The movie takes place in 157, in the town of Coalwood, Virginia, and the Soviet satellite, Sputnik was just launched. After he saw it cross the sky above his home the 14-year old Homer suddenly fell in love with the idea of space travel. Sadly his father, John Hickam is the local coal mine's boss, and he expects his son to follow in his footsteps because everyone who lives in this town usually succeeds at football or mining.

Homer starts building model rockets as a hobby, even against his father's requests. Unfortunately, his first several rockets are an embarrassment. His first model rocket blows up his mother's white picket fence. His next rockets blow up by simply exploding on the launch pad. Others make it a few feet in the air right before blowing up.

Buy cheap October Sky term paper

Homer and his friends felt a sense of losing hope but their interests to rocket science never diminished. Miss Frieda Riley, his science teacher, supported and encouraged Homer and his friends to continue on their course. The school science fair comes around and Miss Frieda Riley encourages them to enter. Homer goes through many obstacles at the county science fair and then winning to continue on to the national science fair.

Finally, Homer and his friends manage to construct a working rocket. It blasts off in the air and is found several miles away after it lands. Homer and the boys are overjoyed, as is Miss Riley. Word gets around and soon the whole town is spellbound with the notion of rockets and everyone shows up at Cape Coalwood field to see the launches. The whole town is watching, but the one person Homer expected to see never showed up, his father.

We believe that this movie, October Sky, deserves to receive a "GOOD PHYSICS" review. Although this movie didn't involve too many scenes involving physics, the few scenes that contained physics were splendid. The first example is in the scene where Homer and Quentin are in the science lab conducting experiments, trying to figure out the propellant for their rocket. For their rockets they were able to observe that potassium chloride mixed with sugar and heat produces lots of good expanding gases which make a good propellant. They discuss with understanding terms of physics, which actually relate to the physics of their rocket. Though the audience may not have understood what was going on, intellectual physics students could comprehend the different formulas and observations of their rocket.

Our next example deals with the general concept of physics being discussed instead of observed. The scene is set as Homer proves to Mr. Turner that his rocket he had recently launched did not start the fire. He uses the equation of s= ½a(t ²) where s is the altitude, a is acceleration from gravity, and t is time. Even though the equations and calculations confuse Mr. Turner, he was able to prove that his rocket flew for about 14 seconds and at an acceleration of ft/s², that means the altitude was about 000 feet, exactly what Homer said it was. Therefore he concluded that his rocket only had a range of 1. miles so they couldnt have started the fire in the forest miles away.

The last explanation of physics in the movie involves the description of how the DeLaval Nozzel (pictured below) work within the rocket engine. The key to the DeLaval nozzle is as the nozzle narrows, the gas speeds up. By carefully constructing the nozzle, the gas could be made to go at supersonic speeds just as it reaches the nozzle throat. Now traveling faster than the speed of sound, the gas would move into the divergent section of the nozzle. Because the gas was supersonic, its speed would increase again as the nozzle diverged. Newton's third law shows why this creates thrust, the burning and expanding of the gas directs itself out the nozzle at high speeds which pushes the rocket through the air because for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

With the plot of the movie "October Sky" revolving around rocket science, they had an expectation to meet the standard physics of rockets. If the movie had a few more scenes dealing with physics, we may have been able to find a couple flaws, but the overall contributions to physics in the movie proved to be worthwhile. We, therefore declare the movie "October Sky" deserves a Good Physics rating.

Movie Times

[Example 1] 080 is when Homer and Quentin talk about the propellant

[Example ] 11500 is when homer proves he didnt start the fire

[Example ] 110 is when homer actually explains about the nozzle

Please note that this sample paper on October Sky is for your review only. Iron, protein and calcium support the growth of muscle tissues and other body tissues (West, 000 18). Breast milk is viewed as the ideal food for infants. The contain nutrients too meet the specific needs of an infant. Cereal is also important because it is one of the first solid foods that infants eat. The cereal provides iron that the infant can easily digest (West, 00015). New foods should be introduced to infants and toddlers as soon as possible, developing their pallets before the age of two.

During childhood, children will start to eat larger quantities of food. Giving children the motivation to eat is the most important thing. They need to be fed foods that are easy to digest, and include the four food groups. Children must be fed child sized portions because they know their own limits. Include shapes, colours, textures, and flavors to encourage children to look forward to meal times. Children start to become more active during this period of life and need more energy. Boys and girls aged -8 need about 1,700 calories per day (West, 00000). Over this period of time, many individuals have had an impact on the history of Canada and have helped to shape Canada into the great nation it now is. However, four individuals proved to be more influential than the rest. These four individuals, who were most significant to Canadian history, were Sit John A. MacDonald, General Sam Hughes, William Lyon Mackenzie King, and Adolph Hitler. These men proved to be highly consequential in the history of this nation because they all, in their own way, either helped Canada get out of problems it was facing, set the nation off on a new and better track, and finally helped to prove Canada's independence.

Not one person could doubt Sir John A. MacDonald, the first Prime Minister of Canada and a father of Confederation, to be one of the most significant people in Canadian History. As a father of Confederation, he helped form Canada into a nation. Had he not done this, Canada would have been taken over by the United States of America. Being the first Prime Minister of Canada, he was a founding father of Canada who basically started the Canadian economy and culture . MacDonald also helped to prove Canada's independence by joining the former British colonies into a strong union and governing this union as its own nation, while trying to free it from British or American influence.

General Sam Hughes, though not the most loved Canadian, was the most significant individual in history during the World War I era. Hughes was responsible for the birth of Val Cartier Camp , the largest training camp in Canada, where soldiers were prepared for the battlefields. Though many say he was too tough on the soldiers, and his unpopular decisions, such as the choice to use the Ross rifle, led to his eventual downfall , no one can deny that this former Minister led the Canadian army to victory. As a result of the training received at Val Cartier camp, Canadian soldiers captured Vimy Ridge, which was a most significant moment in Canadian history as it won Canada an invitation to the Paris Peace Conference. At the Paris Peace Conference, the Canadian delegates helped form the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, which was important as it meant Canada was to be recognized as its own nation, rather than simply a piece of the British Empire. This chain of events, which will forever leave a mark in Canadian History, all occurred as a result of the actions of General Sam Hughes.

As a Prime Minister of Canada, William Lyon Mackenzie King was very significant in Canadian history, far more than any other individual during the "roaring" twenties and the "dirty" thirties. This follower of the Occult helped Canada proved it's independence by refusing to send troops to Turkey during the Chanak affair, which helped prove Canada's independence as it demonstrated that Canada would no longer follow orders from Britain. He also took a leading role at the Imperial Conference of 16, where the Balfour Declaration was signed. This document states that British dominions were to be autonomous and equal in status . King also signed the Halibut Treaty with the United States without a co-signature from the British Ambassador in the United States. This demonstrated Canada's independence as it proved that Canada no longer felt that Canadian foreign affairs needed British approval.Cheap custom writing service can write essays on The Four Most Significant individuals in Canadian History

The fourth most significant person in Canadian history, though not a Canadian, was Adolph Hitler. As a leader of the National Socialist German Workers' Party, and the leader of Nazi Germany, he started World War II , which was what got Canada out of the terrible depression. His Final Solution, which was his plan for the extermination of the Jews, caused the people of Canada to realize their racist ways and change them. Without this realization, Canada might not be the unprejudiced and multicultural nation it now is. It was also Hitler's war that caused Canada's involvement in D-Day, which helped prove Canada's ability to fight in a major battle and win.

Sir John A. These four individuals helped Canada by the great nation it now is, and one could hope that every man, woman, and child can not only appreciate the freedom and the lifestyle we enjoy as a result of the actions of these men, but also to follow in their footsteps.

Please note that this sample paper on The Four Most Significant individuals in Canadian History is for your review only. Shakespeare's comedy takes place in 16th century Europe, and shows faltering men amidst a woman disguised as a man, Portia. The irony is that Portia, like all women at the time, were viewed as inferior to men and could not take place in mainstream business, yet alone save a man's life, Antonio, in a heated courtroom battle. Dressed as a man in a courtroom battle, she is the key to victory for Antonio and friends. She decisively and cleverly realizes that the bond in question requires one pound of flesh as payment if the bond is not paid in full on time. But with flesh comes blood, and blood in the laws of Venice counts as murder, and therefore the bond is nullified in court. But through her aggressive tactics and strong will she reverses the punishment inflicted upon Antonio over to Shylock, which must pay a hefty sum of wealth because of this illegal bond. The court grants her request, more likely because Shylock is a Jew rather than serving due justice, but this is a prime example of Portia's cutthroat way of dealing with problems that unfold before her. Surrounded by stumbling men, Portia stands out as the heroine by making things right for everybody including herself, which makes her the hero and heroine of the play.

Bassanio's friend, Antionio, is in a heap of trouble for not paying back the loan in due time. Portia uses her smarts and cunning attitude to help save him. Dressed as a male lawyer's clerk, the heroine is on the defensive for Antonio. Portia says, "The quality of mercy is not strained. It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven," (Act 4.i.10-11). Stressing mercy and other dominant Christian morals in which she and everybody else in the courtroom, Portia effectively isolates Shylock as the only Jew. She wins the Duke of Venice's bias as well, as he says to Shylock, "We all expect a gentle answer, Jew," (4.i., 5). Lawfully he has no power to rule in the Christian's favor because it would show Venice as a city with a corrupt justice system. Antonio says, "The duke cannot deny the course of law / Since that the trade and profit of the city," meaning that Antonio is sure his fate is near (III.iii.6, 1).

Shylock is on the verge of having his bond. He stresses the law, saying "I shall have my bond. Speak not against my bond," (III.iii.4). And, for a time, his strategy works perfectly. Being offered ten times over the original sum the bond calls for and with Bassanio offering his own life in exchange for Antonio's, Shylock still refuses, replying coldly, "I am not bound to please thee with my answers" as to show that Shylock doesn't need to change the bond to make the defendants happy(IV.i.64).

Seeing that the forgiveness defense is running out of steam, the heroine goes straight for the kill. Realizing that the bond requires one pound of flesh and Shylock is an alien, she figures out that it is impossible to extract flesh from a person without blood coming with it. Saying, "But in cutting it, if thou dost shed / One drop of Christian blood…," Portia effectively presents the difference between Shylock the Jew, and Antonio the Christian (4.i.-). In this cunning legal maneuver, drawing blood from a Venetian citizen is unlawful from an alien, Shylock as non-Christians are lawfully considered aliens . Antonio's life is saved and Shylock sulking in defeat has more coming for him. As he has attempted to murder, by the laws of Venice, his estate is to be removed. Portia adds insult by requesting that Shylock be imprisoned or killed. The Duke reduces the sentencing to becoming convert to Christianity and to give a sizeable portion of his estate to his daughter, who betrayed him.Order Custom Essay on The Lone Heroine

Though she appears to be a simple woman, she is much more through these heroic actions. Effectively saving Antonio through a cunning yet simple legal maneuver, Portia stands out in front of stumbling men around her who could not have come up with a better plan. In fact, Antonio was prepared to die, saying "The duke cannot deny the course of law," (III.iii.6). Through saving Antonio's life and setting things straight for all Christians, Portia would be viewed as a total hero, as Christian supremacy was of general acceptance at the time. Though very hypocritical, stressing forgiveness yet viciously attacking Shylock at the first chance suggesting that he be killed, Portia's cunning and aggressiveness cannot be denied. Overcoming her status of a woman as well as out-doing a whole group of men make Portia the perfect hero and heroine of both the 16th century Europe and today.

Please note that this sample paper on The Lone Heroine is for your review only. Born into a low class family in Clarksburg, Virginia on January 1,184, Jackson was a child of five. His parents were Jonathan Jackson (170-186) and Julia Beckwith (178-181). Nine months after Julia became pregnant with their sixth child her husband and first-born daughter, Elizabeth died of Typhoid Fever. Julia gave birth to their sixth child, Laura Ann, the next day.

Jackson's mother remarried to a man named Charles Woodson. Woodson disliked his stepchildren and all of the family's financial difficulties. The family did not have the money to put food on the table every night or to be fully clothed all of the time. The two newly weds divorced and the Jackson family moved to Jackson's Mill, Virginia into a cheaper house. During their stay at Jackson's Mill, Julia died in labor. For losing her life Jackson's half brother, Wirt Woodson was born. Jackson, being the oldest male in the house hold now had to work at night while attending a low class school during the day. Jackson had to support his brothers and sisters. When his siblings got older he could concentrate more on himself.

When Jackson turned eighteen he was accepted into the United States Military Academy at West Point. While at West Point he studied a lot of philosophy. He also had a strong interest in math but was not very good at it and gave it up after his first year at West Point. He graduated in 1846 and received the rank of second lieutenant. At the beginning of the Mexican war he was ordered to report for duty with the First Regular Artillery. Jackson, living in Virginia was not hesitant to take a trip down to Mexico. For about a week up to when e served with this unit in General Winfield Scott's army in its campaign from Vera Cruz to Mexico City Jackson did nothing but enjoy the sun light and get a tan. After the Vera Cruz Campaign Jackson participated in the storming of Chapultepec, and for his daring there was promoted to major. In the spring of 1851 Jackson was offered to teach at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. After thinking over his options for a year Jackson's passion for edjucation over powered his will to fight. He resigned from the military. At the Virginia Military Institute he taught natural and experimental philosophy, what he had been so interested in only a few years earlier. Jackson was a marvelous teacher and taught some of the brightest minds America ever saw.

Order College Papers on Stone wall jackson

Now that Jackson had a more secure job he began to settle down and start a family. The lucky girl was Elinor Junkin (185-1854). On August 4, 185 the two were married. However, Elinor died in labor on October , 1854, their son was stillborn. On July 16, 1857, Jackson married for the second time. His wife was Marry Anna Morrison (181-115). Mary Anna gave birth to a daughter, Mary Graham, on April 0, 1858; the baby died less than a month later, on May 5. Jackson, frustrated with dead babies and a dead wife returned to the military. However, Jackson was unwilling to his first assignment. But in November 185, Jackson was one of the VMI officers who stood guard at the execution of abolitionist John Brown. Jackson was working his was up the ranks again. On April 1, 1861 Jackson was appointed in charge of the VMI Corps of Cadets who were ordered to Richmond to serve as drillmasters for new military recruits. 0n April 7, 1861 Governor John Letcher ordered Jackson to take command at Harpers Ferry, where he organized the troops that would soon comprise the famous Stonewall Brigade.

In July of that same year Jackson earned his legendary nickname along with the ranking of Brigadier General. "Look, there stands Jackson like a stone wall". The next month Stone Wall Jackson was promoted to Major General. He was now in command of the Shenandoah Valley. In May and June of 186 Jackson was brilliant for a streak of 4 battles. This was later named the Shenandoah Valley Campaign. It consisted of victories at Front Royal, Winchester, Cross Keys and Port Republic. Following the successful campaign, Stone Wall Jackson was sent to join one of the greatest generals of all time, General Robert E. Lee. However, he was sent back to the Shenandoah Valley because of ineffective leadership, which stood in stark contrast to the brilliance of the Shenandoah Valley Campaign. To this day people do not understand what went wrong. Jackson was promoted to Lt. General and given command of the new Second Corps, Jackson was now in charge of half of Lees Army of Northern Virginia.

Some believe that maybe Lee was fearing his power diminishing, maybe he was a little jealous of Jackson, however, Jackson was stuck by three .57 caliber bullets. He was taken to a field hospital where his left arm was amputated. He later died at 15 of serious blood loss. His last words were Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees. The burial of the gallant war hero took place in Lexington, Virginia, the town that was Jacksons home during his years as Professor at Virginia Military Institute.

Please note that this sample paper on Stone wall jackson is for your review only. Melville was not the only writer of the time who found the sea a rich source of metaphor. His contemporary, Flaubert, said in 1846 that ¡°the three finest things in creation are the sea, Hamlet, and Mozart¡¯s Don Giovanni.¡± (Marcus Cuncliff, 175 10) Herman Melville just wrote several sea novels out of his own very experiences at sea. For Moby Dick he chose a South Sea voyage in a whaler. In so doing, and in sticking to the ship instead of roaming off among real or imagined islands, he provided himself with a firm social and occupational framework. Thus anchored to actuality, he could let his imagination run free. The novel has tremendous power. It moves grandly through alternations of excitement and ease to the almost intolerable tension of the three-day chase of the White whale, and the eventual, inevitable disaster when the whale kills Ahab, then smashes the Pequod. (Marcus, 107) Like so many American classics, Moby Dick, Or the whale is at once a natural outgrowth of its writer¡¯s themes and materials and a quantum leap in achievement. As Ishmael¡¯s story, the book is a narrative of education that follows its hero from his opening hypos through its conversion to brotherhood by the pagan Queequeg to his encounters with the sea, the whale, and the white whale, linked images of Creation and the powers that govern it. (Emory Elliott et al, 188 44)

When Moby Dick was first published in 1851 its critical reception ranged from indifference to hostility. Hawthorne, to whom Moby Dick is actually dedicated, was amongst the very early readers to discern its importance. Today Moby Dick is widely regarded as the summit not only of Melville¡¯s art but of American nineteenth-century fiction. (Ousby, 7)

But in the early 1880s, Moby Dick began receiving attention from a few English readers, mainly sea authors and social critics. By and large, the scant attention Moby Dick received during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century came from England, but there were a few Melville enthusiasts this side of the Atlantic. In 10, an American literary historian commented, ¡°an occasional admirer can still be found who will pronounce them [Melville¡¯s] superior to Cooper¡¯s.¡± (Kevin J. Hayes, 14 xix) The early twentieth-century Moby Dick revival began in England, but in 11, the centenary of Melville¡¯s birth, Americans, too, rediscovered Melville. Since the revival, Moby Dick has been the subject of three movies, the silent Sea Beast (15) with John Barrymore as Ahab; the talkie Moby Dick (10) with Barrymore recreating his role; and Moby Dick (156), directed by John Huston with a screenplay by Bay Bradbury. The work of the first half of the twentieth century culminated with Jay Leyda¡¯s Melville Log (151), a work which has set the standard for subsequent documentary histories of major American authors, and Leon Howard¡¯s Herman Melville A Biography (151). Moby Dick has attracted some of the brightest literary scholars of recent times and has been the subject of numerous critical articles and monographs. The most important recent efforts have been the biographical, bibliographical, and textual work of Hershel Parker, Harrison Hayford, and G. Thomas Tanselle. (Hayes, xx-xxiii) Discovered ¨C or rediscovered ¨C in the early decades of the twentieth century, Melville now more than ever seems the monumental writer of nineteenth-century America whose presence on the literary and cultural landscape is all but inescapable. (Robert S. Levine, 001 )

There are also some scholars investigated particularly the style of Moby Dick. In Herman Melville A Critical Study, Richard Chase holds that the style of Moby Dick is a rhythm of three basic styles the style of fact, the style of oratorical celebration of fact, the style of meditation moving toward mysticism. (Richard Chase, 14 86-4) In the same chapter, Richard Chase also indicates that in discussing Melville¡¯s style, writers like Matthiessen, Sedgwick, and Olson have pointed out several influences chiefly, Shakespeare, sir Thomas Browns, and the Bible. (Chase, 86)

Do my essay on Defamiliarization in Moby-Dick CHEAP !

In this thesis, the theories of foregrounding and defamiliarization will be adopted to analyze the stylistic traits in Moby dick and to illustrate the literariness of Moby Dick. Literariness is a matter, as Roman Jakobson put it, ¡°that which makes a given work a literary work.¡±

Please note that this sample paper on Defamiliarization in Moby-Dick is for your review only. Struggling to support his wife and children in a land colonized and dominated by Europeans, this man observes the corruption of the people trying to do the same. Native Ghanaians are being crushed by poverty and it is clear that most anybody would do anything in pursuit of wealth and power. Thru the man's experiences, we learn of Ghana's recurring cycle of corruption and its doom. The encounter he makes in his everyday life reveals the hopelessness and cynicism of Ghanaians. Honesty is not valued in this poverty stricken land, and it is obvious when even his loved ones hate him for it. However, false hopes are quickly killed and even the dreams of his hopeful family are thrown in the dirt. As a result, even the powerful are overthrown and a new group of wealthy, powerful leaders take their place.

So contaminated the Ghanaians have become, the man is not applauded for his honesty, but instead receives scorn. Such a simple act of not accepting a bribe from the timber merchant causes his much pain. Amankwa accuses him, saying, "you are a very wicked man. You will never prosper"(107). At home, his wife is enraged that he did not take the money retorting, "maybe you like this crawling that we do, but I am tired of it" (44). Likewise, the man's mother-in-law is also constantly shooting contempt towards the man for his "uselessness." She is convinced that because of him her life and her daughter's life is miserable. She deeply envies the life that Minister Koomson's life finding it "truly unbearable when you see some twin of yours shoot like a star toward the gleam, so fast that he has light of his own to give"(6). Unlike the women in his family, the man understands that "all anyone [in Ghana] struggles for is to be nearer the white man"(). He himself does not understand how men are so consumed with the thought of rising to the top but in his duty to his wife and children, he takes the mindless struggle of working day after day. Although he hopes for a better life for his family he sees no hope to a different life and asks, "how can I ever feel like a human being"().

Koomson's success and rise to become minister is the very opposite of the man's honest ways and a clear example of corruption in Ghana. The minister had been a classmate of the man and he recalled that he was not a special student at all but "actually stupid"(5). The Man sees Joseph Koomson and how he was ready "for big and beautiful things" but also saw "[his] own black men hugging new paunches scrambling to ask the white man to welcome them onto [their] backs"(81). Seeing men striving to imitate the white man, he stays away from doing the same. When Koomson offers his wife and mother-in-law a boat, the man understands that Koomson is out to fool them. Still he allows his wife to get excited and prepare a big dinner because he wants to avoid any further scorn from his family for they "are using it to hit [him] on the head every terrible day, to make[him] feel so useless"(57). As he predicted the boat was just a money scheme for Koomson himself and leaves his wife and mother-in-law disappointed.

When the state is overthrown in a coup, Koomson who represents the contaminated black man, must flee for his life as the new leaders take over. Even the man's wife, who has finally given in to the falsity of Koomson's promises realizes that this pursuit of a "better life" is not worth it. Seeing the minister's pathetic, desperate attempts to save his life. "…here was a real change. The individual man of power now shivering, his head filled with the fear of the vengeance of those he had wronged"(16). She says "I am glad you never became like him" and for the first time "she was glad to have [her husband] the way he was"(165). Stripped of his pride, Koomson must resort the plunging head first into the latrine to save his own life. The man knows that this new government are to become just like the leaders the preceded them. "New people, new style, old dance" he describes it(157). He knows that "now another group of bellies will be bursting with the country's riches"(158).

Order College Papers on Cynicism and Corruption - The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born

Armah clearly describes the corruption is Ghana the last years of Nkrumah. Though the protagonist is a man of honesty, he shows us the cynicism and corrupted pursuit for power. Even his own family has grown to hate him in their lives of poverty and is willing to do anything to get out of it. Through Koomson, Armah also depicts the ongoing cycle in which leaders are again and again contaminated by the desire of power and wealth. The conditions of his land has made him so cynical that he believes that salvation exists "…only within the cycle of damnation itself"(56).

Please note that this sample paper on Cynicism and Corruption - The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born is for your review only. At first, I didn't really know where to begin, or how I was going to fill up two pages on my mom's health history and the history of some of the women in my family. However, about two minutes into the interview, I was thoroughly surprised. Although, I already knew most of the surface details, it turns out there was quite a bit more than I'd realized.

On my mother's side of the family, there have been a few breast cancer diagnoses; one of her sister's has suffered from severe depression and anorexia, as well as a disease called Wilson's disease. My mom also has this disease, which I will discuss further on.

I was born when my mother was all of 18 years old. When I asked her about birth control in those days, she told me that of course it was around via condoms and the pill, but regretfully, she didn't use either. Being pregnant at such a young age, was for her one of the worst things ever, both emotionally and physically. She told me that although she doesn't regret me for one minute, at 18 years old, she was still growing. She wasn't thinking like a mother. Her bodyy was growing one way and stretching another way. In the long run, she received a gift, but to get it her whole way of life and her destiny were changed.

Order Custom Essay on community experience

Even though she was young, she was relatively healthy throughout the pregnancy. She even smoked and drank moderately up to the 4th month, which thankfully didn't have any severe side effects. She said that at that time, the risks of such behavior weren't really known. Fortunately, I was born a healthy baby, although I do have a stigmatism and have to wear glasses, which could be a result of some of those behaviors.

5 years later, my sister came along. My mom was a little older and a lot wiser. The pregnancy went relatively well until an infection developed in my mom called Streptococci. Although, it didn't affect my sister long-term, it did cause her to be born prematurely one month early.

My mother didn't smoke or drink at all while pregnant with my sister. But, she did before and afterwards. She started smoking when she was 15. When she was 8, she began to have serious shortness of breath. When she went in to be checked, her doctor discovered on her lower left lobe of her left lung, was the very beginnings of Fibrosis. She quit cold-turkey that day.

As I mentioned earlier, my mom also has a rare disease known as Wilson's. One of her sisters also has it and another one of her sister's is a carrier.

A women's copper count is supposed to be 50. When you have Wilson's disease, there is too much copper in your blood, and your system doesn't know how to get rid of it. For example, if you eat foods that are high in copper such as chocolate, almonds or mushrooms, and you have Wilson's, your body can't break it down properly. Copper is a metal and it builds up. Your body has no place to store it so it goes to either your liver or your brain.

My mom's father and mother are known as carriers of the disease. Somewhere along the line, way back when, on both sides of her father and mother, a cousin slept with a cousin (back when this was accepted) and it was a 1 in 1000 chance that my grandparents would meet each other, get married and have kids. Well, they did and had kids in fact, but as I said before the disease only developed in my mom, one of her sisters and made another one of her sister's a carrier.

My aunt was discovered with the disease first and this was because when Wilson's is in some of its advanced stages, signs of it become more obvious. One of these is a copper colored ring around the pupil of the eye, which my aunt had. Doctors then recommended that all of my grandparent's children get tested. The test was a liver biopsy, and my mom, queasy over needles refused to do it.

Certain things trigger Wilson's such as stress and smoking to name a few. At the time, my mother was still smoking, and she was under high levels of stress, because my dad was basically an alcoholic and gone all the time.

She told me that about years after she had refused to take the test, she was blow drying my sister's hair and all of sudden she thought, "I can't do this, something's wrong." She said that the thought of finishing to dry my sister's long hair seemed absolutely overwhelming. The consumption of animal products is relatively low as compared to Western countries. Recent scientific findings demonstrated that diets high in plant foods are associated with more health benefits, such as decreased risks of cardiovascular diseases, hypertension and obesity, and cancers of several sites. As per capita income increases with industrial development in Asia, there is a tendency to increase the consumption of added sugar, fats, oils and animal products and decreased consumption of cereal products, particularly in higher income regions. Consumers need to be cautioned about the trend in such dietary changes that may lead to adverse health effects. Contemporary dietary recommendations urge the consumption of a variety of cereals or grains, the proper storage of cereals including corns to avoid fungal contamination, and all year-round supply and consumption of vegetables and fruits. Soybeans, lentils, peas and other types of beans are important legumes in Asia; some soyfoods are tofu, soymilk, dahl and tempeh. Regular intake of soyfoods probably reduced the risk of several types of cancers and lowered the blood serum cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein and triglyceride levels. Soy isoflavones may have a function in the prevention of hormone-related cancers. Salty and salted/cured meat, fish, and vegetables are common ingredients in Southeast Asia and they might have contributed to the high stomach cancer rate. Diets high in Cantonese-style salted fish, prepared by softening under partial decomposition, could be associated with increased risk of nasopharyngeal cancer. The use of MSG may cause adverse symptoms to some individuals. Another compound of health concern is the -Monochloropropane-1, -Diol (-MCPD), which has been found in some soy sauce products containing acid-hydrolyzed vegetable proteins. Appropriate quality control is needed to ensure the compliance of safe levels of contaminants.

Indian diets tend to contain more vegetables, less meat and fewer additives and packaged and processed foods than the traditional British diet, said Dr. Britton, of the Division of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Nottingham in England. The findings were similar for children eating vegetarian and non-vegetarian diets.

Indian children who ate the most Indian food were least likely to have abnormally sensitive airways, a sign of asthma. The study also found that the more Indian food they ate, the lower their risk of allergy. The results were similar even after the researchers took into account other asthma triggers such as living with dogs and cats or parental smoking. Since only one white child ate an Indian diet, the researchers could not adequately determine the effects of an Indian diet on non-Indian children.

Help with essay on Different culture diets

Typical Australian eating habits do not provide adequate carbohydrate, and the focus of a winning diet is to increase our intake of these fuel foods. How much do you need? For general health benefits and to provide energy for a light to moderate training program, nutritionists recommend that carbohydrate foods should make up more than half our total energy intake. Athletes in heavy daily training may need to eat higher levels again or to achieve special carbohydrate intake targets. For maximum daily glycogen storage an intake of 7-10g of carbohydrate per kg of your body weight is needed. This means an intake of 400-700g of carbohydrate for a typical endurance athlete.

For most Australians, a high-fat diet is second nature. Although our body needs some fats and oils, our typical eating patterns well exceed these requirements. The health disadvantages of high-fat eating include an increased risk of becoming overweight, and problems with heart disease and some cancers. For an athlete the most immediate problem is that a high fat intake displaces some of the energy we really need from carbohydrate foods. In a winning diet, lower-fat eating makes way for our new fuel foods. Cutting back a little on fats and oils is good for all athletes. However, if you are also concerned with losing some body fat or keeping it off, then you should pay special attention to low-fat eating strategies. Lower fat eating means reducing our intake of foods that are visibly fatty. However, many foods hide large amounts of fats and oils, often added in cooking or preparation. These should also be targeted. Alcohol has a strong link with sport through sponsorship. Although we have no need to drink alcohol in a winning diet, it can still be part of the healthy lifestyle of an athlete. Whether you drink at all is a personal decision. Unfortunately some sports people use alcohol badly, in terms of their health but also their performance.

Please note that this sample paper on Different culture diets is for your review only. Their station wagon turned twice after being hit by a water tank trailer leaving the entire family in an intensive care unit. Survival was a possibility if blood was available, unfortunately it wasn't. Think about your mum…your brother…What if they were caught in this accident and What if they were in need of blood …and What if blood wasn't available! I believe too few people donate blood…it's about time we teens start lending a hand for the benefit of others and for ourselves.

The most frequent question I ask myself is why should we try and preserve blood when we don't value it enough. What I'm meaning to say is that usually we teens carelessly loose out on a lot of our blood through things such as bleeding gums, bruises etc, but yet when it comes to loosing out on blood through donation most of us take a few steps backwards. The reason could possibly be due to fear of being infected or diseased from donating blood. This is truly a negative mindset for needles and other equipments used during donation are sterilized and discarded after being used once. The American Association of Blood Banks stated that although donors feel uneasy after donating blood yet there are absolutely no health risks associated with donating also on the other hand the human body averages 10 1 pints of blood therefore we can easily afford to spare some. Truly, the blood that flows through our veins is extremely precious there is no substitute for blood. No matter how far technology has taken us yet volunteer donors are still very much in need. Blood donation is looked as a form of charity one which is not equal ant to money. For money is the gift of luxury where as blood donation, which holds a far great rank, is the gift of life. Life South Community Blood Center quoted "One single pint is a silent, priceless gift to one another a gift hope, laughter and love, a gift of life". Your blood donation is given out of kindness the donor is not bond with obligation, the gift gives people of different societies the fighting chance at life.

Every time you walk into a blood bank to donate your blood you are not only bringing a smile on a single individual but instead several. For the blood you donate is separated into three components red blood cells, plasma and platelets. And also white blood cells as well as cryoprecipitate can be made from a pint of blood. Patients will only receive the blood component their body lacks. For instance cancer patients may only need platelets and burn patients may only need plasma. Just think by only devoting twenty minutes in donating blood you can help bring a number of smile on the patient in need as well as their family members who will always bear a life time of gratitude. Gifting blood is for sure a benefit towards the ill but have you ever though of the benefit you receive in turn. True you initially receive a sense of harmony; acknowledgement that this good deed preformed by yourself has helped wipe out all your bad deeds and has helped bring a smile of several individuals. Yet at the same time surprisingly it is also helps save your life in the short and long run. Well, your life is saved in the short run for every time you donate blood a lot of information about you is extracted. Confidential questions are asked your health history and your lifestyle. A lot of other testing are also run in order to be perfectly sure that the blood you donate will risk your health or the health of the receiving end. Through all these free tests run you might save your own life for it may uncover a condition in you that need treatment. In the long run blood donation is believed to reduces the risks of a heart disease, especially in men. Jerome Sullivan, M.D a researchers at the University of Florida believes so for each time you donate blood, iron is extracted from the body and this is good! For Sullivan believes that that high blood iron levels can increase the risk of heart disease. Iron speeds the oxidation of cholesterol a process that increases the damage to arteries that eventually leads to a cardiovascular disease. For example, a study of ,68 men in Finland reported in the September 18 issue of the American Journal of Epidemiology. Men who donated blood at least once a year had an 88 % lower risk of heart attacks than no donors. Another study published in the August 17 issue of Heart found that men who donated blood were less likely show signs of a heart disease than people who did donate. What Sullivan proposes yet has to undergo great amount of research in order to be finally proven yet there is always the though that what he has stated just may be true and therefore a great benefit for us in the long run.

Finally here is just one story of a baby who has special reasons to celebrate her life because of blood donors. Seriously teens all it takes is twenty minutes of your time to give our society and may be also one of your own family members the gift of life. It's one of the greatest deeds and experiences you must go through. I hope that someday you'll will either form a campaign or join one in order to donate apart of you so that you can make a difference in others as well as yourself.

Please note that this sample paper on blood donation is for your review only. He was the first black author to use black dialect in his

work.

Being the son of former slaves did not stop Dunbar from becoming the editor of

his high school paper, or achieving renown as a gifted poet. Charles Thatcher who was a

lawyer in Toledo became one of Dunbar's earliest supports. It's clear that Dunbar was

Destin for great things at an early age. The son of ex-slaves stepped in and out of dialect

for affect, never losing his distinctly black voice. He published and African-American

newsletter in Dayton, called tattler with the help of the Wright brothers. Dunbar

published in such mainstream journals as century, Lipincotts monthly the Atlantic

monthly and the Saturday Evening Post. His second volume "major and minors" propelled him to

national fame. He achieved game as a poet fairly quickly. Dunbar published 1 volumes

of poetry in all. Dunbar was one of the first important poets to write extensively about

the black experiences in both dialect and studied English.

Dunbar was a versatile writer, writing down the facts he lived through. Dunbar

was a lyricist of tremendous ability, has came down to modern readers primarily as a part

of negro dialect. More than two thirds of Dunbar's poetry are written in standard English,

these however are not the works that made him famous , nor they are the none's have

secured him a place in the history of American Literature. Dunbar had a tremendous

amount of ability and he could write poetry in any shape or size. The qualities that he

displays in his standard poetries such as the detailed attention nature. The skinful

manipulation of imager, the masterful experimenting rhyme and meter. Dunbar was in

favor of the rhythmic narrative and pleasing delineation of black peasant life that

characterizes much of his dialect poetry. Dunbar maintained many poetic qualities to

work with. With more than two thirds of Dunbar's poetry focused on life sincerely sweet

the public saw it fit to praise his "tingle and a broken tongue". The language of Dunbar's

poetry has been a sore point, and is by no means an accurate representation of folk speech

and is a rather a highly conceptualized literary speech that seeks to achieve its object by

means of exaggeration of deliberate standard English. Dunbar's poetry lives on in

different languages and speeches.

Although Paul Laurence Dunbar published in large number of poems, novels, and

short stories. He is however best remembered for his use of the "black" dialect. Dunbar

has been criticized by a number of people as idealizing the lives of blacks in the south as

in "the party" jigs, cotillions, reels, breakdowns and cordials, "or a Waltz of two". The

above reference as well as many others lead many other critics at the time to express the

idea that if dancing and singers in general are associated with the slave plantation, then

the old slaves would be distressed over the abolition. It seemed that some people believe

that Dunbar was glamorizing slavery. I however, do not believe that he did do so, yet

rather painted a picture of the way the slaves dealt with the circumstances they were put

in. While Dunbar was writing about the southern blacks making the best of their lives by

singing, dancing, and eating, and this in turn however was a false portrayal of overall day

to day slavery life, and brought about a large misconception of slavery. Contemporarily

the blacks were facing segregation, racism and terrorism because they were black. Many

critics beloved that Dunbar who was the son of ex slaves chose to ignore the essential

factors that helped shape the lives of the very people his dialect poetry supported to

reflect. Organizational-development specialists and consultants also have a history of helping employees understand what to do differently and helping them to learn how to do it. The target of these efforts typically has been executives and CEOs, but all managers are now expected to take on the responsibilities of the coach.

Managers have been the target of much fallout from the re- engineering/downsizing excesses of the 80s and 0s.

For surviving managers, the fallout meant Manage, but develop your employees, address performance problems, prepare people for possible succession, and field any number of interpersonal issues such as conflict, failure to adapt to the culture and so on.

Buy custom Not clear term paper

Managers are now expected to mentor, to advise, to coach and to otherwise get maximum accomplishment from each employee. It is a heavy agenda.

Of the many such expectations levied on managers, four stand out.

First, they are expected to help employees self-manage. That means taking an active role in the career and personal development of employees. It means being a leader in helping them develop and perform effectively.

For most managers taught to get the job done, helping others deal with these issues is a challenge. They are asked to be part psychologist, part father confessor, part disciplinarian and part teacher.

Second, we live in a world in which knowledge is the key to survival and effectiveness. One principle source of knowledge is the organization itself. For the manager, the questions are How can I harness the organizations capacity to teach the employee? How can the organization serve as teacher?

While this objective is often the job of the training department, managers are in a position to play a key role because they are closest to knowing what the employee needs to know to perform and to advance.

Facilitating this employee-organization interface demands high skill and commitment.

A third and growing expectation of many organizations (its often built into the formal performance-appraisal system) is the personal growth of their employees. How do managers stimulate it? How well do they frame it so the employee will act on a personal growth plan? How effectively is it integrated with training and the human- resources department? Does the employee think personal development is the same thing as the manager?

A fourth development that adds responsibility and power to the manager is feedback. Much that people learn about themselves and their performance results from feedback. Others provide it, and we extract it from informal performance judgements, rewards and casual conversation. Giving feedback to an employee is demanding of both time and skill. It is not for the faint of heart nor for those given to sound bites. Effectively giving feedback is a challenge to any manager.

Three main characteristics mark the manager-coach who can assume the responsibilities of this ever-expanding role.

First the coachs interpersonal skills must be honed to a high degree. Establishing a solid relationship with employees is perhaps the crucial element. Without a solid relationship, coaching is likely to be a formal exercise conducted at arms length. Managers with competent interpersonal skills are effective in confronting, deft in questioning and able to listen and understand.

The second characteristic is knowledge of the world in which the employee lives and works. That understanding comes from broad experience with a variety of employees in many settings.

The third characteristic is credibility. We gain credibility through academic qualifications, experience and evidence of age. But, at bottom, credibility must have a face; it must be manifested. Degrees and experience absent tangible and relevant evidence do not contribute to credibility. The employee has a right to ask What is it that you have which persuades me that I should heed your advice, counsel or direction?

Employees are putting such questions to managers at an increasing rate, and they should be prepared to address them head-on.

People often have difficulty integrating experience on one hand and job performance, career and personal development and conflict on the other. Part of the job of the competent manager is helping with that integration.

Effectively done, that is one small step in helping employees to achieve better performance and job satisfaction.

El Keil of Denver is a psychologist consultant to management who specializes in coaching for managers and executives. He is the author of several books and articles, and currently is working on a book on coaching.

Vox Pop is an opportunity for Denver Post readers to submit original, previously unpublished articles on any topic that affects jobs, the economy or businesses in Colorado. Order your Slaughterhouse Five paper at affordable prices!

Slaughterhouse-Five is a story of a man, Billy Pilgrim, who every once in a while will become "travel in time". The book itself is written as an anti-war book with many references to Dresden and the carpet bombings held there. This book has been on the topic of being banned since its release in 16. It has been banned on sexual, language and social concerns in the book, but has never been banned over a wide area or more than just a little town. This shows that Slaughterhouse-five should not be banned and not only read but part of the curriculum in the High Schools around the country.

Slaughterhouse-five does have a lot of vulgarity and sexual references in it but one has to remember that it is still just a book. "Shit. What do you know? What the hell they teach in college?" ch. This book was usually banned in middle school and high school age schools because of its language and vulgarity. But not only language is why people think it should be banned but also because it is referred to as an anti-war book and it was released in 16. At this time the Vietnam war was going on and this book was telling people that war is bad and you really don't have to go to it. This book portrays war as "unpatriotic" and "not needed". In a sense telling people how bad war was and how unnecessary it was.

Keeping in mind that this was an anti-war book and it did come out in 16 this still should be no grounds on why to ban a book. Books are part of our free speech and should not be banned because an author thinks one way or another. This book was written in reference to World War I but came out during the next war in American history 5 years later. This was no big coincidence because Vonnegut wanted to show how war was for him and to show the public how war can be. Banning a book this alone should not even come close to being reasonable. This book made people think about war and the true sides to it. It showed the other sides of war and expanded peoples thinking. And that's what a book should do, it should expand ones thinking and make them realize different things about the world. If this book should be banned it should be banned because it expands the mind.

Slaughterhouse-five is still reading material and almost anything to read is good for people. It is very well written and one of the all time great books of all time. Even though it does have some bad language and sexual references that really does not take away from the "wholeness" of the book. Some of Vonnegut's references may have also been made to "shock" people at the time or make them want to read further in to the book. If we ban a book for references to war and because of some bad language I think that would be violating our 1st amendment rights of free speech. Banning this book would be like banning "The tale of Peter Rabbit" because Peter goes into the garden and we don't want the people to hear about someone doing something bad. This book may not be appropriate for younger readers but should not be banned among the older readers.Order Custom Slaughterhouse Five paper

The biggest reason for this book being banned is because of its language and of its sexual content. Yes it does have some vulgar language and some sexual references. "Billy sniffed. His hot bed smelled like a mushroom cellar. He had had a wet dream about Montana Wildhack." Ch. 5 But this language is heard in everyday talk. Talking about a wet dream or saying words like "fuck" or "goddamn" is no grounds to ban a book. These words and phrases are things that High School aged children are prone to everyday. Now the Middle School age kids are different. They do not have as many years under their belt so they are not used to this language as much. Some of the also do not know when to use this language and what some it means. But the older High School ages can handle the use of this language. And by reading this book it opens their mind to another side of war. And expands their mind to not just one side of a subject like most books are, but the side of war that many people do not want to talk about.

After all is said and done Slaughterhouse-five is still considered one of the best works of our time. It shows us many periods of time all at once and reveals just what a war can do a person. There is some parts in this book that are not suitable for children but that does not mean they are not suitable for the older readers. The language in this book may in fact add to the wholeness of the book overall. Banning this book is overall a bad idea. Restricting it would be a better idea instead of banning it completely. High School aged kids are old enough to hear the language and understand what situations mean in the book. After all is said this book is not half as bad as some of the literature that has come out. And this is a real asset to a school to be able to teach it. If it is banned the kids will miss out on not only a great book but a mind opener.

Please note that this sample paper on Slaughterhouse Five is for your review only. He wants to achieve this in order to provide himself with the opportunity to have sexual intimancy with Alison. It was a longing shared by both parties - "For this was his desir and hire also"

As a "clerk" studying astronomy, Nicholas has the intelligence to think of complex situations and can handle many ideas. This gives him an advantage over John the "sely", simple Carpenter who hasn't had an adequate education, and who hasn't even read the famous "Catoun". His lack of mental stimulation makes him prone to trickery, his "wit was rude" and this makes him rather gullible to others.

Nicholas decides to begin the trick when John goes to work, he deliberately ensures he has food rations for two days and remains in his room, isolated. This provokes fear in John, as he says- "This world is now ful tikel, sikerly" as to suggest the fickleness of fate, he is genuinely worried that John has become ill, as this was the era of the plague. His concerns are all in vain, and this adds to Nicholas's ego as he is in control of the situation, despite being only a tenant in Johns home. In desperation, John looks through the keyhole and finds Nicholas "capyng upright" and looking bewildered as if in a trance. This perception however was false; Nicholas has acted this stance to induce curiosity and fear into John's mind. John is a god-fearing man due to his lack of knowledge, he prefers to be blissfully ignorant of "Goddes pryvetee" and takes the bible stories literally and seriously. The door is taken off it's hinges, and now Nicholas is exposed and ready to develop his trick. He refers to John as "myn hooste, life and deere" which gives him a false sense of security and companionship, he says this in order to settle John and prepare him for the revelation he is about to unfold to him. He also forces John to vow not to tell anyone, this is done to prevent him from revealing the "secret" to others, whom may have more common sense then John, and to enforce his importance and increase his vanity.

John is the "chosen one" to be confided in, he feels privileged that he will be saved. Nicholas is treating his as a friend, and a soon to be ally in his survival. This is the major part in Nicholas's trick, as he convinces John that a disaster created by God will happen soon, he says-"This world, in lasse than an hour Shal al be dreynt, so hidous is the shour." This instantly strikes fear into John's mind, he is puzzled and confused. However, Nicholas provides plenty of detail and impresses John with his knowledge, as he articulates exactly what is going to happen, and emphasizes attention to detail such as the water will dissapear "aboute pryme the next day" this heightens the tension and makes the incident seem even more realistic to John.

Nicholas has achieved starting Johns growing anxiety, and now he fears for his wife Alison, who ironically is part of the plot, which shows the pathos and comical element of the trick. Nicholas begins to give out orders, which adds authenticity and emphasizes his power and importance. John, with without any suspicious thoughts is speechless adheres to these, and doesn't even question Nicholas's claims, again proving John's gullibility and lack of self-thinking. Nicholas craftily blocks any opportunity for John to question his findings as he says -" Axe nat why". This divine secret has carefully and effectively been portrayed, and now John feels obliged to follow Nicholas and take his advise.

As Nicholas demonstrates what equipment is needed to save them, John realizes the scale of the immediacy. Nicholas exaggerates and tries to easy and delight Johns mind through saying "we be lordes al oure lyf" suggesting that they will be well-known all their lives, and they will achieve higher status. The "we" suggesting commaradary, but is ironically false. The commands that Nicholas gives is to remain silent, and for himself and Alison to hang far apart in the tubs. No "synne" must be commited while lying in the floats, which is ironic as Alison and Nicholas will commit adultery.

Another tactic Nicholas uses to enhance the trick is flattery, he describes John as a "wise" man, which is parallel to his true thoughts, this again reassures Nicholas that John, with his major role, will participate in anything he commands.

Overall this trick has been carefully planned, it is a perfect example of a "fabliau" and displays many of a fabliaux comical irony and deception. It shows how ruthless Nicholas is and how he'll lie, deceive and create illusions in order to successfully gain access to Alison in order to gratify his sexual needs. He enjoys exerting his "knowledge" and shows that by performing the trick, he is in control. He is driven on by his lust, and search for power, in which John is oblivious to.

Please note that this sample paper on Describe the trick played by Nicholas in the Miller tale is for your review only. To make this experience much more enjoyable, it is important that the person who is in charge of the teaching be a good teacher. But the question is What makes a good language teacher? Is it the method she or he applies?

Is it her/his personality, her/his physical appearance or her/his knowledge about the language?

The first item to take into account is the methodology teachers apply in the classroom. First of all, they should provide the students with a varied and exciting activities. That is to say, teachers should plan the activities having in mind the different abilities, interests and learning styles of the learners in order to get them involved during the lessons. Another thing to consider is the sitting arrangement. If the size of the classroom allows the teacher to move the students from one side to another, she or he could group the children in pairs or more people to work. Working individually all the time could bore the learners, causing misbehaviour problems. In addition to this, it is essential the teacher encourage the students to speak. In most cases the only opportunity they have to use the language is during the fifty minutes the lessons last, therefore the teacher should help them to make a good use of it. This does not mean that the teacher do not have to speak, but only when neccesary. For example, when presenting and explaining a new topic, when giving instructions, asking questions, etc.

Turning to the question of teachers personal traits, I believe that there are sone essential characteristics a teacher must have. Firstly, teachers must be well organized in order to make profit of the lessons. Secondly, a good teacher must be an example for their learners, so if she or he is strict about studentspunctuality and homework, she/he must be punctual and must give back homework in time. If teachers ask their learners to be responsible, they should be an example being responsible themselves. It is also a fact that children could be difficult sometimes, because of that it is indispensable for an educator to be patient, human, and able to understand that children are human beings that feel and have problems like everyone else.

Order custom research paper on What makes a good language teacher?

On the question of physical appearance, I am of the opinion that it is not a requirement for a good teacher to be handsome or pretty. What it is really important is to have a neat appearance, wearing proper clothes and the hair tidy and carefully arranged.

The last point to consider is the teacherscompetence. In the first place educators must know about the language and have a profound understanding of it. It is known that you cannot teach something you have not learn beforehand. To achieve this level of knowledge, they are not only supposed to attend to the Teacher Training College in order to get the University College Degree, but also they must attend courses and seminars once they have get it. This extra training provides educators with updated learning and tips they can apply in their teaching, making them able to use modern equipment and to deal with behaviour problems, learning difficulties and institutional obstacles.

All things considered, I believe that be a good language teacher depends on te teacher. Teachers have in their hands all the tools to make the language learning a painful experience, or the most exciting and successful one.

Please note that this sample paper on What makes a good language teacher? is for your review only. This death is not necessarily the physical end to a human life, but the crumbling end to the dreams of the main character, Willie Loman.

The play was written in 14 and based on the concept of the American Dream. What is the American Dream? There are many definitions of it and each every person has their own. Most people feel if you have a family, house, car, decent job with an average salary, and a good social life, then you have reached the American Dream. The concept of the American Dream became a popular idea during the nineteenth century when millions of people migrated to the United States in search of better lives.

There are many connections to the concept of the American Dream in "Death of a Salesman". One is when Willy expresses his jealousy towards the successes of his brother Ben. According to Willy, Ben knew what he wanted. He started with the clothes on his back, walked into the jungle and came out enormously rich at the age of twenty-one. Another example was when Willy's imaginary memory of Ben describes their father as a great inventor who traveled with his whole family westwards through America. He was successful in selling his inventions and he also became rich. Another illustration of the American Dream was when Willy remembers an occasion when his son Biff was playing at Ebbets Field. There was this glow around him and people cheered his name when he came out. He was a star then and this kind of personal success is also a typical example of the American Dream. An additional example is when Willy himself experienced a personal success in his work. It was in 18 when his commission average was at its highest level.

Do my essay on Willy loman and his american dream in death of a salesman CHEAP !

The whole story of the play is a parody on the American Dream. Willy Loman is a weary 6 year old man who wants nothing more than to reach the American Dream, but in reality he fails, most likely due to the fact he chose the wrong dream. He is a salesman for a large company in New York. In his own mind, he is still as he used to be, well known and well respected among the clientele in the New England area. Things have changed though and the people Willie once knew in the business are no longer there and he no longer has the connections he once had. His inability to cope with and adapt to this changing business has caused, among other things, a loss in pay. Willie has lost his competitive edge, and with it his feeling of self worth and identity.

Willy's dream also revolves around his family, more specifically his son Biff. Biff is the firstborn and favorite son of Willie. Willie has high expectations of, and transfers his dreams onto Biff. Biff can not live up to the expectations of his father and has dreams of his own which cause Willie to see him as a loafer and bum with no desire to succeed. Although Willie's dreams are not realized in Biff, his son's respect his still important. This respect is lost when Biff catches his father in an affair with a young lady. Even though this is not talked about, it still creates tension and causes Biff to lose the respect he once held for Willie.

Willie's main philosophy in life is "Be liked and you will never want." This is another problem causing Willie to fail in his American Dream. Image is everything to Willie. In his past he was a well liked, well known, respected man who turned his image into his success, but his image has changed. He is no longer well known and so he makes less sales and less money. His loss in pay has caused him to borrow money just to support his family. The constant borrowing of money is a source of great tension for Willie.

The compounding of Willie's problems, the loss of his self-respect, and the loss of respect from others cause Willie to go mad. He sinks into a depressive state and loses touch with reality. He has no dream and now will to live causing him to entertain thoughts of suicide. In the end it is the love for his son and the belief that his insurance money will make Biff "magnificent" that gives him the needed excuse to end his life.

A man's life is his world and this world is expressed through his dreams and desires. "Death of a Salesman" is the loss and destruction of one man's dreams. The effects of this loss and destruction are utter madness that eventually leads to suicide. This dramatic work has a moral that should not soon be forgotten When a man loses his dreams he loses everything and a life without dreams is a dull and empty void.

Please note that this sample paper on Willy loman and his american dream in death of a salesman is for your review only. A recent incident and the resolution technique used by Marathon are presented along with an analysis of the effectiveness of the technique used.

An Assessment of

A Dispute Resolution at the Workplace

Help with essay on A Dispute Resolution at the Workplace

On November 8, 1, Marathon Ashland Petroleum ("MAP"), Catlettsburg, Kentucky refinery, owned 68% by my employer, Marathon Oil Company ("Marathon"), had a tank rupture incident submitted for investigation. On this day, water in the bottom of tank 845 reached the boiling point and expanded into steam causing a foam-over of gas oil. The weld between the roof and top of the tank failed and allowed the foam mixture to erupt through openings in the top of the tank. The oil mist was sprayed into the air on and off the refinery's property. The erupted oil made its way into the parking lot behind the control lab of the refinery where it contacted several parked cars. The liquid traveled down the road and into nearby storm sewers.

This event was typical of a foam-over caused by water vaporizing in hot oil. The source of the water was not concluded due to limited availability of data. The tank was removed from service and several in-house corrective actions were initiated. Refinery personnel were alerted to the potential hazards of water in a hot atmospheric storage tank. Production planning was revised to ensure all process limitations were incorporated into the plan. Finally, internal process limits were modified to comply with new post-incident guidelines set forth by Marathon.

MAP's Catlettsburg refinery received a notice of violation from the Kentucky Natural Resources and Environmental Cabinet ("the Cabinet") regarding the rupture of tank 845. MAP has been involved in discussions with the Cabinet to resolve this issue. MAP and the Cabinet chose to pursue the mutual settlement program. The Mutual Settlement Program offered MAP and the Cabinet the opportunity to settle the alleged violation without expensive and time-consuming litigation. Once the violation was referred to the Mutual Settlement Program, MAP received a settlement offer asking for payment of a penalty of $150,000. Negotiations of the actual amount to pay regarding the penalty are still in progress and the final penalty accessed to MAP is expected to range from $0,000 to $10,000. MAP believes that the matter will be resolved in 00.

I feel that the decision to refer the settlement to a third party was effective. In this incident, the Mutual Settlement Program acts as a mediator between the Cabinet and MAP. The management and staff of MAP are not diverted from normal revenue-earning activities by choosing to forgo a trial and settle to have the matter negotiated through an independent party. Furthermore, the likelihood of the working relationship being damaged between the two parties is decreased by choosing this form of dispute resolution, and MAP is viewed as a complying organization attempting to rectify its errors, sending a positive image to the media concerning the environmental awareness and social responsibility of the company.

Choosing a mediator as an alternative dispute resolution can be advantageous and cost effective. A mediator remains neutral in the negotiation process, pressing both parties to examine the entire matter and proposed solutions. Only the process of the negotiation is controlled by the mediator and not the outcome. There is not a great deal of information regarding mediation available to the general public. Nothing said in mediation and none of the documents prepared specifically for mediation, with the exception of those that would have been disclosed in court in any case, can be disclosed outside the mediation process. Because the decision to participate is voluntary and the solution is negotiated rather than imposed, there is a greater chance for a win-win solution and both parties remain in control. The agreement reached by the parties is not binding until it is put in writing signed by both parties. Mediation is one of the least expensive alternatives to litigation in which the parties arrive at a decision at a much faster rate than court trials and remain in control of the resolution process. This alternative dispute resolution technique is a reasonable way for companies to minimize exposure to the public, save time and money, and salvage relationships with customers while being responsible for their actions.

References

Kentucky Emergency Management. Both are shunned from society neither having any real friends. Though these characters have some similarities, the way in which Robinson portrays them is very different. Richard Cory is admired by his peers, where as, Miniver Cheevy is opposite; people look down on him. One man appearing to have everything takes his own life, while the other appearing to have nothing accepts his misery. For Richard Cory, the saying money can't buy happiness, could not be more appropriate. He is, according to the people of the town, the man with everything. Everyone wished they could be more like him, "he had everything to make us wish that we were in his place". In contrast Miniver Cheevy, had nothing to be admired for, he had done nothing with his life and yet he longed to have the adoration that Richard Cory had, the respect and almost kingly qualities, "he was a gentleman from sole to crown". Miniver Cheevy wanted to be the hero that Cory was to the people on the street. "Miniver mourned the ripe renown that made so many a name so fragrant." "Richard Cory" is told from an outsider's point of view, so that the reader does not gain any more insight into Cory's mind then the people on the pavement. This also adds to the surprise when Cory, seemingly happy, puts a bullet in his head. Richard Cory had no friends the people of the town never really saw him as a person, in fact they never saw him at all, the "people on the pavement looked at him", never spoke to him, he was only something to admire. He was a god in their eyes, almost holier than thou, "and he was rich-yes, richer than a king" yet He rarely spoke but when he did "he was always human when he talked" suggesting he was not human the rest of the time. "He glittered when he walked" as if he shined, he was different and the people on the pavement "looked at him" to an outsider he would appear to be an untouchable, living in a society that could not or did not know how to accept him. He tried to speak to the people on the pavement however "he fluttered pulses when he said 'Good Morning". The people on the pavement put Richard Cory on a pedestal and therefore could not speak to him. They envied him and hated him they wanted his life so easy, so simple, and so happy. They continued to work and hope that one day they too could be as rich and as happy as Richard Cory, hating him even more everyday they "went without meat". Then "Richard Cory, one calm summer night, went home and put a bullet through his head". One calm summer night implies there was nothing special or unusual about that particular night, it was the same as any other and yet the town's god/outcast, commits suicide, for apparently no reason. Robinson gives no insight into Cory's mind, we can only assume he was so miserable that he could not bear to go another day, with the people on the pavement looking at him and hating him more and more. The tone of "Richard Cory" is upbeat until the unexpected end; in contrast "Miniver Cheevy" has a negative tone from the first line, "Miniver Cheevy, child of scorn". Scorn implies hatred, disdain contempt and misery. "He assailed the seasons" Since season is plural it is not just one season or point in time, this is a constant misery an ongoing Battle within himself. "He wept that he was ever born," He was born too late he "loved the days of old" and wishes he could have lived in that time, he would have done anything to be a bold warrior and gain the respect and love of his people. "He would have sinned incessantly could he have been one." He envied those times it was so easy to gain respect, romance and to be the talk of the town, Miniver desperately wanted all of this and yet he had none. "Miniver cursed the commonplace" he hated his surroundings they were so boring to him, there were no exciting battles to watch or be a part of. To Miniver even the dress was boring, though the common suit does hold stature, "Miniver eyed it with loathing" hating it solely because it did not have the same "medieval grace of iron clothing". He hated the money he desired knowing it was only important in his present life it would not have been important if he was living in the days of old yet he was even more miserable without it. He could not accept his life and so his only escape was to drink and so he did. In both of these poems Robinson portrays the outcast within society. One seemingly well off and content with his life, the other outwardly miserable. Because the people on the pavement hold Richard Cory in such high esteem he becomes an outcast within their society. Miniver Cheevy has done nothing society has told him to therefore he is society's outcast. Neither of theses characters are accepted in their own life and neither can face another day. They both have a need to escape the present, they choose to do this in different ways, Richard Cory takes his life, and Miniver Cheevy drinks and pretends he is a knight in medieval times. Robinson effectively takes to characters and puts them into completely different settings and ends the poems with the same concept of misery.

Please note that this sample paper on Robinson's portrayal is for your review only. Growing up by the ocean influenced him to write. At age thirteen he had his first poem published in a Portland newspaper. At age fifteen he started college at Bowdoin College, where he met a friend named Nathaniel Hawthorne. It was at this time that they both decided to become writers. Longfellow was very good at learning other languages, after college, and then he accepted a position as the college's first professor of modern languages. First, he planned to study French, Spanish, and Italian. He mastered those languages and began to study German. After three years in Europe, he returned to Bowdoin to begin the position as professor of modern languages. Him being the first, he had to create his own textbooks. For the next ten years he concentrated on scholar writing, teaching, translating, and prose. During this same time he composed almost no poetry.

In 181, Longfellow married Mary Storer Potter. In 184, the couple traveled to Europe in order for Henry to prepare for his new position, modern languages, he was offered at Harvard University. There he studied German literature in Europe. The couple liked to travel a lot, while they were in the Netherlands; his wife suffered a miscarriage and died shortly afterward in Rotterdam on November ,185. Later that year, he published a collection of European travel sketches, his first book, called Outr-Mer A Pilgrimage Beyond the Sea. The collection of poems called ballads and Other Poems (1841) contained several works that made Longfellow well known. These included "The wreck of the Hesperus", "The Village Blacksmith", and "Excelsior". In 184, Longfellow proposed to Frances (Fanny) Appleton, following a seven-year courtship. They got married in July 184. The couple had six children and enjoyed eighteen years of happiness. Longfellow had been a boarder at the Craigie House in Cambridge, Mass., after his marriage to Frances; her wealthy father bought the house for them as a wedding gift. The house and grounds now make up the Longfellow National Historic Site.

The first of his four major narrative poems, Evangeline, was published in 1847. This poem is based on the removal of French settlers from Nova Scotia by the British during the French and Indian War (1754-176). Gabriel Lajeunesse and Evangeline Bellefontaine, two lovers, are separated as a result of the removal. It tells about Evangeline searching her whole life for Gabriel and finding him at old age dying from the plague. This poem played on the then popular appeal of sentimental love stories. The Song of Hiawatha (1855) was the second of Longfellow's major narrative poems. The poem focused on Hiawatha, an Indian hero, whose life was full of triumphs and tragedies. He presents in the poem the Indians' mythology, which he had read about in the writings of the experts of his day. The Courtship of Miles Standish (1858) was the third of his major narrative poems. This poem deals with the early history of New England. The poem tells of a love triangle involving Miles Standish, Priscilla Mullins, and John Alden. Miles is too proud to ask Priscilla to marry him, and asks John to do it for him. Priscilla asked John while he is acting for Miles, rather than speaking for himself, John and Priscilla marry and are eventually reunited in friendship with Miles. In the Tales of a Wayside Inn, the fourth, and last, of Longfellow's major narrative poems. This poem is a series of twenty-two stories in verse told by seven men gathered at an inn in "Sudbury Town" in Massachusetts.

Help with essay on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Longfellow translated poetry from eighteen languages. His most significant translation was Dante Alighieri's medieval poem the Divine Comedy, published in 1867. Some scholars feel Longfellow made the finest translation of the Divine Comedy in the English language. During his later years, Longfellow wrote sensitive lyric poems and, also, attempted longer dramatic poems.

To today's readers, Longfellow's sentimental and optimistic poetry makes him seem old-fashioned. In his poetry he used literature from other countries for the content and as a source, thus made his work more interesting. His work has often been criticized, but his lyric and narrative poetry made lasting contributions to the American literary tradition. Longfellow wrote for the common middle class reader in a clear sometimes-elegant style that represents popular American values.

Please note that this sample paper on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is for your review only. These are the questions that are in most people's minds when the topic of technology comes up around the dinner table. Not only has technology developed into developing on a daily basis but it has also become a major tool in our every day routine, but most of us can't seem to find the cons, because we are hypnotized by the pros'.

The internet has greatly evolved itself into an item which is being used on a daily basis, but is the internet so useful that we should use it while eating dinner or integrate it into our cars and higher the risk of accidents. Only a fool would say the internet is useless. We can read the news for free, check out concerts, and read movie reviews all at the click of a mouse.

One can argue that the internet is useful, but one can also argue about the flaws the World Wide Web. We must also realize that the internet cannot solve all of life's problems. Of course the internet cannot cure cancer, or stop old age or neither can it stop global warming, so I will skip all these issues and talk about some more common E-mail. E-mail is by far, perhaps, is one of the technological discoveries which have many benefits. It is fast, and cheaper also it is also a great way to communicate with people in far away places and help people who are shy to open up and express their opinions. Even though e-mail has all this goodness in it, I also believe that e-mail also houses many useless items and contributes to the haste in our world. For example, many innocent victims have been the target of sever computer viruses which are sent through the internet. Your computer can't just be attacked by a virus; it has to be sent to you, obviously not through regular mail but of course by electronic mail. Once you click on the email and download the file, in a matter of seconds your computer will be ravished by a plague. Also as more and more mail and messages are being sent and received, our minds immediately respond to these letters in a different way. We may mix up the messages, or not properly give the response they deserve. Also many wrong decisions are being made via e-mail, since these responses have to be sent and received ASAP; many people are typing up whatever comes to mind and sending them without giving any thought of what to actually type and give a good response. By rushing into things, and not looking over our responses we are hurting ourselves and society.

Of course, e-mail is not the only thing on the internet which is a bad example of technology. Chat rooms are another example. A chat room is where people log on to a room which has a topic and you discuss about the topic with people around the world or a certain town or city. Sometimes people seem to open a lot with their fellow chatter and some personal information mite slip through, and the other chatter might take advantage and start to stalk, phone or use that information for their own use. Many internet users have been in situations like these and have lost greatly, both financially and emotionally. Many young teenage girls are being stalked, threatened and harassed daily on chat rooms. Most of the time these conversations lead out of these chat rooms and into public places. These web site owners cannot do anything about, but give advice on how to safely chat and not to give out any personal information. Other than securing your credit card number on a online order form, the internet does not really offer you a lot of security. This is an issue which must be worked on in the future. We must never progress into technology especially develop without separating the good from the bad and making sure it is safe for people. While the chat room does not offer much security, the internet also allows much explicit content to be viewed by underage people. Most of these content are free and do not ask for age verification. Even with all this mind, we seem to trust the internet because we can do online shopping and read books for free. We seem to trust the internet even more nowadays because we have the hope that the internet is our future, we have accepted the fact that without the internet life would be quite hard and nevertheless quite boring.

Order custom research paper on Technology

I like the internet, I'm not against, I too greatly benefit from the internet and greatly admire its benefits, but I feel that this particular technology was created without certain restrictions and certain barriers. You can get help on your school report and also get a report which was written by someone else. You can get directions on how to assemble a toy car and also instructions on how to build a bomb. Whenever we create something, we must find ways to secure the item from harming others and to make sure that it is safe for people in the society to use, if we must put certain things on it, we must make sure that it is available to only those who are eligible or have permission to use it. The government cannot do anything about these issues, we the public must take action into our own hands. We must decide what is useful for our society and we must abolish the useless from harming us and our future. I'm not saying that we should eliminate the internet altogether, but eliminating the things that give the internet a bad name is a good start.

Please note that this sample paper on Technology is for your review only. However, this is far from normal books. This is not necessarily a book we read from cover to cover, but one that is told in sections, or sagas if you will, passed on from one ear to the next. Whether it is told to our siblings, children, friends, or just acquaintances, it is much too extravagant of a story to tell in one sitting. As boring as some of us may think our lives are, the story is more exciting than any fictional novel you can find. This is because it is reality. The pages are written day by day, month by month, and year by year. The course of the story can change at any moment, and no one knows when that moment could be. We can only live our lives to the fullest, and let the story write itself.

The novel begins with birth. As we age older, we learn at an amazing pace. This is a different kind of learning, however, as opposed to school. These are life skills, such as opening our eyes, eating, walking, talking, and beginning to learn to fend for ourselves. As we progress a few chapters, we are introduced into the next section of the novel school. We begin our education, the knowledge we will need to be successful in life. Not only that, but here we meet our first friends. You will never forget these friends, no matter how old you are. I bet that if all of you took a minute to think about it, you could all remember at least half, probably more, of the students in your first kindergarten class. Just like a book, the names are engraved inside your head. These engravings will carry on with you for the rest of your life, with more being added to them every day.

As we skip ahead a chapter, we now come to the present high school. As much as the teachers hate to hear it, but as you move through school, the things you learn become less useful. The more you learn, the less likely it is you will ever use that information again in life. However, I am not at all saying that high school is pointless, although none of us will admit that now. High school is a very important part of our lives. Although you will learn some important things in your classes, the lessons in life that you will learn are what will carry on with you later in life. It is somewhat of an introduction to the real world. We learn to drive, get our first jobs, pay for some of our own meals, and possibly do some laundry or dishes. All of these skills are necessary for later in life. Also, many important lessons are learned. Lessons in trust, friendship, honesty, morality, faith, and many others are experienced very frequently. I remember just a couple years ago I had a very close friend, or so I thought. I did anything and everything for this friend. I gave him rides, let him borrow money, gave him a place to stay if he needed it, or whatever else he needed. I was being a good friend. A few months after all this had been going on, one of my other friends asked me, "Why are you friends with him?" Puzzled, I answered, "Because he's my friend." He replied, "No, he's not. All he does when you're not around is talk bad about you. He brags to everyone that he can get you to do anything he wants. He tells everyone he's not your friend. He says he's just using you. That kind of person is not a friend." As I dwelled on what he was telling me, I felt a mix of anger, sadness, and emptiness. I was so shocked I didn't really know what to think. Although it hurt me at the time, I realized later that I had learned an important lesson in life. Be careful who you trust. People aren't always who they seem to be. Make sure you know who you're talking to before you begin to speak. Lessons such as this are learned constantly in high school, whether we realize it or not. It is important that we take time out to reflect on things like this so we can learn the lessons we were meant to learn. Without these lessons we would be living in a false reality. That is why high school is such an important chapter in the book of life.

Now that this chapter has come to a close, we stand here looking straight ahead at the future. Just like a book, we think we may know what will happen in the coming chapters, but the story can twist and turn any way at any time. The future, to us students, is a man standing in the shadows. All you can see is a vague silhouette, but you have no clue what the light may reveal. All we can do is prepare ourselves for anything. Always assume the worst and the best. Keep your priorities in order. Work hard at everything you do, but don't forget to stop and have fun every once in a while. If you don't have fun in life, then what are you living for? Look to the future, but don't ever forget the past. Just remember to stop and read a chapter or two of the novel of your life every once in a while to someone. You never know who you may inspire.

Write my Essay on Turning Pages for me

Please note that this sample paper on Turning Pages is for your review only. Do you promise me that behind the red curtain over there the figure of Sir Chartres Biron is not conclead? We are all women you assure me? Then I may tell you that the next words I read were these- Chloe liked Olivia... Do not start. Do not blush. Let us admit in the privacy of our own society that these things sometimes happen. Somtimes women do like women. -Virgina Woolf, A Room of Ones Own

This quote so interests me because it gets at the views on homosexuality not just of Virgina Woolfs time, but of the views of many centuries before her. Only recently has the issue of homosexuality been publicly discussed and debated, and even now there are still many who are uncomfortable or against the subject. Therefore, with a subject that is still so adamantly argued today, one can only expect that the ideas were even more narrow-minded concerning homosexuality dating back for centuries.

Historically, the subject of homosexuality has been kept very hidden and private from the public. Obviously the idea and practice of homosexuality has existed for centuries, if not since the caveman, but the degree with which one was free to discuss it has changed dramatically. As reference, for example, we know that Sappho was a lesbian based on her letters and poems to women, but she could never come out and express such an idea openly to the public. The paragraph directly following this quote from A Room of Ones Own begins, it struck me how immense a change was there. Chloe liked Olivia perhaps for the first time in literature. Cleopatra did not like Olivia. This demonstrates that in Woolfs time even the idea of discussing homosexuality in a public forum was revolutionary. As she describes, never before had there been a novel where a girl was in love with a girl or even a man was in love with a man. Additionally, in her preface to the actual discussion of homosexuality in literature, she makes the point of glancing around the metaphorical room of readers in order to ensure that there are no men around. This seems indicative of the ideas of the time, as though some of these ideas were finally able to be discussed in literature, the idea of discussing it with men was still considered taboo.

The idea of homosexuality is not only noticeable in its existence, as Mary Carmichaels book discusses new territory, but also in the idea of its nonexistence in literature up to that point. While Sapphos poems are one instance to which this might not completely apply, for the most part, especially in novels and literature before Woolfs time, there was virtually no mention of homosexuality. As Woolfs last quote ends, Cleopatra did not like Olivia. She then goes on to say how completely Antony and Cleopatra would have been altered if she had done so! This thought, that all of literature could be altered if the relationships were about two females instead of a male and a female, is a mind-boggling one. As much of literature concerning the female gender, as Woolf points out, is concerned with their relationship with men, how would this effect the entire dynamic of the great classics?

Thus the issue of homosexuality is a bigger one than at first meets the eye, for not only is it a matter of the times and the historical implications of speaking out concerning homosexuality, but a matter of the creation of relationships developed within the novels. If literature had focused on homosexual instead of heterosexual relationships, would the issue of the relationship between men and women play as elemental a role, either in literature or in life in general?

Please note that this sample paper on A Room of One's Own is for your review only.
