Mysterious events have occurred which made the people of Salem believe certain women should be accused of witchcraft. This assumption creates an atmosphere of tension and havoc. Elizabeth Proctor was accused of witchcraft because Cheever and Hale found a poppet in her house that had a needle stuck in her belly. "Abigail were stabbed tonight, a needle were stuck in her belly-," (pg. 76, Act II) This event made Cheever and Hale believe the poppet found in Elizabeth's house was a voodoo doll. Also, after Elizabeth heard that Abigail charged her for using witchcraft she said, "Why- the girl is murder! She must be ripped out of the world!" (pg. 76, Act II). This indicates that Elizabeth is really guilty and she is then escorted by Herrick and his nine men to the county jail.

Rebecca Nurse was also accused of witchcraft. The event that links Rebecca Nurse's involvement is that Mrs. Putnam's seven children all died on the day of their birth. Rebecca tended to these children. "Is it natural work to lose seven children before they live a day?" (pg. , Act I). Another strange thing is that none of Rebecca's eleven children and twenty-six grandchildren have died.

Another woman accused of witchcraft was Sarah Good. An event that indicates she is guilty of using witchcraft happened in the previous month. Whenever Sarah Good would come to the Proctor's house and beg for food, Marry Warren, their servant, usually turned her away empty-handed. Then Sarah Good would mumble to herself. One day, as she walked away ,Mary Warren felt as if her guts would burst for two days after. " And so I told that to Judge Hawthorne, and he asked her so, 'Sarah Good,' says he, 'what curse do you mumble that this girl must fall sick after turning you away?' And then she replies- mimicking an old crone 'Why, your excellence, no curse at all. I only say my commandments; I hope I may say my commandments,' says she!" (Pg. 58, Act II) However, when Judge Hawthorne asked Sarah Good to recite the Ten Commandments, she could not even say one of them.

The real reason why Elizabeth Proctor was accused of witchcraft by Abigail is because she wants to continue her affair with John Proctor. If Elizabeth is proved guilty, she will either spend a long time in prison or be hanged. This would make it easier for Abigail to win John back if Elizabeth is no longer a threat. I think Abigail framed Elizabeth to make Cheever and Hale believe she was guilty. In court, Mary (the Proctor's servant girl) was sitting next to Abigail, while Mary was making the poppet. She could have told Mary to stick a needle in it or done it herself. Then, she could have told her to place the poppet at a noticeable spot in her house, so Cheever and Hale would definitely find it. A true explanation of why Rebecca Nurse was accused of witchcraft is because of her land feud with the Putnam's. I think that Mrs. Putnam still has very sore feelings toward Rebecca because of their big war land feud and also because her seven children died on the day they were born. It is understandable that someone would resent the person who cared for their children who all past away on the day they were born. The real reason Sarah Good was accused of practicing witchcraft is because of her social status. She is a poor, old beggar that is a nuisance to their community. If she were found guilty, it would be easy for the town to lock her up in prison or hang her. They wouldn't miss her or feel guilty even if their accusations were wrong.

An atmosphere of revenge creates tension and havoc around Salem. Everyone is accusing each other because of the feelings they have toward a specific person. The accused do not necessarily practice witchcraft, but others seeking revenge see this as a good opportunity to place blame so they do not get accused themselves

One of the most compelling painters of the post war era Sigmar Polke is still an important politically edged artist today. Since the 160's Polke has experimented with a diverse range of styles and subject matter bringing them together with a unique and experimental range of different materials and techniques.

In a recent exhibition at London's Tate Modern gallery entitled "History of Everything" (which was originally held in the USA by the Dallas Museum of Art) Polke's work form the last six years is showcased. In response to the original Dallas setting for the exhibition Polke created several new pieces to be shown, including painting of shooting arcades and that of a gun seller. Throughout the exhibition are references to global politics as well as his interest in surveillance, authority, the breaking down of printing mistakes. In addition to those pieces made in response to the Dallas location are several works specifically referencing London, ranging from new examples of his 'machine painting' technique as well as new paintings using newspaper and magazine images. Throughout the exhibition Polke's ironic sense of humour is apparent, evidence of which can be found in two large paintings showing images of nudist colonies where unclothed people frolic in the country, a clever and whimsical look at the British contradictory attitudes towards sex.

Concentrating on the works created for the Dallas exhibition we can see the theme of gun culture coming through strongly. The West USA being very much stereotyped as having an extensive gun culture both for sport and more sinister activities. For that exhibition Polke had asked to be sent an assortment of Texan newspapers, which have served as inspiration for several of the works on display.

The piece "This discovery could have grave consequences for mankind" depicts an open packet of field pellets for an air gun and their heavily branded box. The image used for this piece looks as if it was taken directly for an advert for the ammunitition's manufacturer. This is an interesting point as the advertisement of such products helps to feed the gun culture in society by portraying the guns as an item of desire, that owning a gun should be desired and that to shooting a gun is a good thing and a meaningful pastime. The type face used to write the company name and the power wording for the pellets (Premier) are all chosen to make the product seem high quality, refined and for the discerning gunperson. This type of marketing plays on the poorer, working class person's insecurities to not appear to belong to the low income bracket. It is in the working classes that gun culture is most rife and by using this particular brand of ammunition it makes them appear to be of affluence.

The pellets that are shown are the type of ammunition young children could terrorise their neighbourhood with. Often the first type of gun a child will be given to handle will be an air gun that shoots pellets just like those shown in the picture. As such does the title of this work give us an insight into how Polke views this scenario? That these pellets are the stating point for a life long obsession with guns and violence? The way in which the pellets are displayed in a small tray like container and combined with the printing method of the images makes them appear almost like seeds. This is strange element in the most immediate sense in that seeds are organic and represent the start of life where as bullets and guns immediately bring up thought and images of death. However these smaller field pellets are like seeds, seeds that grow into something bigger and more dangerous. They are the seeds that plant the thoughts of finding fun in violence. For a child starting with these and shooting at small animals gives them the taste for blood and enjoyment in killing.

The title of this work also gives us example of his sense of humour. The irony in the title as the word "grave" implies death and the ammunition would not be suitable for killing but it is where the interest could lead. It is also a very light hearted and playful title for an issue that he approaches with extreme seriousness.

Many of these topics are also displayed in the piece "I don't really think about anything too much" where the gentleman in the piece is posing next to a field target, assumed to be his, looking very happy and satisfied. The field target itself is riddled with high scoring hits to the chest. Illustrating the pleasure people find in shooting a gun, the power it makes them feel while they possess one.

"Financial freedom while helping others" is a very bold startling image displaying many shotguns laid out on several tables for sale. It is a comment on the sale of guns and how they are sold often for 'the consumers protection', which just adds to the problem of rising firearms sales.

"Splatter analysis" shows the spread of shotgun shot on a test card. However the phrasing of the work's title is peculiar as splatter refers directly to a liquid for instance when a shotgun is fired at a human and the effect it has. It is a clever play on words that hides a distinctly more unsettling and disturbing message behind an already violent image.

Although not directly linked to the Dallas works Untitled deals with the USA as a whole and specifically the USA's politics and military actions. It is an example of

Polke's machine painting technique. Taken from a picture of US troops on their ship in

The Gulf of Aden playing Risk. The Troops are very likely to be on their way to Iraq. The caption from the original photo reads …played the board game Risk on a ship in the Gulf of Aden last fall. The object of the game is to dominate the world. Stephen

Crowley/The New York Times. This was clearly deliberately left in the work by Polke to show his opinion of the decision taken by the USA to take military action. The phrase describing the board game combined with the image Polke uses implies that it is not to be taken at face value. In fact, with regards to the image's caption, the same could be said of US politics at the present time. Trying to force out anything or anyone that will not side with them or bow to their pressure.

It would be all to easy to write off these works as superficial and purely anti American. However looking deeper into them reveals a witty yet informed, cynical take on the violent nature of a nations sub culture and a country's aggressive political stance.

Using the Internet as a research tool presents new challenges with information overload and problems obtaining and maintaining quality sources (Fornaciari-Roca 1). The Internet can be a useful tool if used properly and with enough information to conduct proper research. The article I have selected to critique; The Age of Clutter Conducting Effective Research Using the Internet. By reading this article, people looking to use the World Wide Web may find effective tools and a clearer understanding. On the other hand, the information obtained by the Internet might also be misleading or irrelevant and lack synthesis and analysis, which can lead to poor decisions based on information they have collected. After reading this article, I can relate with the material and clearly provide information of how the authors' styles are expressed in several elements from their perception to obvious fallacy.

The authors' direct statement and perception to the topic of research on the Internet demonstrated the ability to do effective but proper research using the World Wide Web. The emotion to this article affects the peoples' awareness to the difference between knowledge and information. Also, quality research can make a difference in knowledge obtained that can result in people making proper decisions. As the authors' clearly use the informal fallacy (http//gncurtis.home.texas.net/), Our daily lives are saturated with more data streams than at any previous point in history, and all the evidence suggests that the tide is rising." (Fornaciari-Roca 1) The problem may result in the collection of a large amount of unrelated and irrelevant data that contributes to the creation of knowledge or the support of good and bad decision-making.

I believe the authors argument is to realize the Internet is not an encyclopedia of actual facts, but a world of knowledge based on others research and/or data. Common sense is simply the synonym of logic and is obviously directed to those who use the Internet. Finally, the article states detailed sections of problem resolution. Below is a short list of what ideas the authors' are trying to establish

(Fornaciari-Roca 1)

Creating meaningful structures to assess Internet-based information is a difficult but achievable task. By reading this article, I can understand the need for taking a careful approach to researching information with clear definitions and effective strategies that can turn knowledge into good decisions. Regular application of these strategies by use of Web searches should help anyone seeking information learn to direct a wise net as opposed to a wide net. Also, an understanding of the problem and solution can help many web researchers not only survive, but also thrive in the age of clutter.

Art Commentary. The F-111 by Rosenquist.

The lethal but astounding technology of F-111 fighter jet, stretching the full length of the work - from the deeply treaded tyre and the crater-like cake decorated with its ready-mix nutrients, past the diabolically sweet childish face of a little girl in a hair dryer shaped like the nose-cone of a jet and on to a rolling sea of canned-orange spaghetti. The content of Rosenquist's "F-111" reflects on the American society who was on a suicidal course with its mindless consumerism and military-industrial power.

"It summed up Rosenquist's vision of America as a flawed and self destructive Eden, a paradise based on exaggerated and obsessive consumption of images and things," As Robert Hughes put it.

F-111 was Rosenquist's personal reaction to the ideas of mass media and communication. The painting is overloaded with a discharge of images, which reflects on the mindless consumerism and the armed forces implemented in America in the 160's. Due to the influence of the Vietnam War many pop artists reflected on the American military as motivation to depict America's unsteady future. Emblems of every day experience blot out the sleek fighter jet in "F-111". Rosenquist is stating that whilst these planes are bombing Korea, and a war is being fought, every day life continues. It hasn't been halted by the horrendousness death and destruction, which perhaps suggests greed. He is also possibly stating that the nations mind isn't focused on what matters, reality.

Since the F-111 had minimal impact on its intended industry, death and destruction, we can now find the painting would also seem to ridicule the eventual ineffectiveness of technology. Lichtenstein, for example, painted belligerent yet tasteful images of dogfights, explosions and the essence of air-to-air combat (the infamous "wham" for example). This was a play on the folly within America's supreme military industry. How something that has cost millions of dollars to build, money that could be better spent on the debilitating derelict boulevards and the underprivileged society, can be destroyed with the click of a button. "I pressed the fire control…and ahead of me rockets blazed through the sky," says the pilot in section A of Lichtenstein's "wham".

It is obvious that Lichtenstein and Rosenquist have anti war elements in their work. But the antiwar significance isn't the main or only focus. Lichtenstein, with his stylish abstract dots and cartoonist insight creates a technique that entices the viewer using commercial fundamentals, for example comic books. He was also a feminist painter, and the mass consumerism and anti war elements is less, if at all, noticeable in other works.

Rosenquist on the other hand, has a lot more war reference with his most significant painting "F-111". However it seems to focus more on America's stance in commerce commerciality. Using things like canned spaghetti and objects of everyday use Rosenquist accentuates the meaning of America's diverse fluctuation in marketable goods and how they are of little meaning when it comes to a war or fallout of some description.

It has come to your committee's attention a letter by a former patron. Ms. Laura Bressner has expressed her dislike in the following areas

ɨ Poor front desk service (lackadaisical, wrong room type, rudeness)

ɨ Slow room service

ɨ Poor attention to detail

She has stated that she will not be attending your hotel again.

You have also received an evaluation from the High Stars Consulting Company, a leading international firm specializing in quality management programs in the hospitality industry. They have sent an executive summary based on the experience of four shoppers who stayed at your hotel for three nights in September of this year. The following areas have been pointed out as either being sub-par or negative

Reservations

ɨ One reservationist was addressed by their first name

ɨ Inconsistent offers of smoking versus no-smoking rooms

ɨ Extension of courtesy or "'thank you"

Arrival

ɨ Unreadiness of room in a timely manner

ɨ Complimentary drink never arrived while patron was waiting for room to be ready

ɨ Long, inconsistent baggage delivery times

ɨ Bellman made no introduction to rooms amenities or other information

Departure

ɨ During check-out, the patrons were never asked if they enjoyed their stay, nor asked about late charges, nor specifically thanked

ɨ A question on a charge on the patrons folio resulted in a 10 minute wait for any action to be taken

Concierge

ɨ A Federal Express package was received by your front desk at 5 am, but patron was not notified until 115 pm. A note was delivered under the door for the package and was never offered to have the package delivered to the room

Telephone

ɨ A long delay in answering an internal call at the front desk

ɨ A wake-up call was requested but never received

ɨ A voice mail was addressed to another quest was erroneously routed

Housekeeping

ɨ Poor restocking of guest supplies

ɨ Long waiting times for special request supplies

Room service

ɨ Long waiting times for breakfast…far exceeding estimated times

ɨ The ordering process was affected by numerous call-holds and by considerable background noises

Lounge Bar

ɨ Four out of five visits resulted in poor performance from staff

ɨ Bar service was hectic and available only to those who were assertive

ɨ The server pick-up area was incredibly untidy, yet guests often walked through this area

ɨ Dinner table was unclean

Although some service strengths were noted (listed below), the negatives far exceed the positives pointed out in her Ms. Bressner's letter.

ɨ Immediate, friendly curbside assistance

ɨ Delivery of on-arrival messages were effectively handled

ɨ For the most part, check-out folios were correct

ɨ The concierge staff, according to the firm, is your genuine strength…well trained, considerate and thorough

ɨ Generally, rooms were left very clean by your very courteous housekeeping staff

These concerns must be addressed and corrected immediately in order to ensure your comparisons them. Your goals should be to meet or exceed the standards of the Marriott and Sheraton Hotels. The Company should address each of these concerns as soon as possible. Effective immediately, I propose the following changes in your policy

Reservations and Arrivals

Hiring practices will change. Only the hiring of 'mature' front desk reservationists and other staff members. Attention to detail will be highly stressed to these new and existing employees.

Employee empowerment. For existing front desk employees, a -week course will be designed to enable these employees to effectively make on-site decisions, usually requiring supervisor approvals in the past.

Bellmen. All bellmen are required, and will also be highly stressed, to make clear the rooms amenities and the hotels services for each patron they bring to a room. The patrons bags will be the number one priority for the bellman, no time should be wasted in bringing the luggage. If any questions are further required, to contact front desk.

To help pay for this employee empowerment program, and the hiring of more experienced front desk staff, (which may translate to slightly higher pay), a slight modest pay-cut for middle management and up will be necessary (criteria to be determined).

Housekeeping and Room Service

4-Hour all-around service. Hallways will now be patrolled 4 hours a day by middle managers and supervisors on duty, to ensure cleanliness.

4-Hour room service. Room service will now be available 4 hours, daily. However, a limited menu will be offered. Orders not received within with a reasonable time will be served free of charge, therefore deducted from kitchen staff's pay.

Your revenues and profits may be down for the next 18-months, which I suspect how long the "makeover" will take. But in the long run it shall be worth it. Some cutting of the corners will also be necessary. Layoffs should be taken into effect, therefore putting more responsibility and labor into the hands of managers. The layoffs shall consist of night crews and the number of front desk employees. Since the overnight shift is usually the "dead hours", all front desk staff on duty shall assume the responsibilities of the cleaning crew in maintaining the lobby. Front desk calls can still be serviced by accessing the front desk line via the service phones in the lobby.

More capital shall be allocated to your marketing department to lure new customers into your hotel, and to ensure that your core weekend customers keep returning. Offering package deals, more creative radio spots and on-line reservation deals (i.e. 10% off room rates for all reservations made on-line, etc.).

Further implementations of policy's and policy changes will be addressed under separate cover.

Obviously, these changes can not happen overnight. These changes are not overly drastic. It can happen, we can make it happen. I ask that all middle managers, supervisors, directors and vice presidents make a sincere effort in putting forth these actions. Setting a precedent to your younger staff and "underlings" will be most prudent.

I am sure your mutual goal will be achieved in turning this hotel into what it once was and always shall be…a 6-Star Service Experience.

HARDEST CLASS

Government was the hardest class I have ever taken. There are many reasons why it was so difficult. The reasons include a noise problem, impossible homework assignments, and big projects. I passed that class with a 'D,' and I was happy with it. Usually I would be pretty upset if I got that grade in any other ordinary class, but this wasn't an ordinary class. I am very glad that I got it over with when I did.

For starters, it was very hard just to stay focused in that brouhaha they called a classroom. First of all, the students in my class were 0% class clowns. They would talk throughout the whole hour and made it so that the other people couldn't learn. In addition, the teacher had a quiet, laid-back voice, which didn't help. If I didn't pay close attention to what the teacher said the whole hour, I would miss something important. Listening closely was practically impossible with the whole class talking the whole hour. Also, the teacher must not have believed in yelling or getting after her kids because she would just keep talking through the others' voices. Her theory was that she said things once and that's it. To try and fix this I switched seats with one of the clowns from back to front, thinking I would be able to hear the teacher better. This helped a little but it was still difficult.

The second reason this class was hard were assignments called "current events" due every week. This is where we had to find a newspaper article and explain it to the class. These articles had to go along with what we were learning that week. We had to go in front of the class and expound it to everyone. This was hard to do, putting aside the fact that we had to dodge spit wads and paper airplanes; we had to talk about it for 5 minutes without reading it word-for-word. If we weren't up at the podium for at least 5 minutes or didn't explain it thoroughly enough we would get an 'F.' The teacher being strict about current events made it even harder. Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Hardest Class

Another hurdle were the tests and how often we took them. We would have two tests every week. Somehow the teacher would find a way to make a 50-question test out of just days of learning. Sometimes I could swear that we didn't learn half of the stuff on the tests. That was one of the reasons why the tests were so puzzling. There would be essay questions on every test, too. Our teacher was a former English teacher so if our essays weren't perfect then she would take off major points, and the essays were worth the most points. As a result, I would usually get a bad grade if not fail the tests. I would basically have to rely on my homework to pass the class.

An additional hard part about government in my eyes was memorizing the constitution. First, we had to write all of the amendments down. Then we had to take that home and memorize all of them in 1 week. It was hard for me to memorize 6 let alone all 7. When the time came we had a test over it. There wasn't one person in the class who passed that test. In addition, it was on the final exam too. That was a very difficult and frustrating part in government.

Lastly, the teacher assigned us to do a government video. The good thing about this was that we could do it in groups. We had to pick our own groups, and they had to be anywhere from people to 6 people. My group had 6 people in it. The teacher informed us that this video was worth almost as much as our mid-term exam was. This got everybody to do it and most people took it pretty seriously. Then she gave us a paper that noted all of the information that had to be on the video. I remember looking at the paper and my jaw dropped right away. There was so much information needed for this video. I knew that if we didn't have every little bit then we would be marked down a lot. We had to tell about famous people, famous memorials, places, flags, structures and much more. Worst of all, we only had weeks to complete it. So our group used the whole weeks we had and made it as good as we could. We ended up getting a c- on it.

Finally, the class ended. I was very worried that I had failed the class and was going to have to take it over again next year. When I found out my grade was a 'D' I was very relieved. I didn't have to worry about the annoying noise, difficult homework, and important projects anymore. I was so thankful that I wouldn't have to retake the hardest class I have ever taken.

The novel by Melina Marchetta "Looking for alibrandi" has got a lot of similarities to real life situations. The time that I read it, it really fitted in well with my life and I'm sure a lot of teenage kids life, because the main character and teenager kids have some things in common. For example we are in our prime years of school and we are experiencing new things in the world and at school. In this novel Josie Alibrandi tells the story of a year in her life. The scene, which I have selected, which is on page 8 chapter 8, is when Josie and her enemy Carly have a fall out and Josie hits Carly (violently) and breaks her nose. The reason I've selected this scene, is because this is the first time Josie calls upon her father for help. When her father turns up to help, Josie is very surprised. This helps them bond together and it is a very special time. Here the author is trying to tell the reader that family is the most important thing and when people need help they can always call upon their family. I totally agree with this view and that's why I have selected this scene.

The (extraxt) is mainly dialogue with some descriptive writing. It all starts out when Carly calls Josie a wog and basically tells her that she's a bastard. Josie doesn't like hearing it from a non-wog so; she hits Carly with her science textbook and breaks her nose. Carly's dad (Ron Bishop) threatens to sue Josie, and warns her that she better call her lawyer. Then to everyone's surprise Josie announces to Carly, Ron and sister Lousies that her fathers a barrister. In this scene the choice of adjectives indicate a scene of high tension; for example adjectives used are- clenched, passionate, desperate, violent and horrified. Whether or not her father will turn up. Josie had fixed views on this as she thought this- "I new Michael Andretti would never come to my rescue, but I prayed all the same". Finally a man with a suit and looking very sophisticated walks in. With great astonishment on his face Ron Bishop proceeds to tell Michael Andretti "your daughter has broken my daughters nose". With not acknowledging Ron bishop as "Famous" Michael makes a great comeback and says, " my daughter has inherited her fathers quick temper" then Josie has a quick word to Michael and tells him what happened. Michael's first reaction was "what the hell is going on?" Josie explained and pleaded for Michael to get her out of this. "Michaels mouth was tight with anger" Josie felt embarrassed about telling Michael what carly had really called her, so when Michael asked her what did she do to deserve a broken nose? Josie refused to tell him and said "nothing". This made Michael frustrated with Josie and said "oh great. I have to get you out of this mess after you hit a girl for nothing". What is significance of these words to those in the room and especially to Jose? Then Michael Andretti has a private word to Ron who he thinks is a creep, after 5 minutes they both came out. Ron bishop looking as red as a tomato orders Carly to get her things. Sister Louise was very pleased that there was no suing involved and she said she was very pleased to meet Mr. Andretti and helped Josie through the tough time. Michael Andretti looking very impressed with himself, smiles at Josie and walks out the main corridor, while everyone is watching Josie asked Michael "how was your day at court dad?" Although this is a scene of growing frustration for Michael he ends up convincing Ron to drop the charges.

In conclusion to this speech I thoroughly recommend this book to all teenagers, whilst Josie learned to deal with other people calling her a wog she prepared an answer that would leave them for dead and not ask again.

When she was asked or called a wog her response would be "I am an Australian with Italian blood flowing rapidly through my veins".
