When he finally comes to his senses and talks to the nurse and Judy, Dexter quits being a caddie. Even though the job paid more than any other Dexter could possibly get during the summer, Dexter realized that his "Winter Dreams" of becoming a rich and respected man, like Judy's father, could not be achieved by serving the rich and respected. Dexter abandoned a great source of money and a stable position where everybody liked him, and his work, to find better opportunities with different rewards.
When Dexter becomes he prospers to a point when he joins the country club and finds himself among the people he wants to mimic. After he graduates, Dexter goes to and Ivy League university, passing up a college near home which his father could pay for, to get a degree in business from a place where rich people go for an education. Then he invested in a laundry and prospered to a chain of laundromats, clawing his way to a better life. He ends up in a country house where he in surrounded by rich and powerful men who have everything they want. He also meets Judy Jones, a beautiful young lady, at the country club and falls in love with her. And he thinks of her as an object that proves his dreams come true. She is a beautiful woman who is adored and wanted by every young man at the club, and when Dexter is with her he sees himself as the rich man whom he always wanted to be. He sees himself as a person whom everybody envies for having Judy, and the person every other man wants to be. Even though Judy drops him for another in a week, he still waits for another opportunity with her.
Dexter leaves his fiancee, Irene Scheerer, who loves him for a moment with Judy, whom he sees as his trophy of achievement, just like he quits a steady job as a caddie for other opportunities. His hunger for the best in life makes him sacrifice a sure thing with Irene, a shot at a normal life, and go for a one nighter with Judy who is a chance for a life as a man who is envied by others.
