Mysterious events have occurred which made the people of Salem believe certain women should be accused of witchcraft. This assumption creates an atmosphere of tension and havoc. Elizabeth Proctor was accused of witchcraft because Cheever and Hale found a poppet in her house that had a needle stuck in her belly. "Abigail were stabbed tonight, a needle were stuck in her belly-," (pg. 76, Act II) This event made Cheever and Hale believe the poppet found in Elizabeth's house was a voodoo doll. Also, after Elizabeth heard that Abigail charged her for using witchcraft she said, "Why- the girl is murder! She must be ripped out of the world!" (pg. 76, Act II). This indicates that Elizabeth is really guilty and she is then escorted by Herrick and his nine men to the county jail.

Rebecca Nurse was also accused of witchcraft. The event that links Rebecca Nurse's involvement is that Mrs. Putnam's seven children all died on the day of their birth. Rebecca tended to these children. "Is it natural work to lose seven children before they live a day?" (pg. , Act I). Another strange thing is that none of Rebecca's eleven children and twenty-six grandchildren have died.

Another woman accused of witchcraft was Sarah Good. An event that indicates she is guilty of using witchcraft happened in the previous month. Whenever Sarah Good would come to the Proctor's house and beg for food, Marry Warren, their servant, usually turned her away empty-handed. Then Sarah Good would mumble to herself. One day, as she walked away ,Mary Warren felt as if her guts would burst for two days after. " And so I told that to Judge Hawthorne, and he asked her so, 'Sarah Good,' says he, 'what curse do you mumble that this girl must fall sick after turning you away?' And then she replies- mimicking an old crone 'Why, your excellence, no curse at all. I only say my commandments; I hope I may say my commandments,' says she!" (Pg. 58, Act II) However, when Judge Hawthorne asked Sarah Good to recite the Ten Commandments, she could not even say one of them.

The real reason why Elizabeth Proctor was accused of witchcraft by Abigail is because she wants to continue her affair with John Proctor. If Elizabeth is proved guilty, she will either spend a long time in prison or be hanged. This would make it easier for Abigail to win John back if Elizabeth is no longer a threat. I think Abigail framed Elizabeth to make Cheever and Hale believe she was guilty. In court, Mary (the Proctor's servant girl) was sitting next to Abigail, while Mary was making the poppet. She could have told Mary to stick a needle in it or done it herself. Then, she could have told her to place the poppet at a noticeable spot in her house, so Cheever and Hale would definitely find it. A true explanation of why Rebecca Nurse was accused of witchcraft is because of her land feud with the Putnam's. I think that Mrs. Putnam still has very sore feelings toward Rebecca because of their big war land feud and also because her seven children died on the day they were born. It is understandable that someone would resent the person who cared for their children who all past away on the day they were born. The real reason Sarah Good was accused of practicing witchcraft is because of her social status. She is a poor, old beggar that is a nuisance to their community. If she were found guilty, it would be easy for the town to lock her up in prison or hang her. They wouldn't miss her or feel guilty even if their accusations were wrong.

An atmosphere of revenge creates tension and havoc around Salem. Everyone is accusing each other because of the feelings they have toward a specific person. The accused do not necessarily practice witchcraft, but others seeking revenge see this as a good opportunity to place blame so they do not get accused themselves

One of the most compelling painters of the post war era Sigmar Polke is still an important politically edged artist today. Since the 160's Polke has experimented with a diverse range of styles and subject matter bringing them together with a unique and experimental range of different materials and techniques.

In a recent exhibition at London's Tate Modern gallery entitled "History of Everything" (which was originally held in the USA by the Dallas Museum of Art) Polke's work form the last six years is showcased. In response to the original Dallas setting for the exhibition Polke created several new pieces to be shown, including painting of shooting arcades and that of a gun seller. Throughout the exhibition are references to global politics as well as his interest in surveillance, authority, the breaking down of printing mistakes. In addition to those pieces made in response to the Dallas location are several works specifically referencing London, ranging from new examples of his 'machine painting' technique as well as new paintings using newspaper and magazine images. Throughout the exhibition Polke's ironic sense of humour is apparent, evidence of which can be found in two large paintings showing images of nudist colonies where unclothed people frolic in the country, a clever and whimsical look at the British contradictory attitudes towards sex.

Concentrating on the works created for the Dallas exhibition we can see the theme of gun culture coming through strongly. The West USA being very much stereotyped as having an extensive gun culture both for sport and more sinister activities. For that exhibition Polke had asked to be sent an assortment of Texan newspapers, which have served as inspiration for several of the works on display.

The piece "This discovery could have grave consequences for mankind" depicts an open packet of field pellets for an air gun and their heavily branded box. The image used for this piece looks as if it was taken directly for an advert for the ammunitition's manufacturer. This is an interesting point as the advertisement of such products helps to feed the gun culture in society by portraying the guns as an item of desire, that owning a gun should be desired and that to shooting a gun is a good thing and a meaningful pastime. The type face used to write the company name and the power wording for the pellets (Premier) are all chosen to make the product seem high quality, refined and for the discerning gunperson. This type of marketing plays on the poorer, working class person's insecurities to not appear to belong to the low income bracket. It is in the working classes that gun culture is most rife and by using this particular brand of ammunition it makes them appear to be of affluence.

The pellets that are shown are the type of ammunition young children could terrorise their neighbourhood with. Often the first type of gun a child will be given to handle will be an air gun that shoots pellets just like those shown in the picture. As such does the title of this work give us an insight into how Polke views this scenario? That these pellets are the stating point for a life long obsession with guns and violence? The way in which the pellets are displayed in a small tray like container and combined with the printing method of the images makes them appear almost like seeds. This is strange element in the most immediate sense in that seeds are organic and represent the start of life where as bullets and guns immediately bring up thought and images of death. However these smaller field pellets are like seeds, seeds that grow into something bigger and more dangerous. They are the seeds that plant the thoughts of finding fun in violence. For a child starting with these and shooting at small animals gives them the taste for blood and enjoyment in killing.

The title of this work also gives us example of his sense of humour. The irony in the title as the word "grave" implies death and the ammunition would not be suitable for killing but it is where the interest could lead. It is also a very light hearted and playful title for an issue that he approaches with extreme seriousness.

Many of these topics are also displayed in the piece "I don't really think about anything too much" where the gentleman in the piece is posing next to a field target, assumed to be his, looking very happy and satisfied. The field target itself is riddled with high scoring hits to the chest. Illustrating the pleasure people find in shooting a gun, the power it makes them feel while they possess one.

"Financial freedom while helping others" is a very bold startling image displaying many shotguns laid out on several tables for sale. It is a comment on the sale of guns and how they are sold often for 'the consumers protection', which just adds to the problem of rising firearms sales.

"Splatter analysis" shows the spread of shotgun shot on a test card. However the phrasing of the work's title is peculiar as splatter refers directly to a liquid for instance when a shotgun is fired at a human and the effect it has. It is a clever play on words that hides a distinctly more unsettling and disturbing message behind an already violent image.

Although not directly linked to the Dallas works Untitled deals with the USA as a whole and specifically the USA's politics and military actions. It is an example of

Polke's machine painting technique. Taken from a picture of US troops on their ship in

The Gulf of Aden playing Risk. The Troops are very likely to be on their way to Iraq. The caption from the original photo reads …played the board game Risk on a ship in the Gulf of Aden last fall. The object of the game is to dominate the world. Stephen

Crowley/The New York Times. This was clearly deliberately left in the work by Polke to show his opinion of the decision taken by the USA to take military action. The phrase describing the board game combined with the image Polke uses implies that it is not to be taken at face value. In fact, with regards to the image's caption, the same could be said of US politics at the present time. Trying to force out anything or anyone that will not side with them or bow to their pressure.

It would be all to easy to write off these works as superficial and purely anti American. However looking deeper into them reveals a witty yet informed, cynical take on the violent nature of a nations sub culture and a country's aggressive political stance.

Using the Internet as a research tool presents new challenges with information overload and problems obtaining and maintaining quality sources (Fornaciari-Roca 1). The Internet can be a useful tool if used properly and with enough information to conduct proper research. The article I have selected to critique; The Age of Clutter Conducting Effective Research Using the Internet. By reading this article, people looking to use the World Wide Web may find effective tools and a clearer understanding. On the other hand, the information obtained by the Internet might also be misleading or irrelevant and lack synthesis and analysis, which can lead to poor decisions based on information they have collected. After reading this article, I can relate with the material and clearly provide information of how the authors' styles are expressed in several elements from their perception to obvious fallacy.

The authors' direct statement and perception to the topic of research on the Internet demonstrated the ability to do effective but proper research using the World Wide Web. The emotion to this article affects the peoples' awareness to the difference between knowledge and information. Also, quality research can make a difference in knowledge obtained that can result in people making proper decisions. As the authors' clearly use the informal fallacy (http//gncurtis.home.texas.net/), Our daily lives are saturated with more data streams than at any previous point in history, and all the evidence suggests that the tide is rising." (Fornaciari-Roca 1) The problem may result in the collection of a large amount of unrelated and irrelevant data that contributes to the creation of knowledge or the support of good and bad decision-making.

I believe the authors argument is to realize the Internet is not an encyclopedia of actual facts, but a world of knowledge based on others research and/or data. Common sense is simply the synonym of logic and is obviously directed to those who use the Internet. Finally, the article states detailed sections of problem resolution. Below is a short list of what ideas the authors' are trying to establish

(Fornaciari-Roca 1)

Creating meaningful structures to assess Internet-based information is a difficult but achievable task. By reading this article, I can understand the need for taking a careful approach to researching information with clear definitions and effective strategies that can turn knowledge into good decisions. Regular application of these strategies by use of Web searches should help anyone seeking information learn to direct a wise net as opposed to a wide net. Also, an understanding of the problem and solution can help many web researchers not only survive, but also thrive in the age of clutter.

Art Commentary. The F-111 by Rosenquist.

The lethal but astounding technology of F-111 fighter jet, stretching the full length of the work - from the deeply treaded tyre and the crater-like cake decorated with its ready-mix nutrients, past the diabolically sweet childish face of a little girl in a hair dryer shaped like the nose-cone of a jet and on to a rolling sea of canned-orange spaghetti. The content of Rosenquist's "F-111" reflects on the American society who was on a suicidal course with its mindless consumerism and military-industrial power.

"It summed up Rosenquist's vision of America as a flawed and self destructive Eden, a paradise based on exaggerated and obsessive consumption of images and things," As Robert Hughes put it.

F-111 was Rosenquist's personal reaction to the ideas of mass media and communication. The painting is overloaded with a discharge of images, which reflects on the mindless consumerism and the armed forces implemented in America in the 160's. Due to the influence of the Vietnam War many pop artists reflected on the American military as motivation to depict America's unsteady future. Emblems of every day experience blot out the sleek fighter jet in "F-111". Rosenquist is stating that whilst these planes are bombing Korea, and a war is being fought, every day life continues. It hasn't been halted by the horrendousness death and destruction, which perhaps suggests greed. He is also possibly stating that the nations mind isn't focused on what matters, reality.

Since the F-111 had minimal impact on its intended industry, death and destruction, we can now find the painting would also seem to ridicule the eventual ineffectiveness of technology. Lichtenstein, for example, painted belligerent yet tasteful images of dogfights, explosions and the essence of air-to-air combat (the infamous "wham" for example). This was a play on the folly within America's supreme military industry. How something that has cost millions of dollars to build, money that could be better spent on the debilitating derelict boulevards and the underprivileged society, can be destroyed with the click of a button. "I pressed the fire control…and ahead of me rockets blazed through the sky," says the pilot in section A of Lichtenstein's "wham".

It is obvious that Lichtenstein and Rosenquist have anti war elements in their work. But the antiwar significance isn't the main or only focus. Lichtenstein, with his stylish abstract dots and cartoonist insight creates a technique that entices the viewer using commercial fundamentals, for example comic books. He was also a feminist painter, and the mass consumerism and anti war elements is less, if at all, noticeable in other works.

Rosenquist on the other hand, has a lot more war reference with his most significant painting "F-111". However it seems to focus more on America's stance in commerce commerciality. Using things like canned spaghetti and objects of everyday use Rosenquist accentuates the meaning of America's diverse fluctuation in marketable goods and how they are of little meaning when it comes to a war or fallout of some description.

It has come to your committee's attention a letter by a former patron. Ms. Laura Bressner has expressed her dislike in the following areas

ɨ Poor front desk service (lackadaisical, wrong room type, rudeness)

ɨ Slow room service

ɨ Poor attention to detail

She has stated that she will not be attending your hotel again.

You have also received an evaluation from the High Stars Consulting Company, a leading international firm specializing in quality management programs in the hospitality industry. They have sent an executive summary based on the experience of four shoppers who stayed at your hotel for three nights in September of this year. The following areas have been pointed out as either being sub-par or negative

Reservations

ɨ One reservationist was addressed by their first name

ɨ Inconsistent offers of smoking versus no-smoking rooms

ɨ Extension of courtesy or "'thank you"

Arrival

ɨ Unreadiness of room in a timely manner

ɨ Complimentary drink never arrived while patron was waiting for room to be ready

ɨ Long, inconsistent baggage delivery times

ɨ Bellman made no introduction to rooms amenities or other information

Departure

ɨ During check-out, the patrons were never asked if they enjoyed their stay, nor asked about late charges, nor specifically thanked

ɨ A question on a charge on the patrons folio resulted in a 10 minute wait for any action to be taken

Concierge

ɨ A Federal Express package was received by your front desk at 5 am, but patron was not notified until 115 pm. A note was delivered under the door for the package and was never offered to have the package delivered to the room

Telephone

ɨ A long delay in answering an internal call at the front desk

ɨ A wake-up call was requested but never received

ɨ A voice mail was addressed to another quest was erroneously routed

Housekeeping

ɨ Poor restocking of guest supplies

ɨ Long waiting times for special request supplies

Room service

ɨ Long waiting times for breakfast…far exceeding estimated times

ɨ The ordering process was affected by numerous call-holds and by considerable background noises

Lounge Bar

ɨ Four out of five visits resulted in poor performance from staff

ɨ Bar service was hectic and available only to those who were assertive

ɨ The server pick-up area was incredibly untidy, yet guests often walked through this area

ɨ Dinner table was unclean

Although some service strengths were noted (listed below), the negatives far exceed the positives pointed out in her Ms. Bressner's letter.

ɨ Immediate, friendly curbside assistance

ɨ Delivery of on-arrival messages were effectively handled

ɨ For the most part, check-out folios were correct

ɨ The concierge staff, according to the firm, is your genuine strength…well trained, considerate and thorough

ɨ Generally, rooms were left very clean by your very courteous housekeeping staff

These concerns must be addressed and corrected immediately in order to ensure your comparisons them. Your goals should be to meet or exceed the standards of the Marriott and Sheraton Hotels. The Company should address each of these concerns as soon as possible. Effective immediately, I propose the following changes in your policy

Reservations and Arrivals

Hiring practices will change. Only the hiring of 'mature' front desk reservationists and other staff members. Attention to detail will be highly stressed to these new and existing employees.

Employee empowerment. For existing front desk employees, a -week course will be designed to enable these employees to effectively make on-site decisions, usually requiring supervisor approvals in the past.

Bellmen. All bellmen are required, and will also be highly stressed, to make clear the rooms amenities and the hotels services for each patron they bring to a room. The patrons bags will be the number one priority for the bellman, no time should be wasted in bringing the luggage. If any questions are further required, to contact front desk.

To help pay for this employee empowerment program, and the hiring of more experienced front desk staff, (which may translate to slightly higher pay), a slight modest pay-cut for middle management and up will be necessary (criteria to be determined).

Housekeeping and Room Service

4-Hour all-around service. Hallways will now be patrolled 4 hours a day by middle managers and supervisors on duty, to ensure cleanliness.

4-Hour room service. Room service will now be available 4 hours, daily. However, a limited menu will be offered. Orders not received within with a reasonable time will be served free of charge, therefore deducted from kitchen staff's pay.

Your revenues and profits may be down for the next 18-months, which I suspect how long the "makeover" will take. But in the long run it shall be worth it. Some cutting of the corners will also be necessary. Layoffs should be taken into effect, therefore putting more responsibility and labor into the hands of managers. The layoffs shall consist of night crews and the number of front desk employees. Since the overnight shift is usually the "dead hours", all front desk staff on duty shall assume the responsibilities of the cleaning crew in maintaining the lobby. Front desk calls can still be serviced by accessing the front desk line via the service phones in the lobby.

More capital shall be allocated to your marketing department to lure new customers into your hotel, and to ensure that your core weekend customers keep returning. Offering package deals, more creative radio spots and on-line reservation deals (i.e. 10% off room rates for all reservations made on-line, etc.).

Further implementations of policy's and policy changes will be addressed under separate cover.

Obviously, these changes can not happen overnight. These changes are not overly drastic. It can happen, we can make it happen. I ask that all middle managers, supervisors, directors and vice presidents make a sincere effort in putting forth these actions. Setting a precedent to your younger staff and "underlings" will be most prudent.

I am sure your mutual goal will be achieved in turning this hotel into what it once was and always shall be…a 6-Star Service Experience.

HARDEST CLASS

Government was the hardest class I have ever taken. There are many reasons why it was so difficult. The reasons include a noise problem, impossible homework assignments, and big projects. I passed that class with a 'D,' and I was happy with it. Usually I would be pretty upset if I got that grade in any other ordinary class, but this wasn't an ordinary class. I am very glad that I got it over with when I did.

For starters, it was very hard just to stay focused in that brouhaha they called a classroom. First of all, the students in my class were 0% class clowns. They would talk throughout the whole hour and made it so that the other people couldn't learn. In addition, the teacher had a quiet, laid-back voice, which didn't help. If I didn't pay close attention to what the teacher said the whole hour, I would miss something important. Listening closely was practically impossible with the whole class talking the whole hour. Also, the teacher must not have believed in yelling or getting after her kids because she would just keep talking through the others' voices. Her theory was that she said things once and that's it. To try and fix this I switched seats with one of the clowns from back to front, thinking I would be able to hear the teacher better. This helped a little but it was still difficult.

The second reason this class was hard were assignments called "current events" due every week. This is where we had to find a newspaper article and explain it to the class. These articles had to go along with what we were learning that week. We had to go in front of the class and expound it to everyone. This was hard to do, putting aside the fact that we had to dodge spit wads and paper airplanes; we had to talk about it for 5 minutes without reading it word-for-word. If we weren't up at the podium for at least 5 minutes or didn't explain it thoroughly enough we would get an 'F.' The teacher being strict about current events made it even harder. Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Hardest Class

Another hurdle were the tests and how often we took them. We would have two tests every week. Somehow the teacher would find a way to make a 50-question test out of just days of learning. Sometimes I could swear that we didn't learn half of the stuff on the tests. That was one of the reasons why the tests were so puzzling. There would be essay questions on every test, too. Our teacher was a former English teacher so if our essays weren't perfect then she would take off major points, and the essays were worth the most points. As a result, I would usually get a bad grade if not fail the tests. I would basically have to rely on my homework to pass the class.

An additional hard part about government in my eyes was memorizing the constitution. First, we had to write all of the amendments down. Then we had to take that home and memorize all of them in 1 week. It was hard for me to memorize 6 let alone all 7. When the time came we had a test over it. There wasn't one person in the class who passed that test. In addition, it was on the final exam too. That was a very difficult and frustrating part in government.

Lastly, the teacher assigned us to do a government video. The good thing about this was that we could do it in groups. We had to pick our own groups, and they had to be anywhere from people to 6 people. My group had 6 people in it. The teacher informed us that this video was worth almost as much as our mid-term exam was. This got everybody to do it and most people took it pretty seriously. Then she gave us a paper that noted all of the information that had to be on the video. I remember looking at the paper and my jaw dropped right away. There was so much information needed for this video. I knew that if we didn't have every little bit then we would be marked down a lot. We had to tell about famous people, famous memorials, places, flags, structures and much more. Worst of all, we only had weeks to complete it. So our group used the whole weeks we had and made it as good as we could. We ended up getting a c- on it.

Finally, the class ended. I was very worried that I had failed the class and was going to have to take it over again next year. When I found out my grade was a 'D' I was very relieved. I didn't have to worry about the annoying noise, difficult homework, and important projects anymore. I was so thankful that I wouldn't have to retake the hardest class I have ever taken.

The novel by Melina Marchetta "Looking for alibrandi" has got a lot of similarities to real life situations. The time that I read it, it really fitted in well with my life and I'm sure a lot of teenage kids life, because the main character and teenager kids have some things in common. For example we are in our prime years of school and we are experiencing new things in the world and at school. In this novel Josie Alibrandi tells the story of a year in her life. The scene, which I have selected, which is on page 8 chapter 8, is when Josie and her enemy Carly have a fall out and Josie hits Carly (violently) and breaks her nose. The reason I've selected this scene, is because this is the first time Josie calls upon her father for help. When her father turns up to help, Josie is very surprised. This helps them bond together and it is a very special time. Here the author is trying to tell the reader that family is the most important thing and when people need help they can always call upon their family. I totally agree with this view and that's why I have selected this scene.

The (extraxt) is mainly dialogue with some descriptive writing. It all starts out when Carly calls Josie a wog and basically tells her that she's a bastard. Josie doesn't like hearing it from a non-wog so; she hits Carly with her science textbook and breaks her nose. Carly's dad (Ron Bishop) threatens to sue Josie, and warns her that she better call her lawyer. Then to everyone's surprise Josie announces to Carly, Ron and sister Lousies that her fathers a barrister. In this scene the choice of adjectives indicate a scene of high tension; for example adjectives used are- clenched, passionate, desperate, violent and horrified. Whether or not her father will turn up. Josie had fixed views on this as she thought this- "I new Michael Andretti would never come to my rescue, but I prayed all the same". Finally a man with a suit and looking very sophisticated walks in. With great astonishment on his face Ron Bishop proceeds to tell Michael Andretti "your daughter has broken my daughters nose". With not acknowledging Ron bishop as "Famous" Michael makes a great comeback and says, " my daughter has inherited her fathers quick temper" then Josie has a quick word to Michael and tells him what happened. Michael's first reaction was "what the hell is going on?" Josie explained and pleaded for Michael to get her out of this. "Michaels mouth was tight with anger" Josie felt embarrassed about telling Michael what carly had really called her, so when Michael asked her what did she do to deserve a broken nose? Josie refused to tell him and said "nothing". This made Michael frustrated with Josie and said "oh great. I have to get you out of this mess after you hit a girl for nothing". What is significance of these words to those in the room and especially to Jose? Then Michael Andretti has a private word to Ron who he thinks is a creep, after 5 minutes they both came out. Ron bishop looking as red as a tomato orders Carly to get her things. Sister Louise was very pleased that there was no suing involved and she said she was very pleased to meet Mr. Andretti and helped Josie through the tough time. Michael Andretti looking very impressed with himself, smiles at Josie and walks out the main corridor, while everyone is watching Josie asked Michael "how was your day at court dad?" Although this is a scene of growing frustration for Michael he ends up convincing Ron to drop the charges.

In conclusion to this speech I thoroughly recommend this book to all teenagers, whilst Josie learned to deal with other people calling her a wog she prepared an answer that would leave them for dead and not ask again.

When she was asked or called a wog her response would be "I am an Australian with Italian blood flowing rapidly through my veins".

The Lord of the Rings The Two Towers by J.R.R Tolkien is the second part of The Lord of the Rings, an incredible story loved by millions. It continues from the first part, The Fellowship of the Ring, and ends in the final part, Return of the King. There are two sections to the story, one revolving around Aragorn, Legolas, and other members of the Fellowship, and the other around Frodo and his faithful friend Sam. Each part can be read as a separate book, each with their own climax and a resolution of some sort.

In the first half of the book, you read of Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimlis journey to find Merry and Pippin, who were captured by the hoardes of orcs in Amon Hen. This leads them into Fangorn Forest, where they have their reunion with Gandalf, and they ride to Rohan. In Rohan Gandalf releases Theoden from Sarumans dark grasp, and leaves to find the men who had deported sometime before. The rest ride to Helms Deep, where a massive battle against the orcs is fought, along with the help of the men Gandalf recovers and a mass of Ents. They wipe the orcs out, and the living men go on to the Tower of Orthanc, where Saruman sits waiting. However, he is trapped because Treebeard and a large number of Ents had laid waste to the grounds around Orthanc, and were keeping watch over him. Wormtongue, one of Sarumans servants, foolishly throws the Palantir from a window. The Adventurers depart, leaving the Ents to guard Orthanc as the make for Minas Tirith. (Tolkien, pp. 17-4) The other side of the story, Frodos, begins on the outskirts of the evil lands of Mordor. Here they begin their lone journey to take the Ring to Mount Doom to be destroyed. They meet Smeagol, or Gollum as he is more commonly known, who tries to take the Ring from Frodo, but they stop him and take him in as a guide. He takes them through the Dead Marshes, and to the Black Gate. They find it closed, and move in another direction around the center of Mordor towards Cirith Ungol. The run into Faramir, Boromirs brother, who takes them to a fortress in the woods. Smeagol goes fishing in the Forbidden Pool, and is almost killed for it, but Frodo protects him. From there Smeagol takes them to the black passes of Cirith Ungol, and into Shelobs cave. Frodo is almost killed by Shelob, a massive spider, but Sam bravely fight her off, leaving her with a gaping hole in her abdomen. Sam mistakes Frodo for dead, and takes the Ring. As he is leaving, orcs come and take Frodo, and in the end he discovers that Frodo is alive but the enemy has him. (Tolkien, pp. 47-415)

The theme that J.R.R Tolkien was trying to portray was one of the character of mankind. His message is that there are many different kinds of people in the world, the good and the bad being the most common, and the effects these character traits have in the world. The good, are of course, the courageous people that fight for the future of Middle-Earth, the joyous hobbits of the Shire, and the general kind-hearted citizens of the world. They are the kind of people who live just for the sake of living, and just try to live happily among their neighbors. They fight only when it is needed, never for conquest or sport. Examples of these kind of people would be the nine members of the Fellowship, who are on a journey to put an end to a great evil. The bad are the people who try to control others, twisting peoples minds to their liking, and the people who betray others for their own benefit. They are the people who have hearts full of greed and malice, and strive for their own goals. They kill needlessly to spread their dark influences, and use fear to their advantage. Examples of these kind of people in the book are Saruman, Wormtongue, and Sauron. J.R.R Tolkien puts the good things and the bad things of society together to form a world we would understand. He portrays the human heart and how different it can be from person to person quite well, at least I thought so.

One of the characters in the story is Aragorn, son of Arathorn, also known as Strider. He is a descendant of Isildur, the hero who cut the Ring from the hand of Sauron. He receives the duty of escorting Frodo in Rivendell, where the Fellowship is formed. There he also receives the restored sword of Elendil, the sword that cut the Ring from the hand of Sauron. In the first book, Tolkien describes Aragorn as a tall, strong Ranger with long dark hair. Aragorn is a valiant warrior, and he lets it show when he battles orcs in Amon Hen and Helms Deep. He is a born leader, and fights only for good. He is well educated in the ways of the adventurer, skilled in the use of herbs and weapons. He is as determined of a person as there is, and hell never give up. He rarely talks, but when he does he speaks words of wisdom that aid his listeners. He tells tales all of his olden tales to his friends. Other characters look up to him as a leader, and they follow him to the end. He holds a certain precense in a room, like he has an aura of power surrounding him. He is one of the people who ultimately keep Middle-Earth alive.

Help with essay on The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers The Lord of the Rings is set in an imaginay land called Middle-Earth. The time is like a medieval time period, with knights and archers, before there was electricity or any modern technology. The land is filled with magic and creatures of all shapes and sizes, creatures that we wuld find unimaginable. The majority of Middle-Earth, the lands of Gondor, Rohan, and other such places are vast, beautiful places thriving with life. Others, such as the dark land of Mordor, are nothing but a burning wasteland filled with vile, bloodthirsty creatures. The setting greatly influences the plot, because it fits the storyline so perfectly. Also, Tolkien writes of the places so well that they place a vivid image of the incredible worlds he designed in his mind. The incredible beauty I see in Middle-Earth as I imagine it is unmatched by anything here on the real earth.

I was quite pleased upon finishing this book, and am already reading the third part. I found that Tolkien, in all his books, has created a truly amazing world that keeps the reader glued to the pages. I was constantly reading until I finished it. Tolkien has a way with books in this time period, which are my favorite. I would definitely recommend this book to readers of all ages, because it is a true classic and touches both the heart and mind in a way youll never forget.

1) My understanding of the paper

Executive compensation has generated controversy related between the executive pay and the firm performance.

The lack of relationship has led to calls from for reform from various organizations (stakeholders, shareholders, etc.)

Linking compensation to objectives and performance measures emphasises short term profitability at the expense of the long term viability.

The base of evaluation market v/s accounting might be different in the way of evaluating performance strategically.

Combined ownership and control the incentive is not a threat because the manager is at the same time the owner. The principle of profit maximization is assumed to be sufficient to motivate and guide managers.

The separation of ownership and control are resumed in that the professional managers hold a small or in some cases none of the firm's equity.

Pay for performance is a double edged sword, it has been found that CEO wealth changes $.5 for every $1.000 in shareholders wealth. The level of executive's compensation is driven by firm size than by performance.

The governance problems will result in compensations based in high fixed salaries.

Performance based strategy will be based in accounting incentives and stock market incentive, both have been criticized for the emphasis on the short term and the effect on the decision horizons.

The use of balance scorecard that adds alternative criteria to evaluate has been used lately, the problem is the difficult and cost to use this system.

Accounting based compensation

The problem with accounting is that it reflects the past and not the impact on future decision, so using accounting is only effective in firms where the cash flow tends to be stable. Accounting is also useful where cost containments and operational efficiency are crucial.

Also the reason that accounting returns are allocable to lines of business they might be useful in diversified or multi-business firms.

Accounting will be useful in companies that pursue the following strategies

- cost leadership strategies

- slow and standard cycle resource profiles (protected by patents, regulations, or mass production technology, etc.)

- unrelated diversification strategies (the use of intense financial control)

- highly leveraged capital structures

Stock market based compensation

They generate a managerial myopia due to the pressure of the investors and other in the decision-making.

If investment in R&D will reflect in share price then the utilization of stock market incentives can be used.

Using market-based incentives is useful when the following strategies are used

- differentiation (competitive advantage by charging a premium price)

- fast cycle resource profile (rapid technological changes and innovation)

- high growth industries (rapid demand driven growth)

- related diversification strategies ((business units that operate in similar industries)

- restructuring strategies (spin offs)

Differed compensation and firm strategies

This is basically tomorrow payoff for today's performance. It has advantages hat it postpones the payment of taxes. They postpone income during the initial stages for a increase as there carers progress.

Stock operation serves as an example.

The firm strategy must be considered especially when the long terms and well-being are part of the company's strategy.

A combination of these schemes might be used but the most important thing to do is to identify the company's strategy.

) My local view

The models explained above are somehow limited locally due to existing law. Basically a major share holder cant received a salary (fixed or variable income) if he is working as an executive or manager of the company regardless the time dedicated to the job (full time or partial). The law clearly states that he can make anticipated withdrawals against profit but no salary is allowed.

In some cases this can be solved by legal structures that can only be agreed when the concentration of the ownership of the company is limited to a close circle. Also there are some cases where there are preferred shares that allow to control.

It is also not allowed under the existing law to give shares to someone and after they leave the company to return the shares.

A combination of accounting ands stock based compensation in line with the company's objectives is used manly in international companies or big ones. In the medium to small ones what is normally found is a fix salary with a bonus linked to accounting results.

The above is also related with the local culture that is clearly adverse to risk, so they prefer to have a fixed salary and be certain that it will be paid monthly and that the goals are clearly set.

Also restrictions imposed by law, the rigidity of the labour law (where a big effort in order to make it more flexible is being done) play against variable structures (the indemnity of firing someone will be calculated on the past months salaries).

) My experience

In our office (a reinsurance broker) we have people of different educational levels and cultures working.

Being a small office with 8 people working income and production is in everyone's mind so a good year is know by all of the office member as well as bad one.

There are no secrets regarding income as well as the offices profit.

Regarding salaries for the admin's we pay high above market (more than 50%) with lots of additional benefits and we did include a variable part (that was not asked by them) in order to compensate them for the good company's result.

Our general manager (also the local owner) has a small fixed salary (10% of his income) and his major income is out of the company's results. Due to the nature of the business the income is deferred in some cases in a year so a long term view is necessary.

As a result of that we are one of the few brokers with a stable base of client and our growth has been consistent over time increasing the owners profit with a stable and steady growth.

The vibrations from an earthquake are transmitted into the structure of the building. The way the building behaves depends on the natural frequency of the structure. For example, in some cases the building will sway in sync with the vibrations. When this occurs, each oscillation of the structure builds on the one before causing the amount the building deflects to increase. In other cases, the sway of the building is not in sync with the vibrations of the ground. In such cases, consecutive movements of the ground may actually decrease the amount the building moves. Since a buildings height and structural characteristics dictate its natural frequency, it is possible for tall buildings to fair better than short buildings during an earthquake. A simple device can be built to demonstrate this concept. Use a 14 long x4 as a base. Cut four lengths of 1/4 wood dowel, each having a different length. The shortest should be about 1 long and the longest about 6 long. The other two dowels can have lengths somewhere in between. Drill equally space holes in the x4 base and insert the dowels. The order is not important. Next, drill 1/4 holes in four old tennis balls and place one over the end of each dowel. Using a smooth motion with an amplitude of about 4, push the apparatus back-and-forth and observe how each ball/dowel behaves. You should notice that the ball on top of the tall dowel may not move as much as the ball on top of a shorter one. Try smaller or larger amplitudes and different frequencies (back-and-forth speeds). Do the balls behave differently? As for being safer in a taller building, there is no way of being sure. Each building and each earthquake will have their own natural frequency. Sometimes they may match and other times they may not. To be safe during an earthquake, stay away from glass objects and heavy things such as bookcases and filing cabinets. Always try to stand under a door frame since they tend to provide support for the ceiling. A pendulum is a simple potential energy (PE) and kinetic energy (KE) device. Once you start the pendulum bob moving you have defined the total energy of the system. The total energy is related to the height of the bob when it was released. As the pendulum moves towards the bottom of the swing (height decreases) it speeds up so the total energy of the system remains constant (PE decreases and KE increases). When you shorten the string as the bob swings, the system energy must stay the same due to the conservation of energy. If the string is shorter, the bob must swing up to a greater angle in order to maintain the same PE. Since the linear velocity of the bob is a function of the sting length, the bob must move faster to maintain the same KE at the bottom of the swing. As a result, the pendulum will swing higher and faster as the string is shortened. The reverse happens when the string is made longer. If you perform a careful experiment to explore this concept you may notice that they system does not behave exactly as theory would predict. This is due in part to losses such as friction and air resistance. The Guide to Developing a Model Rocket Simulation outlines how to write a simple computer simulation for a pendulum. You could use the computer simulation to conduct virtual experiments on pendulums.

There are several reasons why a diverse workforce will add value to a company. Most businesses, either large or small, work on a global scale; the information age has brought the entire world a lot closer. Having associates that can deal with different cultures around the world is crucial to an expanding business. A diverse workforce will help to build more rounded individuals with experience they will gain from a mixed environment. Customers will benefit from the diverse workforce because a company that makes a choice to be open and flexible with its associates will more than likely be easy to work with in a business relationship. Probably the most important aspect of having a diverse workforce is the vast knowledge gained by pooling of the different life lessons, cultures and experience together allowing everyone the chance to learn new and different business practices.

The Army and Air Force Exchange Service defines diversity as valuing the concerns and desires of both the workforce and customers by establishing a common bond with them, where the individual uniqueness is appreciated and differences are respected. Diversity promotes a corporate community and harmony, which maximizes personal talents and experiences, responds to the needs of all associates and enriches the climate for customers and associate satisfaction (AAFES. 00). As a worldwide corporation AAFES certainly knows the value of a diversified workforce. Each part of the world they operate in has its own set of cultural significances which need to have a workforce that can handle those differences but also maintain the standards of the company. They have formed a strong workforce despite the diversity they are faced with because they have trained their associates to have respect for individual differences.

The Freeman Institute offers seminars to companies looking to increase their insight and train their associates in the area of diversity. Their Philosophy in presenting the subject of diversity is best understood when considering an onion with its many layers. Each layer presents another opportunity to discuss the best ways to work together with greater harmony, understanding and mutual respect (Dr. Freeman. 00). Each person brings a different cultural background into a company; there are obvious differences such as race, gender, professional status and disabilities. There are a lot of unseen differences that associates and managers must consider such as religion, sexual orientation, musical taste and individual styles.

The different personalities and life experiences that are brought into a company by people of diverse backgrounds reach far and wide. The company needs to embrace these differences and use them to develop a uniquely molded team. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses in their work ability and personalities. A manager that can pick out associates strengths and use them to benefit the rest of the workplace has taken a huge step in unifying their company. Using the diverse backgrounds of each associate properly will add tremendously to the problem solving area of a business. The different ideas and solutions that each persons brings to problem solving meeting, the better equipped the team will be to conquer tough opportunities with an array of different outlooks.

Buy custom The Value of a Diverse Workforce in Modern Times term paper

Each person also brings with them a special gift or talent. If we use an analogy that a business is like a human body, not everyone can be the head or the foot. Each individual part of a body working in unison focused on a single goal will accomplish a task. Without the wrist the fingers are useless, without the shoulder the arm, hand and fingers are useless. We can see it takes the combination of various specialty parts to make up a whole body (Apostle Paul. 67AD). A company has many different parts (people) that have different talents, when used properly they can be combined and focused toward one single goal.

Workforce diversity is dealt with through the doorway of our own unique personality styles (Dr. Freeman. 00). Training and understanding of the diversity issue is the most important step to developing a workforce that has no diversity barriers. Company guidelines and mandates will work to a degree, but companies that can train their associates to look inside themselves and gain a good understanding of their personal differences and cultural diversities will have a much easier time training them to accept others. Diversity consciousness cannot be simply mandated into a system, integrated into a corporate culture, or prompted by financial incentives. It is reflective of an attitude that organizations and their staffs must adopt that allows them to change their basic concepts about workers and converts "them" into "us" (Becker, Erviti, Shelley. 17). One of the keys to handling the issue of workforce diversity is also mutual respect for each individual which creates and attitude in the workplace that will eventually lead to a melting of personalities into one uniform culture.

In conclusion, it is quite obvious as we look around in America that the culture of the country is changing. Companies that dont take serious action and develop or expedite cultural diversity training will soon find themselves in a whirlpool of personalities and conflicts which may be too much to overcome. As is well known, the great case of Tournier v National Provincial and Union Bank of England held that a bank owes a duty of confidentiality to its customers. The duty extends at least to information concerning account transactions and extends beyond the date of the termination of the banker customer contract. Information attained from other sources, like a credit agency, is also covered by the duty. The duty is not absolute for the bank may disclose information where the disclosure is under compulsion by law, where there is a duty to the public to disclose, where the interests of the bank require disclosure and where the disclosure is made by the express or implied consent of the customer.

Tournier had an overdraft with the defendant bank. He had made arrangements to make payments toward the reduction of the overdraft, but after only three installments ceased to make further payments. Tournier was the payee of a cheque drawn by Woldingham Traders Ld. Rather than deposit the cheque in his account with the defendant bank; he indorsed the cheque to a customer of the London City and Midland Bank. The defendant bank came to know about the cheque by virtue of the fact that Woldingham was a customer. Upon seeing the cheque presented for payment the manager rang the appropriate branch of the London City and Midland Bank to enquire as to the identity of their customer. It was learned that the endorsee was a bookmaker, a person who accepts and pays off bets.

The manager then rang the employers of Tournier and had conversations with two of the directors. The actual contents of that conversation are not clear, but it was alleged that the manager informed them that Tournier was having dealings with a bookmaker. As a consequence of that communication the employer refused to renew Tourniers contract of employment. Tournier sued both in defamation and for breach of contract. He lost at first instance and appealed with respect to both heads primarily on the grounds that the judge had instructed the jury erroneously. He succeeded in the Court of Appeal with respect to both claims, the Court ordering a new trial and Tournier eventually won the case.

This case established 4 major exceptions.

Do my essay on Tournier v National Provincial & Union Bank of England (1924) CHEAP !

a) With the customers consent.

Traditionally, a bank would make a status enquiry about a customers credit standing with another bank. The customer would usually have no knowledge of this enquiry. Today, the bank must seek the customers permission to release such information. However, Tourniers case laid out that an implied consent is created to disclose information if the customer gives his bank as a reference.

b) Under compulsion of law.

There are various situations where a bank may be legally compelled to disclose information about a customers affairs. One of these is compulsion by court order. This could be used to assist in the investigation of a criminal offence under

- Bankers Books Evidence Act 187

- Police & Criminal Evidence Act 184.

- Drug Trafficking Offences Act 186.

The Police, however, must have a reasonable suspicion of crime and cannot use it to search for evidence.

Another situation where a bank must disclose information legally is upon receiving a valid request from an authorized official. This could be under the following acts

Taxes Management Act 170 - Information required by the Inland Revenue.

Companies Act 185 - Company information required by DTI.

Criminal Justice Act 187 - Set up the Serious Fraud Office to investigate fraud.

Financial Services Act 186 - To investigate insider dealing.

Sometimes the bank is under no direct compulsion to disclose information, but statutory protection is given. This situation arises when a crime may be committed if the information is not disclosed.

- Drug Trafficking Act 14.

- Criminal Justice Act 1.

It is a criminal offence to assist a money launderer to obtain, hide, keep or invest funds if you know or suspect that the funds are a result of a crime. It is also a criminal offence to fail to disclose to the police knowledge or suspicion of money laundering activities related to terrorist or drug related activities. It is an offence to disclose information to a customer or third party information on money laundering that has been passed to the police. Whilst suspicion is not defined, any employee who reports any suspicions according to the banks procedures will have complied with the regulations.

c) Where disclosure is in the banks interest.

This exception applies where the bank has to reveal details of a customers account in court when taking legal action. It was successfully used in the Sunderland v Barclays Bank case in 18. The case tells that Mrs. Sunderland issued a cheque and it was dishonored because of insufficient funds in her account. She called the bank and argued with them, but when her husband picked up the phone to discuss the matter with the bank, he was told about his wifes gambling. Sunderland sued the bank for disclosing that information, but the bank succeeded as it was in the banks interest and the account balance would also be disclosed to the public in court.

Another situation where this exception applies is disclosure to credit rating agencies when the customer has failed to make payments on a loan. However, the customer must be notified of this prior to the disclosure but he cannot halt the disclosure unless he makes the payments.

d) Where disclosure is in the public interest.

This hardly ever arises in practice, banks preferring to rely on the customers consent or on compulsion of law. It has been suggested that it may apply to trading with the enemy in time of war. In 186, then President Ronald Reagan ordered the freezing of Libyan assets held in the US right after the US obtained information about Libyan government accounts with Bankers Trust [Libyan Arab Foreign Bank v Bankers Trust (18)]. The court, however, never made clear if the disclosure in public interest exception applied in this case. • Roberts, Graham. Law Relating to Financial Services. War, as a rule, changes all aspects of society and beyond. Women, as an example, had very few rights or opportunities before WWI, but, during the war there was a shortage in the amount of people who were left behind to perform tasks such as working in factories. The cure for this became the placement of women in factory jobs, which raised the percentage of women who had employment up to 40%. Considering that women were not even considered people at this time this number is outstanding, and really gave women a hope of being considered an important part of society. It also provided a change in the standard family. After war, when the men return, there is a significant shift in the way things worked once again. Many men who left to fight in wars as productive, healthy men return to their homes as disfigured, sickly, or completely useless. Societies with men who are returning disfigured do have to adjust to their needs. An example is the men without faces. These men returned with horrible disfigurements which caused then to have issues with depression and self image. Advances in technology were made and prosthetics became available to people so that they could resume their lives, and gain better self perception. From war advances in technology were also made regarding weaponry. In WW1 the need for a drastic new weapon was established, and thus came the tank. It not only evolved from a self propelled gun, but changed drastically with new improvements in armament and teething throughout WW. In WW advances were made in many other weapons such as the monoplanes which by the end of the war had become jet planes. Because of the advances in weaponry the style that wars were fought in also changed from trench warfare to field because of the German realization that they could not efficiently fight and win a war if they simply fought it in trenches. Despite their best efforts, the German's did not manage to win either WW1 of WW. This caused a drastic change in the government. Before WW1 Germany had been a monarchy, and afterwards it evolved into a republic, and then a dictatorship once Hitler had been voted in, and then once again after WW the country became a Republic. The governmental systems changed because they were not efficient or because they had angered another country, however, without the wars the governments may have stayed the same, Germany may still be a monarchy, and Hitler may not have been a problem. The fact that Hitler was left in power for so long was a clear statement about the attitude that other countries had after WW1. Because war had been so glorified before WW1 people were more eager to go and fight in it, countries were more eager to have their war, even if the basis for it was just an assassination. After the countries realized the effects that war had on their country they were not as eager to partake in one again, even though they had a more justifiable reason. It is quite common to see peace protestors, such as the hippies, in times of war and it seems that with each passing war more and more people become opposed by the idea, and realize the lack of romanticism in that act. Destruction of this idea occurred as the lives of families and the infrastructure of cities was also being destroyed. Many changes took place in the architecture of cities because during the WW1 and WW many buildings were destroyed. Historical places such as the Residenz, which housed Kings in Munich, were nearly destroyed by enemy forces. This forces not only the rebuilding and restoring of many buildings, but also a complete change in the appearance of cities from those with many Victorian structures, to more modern buildings. War causes major changes to everything that it touches.

The Sixth Beatitude can be generalized into three particular teachings which each person must acquire in order to be affluent in his or her life, explicitly, love, respect and concern for others.

A person is likely to love others the same way as he loves himself. This Beatitude is teaching us to love endlessly not only ourselves but also others. It teaches us that in order to continue living in this society, we should learn and discern how to cooperate with one another. It is true that it is very difficult to just always get along or in other words, parating nakikisama (Filipino; always getting along). Though it is reasonable for a person to refuse or to stop loving in the end, we should understand that in this world, there can¡¯t be two people always accepting, there should always be one giving. Like in a family, all the members must be considerate. Take for instance a family whose padre de familia (Spanish; head of the family) works all day, waking early in the morning, sending his children to school and then going home late because he still waits for his children to finish studying in their tutor. And then when they reach home, the father just wanted his kid to make him a cup of tea, but the kid refuses. This example just show how inconsiderate the kid is, after all his father has done for him, which is very tiring, the father just wanted a very simple favor from him and he still has the nerve to rebuff.

As we all know, we are created in the image and likeness of God. Therefore, we are expected to respect not only ourselves but also others. This Beatitude instructs us that respect should not only apply to influential, wealthy and prominent people, but also to the deprived, because in the eye of God, we are all equal. We are brothers and sisters in Christ, and in a family, it is very important to have respect with each other. In order to earn the respect of other people, we should also learn how to respect them. At home, we already consider our maids as an extension of our family, though they still do not eat with us, we make sure that every Sunday, they are still able to attend mass. We are certain that they eat the right kind of food, sleep in a comfortable place, and receive the right amount of salary, for the reason that we deem that they are like us who wants to be treated as human beings.

Showing concern for a person makes the person feel that he is not alone. We constantly covet to have that kind of feeling because we know that whatever we do, we are accompanied and escorted. There is someone who supports us. A baby needs a mother¡¯s care while he is still young. A family¡¯s support is very important for a person especially when he needs to make a very big decision. We cannot say that a person doesn¡¯t need the concern of other people, because a person can¡¯t live alone, he needs a companion. That is why I agree that even a person is already old, he can still get married to have someone to live with when the time comes he needs someone to care for him.

Bipolar disorder is a brain instability which causes bizarre changes in a person's mood, energy, and ability to function. It is also called manic- depression. There are more than two million American adults have this disorder. These mood swings are unlike the normal ups and downs that people experience. Symptoms can be very critical and affect their entire life. This results in broken relationships, mediocre job or school performance, and suicide. Each case is very different. Some patients can come across symptoms in their early adolescence or later in life.

Manic-depression distorts a person's moods and thoughts. For example, they have racing thoughts one minute and the next they feel worthless and feel disconnected from the world. The different periods of highs and lows are called mania and depression.

Signs of a manic episode include increased energy, overly good mood, extreme irritability, racing thoughts, talking fast, jumping from one idea to another, can't concentrate well, and little sleep is needed. Also, they may have unrealistic beliefs in one's abilities and powers, poor judgment, spending sprees, a lasting period of behavior that is different from usual and increased sex drive. More signs to look for are aggressive behavior, denial that anything is wrong, and abuse of drugs or alcohol. A manic episode will be diagnosed if this elevated mood occurs with three or more of the other symptoms most of the day and nearly every day, for one week or longer.

Signs of a depressive episode include lasting sad or empty mood, feelings of hopelessness and guilt, loss of interest in activities they once loved, decreased energy, feeling of fatigue, and difficulty concentrating. Other symptoms consist of restlessness, irritability, sleeping too much or can't sleep, difficulty remembering or making decisions. Additional signs are change in appetite, unintended weight loss or gain, chronic pain that is not caused by physical injury, thoughts of death, and suicide attempts. A depressive episode will be diagnosed if five or more of these symptoms last most of the day and nearly every day, for a period of two weeks or longer.

There is also a mild to moderate level of mania called hypomania. Hypomania may feel good to the person who experiences it resulting in good functioning and enhanced productivity. One of the most important things to look out for is that the person will deny that anything is wrong. But without treatment, hypomania can become severe mania or can switch to depression.

In some people, symptoms of mania and depression may occur all together in what is called a mixed bipolar state. These symptoms comprise of agitation, trouble sleeping, significant change in appetite, psychosis, and suicidal thinking. That person may have a very sad, hopeless mood while at the same time feeling extremely energized. This is all very hard to imagine if you have never experienced any of this. But if you have experienced some of the symptoms, you have a better understanding of the pain a bipolar patient has to deal with. They are confused with what to think and do with all the thoughts this disorder causes them.

There are many factors scientists have discovered that cause bipolar disorder. It has a tendency to run in families, which means it can be genetic in some cases. In addition, this disorder does not occur because of a single gene. But more likely that many different genes put together and in combination with other factors of the person or their environment that cause bipolar disorder. Finding these specific genes is very complicated job. With the technology we have today, brain-imaging studies are helping scientists learn what goes wrong in the brain to produce bipolar disorder and other mental illnesses.

Bipolar disorder can be somewhat controlled with therapy and medications. This combination takes time to have its affect on the patient. Working closely with the doctor and communicating openly about the treatment concerns and options can make a great difference in its effectiveness.

Medications known as mood stabilizers are usually prescribed to help control manic-depression. In general, most continue treatment with mood stabilizers for long periods of time. Medications available are lithium, anticonvulsant medications, or a combination of both for a stronger effect.

The basic facts are here but there is so much more to know if you or someone close to you has been diagnosed with this disorder. There is no simple way to sum up this devastating chemical disorder.
