Dr. Faustus

In some cases pride and desire for more power and knowledge can be a good thing. for example, going to college is a way to gain more knowledge, be mpore successful in life, and allows the college student to have pride in his or her accomplishments. In the book, Dr. Faustus, written by Christopher Marlowe, this is not the case. Faustus is guilty of many sins, pride being the greatest, but perhaps it is his desire for knowledge bwyond the scope of man that causes God to damn him. It is simply Faustus audacity in daring to question his place in the universe, which which turns God against him.

Faustus has a great desire for knowlegde and power. He rejects medicine and the study of theology because he does not want any limits. It is very ironic that Faustussigns his soul over to the devil in order to have no limits, because by signing Lucifers document he is limiting his freedom. When he signs the document,he has a set limit of twenty-four years until he has to go to hell. Faustus does not want to use his power to do good or to make a difference. At one point in the book, Faustus asks Mephistophilis to make him invisible. Faustus is granted his wish and becomes invisible. He then goes to the pope and torments him. Faustus is also very ambitious and knows what he wants. At one point he asked Mephistophilis to make him the great emperor of the world.

Along with power and knowledge, Faustus is also full of pride. There are many times throughout the book when he questions his choice in turning away from God, but his pride always turns him back to the devil. He starts to feel guilty, but then cannot bring himself to believe in one force of nature higher than himself. In one case, Faustus rejects salvation in order to embrace Helen of Troy. When Faustus begins to doubt giving his soul to the devil, he juist thinks about the wealth he can gain. For example, when he cut his arm to sign his name in blood and give his soul to the devil, the blood started to clot and he began to think of it as a sign. But as soon as he thought about all of the wealth and power he had to gain he quickly signed himself over.

Although Faustus was gulity of many sins, pride being the greatest, God constantly gave him chances to save his sould and seek forgiveness. God sent an angel down to try and show Faustus the way, but he paid little attention. At any point Faustus could have asked for forgivness, but his pride and power hungry ambitions got in the way. Faustus questioned his way in the universe, which in the ends turns God against him. He questions Gods power and greatness and thinks of himself as no less than good.

Besides putting trust in the devil, Faustus also tried to learn the secrets of black magic. This is another example of when he has the audacity to question his place in the universe. He thinks he has the ability to perform this magic and thinks of himself as more almighty than God. Faustus even tries to conjure the spirit of Alexander the Great.

Jesus said to let the person who has never sinned to cast the first stone. Everybody sins ans everybody has the chance to be forgiven. by these characteristics, Faustus would be looked at as normal, but not everybody yearns to learn the secrets of blsck majic and gives their souls to the devil. Faustus was guilty of many sins, pride being the greatest, but perhaps it was his desire for knowledge and power beyond the scope of man that causes God to damn him. It is simply Faustus audacity in daring to question his place in the universe, which turns God against him.
