Aside from all the uncertainties of a teenage day, for me there is one thing I can always count on. One thing rain or shine I know will never fail me. It is the inevitable fact that as long as I am with my parents, I will have rice for dinner. And until a certain point in my life, the question of "Why every night?" had never occurred to me. I simply accepted it as tradition. Tradition is a hard foe to face, but eventually I looked in its stubborn eyes and insisted on Tuesday night being "Campbell's Chunky Soup night". For those of you who might remark, "It's not worth the fight over Campbell's Chunky Soup," you have to realize that an issue far greater than taste is at hand. I do not dislike rice but rather object to what it stands for. And to me what the rice represents is a tie to a culture I don't identify with, and of which I do not feel a part. This shackle placed on bi-cultural adolescents without our consent, is the pressure to identify with our culture rather than assert our individuality.

My parents are fairly untraditional parents, and I feel that it is because of this that I am given the perspective into who I am and who I might have been. They are not untraditional in the sense that they preach "un-Chinese" views, but rather they understand them even if they don't agree. The keystones of the Chinese culture are knowledge, hard work and humility, while personality, social skills and a sense of individuality take a back seat. Need proof? Just visit MIT. Still, despite the understanding nature of my parents, the unspoken cultural expectations are ever present. Thus, I always felt that academic excellence was demanded, and I soon began to expect it of myself. I felt the pressure to achieve in school, and the concept that nothing was above academic achievement, not even friends was became the structure of my life. Before high school, my days consisted of going to school and doing work. The friendships I did have were severed outside of the classroom. Looking back, those were very bleak years of my life, filled with emptiness and what purpose I did have was not truly my own. I did not work out of passion, but out of habit. I was disconnected from the world and the people around me without even knowing it. I now find it hard to accept that this was the life I was expected to lead as a Chinese student.

It has become apparent to me that culture should never replace individualism. It is imperative for a person to discover their own ideals and not be brainwashed into accepting the predetermined standards of his or her culture. Why should culture be the most important thing to us as a society? Imagine a world where first impressions are not based on your looks, a world where the focus is on the individual and no two are exactly the same. It is a hard concept to imagine for us, a difficult end to reach, but look at the progress made in the multi-cultural United States. With each passing day specific traits that are considered "American" become harder and harder to identify. It is not a loss of cultural identity but a discovery of individual identity, a concept that no whole is ever greater than its individual parts, and a concept that people need not be exactly the same to share pride in a cause. The events of September 11th proved this to me. Although I always felt that I was an American, it was not until that morning that I knew it. When news of the first plane reached me, I felt as if I had been slapped in the face, and I knew for sure it was how I would have felt had my family just been murdered. That was also the moment I realized what America stands for, unlike China, a culture which promotes a unitary population, America stands for the individual. America is a haven for individuals with different morals, standards, values, ideas, and it is a place which promotes this individualism. Yet it is not despite of, but because of this diversity, that Americans can share an extraordinary pride in a single cause. That cause is that every human being should be allowed to discover what the world means to him or her without the pressure to conform to their biological culture. The cause that strives to replace the question "where are you from?" with "what do you stand for?" The same cause Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke for when he said a person should not to be "judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." This is the cause for which Americans are fighting, and because it is a cause that we feel a passion for, it is all the more powerful.

Now you might be under the impression that I am anti-culture or anti-Chinese, but this is not entirely true. I am against ideas that present a person's culture as a predetermination of who that person will be. I am for being multi-cultured, because being a part of another culture allows a person to step out of his or her own heritage box, giving a bird's eye view of the box and all it stood for. I feel that it is my bi-cultured life that gives me this perspective on my heritage that perhaps my cousins in China might not be able to see, and I am thankful for that. Yet on an every day basis, I still find myself questioning whether any particular action on my part is a reflection of a silent wish of my parents I subconsciously want to fulfill. I wake up every day wondering if today is the day I forget the shackles of my culture and the pressures to conform to become what my parents describe me as, "Chinese". I go to sleep every day wondering why being "Chinese" requires that I must be hard working, soft spoken, and humble, not to say that there is anything wrong with those qualities. But I spend my days not restricting myself to these cultural limits but always reaching for more from within myself. If this is seen as being "un-Chinese," then I will continue to defy these unspoken cultural expectations, because as the United States has shown, individuals can create a culture but a culture should never define an individual. The factors that affect the Resistance of a Wire

Aim of investigation

The key factor that I will investigate is how the length of the wire will affect the resistance.

My Prediction

Order College Papers on The factors that affect the resistance in a wire.

I predict that as the length of the wire increases, so does the resistance.

Background Knowledge

What is resistance?

Resistance is the force, which prevents the flow of electrons (current) through an electrical conductor. Resistance is measured in ohms. Ohm's law was named after its discoverer George Ohm; he discovered that the amount of current flowing through a circuit is directly proportional to the volts impressed on the circuit. George Ohm discovered a rule for working out the resistance of a circuit

R=V/I

V = volts

I = current

R = resistance

Resistance occurs when the negatively charged electrons (tiny negatively charged particles) travelling along the current in the wire, collide with the positively charged atoms. These collisions slow down the flow of electrons, which causes resistance. The amount, size and density of atoms have an effect on resistance. The circuit itself has some resistance.

Non-Ohmic and Ohmic conductor

In a graph showing the resistance of an object or substance; the steeper the graph, the lower the resistance and the flatter the graph, the higher the resistance. A substance that gives a straight-line graph is called an Ohmic conductor. Copper wire and all other metals give this shape of graph, unless they change temperature.

Here is a graph showing an Ohmic conductor

Not all objects and substances give a straight-line graph like this e.g. a Filament Lamp. You can see that the lamp is a non-ohmic conductor because the graph is not a straight-line graph; it does not obey Ohms law. As more current flows, the metal filament gets hotter and so its resistance increases. This means the graph gets flatter as shown.

Here is a graph showing a non-Ohmic conductor the filament lamp

The factors that affect resistance

There are factors, which can affect resistance. These are

v The material of the wire

v The temperature of the wire

v The diameter of the wire

v The length of the wire

The material of a wire

Different wires contain different amounts of atoms; some wires have many of atoms, in contrast to others, which have few atoms. A wire that does not conduct electricity easily is known as a bad conductor of electricity. All metals are good conductors because inside them they have a large number of electrons that can move easily from atom to atom, so that a current flows; Nichrome is an example of a metal that does not conduct electricity easily, Copper is an example of a metal that is a good conductor. Wires that have many atoms will have a high resistance, compared to wires, which have a few atoms, because there is a smaller area for the electrons to pass through. Also the size of these atoms can change; some atoms are large compared to others, which are small. This will result in the flow of electrons being slowed down, and also more collision between the atoms in the wire and the electrons in the current. The distribution of these atoms also changes. In some materials the atoms are closely packed together, which means that there will be a smaller surface area for the electrons to pass through. The flow of electrons will be slowed down, and the collisions between the electrons and atoms will be more frequent. A wire, which easily conducts electricity, is known as a good conductor of electricity.

The temperature of the wire

The diameter of a wire

Different types of wires have different thickness. Wires with a large diameter have less resistance compared to wires that have a small diameter, which have more resistance. Wires with a small diameter have a high resistance because when the electrons are travelling along the wire, there is only a small area in which the electrons can pass through. The electrons have to squeeze together in order to be able to pass through the wire. This would cause the flow of electrons to be slowed down to enable all of the electrons to be able to pass through the wire. There will also be more collision occurring. Not just between the atoms and the electron, but collisions between the electrons and other electrons. Also in thin wires the atoms are densely packed together which causes more collisions between the atoms and the electrons. Therefore the current will be slowed down, which means that the thin wire has a high resistance. Wires with a thick diameter have a low resistance when compared to wires thin wires. The reason for this is, in wires that have a thick diameter there is a larger surface that the current can flow through. Consequently less collisions between the electrons in the current and the atoms in the wire, because there is a larger surface for the current to flow through. Also there will be a larger distance between the atoms, which will cause fewer collisions. In a thick wire the electrons do not have to squeeze together to be able to pass through the wire, as much as they would in a thin wire. Hence less collisions between the electrons and the atoms

The length of a wire

Long wires have more resistance, in contrast to short wires, because in long wires the electrons have a larger surface to cover, which means it will take the electrons longer to travel from one end of the wire to the other. The reason for this is the collisions between the atoms and the electrons will be more frequent because there is a longer length for the electrons to travel. Also the electrons have to squeeze together for a longer length of time in a long wire to be able to pass through the wire but in a short wire the electrons only have to squeeze together for a short time. Long wires have a larger surface area that the electrons have to cover. Short wires have a small surface area that the electrons have to cover.

Jean Pierre Jeunet's film 001, Amelie, is about a girl called Amelie who works as a waitress in Paris. Her life changes around when she returns a box of childhood treasures hiding behind a wall to its grown up owner. Amelie sees the happiness of the person she returned the box to and decides to straighten out other people's lives by making it better or sometimes by making it worse when she thought the person deserved it. Jeunet conveys the sense of reality and fantasy with the use of colors. In the scene that the narrator is telling the viewer about what Amelie likes, Jeunet uses the colors black, green and red.

The first shot of the scene begins with Amelie in the movie theater. The camera starts off with a close-up shot of Amelie's face and it slowly pans across the people's face sitting behind her. The seats in the movie theater are bright red and the people's clothing is mostly green. The colors red and green give the viewer a sense of fantasy and fairy tale. Fairy tales are usually connected to big luscious green woods and beautiful princesses dressed in red. Jeunet shows the feeling of people watching movies in the movie theater with the use of the color red and green. People live through fantasies when they watch movies because everything is so perfect and amazing. The use of the color green and red is used to convey the sense of happiness and fantasy people feel when they watch movies. Part of the happiness can also be seen through the smile of the people sitting behind Amelie.

Jeunet uses the color black, through the use of clips from old movies, in the third and fifth shots to contrast reality and fantasy of films. The third shot is a clip from an old movie of two people kissing, but as pointed out by Amelie, there is some type of insect crawling in the background of the scene. The reality of love and romance in films is conveyed through the insect crawling through the scene making the "perfect love scene" imperfect and flawed. When we watch the films we forget about the reality and overlook the insect which represents the imperfect. But, at the same time, Jeunet uses a clip from an old movie on the fifth shot to convey the fantasy existent in films. Two people are in a car driving down the street but the driver is driving without looking at the road. The contradiction of the reality and fantasy in films is conveyed through the black and white in the old movies.

In the seventh shot, tilting is used to transition from Amelie's face to the beans she is touching. As the camera tilts the viewer can see that Amelie is wearing a red dress like the princesses in the fairy tales. At the end of the shot, Amelie is shown touching green beans that represent the fairy tale world she reaches for after her life is turned around. Amelie straightened people's life by making their lives like a fairy tale where everything is perfect and happy. Amelie's red dress and the shot of the curves of her body give the viewer a sense of sexuality and love which is also the part of the fairy tale world. The redness of her dress and her body sets the viewer up for the later sex scenes in the movies. Write your Cinematograph in Amelie research paper

The ninth shot of the scene shows Amelie wearing a red dress in St. Martin's Canal. The camera angle starts off in Bird's eye view and it slowly tilts to show Amelie skipping stone. The water that was supposed to be blue is shown in a shade of green as if it was reflecting the green trees surrounding the water. The greenness and her red dress convey the sense that Amelie is living in a world of fairy tales and she is the princess trying to make her world perfect, the way it should be.

Jeunet's choice of color in the movie is well used to convey the main point of the movie, the fantasy world that Amelie lives in. The use of the fifth shot reminds the viewer about the reality of life that viewers forget about when they watch movies like Amelie where everything is like a fairy tale. The colors red, green and black set the viewer up for the mood of the movie with the sense of fairy tale and the tasks Amelie tries to accomplish.

Please note that this sample paper on Cinematograph in Amelie is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on Cinematograph in Amelie, we are here to assist you. The Great Obsession

Many people have things in their lives that they cherish and can't see themselves living without, like in the essay "Music," by Louis Gonzalez. He had an obsession for music and an intimate kind of relationship formed with the every sounds of music. "(Music's) weight was a lover's hand upon my shoulder, and its hourglass body was a pleasure to hold. It whispered sweet kisses in my ear." (1) For me this obsession is the sport of basketball simply because brings me enjoyment, healthy physical exercise, and the appreciation for every aspect of the game. Basketball has been this for me for many years going back to elementary school and my great fondness for this sport hasn't decreased any, but has grown even more over the years.

Enjoying the things that you do is a factor for happiness, and I strive to be happy and bring a happy environment around me everywhere I go. It seems that the only way possible to me is by way of the sport of basketball. Every time I step on a basketball court it brings enjoyment to me because it is some sort of an adventure seeing what the outcome of a basketball game is going to be, wondering if I can push my body to new heights and overcome adversity, all this taking place in my head and the basketball court.

Working out hard for something that you enjoy, like lifting weights and running laps, helps that person get better at whatever they are working out for. In Louis Gonzalez' case he practiced with the music and joined a band, the same as a basketball player joining a fitness group or getting a membership at a fitness center. "(Louis Gonzalez) joined a local college group and began to play small venues." () The feeling of sweat running down my face in the heat is not a good feeling, but even basketball makes that a wonderful experience and knowing that that sweat came from the hard healthy physical work that I put out on the court made me feel good about how much exercise I was putting out. All this excitement made it easier to go out and practice basketball and that helped me become a better basketball player helping me to be able to handle all that high school basketball brought me, doing well in the sport.

Do my essay on obsession CHEAP !

The appreciation of this sport has brought me to watch a basketball game on television and study every bit of it, the 60 degree dunks by Kobe, the crossover by Iverson, the jump shot by McGrady, and the crowd response for each of these aspects of the game. It brings me inside the game and helps me picture myself doing those things and that helped me duplicate those moves the best I could in every basketball game I had in high school.

"Music," by Louis Gonzalez, gives an example of the many things that people may cherish in their everyday lives. May it be music, basketball, clothes, shoes, movies, or anything else that people enjoy. I can't picture a life without basketball, like Louis probably can't picture a life without music, and that can go for anybody and their obsessions. Life is filled with so many different treasures that are priceless and until a person can find their own personal treasure, life for them will never be complete. Basketball is my treasure.

Please note that this sample paper on obsession is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. R.E essay

In this essay I am going to describe and evaluate different world religions beliefs on suffering, the creation of the world, how God is thought as, own opinions of God and people's experience of God.

Atheist An atheist is someone who does not believe in God.

Theist A theist is someone who believes in God.

Write my Essay on Essay on world religons

Agnostic An agnostic is somebody who doesn't know whether they believe in God or not.

Free will Free will is when somebody believes that God has given people the choice to be either Holy and worship God or be bad and be punished when she/he is dead.

In Christianity, it is believed that God created the world in 7 days and rested on the 7th day, but scientists believe that the world was created when a huge explosion, known as 'the big bang theory' happened when two gases reacted and created the earth. Some scientists would say that this proves that God does not exist and that science is right, whereas if somebody believes in God and Science could say that the big bang theory is absolutely correct but would then question who put the gases that caused the explosion in the first place? At the moment scientists cannot really reply to this question.

The way the world is made people believe in God because it is too well organised that living organisms can live most of the time perfectly, and also the way the body is designed too well that in most human beings, all the systems work in perfect order and couldn't have been just by chance. On the other hand people could say that people who suffer terminal illnesses and pain in the world such as rape, murder, assault and other such means then God is a pretty poor design in their eyes. Also in Darwin's theory that people evolved from apes, then God would not be needed for such part of nature because one tiny molecule could have evolved and millions of years later here we are and perhaps we still haven't finished evolving.

A famous convert is St. Paul who on his way to Damascus to persecute Christians for not believing in his faith, then when he was stopped by a bright light and heard the voice of Jesus, telling him to not persecute but to love. Soon he became a Christian and wrote scripts of the bible. This could prove to be a religious experience but on the other hand it could have been a freak weather condition that temporary blinded him and being delirious thought that Jesus was speaking to him and some people could use both arguments for and against the existence of God

Some people believe God does not exist because if God does exist why does God not show compassion towards people who have done not much wrong in their life to die slow deaths, or watch people die slowly, and why are people who commit murder sometimes get away with this crime and the innocent person be murdered. Christians would give the reason that suffering is a test weather or not people walk away from the light of God because they believe that God has taken from them when they have done nothing to deserve such cruelty. Also believe that like Jesus everything that is bad and bring suffering, that something good will come out of it, like the phrase 'every cloud has a silver lining.'

In this world there is suffering and evil and people seem to doubt weather God exists and if he is all mighty and powerful why doesn't he stop this evil and life be peaceful, this is a view of an atheist. The views of a Christian theist is that it is a test of free will and that they can choose the light or walk away from it and choose evil. Also Christians believe that whenever the Devil causes evil in this world it is always defeated by God, in which good always beats evil.

I think that Science and religion are compatible because the big bang theory shows that science can be right but someone/something must have put this explosion in order to happen or make sure that it did happen.

In Islam God is seen as both immanent and transcendent. Muslims believe that God is not restricted by the world or by time and cannot be affected by this world. Also God is believed to be immanent in which God is compassionate and is close to all living things and loves them all and will help them in which ways God can.

In Hinduism they also believe that God is both immanent and transcendent. God is immanent because God becomes involved with humans through incarnations when God takes a human form and is involved with humans. Also God is transcendent because Hindus believe that God holds the universe together and he is also beyond time and space so God is transcendent.

God can take many shapes in world religions and in Islam and Hinduism this is how God takes forms

In Islam God is one and has no equal or partner in or out of this world.

In Hinduism they are the believers of polytheism in which there are many Gods in this world, e.g. Brahman is split in three, Brahma creates, Vishnu sustains and Shiva destroys.

God is also seen as personal and impersonal. Personal means that God is like a human and can be spoken to through prayer, it is seen to speak to God like this as more reachable. Impersonal is when God is a spirit or a force in which God cannot be reached or understood by human beings at all. God cannot be broken down God is an absolute power.

Believers of God can say different ways that they believe in God through either special revelation or general revelation.

In Islam Muhammad is said to had scrolls of the Qu'ran told to him and to recite by the angel Gabriel , this thought to be a special revelation in which God spoke to Muhammad through the angel and saw as a miracle.

In Hinduism Mahatma Gandhi told the people to protest about British rule peacefully and this God's will, this was general revelation because God has not spoke directly to Gandhi but in a way revealed himself as British rule soon didn't exist in India and India was independent.

In conclusion I believe in God but in bad times my faith is put to the test because when bad things have happened weather they are personal to me or not it makes me think sometimes if there is a God or not, and there is one thing that still makes me believe in God, hope.

Be bloody, bold, and resolute. Laugh to scorn

The power of man, for none of woman born

Shall harm Macbeth.

Cheap University Papers on hi

THIRD APPARITION

Macbeth shall never vanquished be until

Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill

Shall come against him. (Shakespeare, 4.1.0-, 4.1.105-107)

But Macduff is not of woman born, and Birnam Wood does come to Dunsinane. Thus, in the end, Macbeth fights against fate (though he is not initially aware of it) and loses. His belief that he can change his fate, or at the very least know it, leads him to visit the Witches for the second time. In this work, as in Beowulf, fate can sometimes, but not always, be defeated. The idea that fate can be beaten ties the cultures and literary works of Beowulf and Macbeth together.

In most of Beowulf, fate is equated with Gods will. The first example of this is Grendels family being banished, thanks to Cain

He [Grendel] was spawned in that slime,

Conceived by a pair of those monsters born

Of Cain, murderous creatures banished

By God, punished forever for the crime

Of Abels death. The Almighty drove

Those demons out...

A brood forever opposing the Lords

Will, and again and again defeated. (Beowulf, 6)

As this passage demonstrates, God can choose to be a vengeful, spiteful being. If He chooses, He can banish a being for any reason, just or not. Similarly, Grendel cannot be killed by weapons, but must be killed by bare hands. Cain endures a similar fate Then the Lord said to Cain, No! If anyone kills you, I will punish that person seven times more. Then the Lord put a mark on Cain. It was a warning to anyone who met him not to kill him. (International Childrens Bible, Genesis 415) The unpleasant fate that God wishes upon both Cain and Grendel (his descendant) is the hallmark of the Old Testament God, the being that is here invoked in Beowulf.

But the God of Beowulf is not always vengeful. In fact, He is only vengeful towards Grendel and his kind. God favors humans, the Geats and the Danes. The people of Denmark trust that God will help them, as Hrothgar says upon Beowulfs arrival Our Holy Father/Has sent him [Beowulf] as a sign of His grace, a mark/Of His favor, to help us defeat Grendel/And end that terror. (Beowulf, 5) He later repeats this message after Grendels death. The Danes see God as a being who favors them, since they believe themselves to be good. It is this belief that brings them to see Beowulf as a savior. Beowulf himself places the battle in Gods hands Grendel is no braver, no stronger/Than I am!...Let God in His wisdom/Extend His hand where He wills, reward/Whom He chooses! (Beowulf, 44) Like Hrothgar, he believes that God will choose him, though he does not explicitly say this.

Hrothgars belief becomes stronger after Beowulf kills Grendel

Grendels terrible

Anger hung over our heads too long,

Dropping down misery; but the Almighty makes miracles

When He pleases, wonder after wonder, and this world

Rests in His hands. I had given up hope,

Exhausted prayer, expected nothing

But misfortune forever. (Beowulf, 5)

Hrothgars belief in Gods power is readily apparent from this speech. Thus, Hrothgar comes to believe in a benevolent God, more like the God of the New Testament. This is in line with Christian teachings, since Christianity itself is based on Jesus teachings in the New Testament.

Yet Gods will and fate, even in such a conversion text as Beowulf, are not totally synonymous. After Beowulf kills Grendel, the poet tells us that The monster would have murdered again/And again had not God, and the heros courage/Turned fate aside. (Beowulf, 56) Since God turns fate aside, God and fate must be two different entities. However, in most of the poem, fate works as Gods will. In contrast, fate goes against Gods will in Macbeth. Fate is controlled by the Witches, the Apparitions, and Hecate, the goddess of witchcraft. These are evil beings, and are thus expected to do the opposite of the benevolent Christian Gods will. Whereas in Beowulf, fate is often tied with God, fate in Macbeth usually goes against Gods will. A benevolent God would not wish to put Macbeth through the pain and suffering he endures.

Also, Gods will does not totally correspond with that of the Anglo-Saxon tribes. The Danes would certainly have wished to have Grendels corpse to display, rather than just his arm, and so would Beowulf

I wish

I could show you, here in Herot, his corpse

Stretched on this floor! I twisted my fingers

Around his claw, ripped and tore at it

As hard as I could I meant to kill him

Right here, hold him so tightly that his heart

Would stop, would break, his life spill

On this floor. But Gods will was against me... (Beowulf, 5)

Though God may favor a certain group of people, God himself has the power to do whatever he wishes. It is this power that makes Him, in Beowulf, a true agent of fate. Beowulf acknowledges this Id have been dead at once/And the fight finished, the she-devil victorious/If our Father in Heaven had not helped me. (Beowulf, 75) This acknowledgement is part of Beowulfs greater transition to a spiritual man. Through this, he begins to recognize Gods role in his life.

God fights against Grendel. But Grendel, being the monster that he is, will not stand for this. Grendel resents his fate

t was a cold-blooded lie that a god had lovingly made the world and set out the sun and moon as lights to land-dwellers, that brothers had fought, that one of the races was saved, the other cursed. Yet he, the old Shaper, might make it true, by the sweetness of his harp, his cunning trickery. It came to me with a fierce jolt that I wanted it. As they did too, though vicious animals, cunning, cracked with theories. I wanted it, yes! Even if I must be the outcast, cursed by the rules of his hideous fable. (Gardner, 55)

Grendel does not want to be shunned from human society. He wishes to be a part of human society because he wants attention. In his life before attacking Herot, he plays no role in human society. The humans pay no attention to him though they know that two creatures live in the swamp, they want no part of them. But as the monster, he has a role to fill in human society. A purpose in life.

Weak babies left to die and military training starting at age seven.

Sounds like a horrible and unfair way of life. But in Sparta this was all done for good

reasoning. Sparta was a very militaristic city-state therefore things such as leaving weak

babies to die and starting military training at age seven made Sparta the strongest military

force around. Close by this strong, patriotic city-state was the beautiful Athens where

individual freedom was strongly practiced. They had democracy, beautiful buildings and

many philosophers. Where would have been the better place to live, Sparta or Athens? An

examination of a very strong army, an oligarchy type of government, and the equality of

women and men will show that Sparta was a better place to live.

In 60 B.C.E, the Messenians rebelled against the laid back Spartans. Sparta

was successful in the end but not without using all the brute force they had. From then on,

Sparta decided that if they were to defeat any other rebelling armies, they would have to

devote all of their time to training a strong army. With a force never larger than eight

thousand men, they had the strongest army around because of the extensive training each

soldier went through. At age seven, each Spartan boy was taking from their home and

brought to schools where their rigorous training began. When the Spartan warriors were

between the ages of twenty and thirty was when they showed off their treacherous

training in the military barracks. In fact, Sparta over powered the Athenians when they

came face to face on the battlefield. Thus proving that Spartas army was more powerful

than the Athenian army and therefore making Sparta a safer and more secure place to live.

In the times of Sparta and Athens, there were three types of government, the

monarchy type, which was the normal system of rule and had a king as the leader, the

democracy type, which meant the people voted whom they want as their leader, and the

oligarchy type which, when translated means "the few to rule". Athenians were very

strong believers in democracy because they felt that democracy was the fair way that their

city-state should be run. Sparta, however; were strong believers in oligarchy which

probably made them the strong militaristic city-state that they were. With more members

of government to vote on issues of the city-state, there was a better chance that if a

member of society were to express an issue that their issue would be considered as a

result, the more members in the government, the more time there was to adhere to issues

and although Athens government was voted in, they may not have been the best because

they had only one person seeing to issues where as the oligarchy government had many.

It is a known fact that throughout history, women were never treated as

equals to men until the 170s though it is recorded that Spartan women were cherished

and treated just the same, if not better, than the Spartan males. The women were thought

so highly upon because they were the ones that held the key to their successful army.

Women were child bearers and the more women there were in Sparta, the more babies

they could have, and the more babies their were the more man power they had out on the

battlefield. Women in Sparta were the crucial part to the circle of life in Sparta which was

very important to their army and they were recognized for this. Whereas Athenian women

had no power what soever when it came to anything. Sure they lived in a democratic

society but they were not able vote such as the men did.

An examination of Spartas strong army, an oligarchy form of government

and the equality of women to men in Spartan society has shown that Sparta was indeed a

better place to live than Athens. Although Athens had many good factors supporting their

free way of life, Sparta offered a secure, well governed and equal lifestyle. Athenians

were free to do whatever they wished while Spartans were being extensively trained on

how to be the perfect Spartan warriors. Even with all known historical facts, it still

remains an individuals choice to decide which was the better society to live in. Always

keeping in mind that in order to win, one must lose.
