not permanent, unlike other cultures. In India for example, "divorce is practically unheard of" (Scott and Warren 84). Once an Indian person chooses a significant other, they stay with them, even if they never marry, they choose to marry to become accepted; the social norm. Therefore in India, people have more of a permanent thought on commitment, and even a commitment to live with each other. In America, we have seen divorce from our parents, friends, parents' friends, and even pastors. We do not believe in the permanence of anything, let alone just living with each other. Americans do not fully understand the concept of marriage. We believe that living together is marriage without the ceremony, and if there are problems in the relationship we are able to call it quits many without complications. I believe that marriage and living together are quite different, both in communication and in commitment.Custom Essays on Marriage versus Living TogetherI chose the article Marriage versus Living Together published by Jo McGowan because it displays a difficult decision that many of us make in today's world. Americans believe that living together and marriage are the same thing. Americans believe that living together will allow them to try one another out, to see if they are compatible. While this makes sense, it allows us to call it quits when things become a rough, not seeing that there will always be rough times which make a relationship stronger. While in a marriage we are committed to the other person and are more apt to try to work out a minor disagreement, and the marriage becomes more secure. When living with one another, the parties involved are able to call it quits and move on if a problem exists, the commitment is just not there. A marriage requires a commitment, while living together does not.

Most people that choose to live together before marriage have poor communication skills with each other, which in turn affects their relationship with one another. While living together, most couples do not talk about personal problems or concerns that they may have. They do not feel that the other person needs to hear about them, or that it is "none of their business". While, being married makes you communicate better, your problems and concerns are your partners problems and concerns, it affects both of you. If you just live together, you have problems communicating. If you decide to get married at some point after the cohabitation, you will continue to act in much the same way you did before, making your relationship much more vulnerable to divorce and major problems. In addition, just living together allows a person to take advantage of the other, by using them for certain things, such as money, gifts, and an emotional output. Communication is very important for a marriage, and if you are just living together your communication is very poor and will be shaped from the cohabitation.

Americans do not understand the communication and commitment that is involved in a marriage. We believe that living together is enough. Marriage is much stronger than living together, couples have to be involved the others problems, they need to communicate and commit to each other in a whole new level in order to make a relationship work.
