In this failed love story of Romeo and Juliet, everything and anything possible seems to go tragically wrong for the two cursed lovers. In the quiet setting of Verona, families, the Montague and the Capulet's continue to feud. In the middle of the feuding and destruction the daughter of Lord Capulet and the son of Lord Montague fall deeply into love and secretly marry. Tybalt, Juliet's cousin insists on fighting Romeo for coming to Capulet's party, but Mercutio steps up to the challenge. Tragically, Mercutio is unintentionally killed by Tybalt whilst Romeo was trying to stop the fight. Romeo enraged the death of his best friend slays Tybalt and Romeo is banished. Meanwhile, Lord Capulet arranges a marriage with Paris for Juliet. Juliet seeks help from Friar Lawrence to get her out of this misery. He suggests she take a potion which makes her look dead for 4 hours, then which she should be laid in the Capulet tomb. Friar Lawrence would send a letter to the banished Romeo to come and get Juliet when she awakes from her short death. The letter does not get delivered to Romeo and he assumes she is truly lifeless. Romeo, thinking he cannot bear to live this world without his dear love Juliet, poisons himself next to Juliet. Juliet wakes up and sees Romeo dead beside her, she too, kills herself for the same reason Romeo died.

The older generation can be classified into two categories, the 'parents?and friends? Lord Capulet is the father of Juliet. He is an uncaring and cold character to Juliet, his wife and also towards the nurse. Directed to the nurse he says, "Peace, you mumbling fool! Utter your gravity o'er a gossip's bowl, For here we need it not.? His coldness is also shown when Juliet is reluctant to marry Paris, Lord Capulet threatens and insults her, but ever more so with Juliet's supposed death where he does not seem to be distraught or sad. He calmly suggests that they should use the goods bought for Juliet's wedding with Paris for Juliet's funeral instead. Lady Capulet, wife of Lord Capulet, is demonstrated as a weak character. She can be said to be uncaring as she does not know the proper age of her daughter. Her loyalties lie with Lord Capulet, however, she does protect Juliet when Lord Capulet is threatening and insulting Juliet, which can be seen as distant motherly love. Not the love Juliet got from nurse, Juliet's true mother. Nurse supported Juliet in everything she could and was like a mother to Juliet. However, she betrays Juliet at the most critical time. Advising Juliet to marry Paris because Romeo and banished, this lead to Juliet seeking help from the Friar. The Friar is a neutral character and wants peace between the two feuding families. He is the only priest in Verona therefore has a good relationship with both the Montague's and the Capulet's. Lord and Lady Montague do not have a big role in the story.

The root of all problems in this story is due to the on going feud between the two families. "Two households, both alike in dignity, In fair Verona where we lay our scene, From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,? The problem goes beyond the older generations in the story, but to older generations who started the feud. The older generations planted the hatred for each other into the children. If it wasn't for them there would not have been any tragic events, but also if it wasn't for them there would be no "Romeo and Juliet? Mercutio and Tybalt's death cannot be fully blamed on the older generation. Mercutio who was invited to the party at the Capulet's house took Romeo with him, who was not invited. Tybalt enraged that a Montague is at the party, challenges Romeo to a duel. He ends up killing Mercutio, his friend, and not Romeo. Ironically Romeo kills Tybalt, who was meant to kill Romeo. The older generation still has a fault in this as if they had a good relationship none of this would be a problem. The banishment of Romeo was Romeo's punishment for killing Tybalt. This was tragic in the sense that Romeo and Juliet, two lovers, had to part. If Romeo had the self control to stop himself killing Tybalt he wouldn't be banished. The letter explaining the directions for Romeo to get Juliet from the tomb was not delivered to Romeo because of Friar Lawrence's carelessness. He didn't do everything he could do to get such an important letter to Romeo. He sent an old Friar with a donkey to deliver the letter. "Who bare my letter then to Romeo??"I could not send it…" Romeo and Juliet's death was mainly due the Friar Lawrence's ideas and his carelessness. His intentions were good ?to bring peace to the two families by marrying the two children. But the direct causes were caused by Friar Lawrence. It was his idea to give Juliet the 'death?potion to make her look lifeless, and then get Romeo to get her when she awakes at the Capulet's tomb. He didn't ensure the simple task of getting the letter delivered to Romeo in time. Therefore, Romeo killing himself thinking she was dead. She woke and also ended her life, seeing Romeo dead. Lord Capulet also had a role in his daughters death as he arranged the marriage with Paris, giving Juliet no choice but to ask Friar Lawrence for assistance. Some people may also blame Friar Lawrence for marrying Romeo and Juliet but in those days it was common to get married at a young age.

The death of Tybalt and Mercutio had shared responsibility between the older generation and the younger generation, such as Mercutio, Romeo and Tybalt. Romeo and Juliet's death was solely the responsibility of the older generation, if they left Romeo and Juliet alone, they would have lived a happy life.
