R.E essay

In this essay I am going to describe and evaluate different world religions beliefs on suffering, the creation of the world, how God is thought as, own opinions of God and people's experience of God.

Atheist An atheist is someone who does not believe in God.

Theist A theist is someone who believes in God.

Write my Essay on Essay on world religons

Agnostic An agnostic is somebody who doesn't know whether they believe in God or not.

Free will Free will is when somebody believes that God has given people the choice to be either Holy and worship God or be bad and be punished when she/he is dead.

In Christianity, it is believed that God created the world in 7 days and rested on the 7th day, but scientists believe that the world was created when a huge explosion, known as 'the big bang theory' happened when two gases reacted and created the earth. Some scientists would say that this proves that God does not exist and that science is right, whereas if somebody believes in God and Science could say that the big bang theory is absolutely correct but would then question who put the gases that caused the explosion in the first place? At the moment scientists cannot really reply to this question.

The way the world is made people believe in God because it is too well organised that living organisms can live most of the time perfectly, and also the way the body is designed too well that in most human beings, all the systems work in perfect order and couldn't have been just by chance. On the other hand people could say that people who suffer terminal illnesses and pain in the world such as rape, murder, assault and other such means then God is a pretty poor design in their eyes. Also in Darwin's theory that people evolved from apes, then God would not be needed for such part of nature because one tiny molecule could have evolved and millions of years later here we are and perhaps we still haven't finished evolving.

A famous convert is St. Paul who on his way to Damascus to persecute Christians for not believing in his faith, then when he was stopped by a bright light and heard the voice of Jesus, telling him to not persecute but to love. Soon he became a Christian and wrote scripts of the bible. This could prove to be a religious experience but on the other hand it could have been a freak weather condition that temporary blinded him and being delirious thought that Jesus was speaking to him and some people could use both arguments for and against the existence of God

Some people believe God does not exist because if God does exist why does God not show compassion towards people who have done not much wrong in their life to die slow deaths, or watch people die slowly, and why are people who commit murder sometimes get away with this crime and the innocent person be murdered. Christians would give the reason that suffering is a test weather or not people walk away from the light of God because they believe that God has taken from them when they have done nothing to deserve such cruelty. Also believe that like Jesus everything that is bad and bring suffering, that something good will come out of it, like the phrase 'every cloud has a silver lining.'

In this world there is suffering and evil and people seem to doubt weather God exists and if he is all mighty and powerful why doesn't he stop this evil and life be peaceful, this is a view of an atheist. The views of a Christian theist is that it is a test of free will and that they can choose the light or walk away from it and choose evil. Also Christians believe that whenever the Devil causes evil in this world it is always defeated by God, in which good always beats evil.

I think that Science and religion are compatible because the big bang theory shows that science can be right but someone/something must have put this explosion in order to happen or make sure that it did happen.

In Islam God is seen as both immanent and transcendent. Muslims believe that God is not restricted by the world or by time and cannot be affected by this world. Also God is believed to be immanent in which God is compassionate and is close to all living things and loves them all and will help them in which ways God can.

In Hinduism they also believe that God is both immanent and transcendent. God is immanent because God becomes involved with humans through incarnations when God takes a human form and is involved with humans. Also God is transcendent because Hindus believe that God holds the universe together and he is also beyond time and space so God is transcendent.

God can take many shapes in world religions and in Islam and Hinduism this is how God takes forms

In Islam God is one and has no equal or partner in or out of this world.

In Hinduism they are the believers of polytheism in which there are many Gods in this world, e.g. Brahman is split in three, Brahma creates, Vishnu sustains and Shiva destroys.

God is also seen as personal and impersonal. Personal means that God is like a human and can be spoken to through prayer, it is seen to speak to God like this as more reachable. Impersonal is when God is a spirit or a force in which God cannot be reached or understood by human beings at all. God cannot be broken down God is an absolute power.

Believers of God can say different ways that they believe in God through either special revelation or general revelation.

In Islam Muhammad is said to had scrolls of the Qu'ran told to him and to recite by the angel Gabriel , this thought to be a special revelation in which God spoke to Muhammad through the angel and saw as a miracle.

In Hinduism Mahatma Gandhi told the people to protest about British rule peacefully and this God's will, this was general revelation because God has not spoke directly to Gandhi but in a way revealed himself as British rule soon didn't exist in India and India was independent.

In conclusion I believe in God but in bad times my faith is put to the test because when bad things have happened weather they are personal to me or not it makes me think sometimes if there is a God or not, and there is one thing that still makes me believe in God, hope.

THIRD APPARITION

Macbeth shall never vanquished be until

Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill

Shall come against him. (Shakespeare, 4.1.0-, 4.1.105-107)

But Macduff is not of woman born, and Birnam Wood does come to Dunsinane. Thus, in the end, Macbeth fights against fate (though he is not initially aware of it) and loses. His belief that he can change his fate, or at the very least know it, leads him to visit the Witches for the second time. In this work, as in Beowulf, fate can sometimes, but not always, be defeated. The idea that fate can be beaten ties the cultures and literary works of Beowulf and Macbeth together.

In most of Beowulf, fate is equated with Gods will. The first example of this is Grendels family being banished, thanks to Cain

He [Grendel] was spawned in that slime,

Conceived by a pair of those monsters born

Of Cain, murderous creatures banished

By God, punished forever for the crime

Of Abels death. The Almighty drove

Those demons out...

A brood forever opposing the Lords

Will, and again and again defeated. (Beowulf, 6)

As this passage demonstrates, God can choose to be a vengeful, spiteful being. If He chooses, He can banish a being for any reason, just or not. Similarly, Grendel cannot be killed by weapons, but must be killed by bare hands. Cain endures a similar fate Then the Lord said to Cain, No! If anyone kills you, I will punish that person seven times more. Then the Lord put a mark on Cain. It was a warning to anyone who met him not to kill him. (International Childrens Bible, Genesis 415) The unpleasant fate that God wishes upon both Cain and Grendel (his descendant) is the hallmark of the Old Testament God, the being that is here invoked in Beowulf.

But the God of Beowulf is not always vengeful. In fact, He is only vengeful towards Grendel and his kind. God favors humans, the Geats and the Danes. The people of Denmark trust that God will help them, as Hrothgar says upon Beowulfs arrival Our Holy Father/Has sent him [Beowulf] as a sign of His grace, a mark/Of His favor, to help us defeat Grendel/And end that terror. (Beowulf, 5) He later repeats this message after Grendels death. The Danes see God as a being who favors them, since they believe themselves to be good. It is this belief that brings them to see Beowulf as a savior. Beowulf himself places the battle in Gods hands Grendel is no braver, no stronger/Than I am!...Let God in His wisdom/Extend His hand where He wills, reward/Whom He chooses! (Beowulf, 44) Like Hrothgar, he believes that God will choose him, though he does not explicitly say this.

Hrothgars belief becomes stronger after Beowulf kills Grendel

Grendels terrible

Anger hung over our heads too long,

Dropping down misery; but the Almighty makes miracles

When He pleases, wonder after wonder, and this world

Rests in His hands. I had given up hope,

Exhausted prayer, expected nothing

But misfortune forever. (Beowulf, 5)

Hrothgars belief in Gods power is readily apparent from this speech. Thus, Hrothgar comes to believe in a benevolent God, more like the God of the New Testament. This is in line with Christian teachings, since Christianity itself is based on Jesus teachings in the New Testament.

Yet Gods will and fate, even in such a conversion text as Beowulf, are not totally synonymous. After Beowulf kills Grendel, the poet tells us that The monster would have murdered again/And again had not God, and the heros courage/Turned fate aside. (Beowulf, 56) Since God turns fate aside, God and fate must be two different entities. However, in most of the poem, fate works as Gods will. In contrast, fate goes against Gods will in Macbeth. Fate is controlled by the Witches, the Apparitions, and Hecate, the goddess of witchcraft. These are evil beings, and are thus expected to do the opposite of the benevolent Christian Gods will. Whereas in Beowulf, fate is often tied with God, fate in Macbeth usually goes against Gods will. A benevolent God would not wish to put Macbeth through the pain and suffering he endures.

Also, Gods will does not totally correspond with that of the Anglo-Saxon tribes. The Danes would certainly have wished to have Grendels corpse to display, rather than just his arm, and so would Beowulf

I wish

I could show you, here in Herot, his corpse

Stretched on this floor! I twisted my fingers

Around his claw, ripped and tore at it

As hard as I could I meant to kill him

Right here, hold him so tightly that his heart

Would stop, would break, his life spill

On this floor. But Gods will was against me... (Beowulf, 5)

Though God may favor a certain group of people, God himself has the power to do whatever he wishes. It is this power that makes Him, in Beowulf, a true agent of fate. Beowulf acknowledges this Id have been dead at once/And the fight finished, the she-devil victorious/If our Father in Heaven had not helped me. (Beowulf, 75) This acknowledgement is part of Beowulfs greater transition to a spiritual man. Through this, he begins to recognize Gods role in his life.

God fights against Grendel. But Grendel, being the monster that he is, will not stand for this. Grendel resents his fate

t was a cold-blooded lie that a god had lovingly made the world and set out the sun and moon as lights to land-dwellers, that brothers had fought, that one of the races was saved, the other cursed. Yet he, the old Shaper, might make it true, by the sweetness of his harp, his cunning trickery. It came to me with a fierce jolt that I wanted it. As they did too, though vicious animals, cunning, cracked with theories. I wanted it, yes! Even if I must be the outcast, cursed by the rules of his hideous fable. (Gardner, 55)

Grendel does not want to be shunned from human society. He wishes to be a part of human society because he wants attention. In his life before attacking Herot, he plays no role in human society. The humans pay no attention to him though they know that two creatures live in the swamp, they want no part of them. But as the monster, he has a role to fill in human society. A purpose in life.

Weak babies left to die and military training starting at age seven.

Sounds like a horrible and unfair way of life. But in Sparta this was all done for good

reasoning. Sparta was a very militaristic city-state therefore things such as leaving weak

babies to die and starting military training at age seven made Sparta the strongest military

force around. Close by this strong, patriotic city-state was the beautiful Athens where

individual freedom was strongly practiced. They had democracy, beautiful buildings and

many philosophers. Where would have been the better place to live, Sparta or Athens? An

examination of a very strong army, an oligarchy type of government, and the equality of

women and men will show that Sparta was a better place to live.

In 60 B.C.E, the Messenians rebelled against the laid back Spartans. Sparta

was successful in the end but not without using all the brute force they had. From then on,

Sparta decided that if they were to defeat any other rebelling armies, they would have to

devote all of their time to training a strong army. With a force never larger than eight

thousand men, they had the strongest army around because of the extensive training each

soldier went through. At age seven, each Spartan boy was taking from their home and

brought to schools where their rigorous training began. When the Spartan warriors were

between the ages of twenty and thirty was when they showed off their treacherous

training in the military barracks. In fact, Sparta over powered the Athenians when they

came face to face on the battlefield. Thus proving that Spartas army was more powerful

than the Athenian army and therefore making Sparta a safer and more secure place to live.

In the times of Sparta and Athens, there were three types of government, the

monarchy type, which was the normal system of rule and had a king as the leader, the

democracy type, which meant the people voted whom they want as their leader, and the

oligarchy type which, when translated means "the few to rule". Athenians were very

strong believers in democracy because they felt that democracy was the fair way that their

city-state should be run. Sparta, however; were strong believers in oligarchy which

probably made them the strong militaristic city-state that they were. With more members

of government to vote on issues of the city-state, there was a better chance that if a

member of society were to express an issue that their issue would be considered as a

result, the more members in the government, the more time there was to adhere to issues

and although Athens government was voted in, they may not have been the best because

they had only one person seeing to issues where as the oligarchy government had many.

It is a known fact that throughout history, women were never treated as

equals to men until the 170s though it is recorded that Spartan women were cherished

and treated just the same, if not better, than the Spartan males. The women were thought

so highly upon because they were the ones that held the key to their successful army.

Women were child bearers and the more women there were in Sparta, the more babies

they could have, and the more babies their were the more man power they had out on the

battlefield. Women in Sparta were the crucial part to the circle of life in Sparta which was

very important to their army and they were recognized for this. Whereas Athenian women

had no power what soever when it came to anything. Sure they lived in a democratic

society but they were not able vote such as the men did.

An examination of Spartas strong army, an oligarchy form of government

and the equality of women to men in Spartan society has shown that Sparta was indeed a

better place to live than Athens. Although Athens had many good factors supporting their

free way of life, Sparta offered a secure, well governed and equal lifestyle. Athenians

were free to do whatever they wished while Spartans were being extensively trained on

how to be the perfect Spartan warriors. Even with all known historical facts, it still

remains an individuals choice to decide which was the better society to live in. Always

keeping in mind that in order to win, one must lose.

Cousin Kate

The poem 'Cousin Kate' is about a young cottage maiden who falls pregnant b the 'Lord of the manor', she thought he loved her but he didn't and when he found out she was pregnant he 'changed [her] like a glove', now he is marrying her cousin, (Kate) 'bound you with his ring' and she is left with no' one because as she pregnant and not married no-one wants to speak to her and everyone where she lives thinks she disgusting an 'unclean thing'

The poem is written by Christina Rossetti and is set in the 1th century; the setting is a small plantation in a small village. The main themes within 'Cousin Kate' are love and relationships and how people can get hurt and let down easily by the other person. The cottage maiden's love I think was naïve but I think she did truly love him, he obviously didn't feel the same way and used her for what he could get from her, and he succeeded, he took he virginity from her and thought nothing of ending the relationship with the cottage maiden even though (I think) she was a young innocent girl. The relationship between 'Cousin Kate' and the Lord is true love, he has finally realized he cannot keep getting young girls into trouble and must be serious about Kate if he is prepared to marry her and as Kate is a 'good and pure' girl it is even better. Their love is described by the Cottage Maiden as being 'writ in sand'. I think that one of the messages in this poems was at this time is that society thought men were better than women and had more rights than women we can see this in the poem because the lord was just able to pick who he wanted and change the last girl 'like a glove'. The lord abuses his power because he knows that the women cannot refuse him because they work for him and would not refuse him because he is wealthy and they are living in a time of bad poverty.

The cottage maiden is feeling very hurt and bitter not only towards the Lord but also to her Cousin Kate as they are related and she was with the lord first and is carrying his child. Cousin Kate is written in the first person tense- from the point of view of the cottage maiden; therefore it allows her to express a number of opinions and feelings. Like I said above the mood of the poems is a very angry and bitter one, feelings are shown by the use of images such as the cottage maiden says she, 'might have been a dove' if she had not fallen for the advances of the lord. She uses the image of the dove in order to allude to her innocence.

Buy custom Cousin kate term paper

The similes in the poem work well in expressing the cottage maiden's emotions and help to create a an angry and sad mood to the poem, some examples of these similes are 'he wore me like a silken knot' this sentence links the treatment of the cottage maiden with treatment of discarded clothing, 'he changed me like a glove' this sentence shows how quickly and easily the Lord 'dumped' the Cottage maiden for her cousin.

In Cousin Kate we learn about a male character known as the 'Lord', we do not know a lot about him except that he is a very wealthy man 'palace home', when reading the poem I instantly thought that he was hard, cruel and had, had lots of girlfriends but no where in the poem does it say this I think Christina Rossetti uses a certain language when writing about the lord to make use feel this. He treats the cottage Maiden unfairly, she didn't get herself pregnant on purpose it was a much his fault as it was hers, so instead of leaving her to be a single parent and bring the child up on her own he should take some responsibility and help her instead of ignoring her and marrying her cousin! The lord has power over women, in particular he uses his wealth and charm to seduce the cottage maiden. Christina Rossetti makes us dislike the lord by using sentences such as 'he lured me' this sentence makes him sound like a 'dirty, old man' or a 'creep', 'he chose you and cast me by' this sentence shows that once he had, had his 'wicked way' with the woman he would just disregard her and pick another one.

The poem has a female as the central character, we don't know her name but we do know that she works as a cottage maiden and has a lord as her boss. She is presented to be a young and naïve women. I think that she is young because of things that describe her life 'contented with my cottage mates' 'not mindful I was fair' she fell in love with the lord but he used her, after she found out she was pregnant but he wants nothing to do with her or the child, she hates him for this 'I would spit in his face' but I think she is still in love with him, she is not only angry at the way he's treated her but she is also very hurt. She thought he loved her back that's why she is so heartbroken ' my love was true'. The cottage maiden is also confused she wants to know why he used and abused her 'why did the great lord find me out, to fill my heart with care?' she wants some simple answers to why she has been so badly treated. Its not only the Lord that has treated her badly because she is pregnant and not married the people in the village are disgraced ' the neighbors call me the unclean thing'. In the 'olden days' if you were not married and fell pregnant or single and found out that you were pregnant people were appalled, your family would have been ashamed of you and may even have disowned you! So a single parents fate was they would probably have stayed single because people were so disgusted with them, not had many friends and they would have been very poor. The cottage maiden in my opinion is a strong person, obviously she is hurt and upset but she doesn't seem to let what people think about her upset her a lot, she knows that one day the lord will want her child 'to wear his coronet' so she is just waiting for that time.

In conclusion, we can see that the poem has a good meaning it maybe sad the beginning as the cottage maiden was treated so cruelly and badly by the lord but in but in the end the cottage maiden will get what she deserves because she knows that her cousin Kate cannot have children so the lord will eventually (maybe) want to marry the cottage maiden because she has a child by him and he will want a son to carry on his family name and business.

Extinction is, quite literally, the end of a particular evolutionary line, the end of a species, a family, or a larger group of organisms. While it may be bad news for the victims, its a natural event in the history of life on earth. Extinctions, mostly at the level of species, have been occurring constantly at a low background rate, usually matched by the rate at which new species appear - with the result that biodiversity is constantly increasing.

But there have been periods in the Earths history when biodiversity crashes. Indeed this has been a powerful force in evolution, wiping the slate clean of up to 6% of all species, and providing the survivors with a world full of opportunities into which they can diversify. These are the mass extinctions, when more than 50% of the Earths species vanish in the geological instant of a few million years.

The cause for the Permian and cretaceous mass extinctions is still unknown by scientists, below is a list of possible causes.

A graph showing past mass extinctions over millions of years

Cheap Custom Essays on Mass Extinction

Speculated Causes of the Permian Extinction

Although the cause of the Permian mass extinction remains a debate, numerous theories have been formulated to explain the events of the extinction. One of the most current theories for the mass extinction of the Permian is an agent that has been also held responsible for the Ordovician and Devonian crises, glaciation on Gondwana. A similar glaciation event in the Permian would likely produce mass extinction in the same manner as previous, that is, by a global widespread cooling and/or worldwide lowering of sea level.

The Formation of Pangea

Another theory, which explains the mass extinctions of the Permian, is the reduction of shallow continental shelves due to the formation of the super-continent Pangea. Such a reduction in oceanic continental shelves would result in ecological competition for space, perhaps acting as an agent for extinction. However, although this is a viable theory, the formation of Pangea and the ensuing destruction of the continental shelves occurred in the early and middle Permian, and mass extinction did not occur until the late Permian.

Glaciation

A third possible mechanism for the Permian extinction is rapid warming and severe climatic fluctuations produced by concurrent glaciation events on the north and south poles. In temperate zones, there is evidence of significant cooling and drying in the sedimentological record, shown by thick sequences of dune sands and evaporates, while in the polar zones, glaciation was prominent. This caused severe climatic fluctuations around the globe, and is found by sediment record to be representative of when the Permian mass extinction occurred.

Volcanic Eruptions

The fourth and final suggestion that palaeontologists have formulated credits the Permian mass extinction as a result of basaltic lava eruptions in Siberia. These volcanic eruptions were large and sent a quantity of sulphates into the atmosphere. Evidence in China supports that these volcanic eruptions may have been silica-rich, and thus explosive, a factor that would have produced large ash clouds around the world. The combination of sulphates in the atmosphere and the ejection of ash clouds may have lowered global climatic conditions. The age of the lava flows has also been dated to the interval in which the Permian mass extinction occurred.

Speculated Causes of the End-Cretaceous Extinction

The End-Cretaceous mass extinction has generated considerable public interest in recent years, in response to the controversial debates in the scientific community over its cause. The more prominent of these new hypoteses invoke extra-terrestrial forces, such as meteorite impacts or comet showers as the causative extinction agent. Older hypotheses cite earthly mechanisms such as volcanism or glaciation as the primary agent behind this mass extinction.

The K-T Boundary

Evidence for catastrophism at the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary is found in a layer of sediment, which was deposited at the same time that the extinction occurred. This layer contains unusually high concentrations of Iridium, found only in the earths mantle, and in extra-terrestrial meteors and comets. This layer has been found in both marine and terrestrial sediments, at numerous boundary sites around the world.

Meteorite Impact

Some paleontologists believe that the widespread distribution of this Iridium layer could have only been caused by meteorite impact. Further, these researchers cite the abundance of small droplets of basalt, called spherules, in the boundary layer as evidence that basalt from the earths crust that were melted and flung into the air upon impact. The presence of shocked quartz - tiny grains of quartz that show features diagnostic of the high pressure of impact - found in the boundary layer provides additional evidence of an extra- terrestrial impact at the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary layer. Recent research suggests that the impact site may have been in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.

Volcanic Eruptions

The high concentrations of Iridium in the boundary layer has also been attributed to another source, the mantle of the earth. It has been speculated by some scientists that the Iridium layer may be the result of a massive volcanic eruption, as evidenced by the Deccan Traps - extensive volcanic deposits laid down at the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary - of India and Pakistan. These lava flows came about when India moved over a hot spot in the Indian Ocean, producing flows that exceeded one hundred thousand square kilometres in area and one hundred and fifty meters in thickness. Such flows would have produced enormous amounts of ash, altering global climatic conditions and changing ocean chemistry. Evidence that volcanism was a primary extinction agent at this boundary is also relatively strong. In addition, and the presence of spherules and shocked quartz worldwide in the boundary layer may also have been the result of such explosive volcanism. Thus at present, both the volcanic and meteorite impact hypotheses are both viable mechanisms for producing the Cretaceous mass extinction, although the latter is more popular.

The father, Sr William, were a oculista of European reputation (cured also Oscar of Sweden, that he was by proxy the godfather of Wilde), given over to its adventures gallants, had its career cut from a scandal, and died in 1876. The mother, Jane Francesca Elgee, had supported in youth the war Irish dell?indipendenza with written signed Hope collected to if a literary drawing-room in Dublino and then to London. Raised in the religion protestant, Wilde studied to the Portora Royal School di Enniskillen and to the college of Dublino where it asserted like latinista and grecista, and gained a scholarship for l?Oxford College, began here makes the infuences of the Catholicism sensitive, due also to the friendship with Newman, than it helped it to mature. THE LITTLE MERMAID A FEMINISTIC PERSPECTIVE

The children's classic, The Little Mermaid, as portrayed by Walt Disney Studios is wrought with feministic stereotyping and chauvinistic ideas. Even in animation, there are those that not only strive to push the limits of decency, but also sway the minds of the innocent viewer in the direction of their way of thinking. In watching the animated film in its entirety, the evidence is clear.

The opening sequence begins with the playful world of the sea creatures, and rapidly shifts to a contrasting first impression of humans as sea faring males that like to sing of fairy tales and display wooden women on their ships like a deer head hung on their wall. While singing their macho sailor songs of mermaids and such, they are completely oblivious to what it is like "under the sea."

Apparently, women are not seen much differently in the world of our heroine, Ariel. The first real glimpse of this under water world introduces the viewer to a world where females are put on display to entertain the king, like a cross between a harem and a Broadway musical. The star of the show, the beautiful, unrealistically proportioned Ariel and her angelic voice were not present. She wanted more and went searching for it. Accompanied by the young male fish Flounder, she comes across many treasures. The treasures she would find, were named by Scuttle, and old male bird, pretending to be a know-it-all, but is really a know-nothing. Upon her return, the immature Flounder busts her out for going to the surface, enraging her father. Even Sebastian, the crab and court composer seems to feel that women should do as their told.

The next appearance of our seafarers shows a more attractive side to the human men. Ariel was instantly attracted to Prince Eric. As the crew celebrate, a hurricane hits, and the ship is destroyed. Many of the crew perish, and had Ariel not been there, Eric would have been among the lost. She safely pulls him ashore. While hovering over the unconscious prince, she professes her love for him and her desire to be human.

Poor Ariel, everyone's a control freak. Even Ursula, the overweight, bitter, (sea lesbian) sea witch wishes to possess her. Ariel further rejects the fun-filled life of luxury, and King Triton destroys her stash of "gadgets and gizmos," which pushes her to unconventional means to an end. Ursula proposes the possibility of Ariel becoming human. Her very movements scream of pent up sexual frustrations and vengeance, seducing the naive heroine. Ursula bellows out that men are not interested in what women have to say, but instead are coerced by body language. Ariel follows suit by exchanging her claim to fame, her beautiful voice for a three-day pass as a human. She is then left to be carried ashore by her male counterparts, unknowingly naked from the waist down, with no voice to ask for help. Had it not been for a washed up sail, the approaching Prince Eric might have got a lusty eye full. Her first attempt at body language lands her in his arms.

In Eric's kingdom, the human women are portrayed as unattractive servants, gossiping like cackling hens. When Ariel's male guidance steers her wrong, she turns heads (and almost stomachs) at the dinner table. At the close of the first day, Ariel falls asleep as Sebastian attempts to teach her the proper body language to use to get the all-important kiss of man. The next day, her friends are insistent that the man is supposed to make the first move, and attempt to set the mood with a little song and dance. Meanwhile, the body language preaching sea witch calls the defenseless Ariel a tramp. The second day ends and our heroine remains only temporarily human. As he plays his soft music on the beach, the sea witch ensnares Eric using Ariel's voice and a conjured body. On the third day, she awakens to the news of a wedding, but soon finds it is not her own. Upon frantically emerging from her room, she finds Eric with another woman, whom he believes to have saved him from the shipwreck. Upon hearing the news of Ursula's deeds from Scuttle, Ariel returns to the ocean in an attempt to reach the wedding ship, and is again left to the mercy of males to get there in order to stop the wedding. When the action shifts to the ceremony, even the priest has a lustful mind of Eric's newfound beauty, or so the animators would like us to believe. Ariel arrives, regains her voice, and Eric returns to her side. Maybe he was looking for the whole package after all. It's all fun and games until someone loses their legs.

Ariel did not meet the requirements of her contract with Ursula, so she returns to her mermaid form, and is returned to the ocean. King Triton and the sea witch squabble over ownership of Ariel. Apparently, in the end, Ursula's taste is not only for ownership over females, but exchanges Ariel for her father, making herself ruler of the sea and the power makes her even more attractive. She verbally revokes the ideas of true love, while being destroyed by the long hard piece of wood wielded by the scorned Eric in an attempt to save Ariel from being zapped by the mean old pitch fork shaped cane of Ursula that had been used previously by her father to destroy her most prized possessions.

"Ding, dong, the witch is dead." Ariel is a mermaid, and Eric is once again on land. She mourns the apparent loss of her love, while her father contemplates what to do with her. In the light of fatherly decency, King Triton returns Ariel to human form, this time fully clothed.

Thanks to the wonderful animators at the Walt Disney Corporation, we are left with this tale of fantasy love and stereotypical mayhem. Are these the types of ideas we want our children to embrace or act out in play? It appears that some "poor, unfortunate souls" haven't quite embraced the thought of allowing women to speak for themselves and make their own waves in the sea of life.

High School, A Realization of its Benefits"

Leon Botstein, who penned "High School, an Institution Whose Time Has Passed," stating that high school is all "about cliques and the artificial intensity of a world defined by insiders" (page 47). It is easy to see why Botstein argues that high school is all about the image and fame since people are self-conscious about their status and respect. This is relevant to every high school in the nation and it is like a disease that has been infecting many people throughout generations. For example, the importance of wearing trendy clothing would establish one as a trendsetter. The difference of having on signature garments, like Abercrombie and Fitch, and economical-type of clothing, is the cost and the brand. Abercrombie and Fitch is more of a known company and have higher prices than a company that sells cheap clothing. However, Botstein does not realize that there are still student who

would rather be who they are and focus more on their studies than a temporary fad.

In this selection, Botstein also starts to highlight the social structure in the school system. He points out "insiders hold sway because of superficial definitions of attractiveness, popularity, and sports prowess" (page 47). The meaning of this statement is well relevant not just in high school, but also generally in this modern society. A student must not be blamed for whoever he/she wants to be, for one is liberated enough to establish an identity. For example, a student whose hobbies include football joins the football team. Many admire him for his remarkable talent. This student should not be condemned of this identity since it was done out of his own capabilities and not for fame.

Another of Botstein's interesting points is about the exposure of young students to certain elements outside of school. Information and images are now accessible to the public, with no regard to age, due to the technological advancements that man has made throughout the years. The webspace, for example, is an archive of countless information that is waiting for its victims to discover, including young adults. Botstein exemplifies that young students mature quickly for the primary reason that high school is "An institution intended for children in transition now holds back young adults well beyond the developmental point…" (page 47). His primary suggestion is for high school to be modified as he states, "Second education must be rethought" (page 474). Botstein typifies a kind of education with lesser years but of exemplary merit.

However, as a student myself, I still ought to have much of the guidance and education I could garner, even though I am mature enough to distinguish between right and wrong. Young adults, like me, still tend to get lost in this very complex and precarious world. A person still has to learn the basics of education, which are taught in high school, before proceeding into college. For instance, English requires that a college student should know basics of writing before heading to a more complex stage. Without high school's supervision, a student may not live up to the arduous criteria of college writing.

Despite Botstein's strong arguments, people have their own walks of life. His ideas are true, yet not necessarily applicable to everyone. Botstein could corroborate this article if he reveals whether this is his past experience of secondary education or a study he did for his current profession. It will also be better if he supports his constant generalization in his writing with a broad study of different schools, and not just this particular institution. Interviews and records proving his thesis would be helpful as well. As to the readers of this article, they should recognize that everyone has different experiences and point of view, and make a distinction if this is on a personal note or a study that has been accomplished.

Two short stories that have been effectively crafted to leave the writer with a strong

impression of the main character are, 'The Wedding Gift" by Thomas Raddal and "Piece

of steak" by Jack London. Both Stories evolve around entirely different circumstance but

show the journeys of the main character.

Write my Essay on The impressions left the main person in two short stories for me

"A Piece of Steak" is the story of a prize fighter called Tom King who has gained wisdom

but has lost his youth. His body was now battered and bruised, his knuckles were swollen

and his arteries no longer did the work. Tom is matched with a young boxer called Sandal,

"Tom was the grizzled old chopping block that guarded the highway to fame and fortune".

If Sandal managed to beat Tom he would go on to bigger and better things, if Tom won,

there would be food on his table.

Tom puts up a good fight, carfully calculating every move to make the most of his

diminishing strenght. Despite Tom's wisdom, Sandal is just to fit and his youthful

exuberance helps him overcome Tom. Although Tom is deeply saddened he holds no

grudges. He had done the same to Stowsher Bill twenty years ago and Bill had cried

afterwards like a baby. Fighting was business to him and there was one winner and one

looser. He was more unnerved about his wife waitning for him at his home that loosing.

From the end we get the impression that Tom is a man who accepts life for what it is and

this is shown by his battle with Sandals youthful exhuberence.

In The Wedding Gift, the main character Kezia is also faced with a troublesome task with

the same unlikelyhood of beating it. Kezia is forced to marry a man who nearlytwice her

age who lives in a remote fishing town some distance away. She has to travel to the town

on a horse in the snow acoompanied by the towns preacher. To her employers she is a

"colourless little creature, but quiet and well-mannered and pious,". Kezia may put on this

sharade but at other times she doesn't do everything a lady should. When out of view of

the preacher she rode the horse the way only a man was alowed to and did the unaccepted

act of bundling with the preacher to keep them warm. At the end of the story we see that

Kezia is not as meek as once thought and has been quite cunning. Instead of bringing out

the tinderbox to start a fire, she made them bundle together in the skins abonded in the

hut. This act showed the preacher sort of what he was missing out on. Kezia then

persuades him to marry her saying "Twouldn't matter if the young woman was your wife".

We see from Kezias actions that she is not someone who accepts life and does someone

through deciet to get what she wants.

Fom these two stories we see that one character accepts lifes harsh realities and another

character who won't accept he misfortunes and who does something about it. A Piece of Steak by Jack London

The Wedding Gift Thomas Raddal

Death is a fact of life and these days so are guns. TOday gun control is one of the vital issues on everyone's mind. With so many publicized school shootings the world is engulfed in the controversy of whether or not gun control should be stricter. Many believe we owe it to our children to have a stricter policy and others believe it would be a violation of out rights as Americans. I was in high school when the mass of publicized school shootings occurred and my school had even been threatened. When I have children I want them to live in a more peaceful place and not be afraid to go to school. I would hope everyone would want that. So the question arises, should there be stricter gun control? Will it make a difference in how many homicides and killings there are in the United States? Would stricter gun control make a difference or would the death toll stay the same.

You should always have the right to protect your family and that means you should be able to have a gun. Just think if you where lying in bed one night and were woken by a crashing noise in another room of your house. There is an intruder in your home and your children are sound asleep in their rooms. Don't you want to be able to protect them, if it's your children's lives or that of the intruders, wouldn't you pick your children? Wouldn't you want that protection by your bed where you can protect you family, it is your responsibility? This is a scenario that goes through the minds of parents all the time and this is one reason why people get guns for protection. This kind of thing happens on a daily basis. How many lives would be saved if only those people had guns that where killed by their intruders? How many people will die because their families weren't protected? Besides protection there are many people who hunt and shoot at targets other great usage of guns. These are two very popular sporting events that raise money, make job opportunities, and provide a stress relieve after days of hard work. If there is stricter polices what will happen to those who find pleasure in these activities. You would be taking away our rights as Americans. The second amendment states, "You have the right to bare arms." By having stricter policies on gun control you are taking away our second amendment our right as a United State citizen to bare arms. The fact is that people kill people, not guns. There would still be robberies and homicides whether or not there were guns. You would be loosing more than you would be gaining by making gun control an even stricter process.

On the other hand many people across the country or saying no to guns, because of the endless amount of shootings and killings at schools, the robberies, and the many homicides that have occurred. If there weren't guns in the houses of those children who decided to shoot there classmates there would have been no school shootings. After all if those kids had been carrying knives instead of guns there wouldn't have been those mass killings. People who own guns for protection are forty three times more likely to shoot themselves or a family member than an intruder. There are other ways to protect yourselves and your family, get a dog or an alarm system for your house. These are safe options and not as deadly. It's not really worth having a gun around because the truth is that the gun that was for protection will likely become a family members death warrant. The second amendment says that for military purposes you have the right to bare arms. The everyday man is not at war. In today's world we do not need a gun to survive. There is no need for us to hunt for our livelihood we have super markets. People with guns kill people, you can run from a knife but you can't run from a bullet. You are also more likely to get killed from a bullet rather then a stab wound. There should be a stricter policy on gun control for our children's sakes and for all our lives.

The bottom line is that guns do kill people but people are behind those guns. Without guns being around so much maybe there would be less killings. After all those who where behind the school shootings obviously couldn't have killed so many if they where holding knives instead of guns. The bulk of research done on gun control has failed to present a clear outcome. There are many factors involved in doing this research that makes the results so unclear. Such as the different ethnicities, religions, background, population, and economic status of the cities and the people behind the guns. Maybe one day we will find the perfect compromise. A more extensive waiting list, a special safety on guns, such as a special password, or voice activation, increasing the age you can get a handgun, or maybe people will just get smarter. Such as keeping your guns locked up and kept away from children and teach children guns aren't toys, they kill and they aren't the way you solve your problems. Then maybe we'll all get what we want, a more peaceful world to live in. Unfortunately there will always be a need for guns. Policeman will always have to carry guns and unfortunately there is always the possibility of war. I'm sure the illegal sale of guns will always occur. People will want to go hunting and shoot at targets, it is just something that will be part of our world.

Order Custom Gun Control paper

Will this world ever find peace, and if that peace comes will it be because gun control has become stricter or will it come with gun control staying the way it is. Can anyone really say that life would be better without guns? Can people say the world will be better with guns? It seems to me we need to stop the violence within ourselves and that will take care of gun control for us. As parents you owe it to your children to not only keep them safe but also teach them right from wrong. If you don't teach your children they will learn from someone else and they might teach them to kill. When you have guns in your home you need to be responsible. If you do right by the children of America who will one day control this country, I promise the future will be bright. So we have to find a way to exist and compromise, for I'm sure we all, fundamentally, want the same things. Our children deserve a peaceful and safe environment to grow up in.

The first tale is told by a Knight recently returned from the Crusades. Because the Knight is presented as a traditional, old-fashioned sort of fellow, it should come as no surprise that he tells a tale of courtly love. What is courtly love? This term refers to a phenomenon of the late middle ages when women were accorded an almost religious status, and the act of seeking a woman's favor took on the flavor of a religious quest. Ironically, however, while women seem to be central to the story, in fact they do absolutely nothing. The point of these stories was to show how women for men represented a metaphor for the man's relationship with the divine, and consequently in these works women function as completely static works of art. The man is expected to see the woman from afar and be smitten by her beauty. He makes some type of approach and is initially rebuffed. Generally after the battle, she accepts his love and a sexual relationship ensues.

The "Knight's Tale" reflects the courtly love tradition's idea of what the male's relationship to the female should be. This tradition saw women as objects to be revered and love as a game to be mastered, another arena for conquest just like war. The courtly love genre reflected in this story did not see women as free agents, or indeed, as agents at all.

In The Millers Tale Chaucer presents a side of the courtly love tradition never seen before. His characters are average middle class workers rather than elite nobility. Instead of being involved in courtly love there is some evidence that the relationship between Alison and Nicholas is one of lust. The Millers Tale is a parody of the courtly love tradition. But the fact that Chaucer uses the lower classes as his characters makes his story even more absurd. Instead of being wise they are foolish.

Whereas the Knights tale prizes morality and piety toward the gods, the Millers Tale values different attributes. Courtly romantic love is mocked mercilessly; Absolon, the one suitor whose behavior would fit traditional romantic standards, is the victim of Alisons scorn and receives only one vulgar kiss for his efforts. In the tale, Absolons romantic affectations mark him as foolish and effeminate. The Miller sarcastically notes how Absolon combed his curly blond hair to prepare himself for Alison, a parody of courtly love and romance for which the Miller has no use. The Millers tale prizes the characters who are the most shrewd rather than those who hold more sentimental emotions or obey traditional standards of behavior.

Nation states employ a variety of forms of power in the pursuit of what is considered in their national interest. However regardless of the forms of power employed by a nation state, unity and internal stability are essential so that it may achieve both its foreign and domestic objectives. The experiences of nations such as Indonesia and Papua New Guinea (PNG) in the Asia-Pacific region are effective platforms for discussion

Before any discussion may take place, the definition for the word "Power" must be established so an effective context may be sustained throughout this piece. Power can refer to the capacity that a state has to influence events. This is a measure of potential, and may include elements such as military strength, economic strength, geographical power and population size. However to fully achieve a nations goal it is often necessary to combine such power resources with power relations (Internationally and Regionally). . Other factors that are important in the context of a nation perusing its national interests include the ability of a nations leadership and its relevant support. However the effectiveness of many of these forms of power may be compromised if the nation-state lacks unity and is dominated by internal instability.

Since gaining independence in 175 PNG has employed a range of foreign policy instruments and forms of power in the pursuit of what is considered to be in the best interests of the nation state. Furthermore Papua New Guinea, in an effort to enhance the security and develop a viable economy, has developed stable and cooperative relations with the nations and non-state actors both in its immediate region and internationally. However over the years it is evident that the lack of unity within PNG has hindered its progress in pursuit of its national interests. Regionalism in Papua New Guinea is encouraged by the countries geography and the diversity of tribal and linguistic groups. The rugged terrain of the mainland has led to many groups to think of them as separate from the rest of the country. People on the various islands also often think of themselves as having a largely separate identity. The problem for the PNG government has been how to reconcile these feelings of separatism with its objective of maintaining national unity. This is clearly evident where the independence movement on the island of Bougainville has threatened the unity of Papua New Guinea. Although there is relative peace now, due ceasefire agreements the problem of whether Bouganville will remain a part of PNG still exits. The establishment of an independent entity would clearly be at odds of the PNG governments national interest, as it maintains that Bouganville (and its considerable natural resources) should remain a part of PNG, while members of the Bougainville Revolutionary Army and there supporters insist that independence should be granted. This highlights the deep divisions in the PNG's political arena, which in turn is having an adverse affect on national unity within then country. Consequently this lack of unity has hindered PNG's attempt to achieve its national goals, as was evident when of the act of aggression attempted by PNGDF against the BRA received severe international condemnation. This condemnation detracts from a PNG ability to obtain power relations (a power "asset") and therefore the lack of unity may be seen as a severe power "deficit".

The unity of a nation state also largely depends on the nature of leadership. A dictatorship may be able to act more decisively than a democracy in pursuing the goals of a nation, however the morale of the population may be greater in a democracy, which may be an objective of the national interest in itself. This has somewhat to a large extent been the case in Indonesia. The aspect of unity in a country of almost 11 million people is of prime importance to the nation-state itself as; it is obviously a key national objective. Indonesia to a somewhat greater extent then PNG has seen the effects of the 'lack of unity', as a result of more often then not religiously motivated regionalism. They're numerous active separatist movements within Indonesia, intent on gaining independence (i.e. Irian Jaya, Aceh and East Timor). Many of these regions offer potential power assets to Indonesia, such as valuable resources, which Indonesia would evidently want to exploit. Therefore, many of these separatist movements are add deep odds with the national interest of the state itself, and therefore limiting Indonesia ability to act effectively, decisively and as a unified state in pursuit of common objectives. As is the case with PNG, Indonesia has received large amounts of international condemnation, as a result aggression in an attempt to retain their 'power assets' i.e. (East Timor). This has stalled its progress and development as a viable nation state in the international arena, as the government is required to 'cater' for these separatist movement groups's interest, in an attempt to sustain the unity within the Indonesia.

The key to successful investing is to minimize that risk while maintaining an attractive return on the investments. One of the most effective ways to minimize the risk is to diversify. By diversifying the investments among stocks, bonds and money market securities, can lower the overall investment risk. Diversification can help even out price swings during the normal ups and downs of the stock market.

Many investors, understandably concerned about the future of the equity markets, are looking at alternative investment vehicles. For those who desire to increase the diversification in their portfolio in the hope of reducing their risk, fixed-income securities may be the answer mentions the article. All securities behave differently from one another, going up and down in separate cycles and to varying degrees. An individual stock is affected by a combination of different elements, including the overall stock market, health of the industry the company does business in, and the companys own performance. Though stocks generally vary more than fixed-income investments, fixed-income prices can be affected by changes in interest rates and the overall fixed-income market.

The author beliefs that equity markets, where stock prices are determined by factors such as anticipated earnings, market share, and expectations of future profitability that drive price, bond pricing is affected primarily by the current interest-rate environment. The author identify that the problem with adding bonds to a portfolio to reduce overall inherent risk is the possibility that the investor may lose principal within the bond portfolio if interest rates increase, thus defeating the objective of risk reduction. The recommendation of the author in relation to interest rate is that investors need to consider how to achieve an acceptable rate of return by investing in fixed-income securities without experiencing the higher risk associated with interest-rate fluctuation. They should determine what is the adequate offset of higher risk for higher return before they invest. Also the author adds, to minimize the impact of interest-rate changes, investors may wish to diversify their bond portfolios based on varying maturities.

The article mentions bond mutual funds as an alternative if current income is not an objective. Bond mutual funds offer the advantage of income reinvestment, allowing the investor to purchase additional bonds at current price levels. Funds vary greatly in their objectives and performance, which is no more guaranteed than investing in individual securities. Investing in a mutual fund eliminates one part of investment planning, selecting and buying individual securities that have the potential to meet goals. Also, mutual funds are highly diversified mentions the author. Each mutual fund share typically represents an interest in a mix of many different securities.

The practice of laddering a bond portfolio also provides a very attractive method of diversification cited the article. Laddering can be accomplished by purchasing individual bonds or bond mutual funds. Laddering involves building a portfolio of bonds with staggered maturities so that a portion of the portfolio will mature each year, or some other specified time period. The author's recommendation regarding this method is that investors requiring current income should ensure that the different levels of income afforded by laddering are adequate to meet their current income needs.

My recommendation is to meet with a registered investment professional to take a fresh look at the current asset allocation plan or check which alternative is adequate to meet the current income needs. Also, it is important to regularly monitor the investments to make sure that the original allocation has not shifted.

In summary diversification spreading the money among many different investments takes a middle road through the highs and lows of market performance, allowing money the opportunity to grow regularly with fewer fluctuations along the way. Also, the main reason for diversification is simple. By including a variety of investments in the portfolio, the risk is less than put all money in one type of investment.

International Trade and Regional Economics

As economic integration among nations emerges at the dominant mechanism affecting trade patterns, the global economy is rapidly evolving into a patchwork of regional blocs. International trade is no longer the exclusive domain of sovereign states; its sources are increasingly found at the supranational level, while its impacts are more and more felt in sub national regions. In addition, the increase in freer economic policies all over the globe has so undermined national authority that regional economics are inevitably opened up to international trade.

In this volume, David Hayward considers the issue of regional exposure to external economic events, exploring the role of trade in the performance of American states and regions. Using a shift share model to evaluate the contribution of exports and imports in the growth of U.S. manufacturing industries, Hayward focuses specifically on the case of trade with the European Community, analyzing the potential impacts of its deepening integration on trade with individual states.

Planners and policy makers at this level are increasingly aware of the international dimension and seek the tools with which to address it. That is why this book integrates three distinct topics of inquiry regional economic analysis of the U.S. states; international trade and the impacts of economic integration; and the European union's 1 program. Thus, it is an ambitious attempt to explore the interconnectedness of supranational and regional economies. Therefore, this book is a manifest in the global reach of production systems and in the terms under which local and regional economies are integrated into the global economy. The author states how recent years have witnessed a growing concern among state policy makers and scholars of regional economic development with the external dimensions of regional economies. The increasing globalization of the U.S. economy and its constituent regional economies has caused state governments to "go international" in their industrial development promotion programs. These efforts have caught the attention of researchers concerned with external trade's implications for regional economies, particularly such aspects as the foreign trade component of state economies and the relative export performance.

International trade and regional economics is an exquisite piece of work. it is recommended for persons interested in International Trade, especially businesses that deal with the European Union. Hayward tries to explain the impact that European integration brought on U.S. state economies. Given the U.S.'s dominant position in the world economy the re-emergence of the Western European economies was seen as an economic treat. Reading this book we can learn the opposite that the reindustrializing Europe provided a profitable market for both American Consumer goods and investment. Indeed, several firms like Ford and General Motors established continental-scale operations in Europe and gained great advantages in economies of scale over their European competitors. Hayward concludes by evaluating the different variations in states' trade experiences with the European Community.

An industry earning a profit will attract firms, thus the number of firms will increase. However, competition will increase as well, and this will cause the price of that industries product to fall.

c. Decrease Increase

d. Decrease Decrease

e. Decrease No change

. A firm is a competitive seller of output at a market price of $. The only resource required to create its product is labor, which is purchased competitively at a wage rate of $6 per hour. The last worker employed increases total output from 6 to 40 units per hour. What is the marginal revenue product for this worker?

a. $

b. $6

c. $1 (40-6)

d. $4

e. Indeterminable from the information given.

. A firm requires labor and capital to produce a given output. Labor costs$8 per hour, and capital costs $1 per hour. At the current output level, the marginal physical product of labor is 40 units and the marginal physical product of capital is 60 units. Which of the following actions would this firm undertake to minimize its production costs at the current level of output?

Labor Capital

a. Increase Increase

b. Increase Decrease

c. Decrease Increase

d. Decrease No change

e. No change No change (40/8)= (60/1), thus MP labor = MP of capital and costs are minimized

4. Which of the following statements correctly describe(s) a firm that is a monopsonistic employer of labor?

I. The firm determines its level of labor employment by equating the marginal revenue product of labor with its marginal resource cost.

II. The firm pays a wage that is equal to the marginal revenue product of labor.

III. The firms labor supply curve is more elastic than the labor supply curve of a competitive employer.

a. I only. MRP= MRC holds true for competitive and monopsonistic models, thus statement I is correct. Statement II is incorrect for the monoposonistic model because the employer, being a monopoly, can control the wage rate. Statement III is also false because a monopsonistic firm has a supply curve that is equally elastic as every other firm.

b. II only.

c. III only.

d. I and II only.

e. I, II and III.

5. In a competitive industry, suppose the marginal revenue product of the last donut baker hired is $5, the marginal revenue product of the last bagel baker hired is $15, and a bakery must pay donut bakers $40 a day and bagel bakers $10 a day. The bakery should hire which of the following in order to maximize profits?

a. More donut bakers and fewer bagel bakers.

b. Fewer donut bakers and more bagel bakers. Profits are maximized when the MRP (labor)= 1, thus in this example, the MRP (donut bakers) must equal 1 and the MRP (bagel bakers = 1. Currently, the firm is paying its last donut baker more than his MRP, and is paying the last bagel baker less than his MRP, thus the firm must hire fewer donut bakers and more bagel bakers, to maximize profits.

c. Fewer of both donut bakers and bagel bakers.

d. More of both donut bakers and bagel bakers.

e. It is currently hiring the right number of donut bakers and bagel bakers.

6. Although statistical data show that broadcasting revenues exceed the profits of most professional sports teams, thus suggesting that these teams could not operate profitably without broadcasting revenues, an economist concluded that this overstates the importance of broadcasting for team owners profits. How can the concept of economic rent be used to explain this conclusion?

a. If there were no broadcasting, team owners would not have to rent TV lines and their costs would be lower.

b. If the owners had to pay economic rent to players, they could never make a profit without broadcasting revenues.

c. If there were no broadcasting revenues, players salaries would not include as much economic rent, and the team owners costs would be lower. Broadcasting revenues represent a surplus to team owners. Thus, if broadcasting did not exist, the owner would not have to pay his players as much economic rent, because there salaries would be lower, and his costs would derease.

d. Without broadcasting, owners could operate as monopolies instead of competitors and collect enough economic rent to overcome the loss of TV revenues.

e. If there were no games broadcast, owners could charge more for tickets and increase the total amount of economic rent they receive.
