"The Guest"

Albert Camus' story "The Guest" deals with theme of trust. With the idea of trust, Daru, the schoolmaster, was right to give the Arab a choice between escaping and turning himself into the police. Daru was right to give the Arab a choice because he did not want to get involved, it was not his responsibility, and he did not know the facts of the Arab's crime.

One of the reasons Daru was right to give the Arab a choice was because he did not want to get involved in taking the Arab to prison. Daru did not want to have a bad conscience, feeling guilty that he was part of ruining someone's right of liberty to life. There was a war going on, and Daru was forced to take the Arab to the other town because the were short on policemen. Daru strongly disagreed with this war, and the over all concept of war. Daru was a man of Brotherhood who believed, "men who share the same rooms, soldiers or prisoners, develop a strange alliance." Taking the Arab to prison would make him part of the war and go against his brotherhood.

Another reason, why Daru was right to give the Arab a choice was the Arab was not his responsibility. Daru was a schoolteacher. His duties were to give the students of the plateau an education, and teach them life long values. It wasn't his job to transport prisoners from one town to another. Was it his fault that the town of El Ameur was short on policemen, and had to count on a schoolmaster, who belonged in a classroom, to take the prisoner to Tinguit? Education and law have nothing to do with each other.

The Final reason why Daru was right to give the Arab a choice was because he did not know the actual facts of the Arab's crime. He learned of the crime from Balducci who told him, "one owed the other grain, and he killed his cousin with a billhook." The Arab later told Daru why he killed his cousin, "He ran away. I ran after him" Daru knew they were transferring the prisoner to Tinguit because. "The village was beginning to stir; they wanted to take him back." Maybe the village people felt that the Arab was innocent, and were going to fight for him. Daru did know the Arab was a man of integrity. The Arab had a chance to escape during the night, and chose not too. Any real murderer would have found any way possible to escape.

Daru was right to give the Arab a choice. First he did not want to be involved. Daru was a Brotherhood man, and did not want to do anything with the war or interfere with another person's right to liberty. The Arab was not Daru's responsibility. Daru was a schoolteacher and had nothing to do with the Arab or the policemen. Finally, Daru was right to give the Arab a choice because he did not know the actual facts to know that the Arab was guilty.
